No. of bitstreams: 1 Daniel Polimeni Maireno.pdf: 758711 bytes, checksum: 0f1b25c32fb82af3d78453573360373f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-10-06 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The present thesis aims to discuss the possible metapsychological reasons that contribute to the success of the film industry of serial killers, based on the hypothesis that the human psychological behavior in general, represented by movie s spectators, retain more familiarity with aggressive and homicide minds than it is known. Throughout the content, this essay relies primarily on a discussion about the concept of instinct of death and its relation with aggressiveness, as they were articulated on theoretical contributions of important members of the psychoanalytic field. Primarily, a brief historical resume of the cinematographic branch of terror/suspense was made, since its origins at the first decades of the XX Century to the current super productions, which enables to certify the various forms shown in movies with a homicide perspective. Also, the interpretation of two important researchers of this cinematographic phenomenon is considered, its emphasis in historical and esthetic specific contexts, which is used to summarize the present metapshycological study. As the thesis develops, it is possible to accord that, besides subscribing to the thinking of profound psychic drive of the shaping of this curious and ludicrous culture, as well as the pleasure associated to it; this research consists in an effort to render problematic and elucidate certain facets of the psychic functioning.

Factors Associated with Peer Aggression and Peer Victimization Among Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Children with Other Disabilities, and Children Without a Disability

Mallory, Sarah B. January 2014 (has links)
Peer aggression can take the form of physical hostility, adverse peer pressure, teasing, shunning, and social rejection (Little, 2002). Repeated acts of peer aggression are considered peer victimization and affect children with disabilities more often than children with no reported disabilities or psychiatric disorders (Baumeister, Storch, & Geffken, 2008; Pittet, Berchtold, Akre, Michaud & Suris, 2011). Personal characteristics and contextual factors have been linked to higher rates of peer aggression and the presence of peer victimization (Baumeister, et al., 2008; Bejerot & Morthberg, 2009; Boivin, Vitaro, & Bukowski, 1999; Hodges, Boivin, Vitaro, & Bukowski, 1999; Mishna, 2003). Youth who have experienced peer victimization have been found to suffer consequent loneliness, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety and suicidal ideation (Bond, Carlin, Thomas, Rubin, & Patton, 2001; Hawker & Boulton, 2000; Hunter, Boyle & Warden, 2007; Siegal, La Greca, & Harrison, 2009). The present study used a caregiver survey to investigate experiences of peer aggression and peer victimization, as well as factors linked to such victimization among children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), with other disabilities (OD), and without disabilities (WD). The main analyses addressed five sets of research questions. The first three research questions pertained to all three groups of participants and (1) compared rates of peer aggression and the proportion of children who experienced peer victimization between the ASD, OD and WD groups, (2) asked which personal factors were associated with peer aggression and peer victimization, and (3) asked which personal factors best predicted peer aggression and peer victimization. The last two research questions pertained to the ASD and OD groups only (disability group) and asked (1) which personal factors and contextual factors were associated with peer aggression and peer victimization, and (2) which personal factors and contextual factors best predicted peer aggression and peer victimization. The main analyses indicated that children with ASD and OD experienced significantly greater rates of peer aggression than peers in the WD group. Additionally, the ASD and OD groups of children were more likely to experience peer victimization than the WD group.Peer aggression was correlated with autistic traits, anxious/depressed, withdrawn/depressed, thought problems, and attention problems. A multiple regression analysis indicated that the variable of anxious/depressed was the only variable that significantly contributed to the model and it accounted for approximately one-third of the variance. Caregivers whose children experienced peer victimization reported significantly higher scores in autistic characteristics, anxious/depressed, withdrawn/depressed, thought problems, and attention problems. A forward logistic regression analysis indicated that anxious/depressed was the only variable that predicted peer victimization. The multiple regression and forward logistic regression models produced for the combined ASD and OD group were similar to the models produced during the prior analyses for all three groups. Anxious/depressed was the only variable that significantly contributed to the multiple linear regression and forward logistic regression models. Contextual variables were not correlated with peer aggression or associated with peer victimization and they did not significantly contribute to the regression models.

Bullying in schools: the role of empathy, temperament, and emotion regulation

Unknown Date (has links)
Peer aggression and bullying are significant problems for children in American schools. While a large body of research has been conducted in this area, none to date has examined the combined roles of temperament (behavioral activation system, or BAS, and behavioral inhibition system, or BIS), and empathy in predicting participation in bullying interactions. Previous research has found that low empathy facilitates aggressive behavior, while high empathy inhibits it, and has linked poor emotion regulation to conduct disorders. Thus, if these factors can predict behaviors towards peers, they may also predict (independently and in combination) involvement in bullying, specifically the roles assumed in those interactions - that is: bully, victim, bully-victim (a child who is both bully and victim), or defender/protector. The present study tested 226 middle school students on a measure of empathy (Interpersonal Reactivity Index), and a measure of temperament (BIS/BAS Scales). The students also completed a Peer Nomination Inventory to identify children who were aggressive toward others, victimized by peers, and/or protected peers from bullies. Although not all predictions were supported, results showed that certain sub-components of empathy, such as empathic concern (affective empathy) and personal distress (a measure of emotion regulation) predicted the behavior of "pure bullies" (bullies who are not themselves victimized), but not of other aggressive children such as bully-victims. High BAS drive and low BIS were significant predictors of aggressive behavior, and BAS reward responsiveness predicted protective behavior. Victimized children had higher fantasy (ability to identify with fictional characters) and lower perspective-taking (cognitive empathy) skills, and tended not to have overlapping characteristics and behaviors with protective children. / These characteristics did not interact significantly with each other or with age, gender, ethnicity, or SES of students. It was concluded that pure bullies lack affective empathy, and victims lack cognitive empathy. That is, empathy is multidimensional and empathy deficits vary in type, but all lead to some form of socioemotional impairment. Furthermore, aggressive victims are a unique sub-group of children with unique characteristics. / by Chantal M. Agressividade na ludoterapia: impacto na contratransferência / Agressiveness in play therapy: consequences on countertransference

Silveira, Bruno Medici 22 September 2008 (has links)
Aggressiveness in childhood has been pointed in longitudinal researches as precursor of delinquency during adolescence and drug addiction in adult age. Based on the fact that childhood is the fase of human development most likely to the occurence of changes, children who were considered aggressive by their teachers were submitted to interventions in the school environment. In the present study, the research was focused in the play therapy process to which an aggressive male child was submitted and its countertransference phenomena. Weekly sessions were held in a room equipped with specific playing material to this kind of intervention. The psychotherapy process lasted aproximatedly two years. Important internal changes were observed in the child, who was able to deal better with losses and accept limits on the relation with others. These changes improved his potential of establishing human relations in social environment, specially in school. Nevertheless, in many occasions, the therapist felt some kind of anxiety and confusion during his contact with the boy, more specifically in the moments when the child showed aggressive behavior. At the end of the psychotherapy process, an effort of understanding these anxious and confusing experience, which occurred during the sessions, was made. What sort of events those could be? What are their meanings, what sense could they make? In order to approach these questions, it was used theoretical references of some authors, such as Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott and Pierre Fédida, focusing the aggressiveness and the transference/countertransference process. These studies were able to show clearly the fact that the intensity and the violence of the transferential process can interrupt the receptive capacity of countertranference, which can be exposed as the possibility of resonance, the opening to the new and unexpected and the possibility of the therapists language during the sessions. Also, the power of this transference can find echoes on the therapists own unconscious conflicts. The questions left for future studies are based on the hypothesis that the attack to the receptive capacity of countertransference happens frequently in an aggressive childs clinical treatment, and this attack can arise from the difficulty of working over mourning and depressive anxiety.

Agressividade entre pais e educadores na educação infantil: manejos possíveis a partir do campo simbólico / Aggressiveness between parents and educators in Early Childhood Education: Possible interventions from the symbolic field

Mariana Rodrigues Anconi 27 March 2017 (has links)
The main objective of this work is to provide a tool for professionals who work with young children (early childhood 0 to 3 years old) in the field of education as well as health care for the management of impasses and conflicts represented many times for aggressiveness with children families. The research is presented in five chapters and a final-consideration section. At first, different perspectives will be presented on knowledge in culture and society through the field of science, scientism, and psychoanalysis. It starts from the idea the second modality (scientific) appears as a deployment of the first (science), from the technocratization (technique + bureaucratization) of knowledge. In addition, it is the reflection of the current society and its relation with knowledge. On the other hand, the psychoanalysis knowledge will be worked from the subversion of the Cartesian subject with the concept of subject of the unconscious. Through a bibliographical study, the construction of the concept of aggressiveness in the Sigmund Freuds work and its deployment and advances in Jacques Lacan will be discussed. Moreover, the concept of uneasiness on education will also be discussed in the face of relations established with knowledge and place of knowledge in the society as a product (merchandise). From the contextualization of the day-care institution and how it appropriates the knowledge over time (hygienist, pedagogizing, psychologizing knowledge, among others), the question is asked: on the parents side, what is this knowledge about? This question appears as the background of the work since parental knowledge has been deprived by technique and scientism, even related to the position of educators and other professionals as specialists. Therefore, as a result of the knowledge that is at stake in children education, the subjective positions of parents and educators will be presented, and the effects on the relationship between them, characterizing in a harmonious relationship based on the mutual identification associated to scientific knowledge or a relationship permeated by conflicts and even aggressiveness, when there is no recognition of unconscious knowledge. Finally, a more direct contribution to the field of education with the proposal of possible management from the symbolic field by the clippings of educators and parents speeches concerning the knowledge that circulates, providing a counterpoint to the scientific researches that broach such conflicts from an ideal aiming at excluding the space for difference and discontinuities between parents and educators, then producing something of impotence in education

Hollsten, Mia, Svensson, Daniel January 2019 (has links)
Aim: CSR is an often-used term and a well-discussed topic. Corporate tax is also an often debated subject where many of the methods used by companies to greatly reduce tax can be questioned. Since tax can be seen as a way to contribute to society at large, studies of CSR, which is a way for companies to take social responsibility, have become interesting to study in relation to tax. Contradicting studies, however, lead to the need to investigate factors that may affect the relationship. Ownership structure can have an impact on corporate social responsibility and how tax-aggressive a company is. This study therefore investigates whether insider ownership is a factor that has a moderating effect on the relationship between CSR and tax aggressiveness. Method: The study is based on a positivistic research philosophy with a hypothetical-deductive approach. The study has a quantitative strategy and a longitudinal design using ten-year data of 273 public European companies, for the years 2008-2017. In the study, secondary data has been used retrieved from the Thomson Reuters Eikon database. Collected data has been analyzed in the statistical program SPSS. Result & Conclusions: The results show that insider ownership has a moderating effect on the relationship between CSR and tax. This study shows that it is the level of insider ownership that determines the direction of the relationship between CSR and tax aggressiveness. The conclusion that can be reached is that ownership structure is a factor that should be taken into account in studies examining the relationship between tax and CSR. Contribution of the thesis: This study provides a unique contribution to the field of accounting research as it is the only one to study the impact of ownership structure on CSR and tax aggressiveness by examining insider ownership. The study also provides a practical contribution to government institutions and organizations about the ownership structures that can affect companies’ attitude towards sustainability reporting and tax behavior. In addition to this, empirical research on European companies and the relationship between CSR and tax are broadened. Suggestions for future research: Further research is needed in the form of studies on the type of shares held by insiders, i.e. if the holding contains voting shares or not. Further research is also needed to study different groups of insiders as there may be differences within a broad definition of insiders as to whether the person is largely associated with the company or not. In addition, there are also suggestions for more research that does not measure CSR as one variable. By studying the dimensions that make up CSR as separate variables there may be differences that are not detected when it is measured as one variable.

A functional analysis of psychiatric inpatient aggression

Daffern, Michael January 2004 (has links)
Aggression occurs frequently on many psychiatric wards; its assessment and management are crucial components of inpatient care. Consequences to inpatient aggression are profound, impacting on staff and patients, ward milieu and regime, and mental health services in general. Despite considerable research, which has primarily focussed on the assessment of demographic and clinical characteristics of aggressive patients, the nature of the relationship between mental illness, inpatient treatment and aggression remains unclear. Inconsistent risk assessment practices, management strategies and treatment plans, often derived from idiosyncratic beliefs about the causes of aggression, follow. Approaches to the assessment of inpatient aggression have been categorised as structural, which emphasise form, or functional, which emphasise purpose. Studies of inpatient aggression have primarily utilized a structural approach. These studies have resulted in the identification of demographic, clinical and situational characteristics of high-risk patients and environments. Resource allocation and actuarial assessments of risk have been assisted by this research. Conversely, functional assessment approaches seek to clarify the factors responsible for the development, expression and maintenance of inpatient aggression by examining predisposing characteristics, in addition to the proximal antecedents and consequences of aggressive behaviours. While functional analysis has demonstrated efficacy in assessing and prescribing interventions for other problem behaviours, and has been regarded a legitimate assessment approach for anger management problems, psychiatric inpatient aggression has been relatively neglected by functional analysis. Against this background, four studies focussing on the assessment of predisposing characteristics, precipitants and consequences, and purposes of aggressive behaviour, were undertaken to assist in the development of a functional analysis of psychiatric inpatient aggression. All four studies were conducted within the Thomas Embling Hospital (TEH), a secure forensic psychiatric hospital in Melbourne, Australia. The first of three initial studies involved a retrospective review of Incident Forms relating to aggressive behaviours that occurred within the first year of the hospital?s operation. The second involved a comparison of prospective assessment of aggressive behaviours with retrospective review of Incident Forms. The third involved a review of Incident Forms across two forensic psychiatric hospitals, the Rosanna Forensic Psychiatric Centre, and the TEH, to allow for the study of environmental contributors to aggression. The fourth, and main study, focussed on the assessment of patients and aggressive incidents, using a framework emphasising purpose, which was assessed using a classification system designed and validated as part of this study. Demographic and clinical information in addition to social behaviour, history of aggression and substance use were collected on the 204 patients admitted to the hospital during 2002. One hundred and ten of these patients completed an additional assessment of psychotic symptoms in addition to a battery of psychological tests measuring anger expression and control, assertiveness, and impulsivity. During 2002, the year under review, there were 502 incidents of verbal aggression, physical aggression, and property damage recorded. Staff members who observed these incidents were interviewed, and files were reviewed to record the severity, type, direction and purpose of aggression. Following 71 aggressive behaviours patients also participated in the assessment of purpose. Results from this, and the three initial studies, reinforced the contribution to aggression of a number of individual characteristics, including a recent history of substance use, an entrenched history of aggression, a recent history of antisocial behaviour, and symptoms of psychosis, including thought disturbance, auditory hallucinations and conceptual disorganisation. Somewhat surprisingly, a number of other characteristics shown through previous research to have a relationship with aggression, including anger arousal and control, impulsivity, and assertiveness did not show a relationship with aggression. Further, and perhaps a consequence of the peculiar characteristics of some patients admitted to the TEH, older patients and females were more likely to be repeatedly aggressive, yet neither age nor gender differentiated aggressive from non-aggressive inpatients. In this study acts of inpatient aggression were usually precipitated by discernible events, or motivated by rational purposes. Rarely was aggression the consequence of a spontaneous manifestation of underlying psychopathology occurring in isolation from environmental precipitants. A number of proximal environmental factors, most particularly staff-patient interactions associated with treatment or maintenance of ward regime, that were considered provocative or that threatened status, were evident in incidents of aggression perpetrated against staff. The perception of provocation and the need to enhance status were common precipitants of aggression between patients. There was little evidence to suggest that aggression was used instrumentally to obtain tangible items, to reduce social isolation, or to observe the suffering of others in the absence of provocation. Results of these four studies have implications for the prediction and prevention of inpatient aggression, and for the treatment of aggressive inpatients. These are discussed, as are the limitations of this research and suggestions for further research. / thesis (BPsychology(Hons))--University of South Australia, 2004.

Der Einfluss unterschiedlich aggressiver Fusarium culmorum- und Fusarium graminearum-Isolate auf die Schadbildausprägung bei Winterweizen sowie die Möglichkeit der Befallskontrolle mit Mykorrhiza / Impact of aggressiveness of Fusarium culmorum and Fusarium graminearum isolates on the degree of symptoms as well as the possibility to control Fusarium spp. with mycorrhiza

Korn, Ulrike January 2012 (has links)
Impact of aggressiveness of Fusarium culmorum and Fusarium graminearum isolates on the degree of symptoms as well as the possibility to control Fusarium spp. with mycorrhiza Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is a serious problem worldwide and is mainly caused by Fusarium (F). culmorum and F. graminearum. Humid weather conditions, especially at anthesis and agricultural measures forcing pathogen attack cause epidemics repeatedly. FHB leads to yield and quality losses and also to contamination of harvest with mycotoxins that are toxic to humans and animals already in low concentrations. The most frequently occurring Fusarium toxins in wheat are deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEA). F. culmorum and F. graminearum isolates can differ in their potential to produce mycotoxins and to cause necrosis. Isolates of these two species were assigned to three different groups of aggressiveness on the basis of mycotoxin production and necrotic activity. Afterwards these isolates were inoculated on wheat in fields to ascertain their aggressiveness on the degree of symptoms. Only in the first year of the trial that was characterized by high precipitation amounts an influence of the aggressiveness and of an additional irrigation could be determined. Influenced by irrigation isolates of high aggressiveness reduced yield and 1000-kernel-weight. Besides, irrigation led to an increase of fungal growth and DON and ZEA production. An extremely dry summer in the second year of the trial prevented wheat infection by Fusarium isolates and subsequent colonization of the ears. Various agricultural measures are available to prevent Fusarium infection. The release of mycorrhizal fungi is one possibility. These fungi are able to strengthen plants and affect fungal pathogens antagonistically. Mycorrhizal fungi and Fusarium isolates were inoculated on wheat plants in climate chamber and fields to determine their potential for pest management. The impact of the interactions of these two organisms on wheat plants was analyzed. In climate chamber a reduction of Fusarium colonization was observed. Furthermore a higher rate of photosynthesis, a higher shoot dry weight and a higher number of ears were detected for the mycorrhizal plants compared to the non-mycorrhizal Fusarium inoculated plants. Altogether the negative effects of Fusarium spp. on the wheat plants were compensated by mycorrhizal colonization. In fields no influence of mycorrhizal colonization on Fusarium spp. could be determined. In the first year of the trial inoculation of wheat plants with mycorrhiza led to higher root and shoot dry weight as well as to higher 1000-kernel-weight in comparison to the wheat plants inoculated with Fusarium spp. These results could not be reproduced in the second year of the trial.

An Exploratory Study of the Relationship between Defensive and Supportive Talk, Verbal Aggressiveness and Communication Climate

Hajdasz, Peter A. 12 January 2012 (has links)
Significant research has investigated Jack Gibb’s model of defensive and supportive communication, but little has explored the influence of the type of talk -- defensive or supportive -- on perceptions of communication climate and the role that verbal aggressiveness may play in influencing both the types of talk and these perceptions. This thesis explored the relationship between defensive and supportive talk, verbal aggressiveness and communication climate using a mixed-method approach. Specifically, the Verbal Aggressiveness Scale was used to group participants for a dyadic problem solving exercise which generated conversational data that was analyzed qualitatively. Then, the Communication Climate Inventory was used to measure participants’ perceptions of the communication climate that emerged in their problem-solving dyad. The findings highlight factors that may influence the perception of communication climate. Examples of supportive talk that builds positive communication climates and limits the effects of verbal aggressiveness and examples of defensive talk that leads to negative communication climates are provided. This research demonstrates that language has an influence on communication climate through the words that shape the complex ways people perceive and understand each other and, interestingly, that the negative impact of defensive communication overrides the positive impact of supportive communication on the emergent communication climate.
