This study has the objective to analyse family production in the context of agrarian dynamic at Ortigueira Municipal District (State of Paraná - BR), with the aim to understand it within the process of production and organization of this agrarian space. By far, it searches to analyse family production specifically on rural communities of Pinhalzinho and Vila Rica, in a way to discuss family producers subordination by the capital, and as well their adopted social reproduction strategies to continue on the field. To reach this on we take, as theoric reference, the fact that family production structured by non-capitalistic production relationships is created and recreated by the contradictory process of capitalism development itself, which submits land rent to the capital and make it possible to submit the land labour too. By this way, the study is structured on five chapters. At the first, we research general factors that influenced territorial formation process on Ortigueira Municipal District, considering regional dynamic at the State of Paraná on its relations with the constitution of municipal land structure, searching to understand the occupational process of Pinhalzinho and Vila Rica communities. At chapter two we try to identify, based on agriculture census data, as well as municipal districts agricultural researches of IBGE (Brazilian Geographic and Statistics Institute), the social and economical expression of family production in the context of the agrarian dynamics which, although presenting reduced areas, reveals extremely significant participation on municipal agrarian production. The third chapter primes for family production analysis on rural communities of Pinhalzinho and Vila Rica, focusing social reproduction strategies adopted by the families to keep living on the field. The fourth chapter presents an analysis of annual accountancy of 14 production unities... (Complete abstract click electronic address below)

To Farm or not to Farm? Rural Youth Perceptions of Farming and their Decision of whether or not to Work as a Farmer: A Case Study of Rural Youth in Kiambu County, Kenya

Noorani, Mohamed January 2015 (has links)
The present study examines rural youth perceptions of farming and their decision of whether or not to work as a farmer by paying special attention to personal career aspirations, social (peer and parental) influences, and structural (land, finance, market, and agricultural education) constraints as the “push” and “pull” forces of farming. Interviews were conducted with 59 youth in six villages of Kiambu County, Kenya. Findings revealed that non-agricultural career aspirations, such as engineering and teaching, may create the desire to migrate away from farming. While many youth held negative perceptions of farming, which were reinforced through peer and parental influence, a sub-set of youth expressed a passion for farming and considered farming an attractive career path. However, the existence of structural barriers and the difficulties in overcoming them, especially access to land, limited their participation in farming.

Spaces for Developing Sociocultural Capital: A Case Study of Community Gardens in an Agrarian Community

Brown, Jessica Rae January 2012 (has links)
Common themes growing out of current research on community gardens center on issues in large urban areas including community-based responses to more healthful food options, local sustainability efforts, and combating urban crime. One area of research that is lacking is how sociocultural capital is generated in smaller metropolitan communities though community gardening. This thesis addresses this void as a means to begin understanding of how the sociocultural networks between community organizations and community gardeners form a symbiotic relationship of interconnected capital production within cities found in historically agrarian regions. This research includes a specific set of methods for investigating Fargo-Moorhead community gardens as places utilized for building sociocultural capital by providing gathering spaces, learning centers, food security, and social interactions. It sheds a new perspective on the intricate connections community gardening plays in the role of building sociocultural capital to aid in sustainability, particularly for, historically agrarian communities.

The NGOization of Indian Agricultural Development and Implications for the Agrarian Question

Hammond, Erin Elizabeth 27 June 2024 (has links)
India failed to answer the agrarian question after independence by not undertaking expansive land reforms and rural redistribution of resources and wealth. Instead, India followed the national bourgeois path of development, liberalizing agricultural production systems based on rural bourgeoisie and foreign interests. This path of development has led to unequal rural development and the NGOization of agricultural development. For agrarian and peasant producers in India, the liberal and privatized NGO development path of the Indian agriculture sector has had significant implications for their social, political, and economic well-being. The role of the private, for-profit NGO in the liberal, capitalist agriculture production system has not been given as much attention as the role of the Indian and foreign governments, international institutions, and transnational corporations. This thesis argues that private, for-profit non-governmental development organizations working in rural India reproduce imperial structures of foreign dependency and increases the subsumption of peasant and agrarian producers. NGOization conceals the global power structures at play within Indian agricultural production and can impede upon alternative solutions to the Indian agrarian question by appropriating local thought leaders, grassroots movements' narratives, and Indigenous knowledge, which further perpetuates imperial and colonial structures of rural communities and leads to the de-depeasantization of rural production systems. / Master of Arts / NGOs have arisen as popular and prominent actors within agriculture development. India's specific colonial history, the nature of its rural bourgeois and landlords, and the country's economic turn towards neoliberalism have led to the increased need for NGOs within rural communities. This thesis explores the implications of the NGOization of agricultural development in India, using extension methods as case studies.

Based on the persisting Question of Land in Brazil, and that of the necessity for Land Reform, this thesis analyses the discussion surrounding this issue, comparing the pros and cons of the two ways that researchers believe this should be carried out: the traditional (via dispossession) and the market (via concession and agrarian credit). To do this, the work is based on a critical review of the principle literature in the area and looks to find a consistent answer. It also examines the research on how the settlement projects, carried out by the INCRA and those financed by the World Bank, via the Cedula da Terra Project, impacted the lifestyles of the families / Mestrado / Desenvolvimento Economico, Espaço e Meio Ambiente / Mestre em Desenvolvimento Econômico
