Assessing and monitoring genetic patterns for conservation purposes with special emphasis on ScandinaviaPalmé, Anna January 2010 (has links)
Genetic variation is essential for biological evolution, for maintaining viability of populations, and to ensure ecosystem resilience. Increased human exploitation and environmental change result in rapid loss of biological variation, including genetic diversity. Measures to halt this trend require that biological diversity is assessed and monitored. Assessment of biodiversity includes identifying patterns of distribution of genetic variation within individual species. This thesis focuses on spatial genetic structure and assessment of units for conservation in continuous environments without apparent migration barriers. Empirical data refer to Scandinavia and the model species are northern pike (Esox lucius), brown trout (Salmo trutta), and harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). Questions regarding monitoring genetic diversity and releases of alien populations are also addressed. The spatial genetic structure of the northern pike in the Baltic Sea is characterized by isolation by distance and continuous genetic change. Positive genetic correlation was found among pike within geographical distances of less than 150 km. This distance may be used to suggest management units in this area. For the brown trout, genetic monitoring identified two sympatric populations within a small mountain lake system. The situation is characterized by a clear genetic but no apparent phenotypic dichotomy. Scientific support for a genetically distinct Baltic harbour porpoise population is limited, and the spatial genetic structure of the harbour porpoise in Swedish waters needs to be clarified. Data for launching conservation genetic monitoring programs is available for only a few Swedish species. Millions of forest trees, fish, and birds are released annually in Sweden and the documentation on these releases is poor. To meet responsibilities of safeguarding biodiversity and surveying biological effects of releases, there is an urgent need for studies aimed at evaluating genetic diversity. / At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Manuscript.

The Republic of China¡¦s Legislative Yuan approved International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the Enforcement Act of the two international human right covenants on March 31 th , 2009. The President promulgated the Enforcement Act of the two international human right covenants on April 22 th , 2009, and ratified the two international human right covenants on May 14th, 2009. Subsequently, the President ordered the Executive branch to promptly formulate a complete set of relevant legislative framework to domesticate the two international human right covenants. Such move symbolizes that the government has taken a significant step forward on the human right issues. Presently, the government should comprehensively review all the laws, regulations, administrative ordinances, and administrative measures for the protection and deepening of human rights especially after the ratification of the two international human right covenants.
Under the contemporary trend of embracing human rights, democratic states have incorporated alien into their national fundamental rights protection system. Within the scope of protection, aliens enjoy the same fundamental human rights as that of the country¡¦s nationals, and are equally protected under the constitution. However, aliens are different from nationals in certain regards. Therefore, on the issues of the suffrage, social welfare, and economic human rights, discrimination toward aliens are permissible under the two international human right covenants and the constitutions of each state. However, according to constitutional equal protection theory, discrimination on aliens could not be premised on prejudice, unless there is a legitimate purpose and reasonably distinguishable criteria. Under international human rights development in the 20th century, international norms likewise influence the rights enjoyed by aliens and the treatments to alien in a state, in addition to limits stipulated by constitution and the laws of the state.
The research purpose of this thesis is to discuss if the rights enjoyed by aliens and the treatment of aliens in our state conform with the two international human right covenants and consistent with the equal protection principle under the ROC constitution. In addition to the category of alien, there is a distinct set of laws and regulations that apply to people from the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau in Republic of China (Taiwan). To appreciate a macro picture, the scope of the article will include aliens, people from the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau, and identify the legal status of each category of people in Republic of China (Taiwan).
Based on the aforementioned research purpose, the thesis will firstly introduce the contents of the two international human right covenants and the constitutions of each state in order to understand the fundamental human rights that aliens enjoy. The thesis will also illustrate the discriminations permitted by the constitution of each state and the two international human right covenants, and refer to the legislative and judicial practice of each state, to analyze and identify reasonable discrimination criteria and judicial review standards for aliens in each state. Based upon the above criteria, the article will proceed to survey and discuss the relevant applicable regulations to aliens, people from the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Macau in Republic of China (Taiwan), and also review the multi-track legislative model. I will explore the existing norms and describe their inconsistencies with the two international human right covenants or their violations of the equal protection principle under the Constitution, and make recommendations for the legislators to amend the relevant legislations accordingly.

Using GIS as a means of modelling work rates and as a decision support tool in alien plant control management : the case study of the eMpofana river, KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.Ferraz, Wendy. January 2000 (has links)
The problems posed by alien invasive plants to our environment and the need for
clearing and control has been highlighted by the Working for Water (WFW)
programme. Alien plant control requires careful planning, including budgeting. To
date, costing and budgeting in alien plant control has largely been a combination of
experience on the part of weed 'experts', coupled with much guess work. Weed
controllers have through experience calculated the amount of time (or the work rate),
recorded as labour days, required for different control actions of different weed
habits. These work rates are for weed clearance under ideal conditions and do not
take into account the effect of factors such as gradient, access and distance to the
weed infestation.
Factors affecting the work rate has been researched and modelled by researchers
in both alien plant control and the timber industry. While the existing work rate
model is useful in its present theoretical state, the model may be improved upon to
make it more practical and applicable to the varying conditions of different areas.
This research built on existing theoretical research on alien control work rates, and
concentrated on two main areas: the adaption and incorporation of the existing
research on work rates into a Geographical Information System (GIS), and the
creation and demonstration of a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) for the
management of alien plant control. The eMpofana river in the KwaZulu-Natal
midlands was selected as the study area, as there was an existing alien plant control
programme.
Initially all factors, such as slope, access to weed infestations, terrain and
penetrability of infestations, affecting the work rate in the research area were
identified. An existing work rate model was then modified to account for the
conditions of the research area. Regression analysis was used to derive the
relationship between the various factors affecting work rate, creating a work rate
model applicable to the study area. Using the results of the regression analysis together with work rate figures adapted
from an existing alien plant control programme, a SDSS for alien plant control along
the eMpofana River was created. The use of the work rate model and the SDSS in
the development of weed control programmes was demonstrated by examining four
different management approaches, each having a different management objective .
The SDSS provides a spatial component to weed control planning and costing that
has thus far not existed.
What this research has achieved is the advancement of an alien control work rate
model from a theoretical to a more realistic costing process. While some factors
affecting work rate may not have been accounted for, the model does address the
present inaccuracies in labour costing, and ultimately alien plant control costing. The
research has highlighted the disadvantages of GIS in terms of affordability and
expertise.
The model has wider uses than the eMpofana River, and is the ground work for the
further development of a user friendly model applicable throughout South Africa.
More effective project budgeting will decrease the likelihood of project failure and this

The impacts of woody invasive alien plants on stream hydrogeomorphology in small headwater streams of KwaZulu-Natal.Bruton, Simon N. January 2010 (has links)
South Africa has a long history of problems with invasive alien species. In an assessment of alien invading plants and water resources in South Africa Versveld et al. (1998) estimated that Invasive Alien Plants (IAPs) in South Africa covered an area equivalent to the size of KwaZulu-Natal. However this area of invasion was primarily concentrated along the river courses of South Africa as alien invasions are arguably a riparian problem (Versveld et al., 1998). In a 1998 assessment of the distribution of IAPs in South Africa Versveld et al. (1998) found a total invasion extent of 8% for South Africa (including Lesotho), while KwaZulu-Natal had a higher total extent of invasion at 9.75%. However the authors noted the limitations of the IAP mapping assessment and stated that from personal observations and observers’ comments the area invaded by IAPs may be as much as 2-3 times greater than the 9.75% value obtained for KwaZulu-Natal. South Africa’s most widespread invasive alien tree (Dye and Jarmain, 2004), Acacia mearnsii (black wattle), is ubiquitous throughout KwaZulu-Natal, and invades most severely where water is plentiful, such as along watercourses and road verges. However following dispersal along rivers, A. mearnsii spreads into adjacent terrestrial habitats (Richardson and Kluge, 2008) including indigenous grassland and forest. A. mearnsii was introduced to South Africa in the middle 19th century to provide tanbark, woodchips, construction poles and firewood, and its introduction spread rapidly across KwaZulu-Natal through farmers and foresters (Henderson, 2001; WESSA, 2008). River and riparian zone rehabilitation is becoming accepted as having an essential role to play in the long term solution of water resource quality and supply problems and environmental health as a whole. As a result the impact of IAP invasions on water resources, ecological habitats and the delivery of ecosystem goods and services has undergone much scientific investigation (van Wilgen et al., 2008). Numerous studies have shown that, under most circumstances, removal of IAPs results in a general increase in streamflow and returns a stream to a more natural seasonal flow regime. However, scientific studies on the influences of woody IAPs on the hydrogeomorphology of riparian areas, and the resultant effects on stream hydrology and ecology, have undergone little scientific investigation in the South African context. Hydrogeomorphology studies the linkages of surface and subsurface water, and hydrological processes with landforms and geomorphic processes in temporal and spatial dimensions. As a result the discipline is well applied to the study of the interaction of, and interdisciplinary impacts of IAPs on riparian areas. Macdonald (2004:22) stated that there is a need to “investigate the interaction of IAPs with other aspects of water quality, for example soil erosion rates, including river channel and bank erosion.” In the early 1990s, after a study assessing the potential impact of IAPs on the geomorphology of river channels in South Africa, Rowntree (1991) stressed that further research on the influence of IAPs on stream geomorphology is required to guide truly effective riparian zone management. Since this study, little scientific work has been undertaken on this topic in the South African context. The literature review portion of this dissertation reviews the findings of various researchers as to how IAPs physically influence riparian habitats, specifically with reference to the role of IAPs in degrading riparian and streambank landscapes to an extent that streambank stability and stream channel form is adversely affected. This topic is introduced by illustrating the many functions that riparian zones can perform and some of the possible consequences of a loss of riparian habitat integrity. Worldwide awareness of the functions and values of riparian systems has led many countries to perform inventories of threatened and valuable riparian areas. A database of stream habitat integrity is useful for environmental impact assessments, development planning and resource inventories. Thus a multitude of stream survey and aquatic health sampling techniques and methodologies have been developed, some of which could be applied to assessing the influence of IAPs on riparian zones. 1.1 Research Aims and Objectives This dissertation forms a research study based on field research centred around field methods and tools developed after a review of relevant literature. The key aims of this research study are to; · refine an international river habitat survey method for application within South Africa, and · develop a test case to implement the developed method in analysing the impacts of IAPs on stream hydrogeomorphology in small headwater streams of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. These aims are achieved through the following objectives; · investigate the current body of knowledge covering the impact of woody IAP invasions on streambank stability and channel form, · review available stream survey methods and develop a stream survey methodology which can be applied to investigate the relationships between woody IAP invasions and streambank stability and form within headwater streams of KwaZulu-Natal, · investigate the relationships illustrated by the data after applying the developed stream survey tools and fieldwork methodology, and · discuss any shortfalls of the developed tools and methods, and suggest future needs. The hypothesis of the study contends that, within the focus of this study, invasion of headwater streams by woody IAPs can result in; · increased channel incision and bank steepening, and · an increase in streambank instability. 1.2 Document Structure Chapters 2 to 4 form a review of current literature to establish a base of understanding of the implications, processes and components involved in the invasion of riparian zones by Invasive Alien Plants. In Chapter 5 the approaches to stream surveying are assessed and selected methods of stream survey seen as applicable to this study are reviewed. Based on these findings, a method of stream survey for application in this study is developed and described in Chapter 6 following a description of the fieldwork sites and methodology. Chapter 7 provides an extensive analysis and exploration of the results of the various components of the fieldwork, which are then discussed in Chapter 8. Frugivorous mutualisms in a native New Zealand forest : the good the bad and the uglyMacFarlane, Archie January 2012 (has links)
Widespread anthropogenic invasions have prompted concerns that naturalized organisms could threaten biodiversity. In particular, invasive weeds can negatively affect native biota through a variety of means, including disrupting mutualisms. This thesis was designed to observe and test dispersal mutualisms in a native forest during autumn when the majority of plant species are fruiting.
In this thesis I examined whether the invasive plant barberry (Berberis glaucocarpa) was influencing the behaviour of a native frugivore bellbird (Anthornis melanura) and a range of dispersal related services in a native forest, Kowhai Bush near Kaikoura. To test these 18 banded bellbirds were followed through autumn 2011. These observe bellbirds were split between control and test bird. Barberry fruit was removed from the test bird territories. I recorded whether bellbirds changed their territory sizes, foraging and daily behaviours. During 52 hours of observations, bellbirds were never observed feeding on barberry fruit. No significant changes to bellbird behaviour or territories were observed after the removal of barberry fruit. Bellbird diet overall was dominated by invertebrates (83% of foraging observations), with smaller contributions from fruit (16%, nearly all on Coprosma robusta), nectar and honeydew. Since bellbirds did not eat barberry fruit, removal of this weed is unlikely to negatively affect bellbirds during autumn.
Which other bird species were dispersing barberry was recorded. I recorded 242 hours of videotape footage on 24 fruiting plants. A total of 101 foraging events were recorded of 4 different bird species: silvereyes (Zosterops lateralis) 42 visits, blackbirds (Turdus merula) 27 visits, song thrush (Turdus philomelos) 29, and starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) 3 visits. The species differed in the mean length of time they spent in plants, so the overall contribution to barberry fruit removal was 32.6% silvereyes, 24.3% blackbirds, 42.9% song thrush and 0.1% starlings.
To find out the relative contribution of exotic and native birds to dispersal of fruits in Kowhai Bush, I mist-netted 221 birds of 10 species and identified any seeds in the 183 faeces they deposited. A total of 21 plant species were observed fruiting in Kowhai Bush during this time. A total of 11 different plant species were identified from 1092 seeds. Birds were further observed feeding on 3 other plant species which were not observed in faecal samples. This left 7 plants with unobserved dispersal vectors. There were likely four main dispersers, bellbirds, silvereyes, song thrush and blackbirds and five minor, brown creeper (Mohoua novaeseelandiae), tui (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae), fantails (Rhipidura fuliginosa), dunnock (Prunella modularis) and starlings. However there was considerable variability between these bird species dispersal abilities. Introduced birds’ song thrush and blackbirds were observed dispersing naturalized plant seeds at higher than expected rates in comparison to native frugivores bellbirds and silvereyes. I also measured the gape sizes on mist netted birds and on samples of fruit from Kowhai Bush. Both silvereyes and bellbirds were found to be eating fruit larger than their gape, but despite this two native (Hedycarya arborea and Ripogonum scandens) and three exotic plants (Vitis vinifera, Taxus baccata and Crataegus monogyna) had large fruit that were probably mainly dispersed by song thrush and blackbirds. Hence, introduced birds were important seed dispersers for large fleshy fruited seeds in Kowhai Bush. Demonstrating that interactions among native and exotic flesh fruited plants and frugivores is important within forest communities.

Anglophone women, working in a new capacity as federal civil servants, exercised a significant influence on Canadian immigration policy in the interwar years. This dissertation focuses on the women's division of the Canadian Department of Immigration and Colonization, an agency charged with recruiting British women for domestic service from 1919 to 1938. The division was a product of the women's wing of the social reform movement and prevailing theories of gender difference and anglo-superiority. Tracing its nearly twenty years of operations shows how the division, initially regarded as a source of imperial strength and a means of English Canada's cultural survival, came to symbolize the disadvantages of Canada's connection to Great Britain and supposed weaknesses inherent in the female character. This institutional study explores the real and imagined connections among gender, imperialism, and the changing socio-economic landscape of interwar Canada.

<p>Arundo donax is an invasive species that mostly impacts on sensitive riparian ecosystems. Arundo is also invasive in South Africa, though less is known about its ecology, biology, and impacts. Since California and the Western Cape of South AFrica have similar Mediterranean-type climates, we could assume that the impacts of Arundo on ecosystems in California are likely to be similar in the Western Cape, and that control methods used could be extrapolated for use in South Africa. This thesis attempted to determine what impact Arundo has on biodiversity at the community-ecosystem level.</p>

Physiology, comparative genomics and germplasm development for improvement of salt tolerance in hexaploid wheatMullan, Daniel John January 2006 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] Lophopyrum elongatum, a wild relative of wheat, can be used as a source of novel genes for improving the salt tolerance of bread wheat. Na+ `exclusion? is a major physiological mechanism for salt tolerance in the wheat L. elongatum amphiploid, and a large proportion (~50%) of the improved Na+ `exclusion? is contributed by a gene(s) on chromosome 3E. This study integrated physiological analysis with comparative genomics to identify gene orthologues that may regulate Na+ transport, and designed and implemented molecular markers for developing wheat L. elongatum recombinant lines with reduced portions of L. elongatum chromatin retaining the Na+ `exclusion? trait. Physiological analysis of leaf Na+ accumulation in wheat L. elongatum substitution lines confirmed that the 3E chromosome contributes a major effect on reduced leaf Na+ accumulation in wheat when grown at 200 mM NaCl. Candidate genes from the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, controlling Na+ transport into and from cells (SOS1, HKT1) or compartmentalisation within vacuoles (NHX1, NHX5, AVP1, AVP2) were targeted for comparative analysis in wheat. Wheat gene orthologues were identified by BLAST searching to identify either FL-cDNAs or ESTs, which were subsequently used to amplify genomic DNA, and orthologues confirmed by similar intron-exon structure between Arabidopsis and rice. Intron-exon comparisons showed the majority of exons were conserved between Arabidopsis, rice and wheat, but also indicated exon shuffling events since divergence from a common ancestor. Gene orthologues were assigned to homoeologous chromosomes and non-syntenic regions between wheat and L. elongatum, with the SOS1 orthologue located on group 3 chromosomes in wheat and L. elongatum. ... The recombinant line 524-568 contains a small introgression on the distal end of the long arm of wheat chromosome 3A and represents the most desirable line presently available for further germplasm development. The main outcomes of this thesis have been an increased understanding of the physiology and evolution of orthologues for Na+ transport in wheat and L. elongatum, improved methodologies for designing alien-specific PCR markers, and the development of overlapping recombinant lines that provide a source of novel genes for pyramiding into wheat and improving its tolerance to salt stress.
