MSc (Botanty) / Department of Botany / Background: Problem plants and alien invasive weed species are part of today‟s ecological
transformation. Ethnobotanical literature on ecological prominence and ethical values of
problem alien weeds is scant and should be documented to avoid loss of valuable species.
Aim: The study was aimed at documenting problem weeds and alien invasive plant species
considered to be beneficial in deep rural communities.
Materials and method: Purposeful triangulation research methods were used to ensure the
proper gathering of both qualitative and quantitative data sets.
Results and conclusion: Some problem weeds and alien invasive plant species are being
utilized by local people to maintain their livelihood. A total of 78 plant species from 33
families were recorded. These plant species belonged to diverse growth habits, namely:
climbers, herbaceous, succulents, shrubs, trees as well as creepers. Recorded problem
weeds and alien invasive plant species were contributing towards ecological, medicinal and
social values. These included being utilized as a source of food (14), fruits (4), medicinal
(31), ornamentals (7), firewood (3), social (2) and multiple purposes (17). The main utilized
families were Asteraceae (14.1%) and Solanaceae (14.1%). These families were mostly
utilized for the purpose of medicinal and food. Plant species that were widely used are as
follows: Achyrathes aspera L., Agave sisalana L., Amaranthus spinosus L., Anredera
cordifolia L., Canna indica L., Centella asiatica L., Chenopodium album L., Chenopodium
ambrosioides L. and Chromolaena odorata (L.) R. M. King and H. Rob. The dominant
category for problem weeds and alien invasive plant species was 1b (44%) followed by
weeds (35%), category 2 (9%), invaders (5%), category 3 (4%) and 1% for both category 1,
1a as well as X3. The results revealed that the legislative listing of plant species as problem
weeds and alien invasive species was based on single knowledge basis system, rather than
on multi-dimensional knowledge systems. Therefore, this study recommended that for
judgment to be considered in decision-making, it should be based on species-specificity as
well as multi-dimensional-knowledge basis. The reconciliation of inherent grapples among
scientific and indigenous knowledge systems could possibly be underpinned by equal
legislative consideration for the aforementioned knowledge systems especially in the
establishment and implementation of environmental regulations. This could also aid with the
provision to support transformation in South Africa and worldwide.

Ethnomedicinal survey of invasive alien plant species used in the Capricorn District, Limpopo Province, South AfricaCherane, Mosibudi Wendy 20 September 2019 (has links)
MSc (Botany) / Department of Botany / Invasive alien plants (IAPs) are non-native species that have spread beyond the
introduction site; become abundant to an extent that they serve as agents of change
that also threaten native biological diversity (Garcia-Berthou, 2007). IAPs have
medicinal applications for the treatment of various aliments in humans (Jäger et al.,
1996).
In this study, an ethnomedicinal survey was conducted on medicinal uses of invasive
alien plant species in order to identify and investigate the various disease treatment
methods employed by Bapedi traditional health practitioners within Capricorn District.
Six traditional health practitioners were randomly selected, via the snowball method
from each of the five local municipalities namely: Aganang, Blouberg, Lepelle-Nkupi,
Molomole and Polokwane. The whole survey included 30 traditional health
practitioners. A semi structured questionnaire was administered to document
information about the medicinal uses of IAPs from participants. The collected data
from the questionnaire was captured in Microsoft Excel 2010 and analyzed using
descriptive statistics.
The study recorded 22 IAPs belonging to 14 plant families. Records or data collected
show invasive alien plants species to have been used for treatment of different
alignments amongst Bapedi traditional health practitioners. Plant families with the
most recorded species include: Solanaceae and Myrtaceae with 18.2% for both of
them. The plant parts most frequently used in descending order were as follows: roots

(40%), followed by the leaves (39%), fruits (7%), thorns (6%), bark (4%), seeds (2%)
and lastly stems (2%). Decoction was recorded as the most dominant method used
during medicinal preparations (n = 176) and flu was recorded as the most treated
ailment amongst traditional health practitioners (n = 29).
Apart from clearing IAPs as part of management strategy by South African
government, there are other alternative innovative ways that can be employed to
ensure that the number of IAPs introduced does not exceed beyond measure.This
could be achieved by encouraging local people to use them as either medicinal
sources or by incorporating them into any other local ethnobotanical use. The new
innovative ways (such as traditional health practitioners utilizing the IAPs instead of
endangered plants or indigenous plants species) can bring in some form of relief to
the already declining indigenous species populations. Research scholars from
different research institutes and higher education research centres can regard IAPs
used medicinally as source of new pharmaceutical leads to create new medications.
With such attention turned to alien invasive species, their survival as well as their
spread will be kept on check at the same time creating a control measure to their
spread with little effort. Further laboratory-based studies are needed to determine
efficiency and safety of the IAPs used by traditional health practitioners in this study. / NRF

Current literature suggests that little, if any, research has been conducted in South Africa to determine the impact of alien invasive trout on indigenous amphibian biodiversity. The primary aim of the research project was to establish whether waterfalls are seasonally important in protecting the indigenous Natal Cascade Frog Hadromophryne natalensis tadpole populations from predation by alien rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and brown trout Salmo trutta at two sampling areas located at Injesuthi and Monk‟s Cowl Nature Reserve within the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site (UDPWHS). The dissertation argues in favour of a biotic rationale, namely trout predation, as being the primary cause for the decline of H. natalensis tadpoles below the waterfalls and systematically negates the influence of geo-physical (abiotic) environmental factors on tadpole abundance. ecology. Knowledge of biodiversity distribution is essential, especially with the current
threat of climate change and invasion by alien species. Since the impact of climate
change and alien species will be, and has already been pronounced in polar regions,
information on the current spatial distributions of biota in these regions is critical to
predict the consequences of climate change and alien species on the future survival,
distribution and abundance of indigenous biota. This study was conducted on the sub-
Antarctic Prince Edward Islands (consisting of Marion Island and Prince Edward Island),
which have experienced rapid climate changes over the past 50 years. Additionally, a
number of alien plant, vertebrate and invertebrate (also microarthropod) species have
been introduced to these islands. Since microarthropods (mites and springtails) play an
essential role in decomposition and mineralization of plant material on the islands, the
loss of microarthropods from decomposer communities might have disastrous results for
ecosystem processes. Therefore it is essential to know the current distributions of
microarthropods in order to predict future distributions patterns in reaction to climate
change and invasive species. In this study, the spatial distribution of mites and springtails
inhabiting the cushion plant Azorella selago Hook, were examined at different scales of
observation. Firstly, the microarthropod community was examined at a fine scale. The
relationship between microarthropod species richness and abundance and plant size,
isolation, within-plant variability, grass cover and microclimate variables were
investigated. Thereafter, the spatial variability of microarthropod abundances was
examined within stands of plants, with statistical methods using varying degrees of
locational information to determine if microarthropod abundance is random, regular or
aggregated at this scale. Further, the spatial variability of microarthropod communities in
A. selago at different altitudes and on different sides of Marion Island, i.e. island-wide
scale, was examined. The last scale of observation was the island-wide scale, in which
microarthropod assemblages were compared between Marion Island and Prince Edward
Island, as well as in different plant species. Microarthropods showed spatial
heterogeneity within A. selago plants (higher abundances in eastern and southern sides of plants), island-wide (lower springtail abundance on the eastern side of the island and at
high altitudes) and between islands (more alien species on Marion Island). In contrast,
microarthropod abundance was not spatially heterogeneous within a stand of plants, i.e.
mostly randomly distributed. The possible mechanisms responsible for these patterns
differ between scales, and range from temperature and nutrient availability at the within
plant and island wide scale to alien species between islands. Climate change is likely to
alter these distribution patterns of microarthropods, either directly (unfavourable climate
for indigenous species growth, development and dispersal) or indirectly (favouring alien
microarthropod species; increase in grass cover on A. selago plants may alter community
structure). The information presented here, is essential for predicting the possible impacts
of climate change on microarthropods in fellfield ecosystems on sub-Antarctic islands. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die ruimtelike verspreiding van diere en plante op verskillende skale is ‘n sentrale tema
in ekologie. Kennis van die verspreiding van biodiversiteit is belangrik, veral met die
huidige bedreiging van klimaatsverandering en indringerspesies. Omdat die impak van
klimaatsverandering en indringerspesies in die poolstreke alreeds duidelik is en nog meer
so sal word, is inligting oor die huidige ruimtelike verspreiding van biota in hierdie streke
noodsaaklik. Hierdie studie is op die sub-Antarktiese Prins Edward-eilande (bestaande uit
Marion Eiland en Prins Edward Eiland) uitgevoer, waar die klimaat vinnig verander het
oor die afeglope 50 jaar. Bykomend is ‘n aantal indringer plant, vertebraat en invertebraat
(ook mikroartropood) spesies op die eilande ingebring. Omdat mikroartropoda (myte en
springsterte) ‘n baie belangrike rol in ontbinding en mineralisering van plantmateriaal op
hierdie eilande speel, sal die verlies van mikroartropoda uit die ontbindingsgemeenskap
rampspoedige gevolge vir die prosesse in die ekosisteem hê. Kennis van die huidige
verpreiding van mikroartropoda is dus noodsaaklik om die toekomstige
verspreidingspatrone, asook oorlewing en volopheid van inheemse spesies in reaksie op

verspreiding van myte en springsterte wat in die kussingplant Azorella selago Hook

rykheid en volopheid en plantgrootte, isolasie, binne-plant variasie, gras bedekking en

kante van plante), asook regoor Marion Eiland (minder springstert individue aan die

Comparative impact of invasive alien trees and vineyards on arthropod diversity in the Cape floristic region, Western CapeMagoba, Rembuluwani Norman Nicholas 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Conservation Ecology and Entomology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Invasive alien trees (IATs) and agriculture are rapidly altering the capacity of ecosystems to provide a variety of essential services, with decreasing habitat quality having an adverse effect on arthropod biodiversity. Although both agricultural intensification and IATs have an impact on ecosystems, it is unclear which of these two is currently the most severe. Here I compare the influences of vineyards and IATs on arthropod diversity in the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) from two perspectives. Firstly, insect diversity from four different vegetation types (native fynbos, IATs, cleared invasive alien trees (CIATs) and vineyards), and their ecotones were assessed. Secondly, soil compaction in the different vegetation types was assessed and compared to determine how soil compaction relates to arthropod species richness and abundance.
Surface-active arthropods were used for these evaluations, as they were considered to be the most abundant, yet sensitive groups for these comparative assessments. Pitfall trapping, which has been widely used for such comparative studies, was the method of choice. Additionally, as a result of incidental wildfires at some of the study sites (IATs and fynbos vegetation), it was decided opportunistically to assess recovery of arthropod diversity following the impact of fire.
The results categorically indicate that IATs had by far the most significant impact, in comparison with vineyards, in reducing arthropod diversity and changing assemblage composition. Both IATs and vineyards, not surprisingly, supported lower arthropod diversity compared to fynbos, while CIATs supported arthropod species richness comparable to that of fynbos. However, different invertebrate species responded differently to IAT invasion, with some species even adapted to conditions in IAT patches. Environmental factors such as leaf litter and soil compaction were strongly correlated with arthropod species richness. However, other factors, such as soil moisture content, were not correlated with species richness, despite varying significantly between different vegetation types. IATs were found to reduce soil compaction, while vineyards increased soil compaction.
The ecotone between adjacent land-use types was important for sustaining high arthropod species richness, particularly for the CIATs/fynbos ecotone, followed by the interface between CIATs/vineyard and vineyard/fynbos. Some species even preferred ecotones.
Surface-active invertebrate species richness declined substantially immediately after fire in both IATs and fynbos. Nevertheless, recovery was rapid, with some species recolonizing or re-establishing within three months. Indeed, both species richness and abundance were high following fire. Fire had no significant impact on arthropod assemblage within IATs, despite having a serious impact in the fynbos where a different arthropod assemblage was observed after fire. The recovery of the historic assemblages may be dependent on both the pre-fire composition of the habitat and its adjacent vegetation.
Effective co-operation among conservation biologists, farmers, and landowners to actively plan the future of CFR landscape biodiversity is required. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Indringer uitheemse bome (IUB) en landbou bedrywighede is vinnig besig om die kapasiteit van ekosisteme vir die voorsiening van „n verskeidenheid van noodsaaklike dienste, met „n afname in habitatkwaliteit en „n nadelige uitwerking op artropood biodiversiteit, te verander. Alhoewel beide, landbou intensifikasie en IUB‟s, ‟n impak op ekosisteme uitoefen, is dit onduidelik watter van hierdie twee huidig die mees ernstige een is. In hierdie studie vergelyk ek die invloed van wingerde en IUB‟s op artropood diversiteit in die Kaapse Floristiese Streek (KFS) vanuit twee perspektiewe. Eerstens, insekdiversiteit van vier verskillende vegetasietipes (natuurlike fynbos, IUB‟s, verwyderde indringer uitheemse bome (VIUB‟s) en wingerde) en hulle ekotone is bepaal. Tweedens, is grondverdigting in en van die verskillende vegetasietipes ondersoek en vergelyk om te bepaal hoe grondverdigting verband hou met artropood spesies rykheid en volopheid.

Verskillende invertebrate spesies het egter verskillend gereageer op IUB indringing, en sommige spesies het selfs by toestande in IUB kolle aangepas. Omgewingsfaktore soos blaarafval en grondverdigting was sterk gekorrelleer met artropood spesies rykheid. Ander faktore, soos grondvoginhoud, was egter nie in ooreenstemming met spesies rykheid nie, ten spyte van ‟n beduidende wisseling tussen verskillende vegetasietipes. IUB‟s het grondverdigting verminder, terwyl by wingerde grondverdigting toegeneem het. Die ekotone tussen aanliggende grondgebruike was belangrik om hoë artropood spesies rykheid, veral by die VIUB‟s/fynbos ekotoon, gevolg deur die kontaksones tussen VIUB‟s/wingerd en wingerd/fynbos, te onderhou. Sommige spesies het selfs ekotone verkies.
Oppervlak-aktiewe invertebraat spesies rykheid het onmiddelik na brand in beide, IUB‟s en fynbos, wesenlik afgeneem. Tog was herstel vinnig, met sekere spesies wat binne drie maande teruggekeer of hulle hervestig het. Inderdaad was beide, spesies rykheid en volopheid, hoog na ‟n brand. Brand het geen noemenswaardige invloed op artropood groeperings binne IUB‟s gehad nie, ten spyte van ‟n ernstige impak in fynbos waar ‟n verskillende artropood groepering na ‟n brand waargeneem is. Die herstel van die historiese groeperings van beide, die voor-brand samestelling van die habitat en sy aangrensende plantegroei, mag afhanklik wees.
Effektiewe en aktiewe samewerking tussen bewaringsbioloë, boere, en grondeienaars om die toekoms van KFS landskap biodiversiteit te beplan, word benodig.

Factors affecting alien grass invasion into West Coast Renosterveld fragmentsVan Rooyen, Suretha 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: With only 1.76% conserved West Coast Renosterveld remaining it is crucial to prioritize
the conservation and management of this fragile vegetation type. Because of its
occurrence on fertile soils, renosterveld has been cleared for cultivation and other
agricultural use and is thus fragmented to a critical point. These remaining fragments
are subject to extensive edge effects and the exact parameters of a viable fragment must
still be determined. The extent of alien grass species invasion into remnant
renosterveld patches was determined using data collected using the line-intercept
method. Sampling included three different management treatment areas adjacent to old
lands: 1) a recently burned area, 2) a grazed area and 3) an unburnedlungrazed area
providing a control sample. Additionally all small-scale soil disturbances along the
lines were recorded.
Results showed that Briza spp., Bromus spp. and Avena fatua were the most significant
invading alien grass species. There was a significantly high variation between alien
grass cover in each treatment, with the grazed area containing the highest overal! level
of alien grass invasion. The control area, with the exclusion of fire and animal activity,
showed minimum alien grass invasion. Edge effects were apparent in all treatments,
but were lowest in the control area, where percentage alien grass cover significantly
decreased after a distance of fifteen meters into the remnant patch. A weak positive
correlation between the occurrence of alien grass and indigenous grass was found, as
well as evidence of a weak association between alien grass cover and shrub cover. The
possibility that small-scale soil disturbances could be an important contributing factor
to alien grass invasion was supported by the positive correlation between disturbances
and percentage alien grass cover. A positive correlation was found between the
occurrence of indigenous grass and small-scale soil disturbances, while shrub cover
tended to be less associated with animal activity.
It is concluded that the correct management regime could effectively control the
excessive invasion of alien grass species into the remnant renosterveld patches.
Grazing (including all animal activity and small-scale soil disturbances) was the main
facilitator of alien grass establishment - even dominating the prominent consequences of edge effects by facilitating alien grass establishment much deeper into the remnant
patches. It could be assumed that a precise balance of low-pressure grazing and fire
management should be established to enable the effective control of alien grass species
while maintaining optimum biodiversity.

vrugbare grond waarop renosterveld voorkom, het veroorsaak dat dit uitgeroei word
om eerder die kultivering van ekonomies produktiewe landbou gewasse moontlik te

die renosterveld fragment in. 'n Swak positiewe korrelasie tussen die voorkoms van
uitheemse grasse en inheemse gras spesies was aangeteken, asook bewyse van 'n swak
negatiewe assosiasie tussen die uitheemse gras spesies en die inheemse bosse. Soos
verwag, is daar bewyse gevind vir die teorie dat kleinskaalse grond-versteurings 'n
belangrike fasiliterende faktor is vir uitheemse gras vestiging. Daar was 'n duidelike
positiewe korrelasie tussen hierdie grond-versteurings en die persentasie uitheemse
gras grondbedekking. Dieselfde positiewe assosiasie was gevind tussen die inheemse
gras en hierdie kleinskaalse grond-versteurings, terwyl die inheemse bossie duidelik
minder verbind was met die verskynsel.
Die gevolgtrekking is gemaak dat 'n korrekte bestuurs-plan die indringing van
uitheemse grasse effektief sal kan beheer. Dier aktiwiteite (insluitende beweiding,

Culture of indifference : dilemmas of the Filipina domestic helpers in Hong KongKennelly, Estelle M. January 2008 (has links)
In this study, an examination of the everyday experiences of the contract migrant Filipina domestic helpers exposes a culture of indifference which pervades the Hong Kong society on all levels--individual, community, and judiciary. At the centre of the abuses inflicted upon the Helpers is the employment contract with extraordinarily restrictive terms which promotes abuse by many employers. This study also looks at the transnational informal social infrastructure which has been organized by the Filipino community to mediate the hostile working environment engendered by the indifference of the global economic and political climate upon their lives. Faced with the task of implementing new policies for controlling labour migration into Hong Kong, the legislators have focused on the end result and finding the means with which to accomplish their goal. Embedded within this process are unexamined cultural mores and practices. Although the starting point is to benefit the community, by providing domestic helpers to serve the middle and upper class households, too often the abusive consequences to individual migrants are ignored as the women become the means to an end. Migration has often been viewed as an aberration to the notion of the sedentary community. Treated as an anomaly, it is the migrant who problematizes simple theoretical positions of social organization and structure. The migrant is always treated as the one who does not conform to the ideal community and is conveniently merged into existing social categories, such as the lower status of women in Hong Kong, and the lower status of domestic workers -- relegated thereby to the periphery of the society's consciousness.

L'affaire Baker, de la Cour suprême du Canada, est notre point de référence
puisqu'elle prône, entre autres, le respect de l'intérêt supérieur de l'enfant en
matière d'immigration. À partir de cette affirmation et de la pratique législative et
jurisprudentielle qui s'en est suivie, arriverait-on un jour à reconnaître la
protection du droit de l'étranger à mener une vie familiale normale comme il se
fait en Europe ? Ce chemin lui serait-il accessible ? Ce projet vise à démontrer
cette évolution juridique qui pourrait survenir au Canada dans le cadre d'un plus
grand respect des droits fondamentaux de la personne. / This thesis relates to the right of immigration. It concems aliens who are
aimed with a removal order in spite of the fact that they have family bonds in
Canada. The Baker case, of the Supreme Court of Canada, is our point of reference
since it preaches, inter alia, the respect of the best interest of the child as regards to
immigration. Starting from this assertion and legislative & jurisprudential practices
that followed from the case, would one arrive one day at recognizing to every
migrant the right to a normal family life like it is done in Europe? Would this path
be accessible? This project aims at showing this legal evolution that could occur in
Canada within the framework of a larger respect of the fundamental human rights.

The essay concludes that sculpture does not need a definition.
