The use of junior historical fiction in the classroom

Pelinka, Darlene 30 August 1972 (has links)
The use of American historical fiction in an eighth grade social studies or language arts class has not been fully explored, so its literary and social science value is questionable. In order to establish its worth and methods for its use, research into desirable 1iterary goals for adolescents, implications and purposes of historical fiction in general and for youth in particular, a bibliography of novels, and an evaluative survey of specific novels written for youth needed to be done. The research indicates that some critics believe that most junior novels have little to offer youth and that they are poorly written. A minority find that they are useful as an example of a literary genre and as a model for the exploration of adolescent problems, frustrations, and decision making alternatives. Opinions on the value of historical fiction also vary. Some writers conclude that it is largely romantic and a reflection of contemporary times in historical dress, while others have indicated that it conveys an emotional and spiritual feeling for an era through its presentation of historical figures and events and student involvement. Many writers on the subject are ambitious when they consider what junior novels and junior historical novels should accomplish. They list a variety of personal, literary, and conceptual goals. They itemize suitable aims for students such as character building, personal problem solving, an understanding of the mechanics of plot and characterization, an understanding of historical events, and the motivations of figures involved in them, a "feeling" for an era, knowledge of our democratic heritage, even an understanding of what history means. This survey and analysis of specific novels chosen from different American historical eras explores the pertinence of these opinions and goals to novels and briefly verifies the historical accuracy. Part Three handles the problem of methods of use and adaptation in the classroom by specifying alternatives for teachers' consideration. The survey determines that junior American historical fiction is useful to study as a literary genre, though imperfect. If it is used, students must be aware of the imperfections; principally shallow character development or inadequate and overly romantic plots. As a model of personal relevance to youth, historical fiction is not outstanding even though nearly half of the novels contain obvious efforts to build character and several have a theme about growing up. The historical value in these novels varies; most are largely romantic with contemporary main characters who cannot control their situations but can control their destinies. Some provide historical data that gives the reader an insight into specific events, historical figures, or the emotional feelings prevalent during an era. The themes in half the novels stress the issues of the times in which they are set. The surveyed novels include examples of political, social, psychological, economic, religious, cultural, and great man interpretations of history. Social and psychological interpretations predominate, and a majority imply that societies rather than people make history. This survey concludes that junior American historical fiction is relevant for classroom use. Teacher familiarity with the novels and his continuing exploration of divergent applications for use by individual students or classes can make them successful, informative, and enhance student interest in history.

Supported by the principles of Compared Literature, the present study investigates the main novels’ productions on the poetry of the discovery in America, whose fictional production includes works with different discourses, from the apology to parody and carnivalization. Such re-elaborations have as one of their sources the dichotomic images of Columbus widespread by both the traditional historiography and the new history, as well as the historical novel. Based on a comprehensive corpus of historical novels produced in different periods in America, we firstly intend to prove that this literary genre in North America has produced a discourse of apology since Romanticism until contemporary times, and then, by approaching the Hispanic American fictional production of the theme – which started around the 70s of the 20th century –, to show that this kind of historical novel has eventually influenced the whole fictional production on the discovery in the whole American continent. This fact made some of the North American novelist align themselves with the aesthetic aspects achieved by the Hispanic American Literature. As a consequence of this process, the current North American Literature presents a number of works including the dialectic of apology and parody in relation to the discovery, which can be confirmed by the analyses of works from our corpus. In the selection of this corpus, we considered the following criteria: works classified as contemporary American historical novels; works produced in each of the three Americas; and works which are representative of the different... Configuração, desconstrução e reconfiguração: Cristóvão Colombo na literatura americana / Configuration, deconstruction and reconfiguration: Christopher Columbus in American Literature

Machado, Douglas William 15 February 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2017-07-10T18:55:42Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Douglas Machado.pdf: 1128189 bytes, checksum: 2749c41ecd8769a7b9ae1e25a54f99f1 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-15 / The present research aims to produce a comparative reading of Columbia (1892), written by John Musick, Los perros del Paraíso (1989), by the Argentinean Abel Posse and A Caravela dos insensatos: uma viagem pela renascença (2006), by the Brazilian Paulo Novaes to expose the characterization of Christopher Columbus' figure in American Literature as a hero on the discovery of America, as well as its deconstruction and its subsequent reconfiguration. The novels in which this comparison was carried out are part of the fictional hybrid genre called historical novel. The first one, written in North America, is a traditional historical novel and it reveals Columbus as a mythical hero of the New World. The second one, written inside the Spanish American context, is a new Latin American historical novel that presents processes of deconstruction of the existing historical speech and gives visibility to the Latin American people so that they are able to make a new reading on their own past. However, the third one, written more recently in our country, brings back the traditional historical novel model and reconfigures Christopher Columbus' traditional heroic-mythical image. Therefore, this novel ignores the voice of the Latin American people and all the critical and deconstructionist production of the Spanish American Literature done along the 20th century, which was based upon deconstructionist resources like parody, carnivalization, intertextuality, anachronies, irony, multiperspectivism and much more. These writings are constantly questioning power relations, control of truth and also deconstruct speeches that had been shaping Latin American s identity. Thus, our research aims to explain the relationship between American and the old European metropolis: colonization, decolonization and maintenance of certain aspects from the colonizatory dependence of America. These processes are reinforced by literary creations; whether they are critical as the new historical novel or traditional, still appealing to the permanence of colonizatory processes that occur by rescuing ethnocentric models of historical and literary references. To do so, we will use a bibliography which enables us to follow the course of the historical novel genre from its European origins until it became the high critical hybrid genre that currently is written in Latin America / A presente pesquisa apresenta uma leitura comparada entre Columbia (1892), do estadunidenese John Musick; Los perros del paraíso (1989), do argentino Abel Posse e A Caravela dos Insensatos: uma viagem pela renascença (2006), do brasileiro Paulo Novaes para evidenciar a caracterização da figura de Cristóvão Colombo na literatura americana sob as configurações do herói do descobrimento, a desconstrução dessa imagem heroico/mítica e a sua posterior reconfiguração.
