Land imprinting as an effective way of soil surface manipulation to revegetate arid lands

Research was conducted over a 2-year period at the University of Arizona Campus and Oracle Agricultural Centers to evaluate the effectiveness of surface imprintation in revegetating arid lands. Introduction of forage leguminous species into arid rangelands through land imprintat ion was another objective of this study. The soil at the Campus Center is a Brasito, mixed thermic, typic torripsamment with a sandy-loam texture. This was compared with a White House, fine mixed thermic, Ustollic haplargid with a sandyloam texture at the Oracle Center. Natural rains were the only source of irrigation at Oracle. At the Campus Center, however, a sprinkler irrigation system was installed to match rains with that at the Oracle Center. Three cover treatments together with four surface treatments were used at both sites. The cover treatments included a pure stand of grasses, a pure stand of legumes, and a mixture of both grasses and legumes. The surface treatments were imprinted, mulched, imprinted-mulched, and an untreated surface as a check. Surface imprintation was performed by a land imprinter at Oracle and by a hand imprinter at Campus. The imprinted surface significantly increased soil moisture retention, number of plants per unit area, plant height, plant cover, and biomass compared to the untreated surface. At the Oracle Center, the imprinted surface improved legume germination by 800% over the untreated surface, and by 367% over the mulched one. Corresponding percentages at Campus were 48 and 4% over the untreated and the mulched surfaces, respectively. Increases in biomass production achieved through surface imprintation were 102% over the untreated surface and 35% over the mulched surface at the Oracle Center. Corresponding increases at Campus were 63 and 33% over the untreated and the mulched surfaces, respectively. Plants grown on imprinted surfaces exhibited higher transpiration rates, lower diffusive resistance, and cooler leaf temperature compared to those grown on the untreated surfaces. Addition of mulch to the imprinted surface made no significant differences with respect to the parameters measured when compared to the imprinted surface without mulch. When mulch was used as a separate treatment, however, it significantly increased the parameters measured over the untreated surface. The effect of cover treatments on growth parameters and biomass production was masked by seasonality. Grasses tended to be superior over legumes in samples taken during the fall and the opposite was true during the summer. Mixing legumes with grasses, however, resulted in significantly taller grasses compared to grasses grown as a pure stand.

Temporal and spatial relationships of canopy spectral measurements

Ground-based, remotely sensed reflectance and temperature data were collected over differentially irrigated, developing cotton and sorghum canopies in order to investigate interrelations of these parameters; to monitor their temporal changes ; to understand their spatial structure ; and to estimate crop coefficient (KO from canopy reflectance. Spectral reflectance and derived vegetation indices showed ability to significantly discriminate among differential irrigation levels of sorghum canopies, starting the fourth week of growth. All vegetation indices increased as a result of crop development, with the perpendicular vegetation index (PVI ) demonstrating the greatest potential for assessing water stress conditions, whereas, soil indices behaved independently of crop development and water stress. Canopy temperature and derived water stress indices, on the other hand, were in high concordance and were able to detect crop water stress with variable degrees of sensitivity. Experimental variograms revealed that cotton reflectance and temperature were not spatially dependent when all water treatments were included. For the moisture stress treatments, only canopy temperature exhibited spatial dependence early in the period of stress. Sorghum canopy reflectance and temperature demonstrated some spatial structure; however, a drift was suspected due to regularity in the data spatial distribution. Normalized difference (ND), normalized perpendicular vegetation index (NPVI) and normalized green vegetation index (NGVI), for fifty days covering the period from planting to heading, were fitted with a complementary error function equation with minor adjustment. Both NPVI and NGVI displayed a 1:1 relation with interpolated tabular values of basal Kc, whereas ND deviated from the 1:1 relation for the period beyond 30 days after planting. The model was also found to be valid for estimating K(c) for moderately deficit irrigation conditions.

Managing Seasonality in Tourism : Challenges and Opportunities for the Tourism Industry in Húsavík, Iceland

Seasonality is a common phenomenon in the tourism industry around the world. Húsavík, a town on the northern coast of Iceland, has experienced tremendous growth in tourism in recent years and is sometimes recognised as the „Whale Watching Capital of Europe‟. However, Húsavík faces extreme seasonality with high demand mainly during the summer months and limited or no demand at other times of the year. As is emphasised in the tourism literature and widely in practice, seasonality is frequently seen as a problem for the tourism industry which has to be tackled. Academic research has never before been done on seasonality in Húsavík and the aim of this thesis is to understand the nature of seasonality within the tourism industry in Húsavík and discover potential ways to reduce seasonality in Húsavík tourism. In order to fulfil the aim, qualitative semi-structured interviews were undertaken with six tourism managers in Húsavík to investigate their perceptions of seasonality and if and how it could be managed. The results confirmed that the peripheral location of the destination stimulates seasonality and it poses major economic challenges for tourism businesses in Húsavík. Managers would prefer a longer tourism season. Several recommendations were provided for how to reduce seasonality such as develop other attractions than whale watching, improve accessibility, focus marketing on seasons outside the summer, and offer winter packages for foreign and domestic tourists.

Multi-level governance revisited : comparing the strategies of interest representation of legislative regions in EU environmental policy-making

Since the 1980s, regions have taken a strong interest in EU policy-making and increasingly demanded representation in the process. This has given rise to the concept of multi-level governance (MLG) in EU policy-making, which stipulates that subnational and supranational actors will interact and thus to some extent erode the authority of central governments. However, due to the scarcity of case study research looking at concrete instances of policy-making, a number of questions remain about the extent and the effectiveness of the interaction between regional governments and European actors. In addition, the extent and origins of differences in regional activity across regions and member states remain unclear. This thesis aims to contribute to the MLG debate by developing a theoretical framework with a set of hypotheses about regional activism in EU policy-making on the basis of rational choice institutionalist assumptions. It then investigates how seven legislative regions from four member states (the UK, Germany, Belgium and Austria) represent their interests in two concrete instances of EU policy-making and tests the core hypotheses against these fourteen cases. The thesis contributes to the MLG debate in three ways. Firstly, the principal objective of the thesis is to analyse the impact of different types of domestic intergovernmental relations on the strategies of regions at the European level. It is argued that the level and nature of a region's activity on the European level depends on the opportunities for influence in the domestic European policy-making process and the constraints that domestic rules place on European level activity. Secondly, a number of factors that could account for different levels of regional activity both within and between states are analysed. Domestic conflict and the capacity of a region are found to be particularly relevant for regional mobilisation. Finally, the thesis discusses the relative importance of domestic channels compared to European channels of regional interest representation, thus addressing one of the fundamental questions in the MLG literature. It is argued that unmediated interaction between European actors and regional governments is less common than predicted by the MLG literature, but that it can be effective, especially in cases where regions devise a comprehensive strategy of interest representation.

The Lifetimes of Phases in High-mass Star-forming Regions

High-mass stars form within star clusters from dense, molecular regions (DMRs), but is the process of cluster formation slow and hydrostatic or quick and dynamic? We link the physical properties of high-mass star-forming regions with their evolutionary stage in a systematic way, using Herschel and Spitzer data. In order to produce a robust estimate of the relative lifetimes of these regions, we compare the fraction of DMRs above a column density associated with high-mass star formation, N(H-2) > 0.4-2.5 x 10(22) cm(-2), in the "starless" (no signature of stars >= 10 M circle dot forming) and star-forming phases in a 2 degrees x 2(degrees) region of the Galactic Plane centered at l = 30 degrees. Of regions capable of forming high-mass stars on similar to 1 pc scales, the starless (or embedded beyond detection) phase occupies about 60%-70% of the DMR lifetime, and the star-forming phase occupies about 30%-40%. These relative lifetimes are robust over a wide range of thresholds. We outline a method by which relative lifetimes can be anchored to absolute lifetimes from large-scale surveys of methanol masers and UCHII regions. A simplistic application of this method estimates the absolute lifetime of the starless phase to be 0.2-1.7 Myr (about 0.6-4.1 fiducial cloud free-fall times) and the star-forming phase to be 0.1-0.7 Myr (about 0.4-2.4 free-fall times), but these are highly uncertain. This work uniquely investigates the star-forming nature of high column density gas pixel by pixel, and our results demonstrate that the majority of high column density gas is in a starless or embedded phase.

Therefore, information about future population size and structure obtained with the help of population forecasts, which can be used for a wide range of decision-making purposes, is of paramount importance. The primary aim of this dissertation is to produce three different types of population forecasts for Kazakhstan till 2030 and by comparing and analysing the differences to find out the most important factors determining the population development process in the country. Kazakhstan is a country with significant size and regional diversity which makes it relevant to consider those dimensions in population forecasting. Most southern oblasts of the country have a young population structure meaning that much of future population growth, particularly of working age, will come from these regions. Also, native population tends to concentrate in rural areas, while industrialized cities are mostly populated by non-natives with considerably different nuptiality and fertility behaviour. The atmosphere of the election campaign before the elections in October 2012 was not such fierce as during the last campaign. It was mainly due to absence of a major topic that would polarise the society, like the health fees in 2008. The ČSSD tried to find a similar controversial topic that might have been the church restitutions for a moment. The purpose of the negative campaign was to discourage people from voting the governmental parties ODS and TOP 09, but it also could weaken the KDU-ČSL that was and still is closely connected with churches, especially the catholic church. The representatives of the KDU-ČSL themselves didn't publish any opinions concerning this matter, with only few exceptions. The purpose of this thesis is to analyse and evaluate the media output of the KDU-ČSL during the election campaign that was run before the elections to the regional governments and the Senate. In the first part, the outline of the media strategy of the KDU-ČSL is introduced. The next part is devoted to a quantitative content analysis that compiles an overview of the regional media in the respective regions. Economic situation in the Central Europe is to a big extent influenced by the disparities between core regions (mostly the capitals) and the rest. If the gap between cores and peripheries is still widening, local governments of peripheral regions must come up with policies to protect their economies from the globalised world. This basic statement is examined in this work using two different methods: regionalised input-output analysis (for Czech regions) trying to discover structural differences between regions and its implications, and NEG equilibrium simulation method examining agglomeration forces in the Central Europe and evaluating possible outcomes of protective policies in terms of NTBs (limiting the openness). The results confirm the agglomeration tendencies and suggest mainly two ways of effective policies: regional specialisation and investments into infrastructure, which would lower the transaction costs within the peripheral regions.
