The consequence of running solo : How defecting from climate collaboration impacts the global temperature and damage to GDPDyvling, Olivia January 2022 (has links)
It is widely known that we can expect great damage to our world and economy because of climate change. It is human activities, and their emissions that has led us to where we are. IEA (2022) have declared that coal is the single largest source of carbon emission and scientists have stated that we need to phase-out the use of coal by 2050 to reach the Paris Agreement goal. At COP26 India chose to rephrase the climate agreement from “phase out the use of coal” to “phase down the use of coal” even though this goes against the recommendations made by scientists. This paper models the damage to GDP from climate change using a DGE model with two regions. One region is represented by India and the other is represented by the rest of the world. To predict the economic damages from using coal the model includes a climate variable. The thesis investigates four different scenarios: both regions collaborate; India defects while the rest of the world collaborates; the rest of the world defects while India collaborates; both regions defect. The results show that in 100 years the temperature will have risen to 3.27 degrees if the two regions choose to defect and the damage to GDP will be 1.55 percent. This is 0.21 degrees and 0.14 percentage points higher than when both regions collaborate. By using a game theory set-up, I find that it is always beneficial for India to defect. While for the rest of the world, it is better to collaborate in the long run to minimize their damages.

Public Procurement of Security Technology : A multiple case study of Swedish municipalities and regionsROLANDSSON, RASMUS January 2016 (has links)
Municipalities and regions in Sweden have an increasing need to purchase security technology to secure their properties and their operations. However this procurement process is strictly regulated by the Swedish procurement act (“Lagen om Offentlig Upphandling”, LoU), leading to a similar procurement process. However no academic studies have been done on the procurement of security technology in local authorities. This thesis explores and maps this process and the important aspects which affect how the process is carried out. This was done via a multiple case study, primarily involving interviews with experts from seven municipalities and six regions in Sweden. It analyses the public procurement from a process perspective from the initiation via the purchase to the follow-up and monitoring. Hence, the study is using a wider definition of the procurement process than most previous studies on public procurement. The aspects which affect this procurement process were also identified in this study. The results show that the procurement process has a cyclic nature, based on framework agreements in most of the studied case organizations. This cyclic nature gives both the planning and the follow-up central parts in a successful procurement process. The main identified aspects affecting the procurement process of security technology identified were: Supplier lock-in Procurement complexity The role LoU plays in the case organizationsOther themes related to main aspects presented above are also discussed in this thesis such as the suitability to implement SecaaS (Security as a Service) in the case organizations and the stakeholder dimension. The main conceptual contribution of this thesis is the usefulness of adapting a comprehensive process perspective when studying public procurement.

The Unsymmetric Two Impacts Per Cycle Steady State Motion of the Impact DamperMohammed, Mohammed 09 1900 (has links)

Steady state response of a single degree of freedom
system with impact damper, with the main emphasis of two
impacts (symmetric or unsymmetric)/cycle motion, and its
asymptotic stability criterion are derived analytically.
Stability regions are determined for wide range of parameters
of the impact damper by using digital computer.

Experimental study is also made to verify the
assumptions taken in the analytical solution and to obtain
general response of the system for wide range of parameters
of the impact damper.

As a result, it is found that unsymmetric two impacts
per cycle motion exists and is stable for a wide range of
parameters of the impact damper.

Also, it is found that three and four impacts/cycle
motions exist and are stable.

Stability boundaries are found to be a complicated
function of the impact damper parameters.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

Synoptic-scale differences in the characterization of high-shear low-CAPE tornado outbreaks in the United StatesMagness, Maximilian 06 August 2021 (has links)
High-Shear Low-CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) (HSLC) Tornado Outbreaks (TOs) are a specific subset of TOs that occur each year, primarily East of the Rocky Mountains. This study looks to define HSLC TOs with the use of quartiles of the most supported shear and CAPE measure, create a climatology of HSLC TOs, and to give a better description of the synoptic-scale patterns associated with HSLC TOs. Statistical analysis of quartiles and inner quartile range (IQR) were conducted to see which is the best measure. Ultimately, Mixed-layer CAPE (MLCAPE) and 0-3km shear were used due to past support and were used to define HSLC TOs. Bootstrapping was conducted, and compositing was created for each of the five regions. Bootstrapping between some regions showed statistical significance, and some of the composites matched up closely to what was seen in past HSLC research.

Bioprospection And By-Product Utilization Of Juniperus VirginianaGawde, Archana Jairam 02 May 2009 (has links)
Experiments were conducted to study variation in the amount of podophyllotoxin in J. virginiana across nine –physiographic regions of Mississippi. The aim was bioprospection of podophyllotoxin from J. virginiana across Mississippi. Experiments were also conducted to utilize biproducts (i.e. needles) as a source of podophyllotoxin and essential oil. Dual extraction of both from the same plant material was obtained in order to develop economic protocol for industrial utilization. Three different experiments were conducted for the bioprospection and byproduct utilization of J.virginana. Experiment I: Study of variation in the amount of podophyllotoxin across nine physiographic regions and the study of contributing factors for the variability. Experiment II: Explore different plant parts as source of podophyllotoxin Experiment III: Establish a dual extraction protocol for extraction of podophyllotoxin and essential oil from J. virginiana.
