Data Literacy: How Developing Best Practices for Higher Education in Communications Will Drive Innovation in Tomorrow's WorkplaceNaccarato, Alexa 23 September 2021 (has links)
Data literacy has become one of the most important competencies for a citizen to exercise in their personal and professional lives. It contributes to more informed decision-making in all aspects of life, and is more frequently being utilized in organizations to drive innovation and change. These skills are especially important for communications professionals, as interpreting and communicating data to various publics is the foundation of information sharing in virtually every industry and sector. Data competencies are typically acquired in post-secondary education; however, existing curricula are lacking robustness, adaptability, and transferability of skills needed in the workplace and in our ever-changing world. Through the results collected from both professors and practitioners in the communications field, this study identifies the gaps in existing curricula, and justifies the importance of communications students acquiring data literacy skills to ensure that they will be equipped for their careers and the world at large. This research highlights that improving data and research skills will better prepare citizens for their professional and personal lives.

Online Formative Assessments as Predictors of Student Academic SuccessCroteau, Jacqueline L. 01 January 2011 (has links)
Increasingly, educational reform efforts are turning towards data-driven decision making strategies to help teachers improve instruction through skills-based instruction/content that is both measurable and aligned to common rigorous standards, such as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Examining the impact of a formative online assessment system on a summative measurement of student achievement may provide evidence that data-driven instructional platforms can impact student achievement and learning outcomes. Guided by the theoretical frameworks of Vygotsky and Dewey, along with the concepts of multiple intelligence, constructivism, and mastery learning, this study examined the relationship between student scores from an online formative assessment administered quarterly and an end-of-year summative evaluation. A stepwise multiple regression analyzed the predictive power of the iReady formative assessment program towards archived SAT-10 reading and mathematics data among Grades 1-4 students, before and after the iReady program was implemented (N = 339). The results showed a significant relationship between the iReady program and SAT-10, explaining 11.6% of the variance in SAT-10 scores. The study's intended audience is educators, school districts, and policy makers who are using the achievement data produced by formative assessments to improve results on measures of academic achievement, leading to positive social change.

Vzdělávání a rozvoj pracovníků vybraných knihoven v Praze / Education and development of employees of selected libraries in PragueBartůňková, Monika January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on the employee education and development in selected Prague libraries. The aim of this diploma thesis is to identify the current state of further education of employees of selected libraries in Prague. Analyse approach of education and development of these workers in library facilities and their offers. Analyse how the offer of educational activities differs from the usual state and in times of crisis. Compare differences in the way employees are educated in selected libraries in Prague. Based on the findings of the survey, analyse the differences in the way employees are educated in selected libraries and suggest possible improvements and recommendations. The work is divided into theoretical and practical part. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the starting points of the topic such as education and training organizations, development and management of employees, employee training, strategic concept of employee education, strategic documents, human resources management, human resource management models, etc. The diploma thesis contains methodology for research. The practical part of the work analyses the objects of the survey, identifies areas of education and development of staff in selected libraries in Prague. It compares the differences in the way of...

Analýza managementu kvality vybrané organizace / Analysis of quality management in selected education organisationKolečková, Barbora January 2021 (has links)
The diploma thesis focuses on the area of quality management of a selected educational organization. The goal of the diploma thesis is to identify key areas of management of an educational organization and - based on an analysis of the current situation - to suggest possible improvements to ensure a long-term successful and competitive organization. The diploma thesis describes the starting points of the topic such as education, educational organizations, broader concept of management and its functions, application aspects of management, principles of quality management principles with specifics in education, approaches to setting systemic measures to increase quality in educational organizations, etc. The diploma thesis contains a methodology for research, outputs, proposals and recommendations to increase the quality of selected areas. In these areas are examined the processes affecting the success of the organization and the effectiveness of activities. The research is focused on three specific areas with processes that are most important for the sustainability of the organization. These are communications within marketing activities related to acquiring new clients, communication with existing clients and enrolling clients in courses - divided into these two target groups again. There is used a...

Reconfiguring academic identities : the experience of business facing academics in a UK universityRead, Mary January 2011 (has links)
The university sector at the beginning of the 21st Century is shifting in response to national and global changes in the role and purpose of Higher Education. Some universities, including the University of Hertfordshire, have chosen to focus attention on engagement with business and commerce. This practice based research examines the experience of academics in relation to the new challenges posed by this strategic development. There are three threads of investigation; interviews, examination of key concepts and the practitioner dimension. Drawing on a qualitative and constructivist approach, individual interviews with a range of business facing academics explore their experience of engaging with new activities. My perspective, as a manager of business facing academics, provides an important thread and situates the work firmly in the practice context. The implicit expectations arising from strategic positioning as a business facing university are examined. A conceptual framework is established with a focus on the nature of business facing activity, including its relationship with traditional forms of teaching and research, learning through work in the Higher Education setting and the idea of an enabling local context. The research found that amongst those undertaking business facing activity, academic identity is a fluid and multi-faceted construct reconfigured through experience and learning in the workplace; by its nature not easily defined, labelled or bounded. The challenge for universities is to nurture and sustain individuals in the creation and use of academic identities, in order to meet the undoubted challenges to come. This requires a forward looking, inclusive and innovative stance, resisting the temptation to judge current academic identities by the established notions of the past. Management of academics involved in business facing activity requires a more flexible, trusting and individual approach than is traditionally seen in universities.

Differences in how teachers make mathematical content available to learners over timeAndrews, Nicholas John January 2015 (has links)
The study was an investigation into the teaching decisions that mathematics teachers make over time. I view a mathematics classroom as a didactical system of teacher, learners and content within an educational institution, where content is the material that brings teachers and learners together. Within such a system I view the teacher's role as making content available to learners. Prior research has often investigated the teacher's role by comparing teaching practices nationally or internationally, but these comparisons have tended to use the lesson as the unit of analysis. I propose that how teachers make content available can change over the course of a series of lessons and so my study used the lesson series as the unit of analysis. I purposefully designed the study so that it involved four cases, which allowed me to explore the role of the teacher and the topic in how content was made available. To investigate how teachers made content available to learners in each case, I developed an analytical approach from which I could study the modes of teacher interaction that featured across the lesson series, the forms of mathematical content made available and the sequencing of these forms. Attending to forms of content - rather than content itself - allowed for comparison of teaching of different topics. This original analytical approach represents a contribution to both mathematics education and mixed methods research. Within this small sample of cases, quantifiable differences were identified in how content was made available between classwork and seatwork, from lesson to lesson and between cases. Between-case differences in the nature of teaching 'between-the-desks' during seatwork were also identified. These differences illuminated teaching decisions to which teachers and classroom researchers may not routinely attend. The findings therefore contribute - and identify additional lines of enquiry that might contribute further - to a more extensive understanding of teaching practices.
