Annotated bibliography of selected unaccompanied alto saxophone literature.

This document annotates 23 unaccompanied alto saxophone compositions, including original works and transcriptions. Selection of these pieces was based on the following criteria: (1) works which are commonly performed, (2) works by major composers, and (3) works which are important in terms of innovative performance techniques. Each annotation provides a synopsis of the composition, biographical information about the composer, pertinent information about the composition (dedication, duration, etc.), discussion about various performance considerations, a brief analysis, and concluding statements about the work including a qualitative assessment. Compositions annotated in the document include: Caprice en forme de valse by Paul Bonneau, Mai/ by Ryo Noda, Sonate by Jeanine Rueff, Suite Francais by Pierre Max Dubois, and the Unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 1 by J. S. Bach arr. Londeix, and arr. Ricker (both editions are discussed). At the conclusion of the document, a bibliography of approximately 300 unaccompanied compositions for the alto saxophone (including commonly performed transcriptions) is listed, providing the title, composer, and publisher (if available).

Music for the Saxophone Duet Genre: an Annotated Bibliography of Selected Original Music

In 1861, Jerôme Savari (1819-1870) composed Duo for Soprano Saxophone and Alto Saxophone. Since then, more than 400 duets were written, yet many musicians are not aware of this repertoire. The lack of recommended repertoire and insufficient information regarding this genre reduces the use of the saxophone duet in both pedagogical and concert settings. The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of the saxophone duet genre by identifying the standard repertoire and creating an annotated bibliography. Twenty-three composers with twenty-six selected works have been identified and will be annotated. All selected works in this document are (1) composed for any two members of the saxophone family; (2) originally composed for saxophone duet (i.e., no transcriptions will be included); (3) published either by companies or by the composers themselves; and, (4) composed between the nineteenth-century through present day. This annotated bibliography of selected repertoire contains two sections: (1) repertoire for performance; and, (2) repertoire for pedagogy. It is the intent of this project that the annotation for each piece could assist performers, teachers and students with their search of currently published works for this genre. The descriptive information in each annotation regarding the composition and its performance considerations should provide further details in order to assist in the program decision-making process.

Using Religious Themes and Content to Affect Cultural Sensitivity in Russian Language Learning

Specifically oriented towards Russian culture, this study addresses the need in diplomacy for deeper cultural understanding. As research suggests a link between the inclusion of religious perspectives in second language acquisition (SLA) and student motivation and cultural empathy, this study examines how Russian language classrooms could leverage an understanding of Russian religious themes to foster cultural sensitivity. The study invited 24 second-year university students of Russian to complete a previously-validated assessment of cultural sensitivity: the Global Perspectives Inventory (GPI). Divided into a control and a treatment group, the participants also watched a short video depicting a story from Russian history on the interactive video platform, Ayamel. The control group viewed a set of 10 extra-textual annotations containing Russian cultural material highlighting secular themes from Russian culture, while the treatment group reviewed 10 that were more spiritually-themed. After viewing the respective annotations, participants completed a short, open-ended, Video Response Questionnaire (VRQ), and completed a GPI post-test. The findings from the VRQ suggested that the video intervention tended to challenge participants' previous perceptions of Russia, noted a general increase in positive, self-reported perspectives of Russian culture, and revealed a tendency in the treatment group to more often portray Russia as a multi-faceted, rather than monolithic, cultural entity. The comparison of the GPI pre-test and post-test scores revealed an inverse interaction between the collective scores of the control and treatment groups on two questions gauging affective responses to culture. For each of these questions on the post-test, the treatment group's collective score slightly increased and the control group's collective score slightly fell.The findings suggest that interaction with religious themes in SLA may promote feelings of commonality and empathy with a foreign culture. As the relative, religious homogeneity of the sample constitutes a threat to the external validity of this study, the researchers invite similar tests to be conducted in SLA among different population types.

La quantité croissante de données traitées par les logiciels rend légitime le besoin de garanties de confidentialité. La propriété de non-interférence assure qu'un programme ne fuite pas de données privées vers une sortie publique. Nous proposons une méthode pour construire, une multisémantique annotée capable de capturer la propriété de non-interférence pour aider à prouver formellement des analyseurs. Nous fournissons un théorème prouvé indiquant que les annotations capturent correctement la non-interférence. Le théorème de correction permet de prouver un analyseur sans s'appuyer sur la définition de non-interférence mais sur les annotations. / Because of the increasing quantity of data processed by software, the need for privacy guarantees is legitimate. The property of non-interference ensures that a program does not leak private data to a public output. We propose a framework to build an annotated multisemantics able to capture the non-interference property to help formally prove analysers. The framework comes with a proved theorem stating that the annotations correctly capture non-interference. The correctness theorem allows to prove an analyser without relying on the definition of non-interference but on the annotations.

Esta dissertação consiste em uma tradução das sátiras de Pérsio (34-62 d.C.), acompanhada de notas e precedida de estudo preambular, que discute a questão da obscuridade do texto e seu valor literário. Dentre os poetas satíricos latinos canônicos (Lucílio, Horácio e Juvenal), Pérsio parece ter sido relegado a uma posição de menor prestígio. Investigar os motivos determinantes do generalizado juízo negativo acerca da obra de Pérsio foi, por isso, um dos objetivos desta pesquisa. Ainda que, de início, o contato com o texto denunciasse já os elementos condicionantes da situação de inferioridade em que a crítica pôs o autor, nosso contínuo e reiterado trabalho com as sátiras foi aos poucos revelando as qualidades literárias que a propalada obscuridade encobria, de modo a propor uma reavaliação da obra de Pérsio no quadro da sátira latina. A primeira parte desta pesquisa está dividida em quatro capítulos, em que se abordam: a vida e obra de Pérsio; os argumentos de cada sátira; o juízo da crítica sobre a obscuridade; a questão do valor literário dos poemas. A segunda parte apresenta a tradução comentada das sátiras, em que se procurou praticar uma forma vernácula tanto quanto possível fiel e exata ao texto latino, conservando-se as mesmas imagens de Pérsio, mesmo quando o original pudesse vir marcado por sua tão censurada obscuridade. / This dissertation consists basically of a translation of Persius\' (34-62 A.D.) satires, accompanied by notes and preceded by a preliminary study, which aims to discuss the issue of the text obscurity and its literary value. Amongst the canonical Latin satirical poets (Lucilius, Horace and Juvenal), Persius seems to have been relegated to a less prestigious position. One of the present research goals is, therefore, to investigate the determinant reasons for the widespread negative opinions about Persius\' work. Although our first contact with Persius\' texts had already announced the conditioning elements of the author\'s situation of inferiority, our continuous and repeated work with his satires could gradually disclose literary virtues that were hidden by the poet\'s reputed obscurity, making it possible to propose a re-evaluation of Persius\' work in the context of the Latin literary genre of satire. The first part of this research is divided into four chapters, which deal with the following subjects: the life and work of Persius; the plot of each satire; the standard criticism\'s beliefs about the poet\'s obscurity; the question of the literary value of the poems. The second part presents an annotated translation, which has sought to be as exact and faithful to the Latin text as possible, by maintaining the same images as those created by Persius, even when the original text was marked by its so reproached obscurity.
