A hypermedia and project-based approach to music, sound and media art

Koutsomichalis, Marinos G. January 2015 (has links)
This thesis describes my artistic practice as essentially project-based, site-responsive and hypermediating. Hypermediacy—i.e. the tendency of certain media or objects to keep their various constituents separate from their structure—is to be understood as opaque, juxtaposed and after a recurring contiguity with different kinds of interfaces. Accordingly, and within the context of the various projects that constitute this thesis, it is demonstrated how, in response to the particular places I work and to the various people I collaborate with, different kinds of materials and methodologies are incorporated in broader hybrids that are mediated (interfaced) in miscellaneous ways to this way result in original works of art. Materials and methodologies are shown to be intertwined and interdependent with each other as well as with the different ways in which they are interfaced, which accounts for an explicitly projectbased, rather than artwork-based, approach which, on its turn, de-emphasises the finished artefact in favour of process, performance, research and exploration. Projects are, then, shown to be explicitly site- or situation- responsive, as they are not implementations of preexistent ideas, but rather emerge as my original response to the particular sites, materials, people and the various other constituents that are involved in their very production. Interfaces to such hybrids as well as their very material and methodological elements are also shown to be hyper-mediated. It is finally argued that such an approach essentially accelerates multi-perspectivalism in that a project may spawn a number of diverse, typically medium-specific and/or site-specific, artworks that all exemplify different qualities which are congenital to the particular nature of each project.

A nobreza do avesso: uma tradução brasileira de \'II Mattino\' , de Giuseppe Parini / The reverse of the nobility: a Brazilian translation of Il Mattino, by Giuseppe Parini

Szylit, Diana 06 April 2017 (has links)
Although the Milanese poet Giuseppe Parini (1729-1799) plays a prominent role in the history of Italian literature of the eighteenth century, he is not studied in Brazil, not even within the academic community focused on Italian studies. His narrative poem Il Giorno is considered one of the most important works of the Italian Settecento: it presents a harsh criticism to the nobility of the eighteenth century by means of a satire that seeks to oppose itself to the sentimental Arctic poetry, very much in vogue at the time. Parinis poem was an inspiration for great Italian writers that are studied nowadays, in Brazil as well as abroad, such as Leopardi, Manzoni and Ugo Foscolo. Original, classic and modern at the same time, Il Giorno deserves to be included in the literature studies of the Brazilian academic community, and, therefore, needs an annotated version in Brazilian Portuguese. We understand that its absence in the field of Italian studies in Brazil is dewed mainly to the difficulty of its comprehension, full of Latinisms and stylistic literary devices, and we believe that an annotated translation of at least one part of Il Giorno is a way to encourage teachers, researchers and students to get in touch with this great writer and, thereby, make him known in our academic community. Therefore, we present an annotated translation of Il Mattino, the first part of Il Giorno. It is a foreignization translation, with all the archaisms and refinements of the Italian poem, considering that those archaisms and refinements, when countering the subject narrated in the work the superficial and irrelevant day-to-day of a young member of the Italian aristocracy of the eighteenth century , are fundamental to the formation of the poem as a satiric work.

Apresentação de uma tradução comentada da Introdução e da Primeira Parte de Introduction à l\'étude de la médecine expérimentale de Claude Bernard: do projeto à realização / Proposal of an annotated translation of the Introduction and First Part of Introduction à l\'étude de la médecine expérimentale by Claude Bernard: from project to realization

Janczur, Christine 30 September 2015 (has links)
In this study, we present a translation with commentary (or annotated translation), from French to Portuguese, covering a section of a classic work of scientific importance. The author chosen was the French physician and scientist Claude Bernard, who published dozens of books about his practice as a professor of physiology at the College de France in Paris between 1843 and 1879. Upon consideration of a large number of works by this author and with the experts` advice in the fields of Philosophy and History of Science, the book chosen for this work was Introduction à l\'étude de la médecine expérimentale (1865). The book that is our corpus consists of an Introduction, followed by three parts: The Experimental Reasoning; Experimentation in Living Beings; Applications of the Experimental Method in the Study of the Phenomena of Life. The proposed work includes the translation of the Introduction and First Part of the book, adding several notes of different types, related both to scientific content and to translation issues. Our choice of translation for the development of this proposal was to take the reader into the original text or to its author, consisting of a translation procedure denominated foreignizing (Venuti, 1995). Therefore, we focused on the author`s writing style and terminology, emphasizing the scientific issues in the context of the nineteenth century, compared to the twenty-first century.

An Annotated Bibliography of Selected Repertoire for Alto Saxophone and Piano for Developing College-Level Alto Saxophonists, with an Analysis of Yvon Bourrel's Sonate Pour Alto Saxophone Et Piano

Kallestad, Scott D. 12 1900 (has links)
In this study the author addresses the problem of finding quality repertoire for young college-level saxophonists. By examining graded repertoire lists from a variety of college and university saxophone instructors, the author has compiled a list of 180 works for alto saxophone and piano. Twenty-four well-known works of a difficulty-level appropriate for freshman and sophomore players are identified and annotated. Each annotation consists of bibliographical information, a biographical sketch of the composer, a difficulty rating of eight elements of performance, a discussion of performance considerations, and a bibliography of available recordings. The eight elements of performance included in the difficulty rating are: Meter, key signatures, tempo, note-values, rhythm, articulation, range, and dynamic levels. Each of these facets is graded using a six-point difficulty scale. One work from the select list, Yvon Bourrel's Sonate Pour Saxophone Alto et Piano, has been analyzed in greater detail with regard to thematic material and key areas to provide in-depth information that, hopefully, will help the student gain a deeper understanding of that work and as a result perform the piece with greater artistry.

Joseph Holbrooke: A Study of the Published and Unpublished Solo and Chamber Works for Clarinet with an Annotated Bibliography

Webb, Joseph Dee 05 1900 (has links)
The name Joseph Holbrooke is, for the most part, unknown today, but that was not the case in the early years of the 20th century. Conductors such as Sir Thomas Beecham and Henry Wood performed his works throughout England, and his opera, The Children of Don, was performed in Vienna and Salzburg. However, his popularity did not last, and the performances of his works began to decline sharply after 1925. By the last quarter of the 20th century, performances of his works were very rare, even in England, and most, if not all, were out of print. As reason for this decline, some have cited the long duration and large instrumentation required by some his works, while others have said the neglect is well deserved, but the critical pendulum now seems to be swinging in the other direction. Many of his pieces have come back into print and new recordings are being released. This is especially good news for clarinetists because of the quality and number of his works for that instrument. His compositions for clarinet include chamber and solo works, and a double concerto for clarinet and bassoon. These melodic and intriguing works for the clarinet deserve more investigation and exposure. This document provides an annotated bibliography of all of Holbrooke's solo and chamber works involving the clarinet. Each entry lists title, publisher, date of composition/publication, duration, commercially available recordings, and provides a brief description. In addition, a biographical sketch is provided along with an overview of his compositional style.

DACS-DB: An Annotation and Dissemination Model for Disease Associated Cytokine SNPs

Bhushan, Sushant 19 October 2011 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Cytokines mediate crucial functions in innate and adaptive immunity. They play valuable roles in immune cell growth and lineage specification, and are associated with various disease pathologies. A large number of low, medium and high throughput studies have implicated association of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in cytokine genes with diseases. A preponderance of such experiments have not shown any causality of an identified SNP to the associated disease. Instead, they have identified statistically significant SNP-disease associations; hence, it is likely that some of these cytokine gene variants may directly or indirectly cause the disease phenotype(s). To fill this knowledge gap and derive study parameters for cytokine SNP-disease causality relationships, we have designed and developed the Disease Associated Cytokine SNP Database (DACS-DB). DACS-DB has data on 456 cytokine genes, approximately 61,000 SNPs, and 891 SNP-associated diseases. In DACS-DB, among other attributes, we present functional annotation, and heterozygosity allele frequency for the SNPs, and literature-validated SNP association for diseases. Users of the DB can run queries such as the ones to find disease-associated SNPs in a cytokine gene, and all the SNPs involved in a disease. We have developed a web front end (available at http://www.iupui.edu/~cytosnp) to disseminate this information for immunologists, biomedical researchers, and other interested biological researchers. Since there is no such comprehensive collection of disease associated cytokine SNPs, this DB will be vital to understanding the role of cytokine SNPs as markers in disease, and, more importantly, in causality to disease thus helping to identify drug targets for common inflammatory diseases. Due to the presence of rich annotations, the DACS-DB can be a good source for building a tool for the prediction of the "disease association potential (DAP)" of a given SNP. In a preliminary effort to devise such a methodology for DAP prediction, we have applied a support vector machine (SVM) to classify SNPs. Employing the SNP attributes of function class, heterozygosity value, and heterozygosity standard error, 864 SNPs were classified into two classes, "disease" and "non-disease". The SVM returned a classification of these SNPs into the disease and non-disease classes with an accuracy of 74%. By modifying various SNP and disease attributes in the training data sets, such a predictive algorithm can be extrapolated to identify potential disease associated SNPs among newly sequenced cytokine variations. In the long run, this approach can provide a means for future gene variation based therapeutic regimens.
