From the inside out / Från insidan ut

Barenghi, Anna January 2018 (has links)
I began my thesis with compact living as my starting point. I researched the way we live in cities today and learnt that 57% of Stockholm’s inhabitants live in a two bedroom and kitchen apartment or smaller. My aim is to create furniture modules that can enhance small apartments. I created three modules that incorporate all essential items of furniture; these modules can be adapted for any apartment. In order to show how the modules can be used I picked a small site in central Stockholm and allowed the house to be shaped by the apartments, the apartments are in turn shaped by the furniture.

Ephemeral Reality – Future Dwellings in the Light of Spatial Manipulation and Simulation

Dierks, Niklas January 2020 (has links)
Triggered by advanced technologies, physical structures are becoming increasingly efficient and vanish from the experienced space. Eventually, the main task of architects will shift to shaping and manipulating the atmosphere that is surrounding the dissolving physical reality of architecture. Any clear separation between interior and exterior starts to blur as every biological and metaphysical experience can be simulated in any given environment. A phenomenon accelerated by efficient communication technologies, merging the analog and digital space. Not only profane architecture will be affected, but also the very intimate setting of our living habitats. The proposal of a prototypical future dwelling explores the potential to both implement spatial simulations and to manipulate cultural rituals in our living environments. By communicating through the medium of post-processed pencil drawings, the project dares to predict the future relation of serving and served spaces to our body and mind.

Kulturhuset SILO

Ihrfors, Veronica January 2022 (has links)
This project focuses on making a “Folkets hus”, a form of community centre available for its surrounding inhabitants to express their identities and experience different cultures, these buildings usually contain libraries, theatre, restaurants, art centre, educational spaces, a child section and more. The city chosen for this project was Arboga, a small old industrial town from the 13th century a few miles west about Eskilstuna. Approximately 14,100 inhabitants, of which 11,400 live in the city. Arboga has identified that the after school-centre and culture school needs to be expanded and renovated, due to a higher demand. There is also a demand for more houses and living space adapted for the elderly. I picked an old abandoned silo industry building next to a very old beautiful park to work on. The building has not been standing for more than 50 years and is already abandoned. I saw an opportunity to urbanise the building and give locals the chance to use its height to see their city from above. My project called  “SILO” is a six floor community centre and a ten floor high apartment building. The community centre contains: restaurants, library, dance rooms, theatre room, music and radio room, art room, after school-centre, art gallery, lecture room, rooftop with a garden, an office floor and lots of spaces focusing on creative activities for all ages. The apartment building to the east contains eighteen 1 room apartments and eighteen 3 room apartments. Cirka 14 100 invånare därav 11 400 bor I staden. Hyreshuset i öster innehåller arton anpassade 1:or och arton loft 3:or.

DAYLIGHT as an architectural and atmospheric quality in Swedish domestic housing

Larsson, Emma January 2020 (has links)
In the real experience of a space, light and space are inseparable. Light describes the space, it’s shape and structure, as well as the space and its material tells about the nature of light. As described in Christian Norberg-Schulz’s work on housing, it is the architecture that makes the residence something more than the satisfaction of a practical need. According to Peter Zumthor, there is an interplay between sensory experiences, imagination and memory to create a certain atmosphere, and that we can quickly determine if the experienced atmosphere is something we like or not. But what exactly is this atmosphere?  The aim of this thesis is to investigate what soul and atmosphere in domestic Swedish housing is consisting of, and if it can be measured or concretized. Based on previous literature research a study with two apartments from different periods of time were carried out. Observations, calculations, as well as questionnaires were made to try and find a connection between the comprehensible and the immeasurable, the atmosphere in a space.

A structural system for multi-story construction in prestressed-precast concrete

Alvarado, Eduardo E. January 1962 (has links)
It is the major purpose of this thesis to examine, through a practical engineering problem, the different aspects affecting the development of the structural concept. For this purpose, a prestressed-precast concrete structural system for multi-story construction is developed. After the introductory sections, the development of the structural system is explained in the third section. The section includes an analysis of the system, as well as a description of the individual component of the structure and their interaction. The analysis provides a corroboration of the adequacy of the concepts of the system. Illustration aid in the explanation of the problems involved. / Master of Science

Stepping Back to Move Forward : A Poem Written in Light and Brick

Jo, Hyung 11 August 2020 (has links)
Louis Kahn, the master of modern architecture, said, "Even a brick wants to be something " the phrase explained how important it is to respect the properties and materials, each material has a structure or form that can be the most beautiful to express its essence. The reason that he taught the essence of materials by using "brick" as an example among numerous materials the characteristics of bricks are very simple and clear. The essence of the brick lies in 'stacking'. The stone and metal panels which can be found as common as bricks, the surface forms are smooth, but it held by various types of material. The surface materials require separate devices to overcome gravity instead of forming a large surface at a time. Architecture is the site where human technology overcomes the providence of nature. However, brick is not 'attached' material, its 'stacked' material. A piece of brick is placed and laid on, depending on gravity. The nature of bricks goes hand in hand with the history of mankind and is loved a lot. "Architecture is a poem written in light and brick," and brick can be a material that makes use of the essence of architecture: practicality and art. In fact, that the most common building around us is a brick building is evidence that the brick is imprinted with familiar and reliable materials for everyone. Moreover, the bricks are an inexpensive and fast-producing material. In this thesis, I 'd like to propose the housing for elderly residents on the Robinson North Terminal at the Potomac waterfront in Alexandria Virginia. Also I tried to understand and study the material properties of bricks, and to realize mix-used architecture that can conform to Alexandra's unique order and maximize the potential of only sites / Master of Architecture / Aging and Elderly As medical technology develops and demography changes, the demand for more resources. In addition, as the elderly population grows, total support costs (infant and elderly population / productive population) continue to increase. In the past 30 years, the United States has grown at an age-old population five times faster than France and the United Kingdom, twice as many as Germany. Older people's participation in economic activities and their support are emerging as important topics. Older retirees can be good mentors for young adults based on their skills and business operations experience. Economic activity of older people can also reduce conflict among generations. In fact, startups / entrepreneurs accounted for more than 50s over 20-30s. As consumers, people in their 50s have a great presence. Not only do they account for more than 50% of the total US consumption, but consumer dispositions also vary. Likewise, the elderly can be a great help in revitalizing the economy if they are consumers with high demand and maximize their potential as producers. Abandoned land of Alexandria waterfront Robinson terminal North Robinson Terminal North was built in the early 1730's west's point. It was an important marine settlement in the 18th century for marine ships. This site, which is now threadbare, has a lot of historical importance and has a great potential. Robinson Terminal North, which is owned by the Washington Post, is halved by Union Street and currently made up warehouses, a nearly 40,000 square foot pier, and the terminates of a rail line. Redevelopment of the site has been planned for scores of years. In keeping up with the goals of this Plan to encourage public access and delight of the waterfront, land uses in the renewal Robinson Terminal North should be active and productive place.

a building within a building

Hunt, Andrew Ryan 25 May 2005 (has links)
It is my proposal that unused building shells of the past serve as cocoons for the future, providing the precedence from which grows "a building within a building". The tension created between old and new encourages a didactic relationship between building and city, cognizant of the past while looking towards the future. / Master of Architecture

Rosslyn Waterfront Complex: Bridge the City and the River Architecturally

Wang, Manting 16 February 2018 (has links)
I consider that either walking along the riverbank or floating down the river by boat and enjoying the journey by interacting with nature is a fundamental human right. Wandering in the concrete jungle, humming while beatboxing, dancing, and skateboarding can also be great pleasures. However, as cities increasingly cover over nature with urban constructions, highways, for instance, they deprive people's right to access the river by erecting a barrier between city and nature. Citizens are the reason that cities exist. So many vivid social activities happen in the concrete jungle every day. Yet, out urban lifestyles belittle nature as it is obscured by the city. It would be much more beautiful, inspiring, and healthy if we can find ways to develop cities in harmony with nature, allowing citizens to bring our urban textures to the ever-flowing river. In my thesis, I explore the possibilities of bringing the city and the river, architecturally. / Master of Architecture / I consider that either walking along the riverbank or floating down the river by boat and enjoying the journey by interacting with nature is a fundamental human right.
