The work of archives in the age of audio reproduction: archival theory and recorded sound

Cuthbert, David 14 April 2016 (has links)
This thesis examines the implications for archival theory of sound recording as a documentary medium. Over the last three decades, archivists have devoted considerable energy to exploring the challenges associated with records in media other than ink and paper. Yet, while the theoretical and methodological problems fostered by digital and photographic records have been subject to vigourous debate, comparatively little attention has been devoted to audio records. When archival sound recordings are discussed, the focus is almost exclusively on the formidable task of preserving the sonic signals captured in degraded or obsolete formats. Preserving and enhancing the accessibility of audio records remains an indispensable endeavour, but this thesis argues that other long neglected aspects of archival activity with sound recording now require much greater attention. Sound recordings are welcome additions to the documentary heritage and transactional evidence preserved by archives, but they are seldom viewed as anything more than adjuncts to the archival enterprise as a whole. The medium-specific value of audio-based records—as opposed to whatever content they may contain—is rarely articulated beyond an affirmation of the powerful allure of listening to noises, music or voices brought forward from the past. Occasionally, these endorsements are supplemented by appeals to sound’s ability to convey the immediacy of a particular moment or to trigger involuntary sense-memories. In recent years, a wide-ranging body of scholarship has established sound as a focus for historical and interdisciplinary investigation. Audio records undoubtedly amplify the range of documented experience, but this thesis argues that archivists must resist the association of sound with simply a more immediate or “immersive” record of the past. The provenance of sound recordings must be carefully situated in relation not only to the technical means by which they were recorded, stored, and preserved, but also according to the shifting conventions, institutions, expectations, and assumptions that have guided the intended purpose, creation, and prior circulation of such recordings. / May 2016

Reconnecting mind and matter: materiality in archival theory and practice

Rekrut, Alicia (Ala) 29 July 2009 (has links)
This thesis considers the assumptions and beliefs of the archival profession to reconceptualize how materiality is related to contextuality, and thereby reveal the “mind” within their material (or immaterial) form and reconnect records’ materiality with their archival value. Although materiality has received little critical consideration within the archival profession, the thesis proposes that the materiality of archival records is evidence of their contexts of creation and use through time, and that this idea, therefore, complements the postmodern contextualist turn in recent archival theory. An examination of how the materiality of records is treated in common archival practices reveals gaps between recent archival theory and current archival practice. The thesis concludes with suggestions for adjustments to archival practice to bring it into alignment with the goal of preserving those aspects of records which contribute to their archival value, and reconnecting mind with matter.

However, new form of document production and new information technologies introduced to the discipline by the end of the twentieth century and beginning of the twenty-first century have led the archivists to rethink the archival concepts and principles that were stated by these old manuals. In this sense, in the last 30 years Canada has been fertile ground to the discussions that surround the discipline in contemporaneity and the Canadian Archival Science has played a very important role regarding the needs presented by the new forms of document production to the archivists, rediscovering principles and (re) defining concepts, methods and criteria to the creation, maintenance and use of traditional and electronic records. It was especially by the 80’s that a new paradigm was enunciated in the area, and from it, three approaches have emerged: Integrated Archival Science, enunciated by the Québec current; Functional Archival Science or Postmodern Archival Science, enunciated by Terry Cook and; Contemporary Diplomatics, first enunciated in Italy by Paola Carucci and developed and reformulated in North America by Luciana Duranti. Nevertheless there isn’t in the archival literature a systematization of these approaches contribution to the constitution of Contemporary Archival Science. In this way, the present work identifies the role of these approaches to the epistemological construction of Archival Science, especially what is the role of Québec current, Terry Cook and Luciana Duranti in this context. In such a way, an exploratory, theoretical and documental study was carried out about the Archival Science history... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Conceiving local archival institutions: a study of the development of archival programs in Richmond and Delta, British Columbia

Chong, Bernice W. 11 1900 (has links)
This essay tries to determine how two municipal archival programs develop from their origins as collections of historical documents in museums, and whether they fit into the larger pattern of archival development found in Canadian federal and provincial public archives, which is identified as "total archives". To provide some context for the two case studies, the essay first examines the main features of the Canadian tradition of "total archives" and tries to locate Canadian archives in the context of the worldwide evolution of modern archival institutions. The essay then explores the development of municipal archival programs in Delta and Richmond, British Columbia to reveal how they were conceived, advanced and sustained. The study concludes that local archival programs do fit into the Canadian tradition of "total archives", however, a conceptual framework which includes both the cultural and administrative purposes of archival institutions appears to be lacking. The conclusion summarizes some of the aspects of a conceptual framework including: the nature of archives, the legal status of public records and the need for archival legislation, the administrative role of an archival program, the need for a commitment of adequate resources, and the need for local governments to recognize their duty to preserve and make accessible public records of continuing value.
