nuSense : Wearable technology to prototype and create new sensesJansson, Daniel January 2015 (has links)
nuSense is the result of a degree work on master level at Umeå Institute of Design exploring why wearable technology oftentimes tread a rather narrow path, with many different companies releasing essentially the same product with a new shell, and innovation being slow. Through research, interviews and user research, hardware prototyping and testing it became clear that developing for wearable technology is a very complicated task, for many reasons. Being able to build quick exploratory prototypes was nigh impossible if you do not have a grasp of hardware developing platforms and programming. Further, those outside the industry who just want to explore wearable technology lack a platform to do so easily, aside from buying ready-made solutions made to do one single prepackaged thing. Based on this a concept was developed to provide a platform to explore wearable technology, through modular building-blocks and an easy to grasp interface.

Bottender : DrinkblandarmaskinLenfors, Camilla, Sjögren, Mattias January 2015 (has links)
This report describes the development of a drink mixing machine and the developmentof an application to control it. The aim of the project is to see whether a cheaper andmore modular product can be produced than similar products currently on the market. The goal was to develop a working prototype, and based on it decide whether a productcan be produced with a material cost of less than 5000 SEK.We wanted to make a drink mixing machine which diers from similar products in thesense that it must be cheap enough to be attractive to both companies and individuals. It shall also distinguish itself by being modular, ie, not sit together using a large frame. This because it provides a greater opportunity to adapt to small areas. You can alsohang it on the wall to save as much space as possible. An application is designed to function as a user interface to the machine. The applicationcan run on Android and PC, but can only communicate wirelessly from a PC. Everythingin the applikation is compatible with Android, except for the communication. It was found that some form of database needed, and a local database was chosen becauseit does not need Internet access. The prototype is complete to the extent that the application can specify the drink to bemade, and a carriage then moves to the right position for the right amount of time. Thevalves have due to lack of time not been implemented, and is therefor simulated withLEDs.Conclusions from this work is that it is possible to make a product under the component-kost of 5000 SEK. Rapid prototyping framework for automation applications based on IO-LinkChavez, Victor, Cruz Castañon, Victor Fernando, Ruchay, Marco, Wollert, Jörg 27 January 2022 (has links)
The development of protype applications with sensors and actuators in the automation industry requires tools that are independent of manufacturer, and are flexible enough to be modified or extended for any specific requirements. Currently, developing prototypes with industrial sensors and actuators is not straightforward. First of all, the exchange of information depends on the industrial protocol that these devices have. Second, a specific configuration and installation is done based on the hardware that is used, such as automation controllers or industrial gateways. This means that the development for a specific industrial protocol, highly depends on the hardware and the software that vendors provide. In this work we propose a rapid-prototyping framework based on Arduino to solve this problem. For this project we have focused to work with the IO-Link protocol. The framework consists of an Arduino shield that acts as the physical layer, and a software that implements the IO-Link Master protocol. The main advantage of such framework is that an application with industrial devices can be rapid-prototyped with ease as its vendor independent, open-source and can be ported easily to other Arduino compatible boards. In comparison, a typical approach requires proprietary hardware, is not easy to port to another system and is closed-source.

Dot Master : Braille printerArdestam, Fredrika, Soltaniah, Sara January 2018 (has links)
Braille is a writing system that uses tactile dots in apredetermined order which, in relation to each other, representdifferent letters in the alphabet. This writing systemmakes it possible for people with visual impairmentsto take part of the written media. But the availability ofhome based braille printers is limited and these printers areoften expensive. The purpose of this project is to investigateif it is possible to build a home based braille printerfor a low cost using microcontrollers, and thereby making itmore accessible to people with visual impairment. In orderto achieve this, a prototype was built using an microcontrollertogether with stepper motors and a solenoid. Thesecomponents were then controlled by code through user inputand translated to required movements. Each switchcase then calls a set of functions that activates the steppersand the solenoid in the order needed to get the desiredcharacter. In the time frame given, the project resulted ina prototype able to print out the input it was given. Asfor the cost of building your own Braille printer in comparisonto buying one on the market highly depends on whatprocessing machines are accessible.
Information about stream - aquifer interaction is increasly recognized as key to understand process related to surface water avalability, groundwater contamination and its influence on the fauna and flora of hyporeic enviroments. The perception of the importance of this interaction has attracted the focus of several researchers to the theme. Thereby, this work had as objective to analyze the interaction between a river and an aquifer by using both a mass balance and an evaluation of the temperature gradient between the water of the aquifer and the river. Three gaugings stations, installed along the main stream of an upland watershed called Ribeirão da Onça, provided the streamflow data used in this work. To assist in this monitoring, an alternative datalogger was installed, using the Arduino platform, equipped with an ultrasonic distance sensor. Temperature information from the creek base, as a physical tracer, was also used in the intermediaty catchement area, through a thermometer and 4 thermocouples distributed in depths every 10 cm of the river ground. The ultrassonic sensor presented a relative error of 3.5 %, compared to the pressure transducer used. The best fit for the quadratic formulation of Boussinesq indicated that coeficient recession (α) was less for the sub-basin 3 and bigger for subbasin 2. In addition, the mean recession coefficient for the areas was 0.00388 day-1, the mean saturated thickness of the saturated layer, obtained by the quadratic formulation of Boussinesq was 51 m and the mean transmissivity of the basin was equal to 131 m2.day-1. The base contribution to the sub-basins 2 and 3 were bigger than sub-basin 1 showing bigger recharge rates in the sub-basins 2 and 3. The surface and linear contribution of the baseflow to the sub-basin 2 was on average 850 mm/d and 4 m3/m.d, respectively. Comparison of the water temperature of the aquifer 30 cm below the base of the creek with the temperature of the creek base showed an average gradient of 2 °C and also showed that the contribution of the aquifer to the creek is not uniform, with some points where the creek possibly contributes to the aquifer. The intergrated analysis of the hydrographs obtained through a flow balance in the stream and of the temperature gradient have proved to be feasible alternatives for the study of the stream aquifer interaction.

Simulação, controle e automação de um forno tipo túnel utilizando tecnologia embarcada / Simulation, control and automation of a conveyor belt tunel oven with embedded technologyAtzingen, Gustavo Voltani von 22 March 2017 (has links)
Based on the dramatic evolution of electronic devices in the last 35 years and the recent advent of low cost computational hardware, embedded sensors have become a cost-effective solution for real time machine monitoring and simulation. The objective of this thesis is to present both software and hardware intended for the real-time simulation and control of a conveyor belt tunnel oven using low cost embedded hardware, to ensure high quality food production. For this purpose, mathematical modelling and simulation of the temperature profile inside the oven was performed in order to supply the control system with the calculated temperature of the food in real time, using only the fixed sensors inside the oven. This simulation information is passed to the PID controller, ensuring that the desired temperature profile for heating the food is achieved, improving the quality of the final product. The system has two units, a slave that is located on the main body consisting of an Arduino mini and the instrumentation for controlling the sensors and actuators. The second unit is the master unit, which utilises a Raspberry pi to host the control software, the graphical user interface the PID controller and manages the Bluetooth connection with the slave unit. Experiments were performed in order to test and validate the thermal profile simulation of the oven and the food, as well as to test the PID controller. It was concluded that it is possible to control a prototype scale industrial oven using real time simulation with a low-cost computation unit.
