Monteiro Lobato nas páginas do jornal : um estudo dos artigos publicados em O Estado de S. Paulo (1913-1923) /Valente, Thiago Alves. January 2009 (has links)
For data collection, it was researched all editions between 1913 and 1930, a period when the printing press was established in Brazil (Sodré, 1966; Bahia, 1954). Our main objective is the Monteiro Lobato's relation with OESP, searching for the identification between the writer's articles and the speech of one of the main vehicle of the Old Republic printing press. The articles were researched between 1913 - when the very first Lobato's article was published on OESP - and 1930 - a very important date for the history of the country and, therefore, for all the printing press - is organized in other analysis focus: a ) approaching of the theme and formal questions about Lobato's published articles; b) the participation of the writer during the OESP activities; c) the conception of newspaper and society to news and writers. The reading of the texts and the analysis carried out for both Lobato studies and Brazilian History of the printing press show the proximity of Lobato and OESP, at least during the new established and so poor Republic dealing about a society project for Brazilian people. The OESP is the place where Lobato's ideas dialogue deeply with other texts and writers, all impregnated with an objective of, through the science and the economical development, becoming Brazil the American power... Permanent worker, temporary resident: media representations of Canada's Live-in Caregiver ProgramGilliland, Julia Sarah Jane 30 August 2012 (has links)
The Live-in Caregiver Program is a temporary foreign worker program that allows workers to come to Canada in order to labour as private caregivers for children, the elderly, and disabled individuals. This program allows caregivers to apply for permanent residency after the successful completion of 24 months of full time work. There are a number of scholars, advocacy groups, former caregivers, and other parties that have raised concerns about certain regulations of this program. For example, caregivers under this program have an employer-specific work permit, must live in the homes of the employers, and have no external monitoring of their work environments. Subsequently, the Live-in Caregiver Program has been seen as problematic because of the high number of abusive labour situations. This thesis is dedicated to an analysis of how the Canadian news print media represents the Live-in Caregiver Program. Although there has been much research done on migrant care work within Canada, and around the world, there are few studies on how the news media construct arguments that describe these transnational labour flows. The main topics that guided the research questions for this thesis were: temporary foreign worker programs; citizenship status; globalized, gendered, and racial stereotypes; the live-in regulation; employer specific work permits, and power relations in the labour relationship. This research was not geared to proving or disproving the main findings of key migrant domestic worker literature, rather it was focused on how these conclusions are interpreted, transferred and argued within a publically accessible format, Canadian news print media. This analysis revealed how journalists within Canadian news media construct important cultural narratives to persuade audiences to either reject the LCP as exploitative and problematic, or embrace it as economically beneficial. / Graduate

The use of articles in inner and outer circle varieties of English: a comparative corpus-based studyWahid, Ridwan, Languages & Linguistics, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
Articles continue to be one of the most puzzling aspects of English grammar. This thesis investigates article use variation in two groups of English varieties: Inner Circle and Outer Circle. The first group, comprising British English, American English, Australian English and New Zealand English, represents English varieties in their traditional contexts. The second group, consisting of Singapore English, Indian English, Philippine English and Kenyan English, represents varieties which are deeply entrenched in their communities due to colonial roots. The study is premised on the naturalness of corpus data. Three corpus-based analyses were conducted to investigate articles and their frequency, collocation and usage types. The frequency analysis revealed that articles are idiosyncratically used by the varieties with no clear divide between the two groups. Text types, on the other hand, emerged as a more powerful determinant of the observed frequencies. It was found that fewer articles were used in spoken language. In the collocational analysis, the varieties were found to favour different complementation patterns for two-word and multiple-world clusters. The Inner Circle varieties, however, shared more complementation patterns among them, demonstrating greater stability in terms of variation. Finally the analysis of usage types discovered marked or untypical patterns of use in the Outer Circle groups structural and situational definites. A number of untypical usages of first-mention/quantitative 'a/an' were also found in this group. In the same analysis, a case study of house uncovered a few marked uses of ??, which signalled the null form but not the zero article. Although the collective findings in this study indicate that article use in both groups of varieties has more similarities than differences, the latter leave more impression on observers. These differences can be attributed to such diverse factors as text types, socio-cultural content of collocates, specificity, recategorisation of countness, indiscriminate rule application and ungrammaticality. Theoretically, however, the variation can be captured by the application of Chestermans three composite meanings of definiteness locatability, inclusiveness and extensivity and their permutations. As an instance of nativisation, article use in the Outer Circle is limited in its diffusion. The observed innovations rarely creep into more formal registers.

Vetenskapliga tidningsartiklar i klassrummet : En undersökning om lärares användning av tidningsartiklar / Science news in the classroom : An investigation about teachers use of newspaper articlesBråmer, Pontus January 2007 (has links)
<p>This paper presents why and how teachers use newspaper articles in the classroom when they educate their pupils in chemistry, biology and nature science. All the teachers have worked over 20 years and are, when interviewed, at a Swedish gymnasium in Dalarna. I also have, in a small study, interviewed some of their pupils to get their view about teachers using news paper articles during lessons.</p><p>The teacher’s use of newspaper articles in the classroom can be divided in different ways. They can use the articles to illustrate up to date links to everyday life. Some teachers’ uses articles by letting the pupils read the articles and answer questions about them. Or the newspaper articles can function as background material when the pupils do a project work covering a number of lessons. The major part of the teachers thinks that the main reason why they use articles from newspapers is to get up to date information concerning the course that are covered.</p><p>The results show that the teachers in Dalarna use their newspaper articles in the same way as shown in international studies. For example they used the newspaper articles to start a lesson or a new topic. Or they used the article to have an example on the subject they teach. But a number of differences can also be observed between this study and other international ones, for example the main reason why the articles are presented to the pupils and how the articles are used over time.</p>

Conference Proceedings or Journal Articles: a case study of publications of Canadian computer scientistsZhang, Li 15 October 2014 (has links)
Conference proceedings are an important venue for publishing original research and often final research in computer science. They represent a large body of the literature in this field, and are generally considered as important, if not more, as journal articles. However, the quality or impact of conference proceedings has been controversial. This research tries to compare the impact of conference proceedings with that of journal articles, studying publications of Canadian computer scientists. Specifically, the following questions will be addressed: what is the percentage of conference proceedings in the computer science literature? What are the trends of publishing in this field? And more important, are there differences between proceedings and journal articles in terms of their structure and impact?
Methods: 30 faculty members in the computer science departments, schools, or equivalent from 15 Canadian research universities were randomly selected. Scopus database was searched to identify publications by each of the 30 faculty. The structure of the two types of publications (conference proceedings and journal articles) and their impact were studied.
Implications: The research findings will provide a better understanding of scholarly communication in computer science field. The results will:
enable research evaluators to make informed decision when assessing the publications of computer scientists; h
elp computer scientists to decide where to publish their research in order to achieve greater impact, and to select what document types to read from an increasing number of papers; help computer science librarians in collection development and in information literacy program delivery. / A presentation at C-EBLIP Fall Symposium, October 15, 2014, University of Saskatchewan.

Artistic and Religious Aspects of Nosatsu (Senjafuda)Steinmetz, Mayumi Takanashi 06 1900 (has links)
195 pages / Nosatsu is both a graphic art object and a religious object.
Until very recently, scholars have ignored nosatsu because of its
associations with superstition and low-class, uneducated hobbyists.
Recently, however, a new interest in nosatsu has revived because of
its connections to ukiyo-e. Early in its history, nosatsu was regarded
as a means of showing devotion toward the bodhisattva Kannon. However,
during the Edo period, producing artistic nosatsu was emphasized more
than religious devotion. There was a revival of interest in nosatsu
during the Meiji and Taisho periods, and its current popularity
suggests a national Japanese nostalgia toward traditional Japan.
Using the religious, anthropological, and art historical perspectives,
this theses will examine nosatsu and the practices associated with it,
discuss reasons for the changes from period to period, and explore the
heritage and the changing values of the Japanese common people.
