In the asphalt pavement sector, the emission of greenhouse gases to atmosphere is mainly due to high temperatures of mixing and compaction. The Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology is an alternative process of manufacturing the asphalt mixtures. This technology provides reduction of the high temperatures of mixing and compaction and provide sustainable benefits in short, medium and long term to social, economic and environmental advantages. This research aims to study the physical and mechanical properties of asphalt mixtures with modified binder by the addition of sunflower oil. Sunflower oil, additive used in this research, was adopted because it is among the four most consumed oleaginous plants worldwide. Sunflower oil accounting for the equivalent of 8.74% of the total consumption of vegetable oils in food and industrial uses. The sunflower oil was added to the asphaltic binder in the contents of 1, 2 and 3%. In order to evaluate the physical properties of the asphalt binder with and without the additive, the physical tests of penetration, softening point and the Fourier Transformed Infra Red (FTIR) test were performed before and after the Rolling Thin-Film Oven (RTFO) in addition to the rheological test of rotational viscosity. For the mechanical characterization of asphalt mixtures dosed by SUperior PERforming Asphalt PAVEments (SUPERPAVE), the following tests were performed: Flow Number, Modified Lottman, Resilience Modulus, Tensile Strength and Fatigue Life. The results indicated technical feasibility of sunflower oil incorporation to the asphalt binder. Sunflower oil provided advantages as reducing the mixing and compacting temperatures up to 6ºC. However, this reduction does not allow classify modified binder as a typical WMA. However, mixtures produced with modified binder provided a greater increase in lubricity and resistance to moisture damage, contributing to tackiness and cohesion of the asphalt mixture and still provided an increase in fatigue strength. The specimens molded with the addition of 2% of the additive had satisfactory mechanical and volumetric properties in relation to the criteria recommended by the adopted standards.

SMA asphalt surface course for high performance on heavy traffic roads.

Rafael Marcal Martins de Reis 25 April 2002 (has links)
This research presents laboratory test results of mixture design, mechanical behavior of SMA (Stone Matrix Asphalt), as well as some construction aspects regarding to development of Brazilian road trial section as a new bituminous surface course to pavement construction or maintenance. The laboratory results show that SMA can perform very well in hot climate under heavy load conditions due to the mixture to be very resistant against permanent deformation but still flexible like dense asphalt concrete. The SMA is a well Known solution for heavy traffic in Europe and, more recently, in North America. The SMA is also employed to increase the adherence in wet conditions and for noise reduction.

The effect of modification asphalt binder with a phenolic rein: cardanol-formaldehyde.

Josà Roberto Moreira de Andrade 11 February 2013 (has links)
CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / The asphalt from petroleum refineries, when presents proper consistency to pavement, is denominated asphaltic binder or petroleum asphaltic cement (PAC). The petroleum asphaltic binders are materials constituted by complex mixtures of high-molecular-weight hydrocarbons. Their main components are carbon, hydrogen, but also contain other elements like oxygen, sulphur and some metals. They are obtained from the natural evaporation of deposits located on the earth surface (natural asphalt), or by distillation in industrial units specially designed for this. The asphaltic binders produced by petroleum refining resist satisfactorily in most situations to which pavements are submitted. Nevertheless, over the past years, the highways with a high volume of traffic have had to support an increasing daily average of vehicles, heavier trucks, and also increases in axle weight and in tire pressure. These roads require, thus, asphaltic coatings with better performance and more modern constructive techniques. In view of this, this research has as its goal to study the effects resulting from the modification of the petroleum asphaltic cement (PAC) by the addiction of a resin of the type phenol-formaldehyde â obtained from cardanol â to analysis of the feasibility of this additive in asphalts. Through this study, it was found that the additive enabled an increase in the module (G*) and a lowering of the phase angle (δ) that resulted in a better performance of the asphaltic binder in terms of permanent deformation if compared to the pure PAC. It was also observed a reduction of approximately 12ÂC in the temperature of compaction and machining of the mixture in relation to the pure binder, what makes possible the use of the resin as additive in asphaltic binders.

This paper presents laboratorial research results comprising developing project of polymer mixtures in petroleum asphalt cement. The asphalt is an excellent binding material used in the highway constructions and unban roads, however the increase of the commercial vehicles number and the load transported by axle have led to the premature pavements failure. The laboratory outcomes obtained show that the SBS polymer, which is embedded to the asphalt, brings improvement in the physico - chemical properties and performance mainly for its good performance under heavy loads in hot climates becoming resistant to the permanent deformation, but maintaining the flexibility as the asphaltic concrete providing elasticity. The SBS polymer is a good solution, although it increases the initial costs of the product, however with a great costeffective regarding the maintenance of the highways or unban roads over the years / Mestrado / Ciencia e Tecnologia de Materiais / Mestre em Engenharia Química

Sandra Oda 08 December 2000 (has links)
This work presents the results of a study about the technical feasibility of the use of asphalt-rubber binder by the asphalt paving industry. In Brazil, more than 30 million tires a year are disposed, mostly in inadequate sites, causing serious health and environmental problems. The effects of the main factors (rubber content, rubber particle size, temperature of mixture, reaction time) on the behavior of asphalt-rubber binders are evaluated by traditional tests and also by tests of the Superpave Method, which are based on fundamental properties, directly related to field performance. The results of the statistical analysis of the factorial design of laboratory experiments show the most significant effect of rubber content and, mainly, that asphalt-rubber binder can increase the resistance to permanent deformation and fatigue cracking.

Caracterização à fadiga de ligantes asfálticos modificados envelhecidos a curto e longo prazo / Fatigue characterization of short-term and long-term aged modified asphalt binders.

Javier Yesid Mahecha Nuñez 23 August 2013 (has links)
One alternative to improve fatigue characteristics of asphalt mixtures is the use of modified asphalt binders; however, there is no doubt that the stiffening caused by the addition of modifiers can influence the fatigue resistance of asphalt mixture. In order to measure characteristics of asphalt binders that are related to the fatigue cracking of asphalt mixture, some laboratory tests have been recently developed such as the time sweep and the linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test. The objective of this study is to characterize the fatigue behavior of 12 modified asphalt binders with the same high-temperature performance grade (PG 76-xx). The formulations AC+PPA, AC+SBS, AC+SBS+PPA, AC+Rubber, AC+Rubber+PPA, AC+PE, AC+PE+PPA, AC+EVA, AC+EVA+PPA, AC+SBR, AC+SBR+PPA and AC+Elvaloy+PPA were prepared with a 50/70 base asphalt binder graded as PG 64-xx in the Superpave specification. Based on the characterization made in this study, the main conclusions are the following: (a) the material that showed better fatigue life was the AC+EVA; (b) the material that is less sensitive to deformation was the neat AC; (c) the less sensitive one to temperature was the AC+PPA; (d) the effect of PPA in asphalt binders prepared with other additives caused a reduction in the fatigue life for many formulations, an increase in the sensitivity levels of deformation for all formulations, a reduction in the sensitivity to temperature and an increase in the sensitivity to aging for several formulations; (e) on the final ranking of the characteristics of asphalt binders according to the parameters analyzed in this research study, the AC+Rubber showed the best overall performance

Efeito da adição de ácido polifosfórico em ligantes asfálticos de diferentes fontes / Effect of polyphosphoric acid on asphalt binders from different crude sources

Pamplona, Thais Ferreira 25 March 2013 (has links)
Additives have been incorporated to asphalt binder in order to improve the performance of pavements. The stiffening of asphalt binders induced by additives should increases the rut resistance of asphalt concrete, unclear how PPA affects the resistance to fatigue and thermal cracking of asphalt binders. One of the most promising new products for asphalt binders modification is the polyphosphoric acid (PPA). However, the mechanism of PPA modification depends strongly on the chemical composition of the base asphalt binder. To evaluate the impact of the PPA modification in asphalt binders from different sources, two asphalt binders 50/70 penetration grade (REDUC and LUBNOR) from different crude source with different performance grades and chemical composition have been modified by four proportions of PPA (0.5, 1 0, 1.5, 2.0%). Saturated aromatics, resins and asphaltenes (SARA) fractions of neat and modified asphalt binders were determined using the thin-layer chromatography. To evaluate the effect of PPA addition on the rheological properties of asphalt binders it was analyzed the viscosity, the performance grade, the stiffness, the elasticity, the elastic recovery, the non-recoverable compliance and the crack length at failure. The viscosity of asphalt binders and the mixing and compaction temperature increased with increasing levels of PPA. The high temperature of PG increased in different magnitude with the ratio of PPA, depending on the base asphalt binder. The addition of PPA increases the stifiness, the elasticity and the elastic recovery and decrease the non-recoverable compliance of asphalt binders. With regard to the fatigue tolerance, the addition of PPA and the thermo-oxidative aging induced an increase in the fatigue tolerance of asphalt binders. The presented results show the importance of the chemical composition of the base asphalt binder on the extent of modification caused by the addition of PPA. It is recommended to use low levels of PPA to modify the LUBNOR (to 1%) and high levels of PPA to modify the REDUC (over 1.0%).

Identifikace tekutin rychlostního typu vhodných k modelování geomateriálů / Identification of rate type fluids suitable for modeling geomaterials

Tůma, Karel January 2014 (has links)
In the present thesis we study and compare different viscoelastic rate-type fluid models capable of describing response of geomaterials such as asphalt. Using new thermodynamic approach proposed by Rajagopal and Srinivasa (2000) we derive several classes of non-linear viscoelastic models that generalize standard Oldroyd-B and Burgers models. We show that the new models achieve better results in fitting experimental data with asphalt than the previously considered models (Oldroyd-B, Burgers, Rajagopal and Srinivasa (2000)). In particular they are able to capture the behavior of asphalt observed recently in experiments (torque overshoot and two relaxation mechanisms), which is not possible to describe by the other models. Using both the standard and the newly derived models we compute full simulations of viscoelastic flow with the finite element method in fixed domains and incorporating the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian description also in deforming domains. For example, we study rolling of asphalt or creation of ruts in the road with the real material parameters obtained by fitting the experiments. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
