Factors Associated with Teacher Preparedness and Career Satisfaction in First Year Teachers

Buth, Kevin Ross January 2020 (has links)
The objective of this study is to determine the potential association between teaching state, subject taught, perceived preparation given by teacher preparedness programs, and perceived support from administration and colleagues, and overall happiness of teachers and their satisfaction with the university education program they attended. We use generalized Fisher’s exact tests, two-sample t-tests, linear regression, logistic regression to accomplish this objective. State and subject have very little effect on teacher satisfaction. Teacher support systems are associated with both the way a teacher perceives they were prepared, as well as the satisfaction they experience in their career. How well a teacher feels they were is also associated with teacher satisfaction.

Landbird Response to Fine-Scale Habitat Characteristics Within Riparian Forests of the Central California Coast

Melcer, Ronald E., Jr. 01 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Riparian corridors in California are known to be an important but reduced and degraded resource for landbirds. In spite of previous research, the habitat characteristics that correlate with high landbird abundance remain poorly understood. In particular, the scale at which predictive models are useful (fine scale, watershed, sub-region or region) is ill defined. Herein, point count-based abundance indices for 8 riparian associated/obligate species with uniform and high detection probabilities are correlated with biotic and abiotic habitat variables: a sums of squares procedure is used to select the top 5 predictive variables for each species, best fit linear models are selected in an information theoretic framework, and the relative importance of individual variables assessed. These analyses identified site and vegetation characteristics that could serve as targets for restoration and conservation efforts within this coastal central California region. The specific characteristics vary somewhat across the 8 species I surveyed. In addition, the characteristics that I have found important as predictors are distinct from analyses that others have conducted. Therefore, just as we should probably accept regional variation in the composition of riparian avifaunas, we should also probably expect regional variation in the relationship between habitat variables and avian abundance. It appears that important habitat characteristics vary at the fine, watershed, sub-region and regional scales thus reducing the generality of all of the currently available models.

Genetic Associations of Alzheimer’s Disease and Mild Cognitive Impairment

Hebert, Scott 09 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Over 6 million people are estimated to have been living with Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in 2020, with another 12 million living with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Research has been conducted to evaluate genetic links to AD, but more research is needed on the subject. The Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) has been conducting a longitudinal study of AD and MCI since 2004 and offering their data to research teams around the world. Diagnostic and demographic data was collected from participants, as well as data regarding single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). SNP data was transformed to a binary format regarding whether the SNP contained the alternative allele for that particular SNP. We performed cross-validation to determine the ideal alpha and lambda values to use in elastic net regularization, which called for LASSO regression, in order to perform feature selection on the SNPs and other predictors, which were systolic and diastolic blood pressure, age, gender, years of education, race, marital status, and handedness. The LASSO regression reduced the number of SNPs from 55,106 to 13 and removed all non-SNP predictors except years of education and marital status. We used simple logistic regression to assess the relationship between variations in the significant SNPs (as well as years of education and marital status) and diagnosis of AD/MCI, utilizing a separate LASSO regression with conditional selective inference to more accurately calculate the significance of the variables. The adjusted odds ratios for the SNPs are 1.59 (95% CI 1.23, 2.05), 2.37 (95% CI 1.81, 3.12), 0.71 (95% CI 0.54, 0.93), 1.59 (95% CI 1.21, 2.09), 0.55 (95% CI 0.38, 0.79), 2.03 (95% CI 1.27, 3.23), 0.31 (95% CI 0.18, 0.50), 0.43 (95% CI 0.30, 0.60), 0.69 (95% CI 0.53, 0.89), 1.95 (95% CI 1.46, 2.60), 1.89 (95% CI 1.22, 2.90), 1.47 (95% CI 1.13, 1.90), and 0.52 (95% CI 0.37, 0.72) for SNPs rs11086694, rs2075650, rs2094277, rs2261682, rs31887, rs4745514, rs4816158, rs4826619, rs6640551, rs6809370, rs7312407, rs919751, and rs9857853, respectively. The SNPs are located in genes that have clinical significance and may be associated with various diseases that affect cognitive performance. The results propose that the alternative alleles for seven SNPs are associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s Disease/Mild Cognitive Impairment diagnosis while six SNPs are associated with a decreased risk of diagnosis. This research may have clinical implications and should be further studied.
