PDA Training of Faculty Physicians

Wallace, Rick L. 01 December 2007 (has links)
The PDA is an important technology in clinical medicine. Although PDAs are widely utilized by medical students and residents, older teaching faculty have not readily adopted them. The medical library can position itself as a leader in training patrons to use these devices. The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Quillen College of Medicine Library (QCOML) staff trained older, experienced teaching faculty to use PDAs loaded with ePocrates and InfoRetriever databases. The training was rated highly and several faculty members became PDA users. The library is now considered the place to go on campus for PDA help.

Community College Governing Boards Effects of Structure and Composition on Student and Institutional Outcomes

Camp, Jason Lee 03 May 2019 (has links)
This dissertation examined if community college governing board structure and trustee selection influence institutional and student outcomes. This study employed a causal-comparative design and one-way between subjects ANOVA to examine the effects of board structure and trustee selection on the average cost of attendance, graduation rate, and salary after attending. The participants were 894 public community colleges in the United States. The independent variables included board structure (local boards versus statewide boards) and board composition (elected boards versus appointed boards). The independent variable data were collected from a report, Public Community College Governing Boards: Structure and Composition, compiled by the Association of Community College Trustees. The 3 dependent variables (i.e., average cost of attendance, graduation rate, and salary after attending) was collected from pre-existing publicly available data from the United States Department of Education College Scorecard. The research indicated that a locally governed board does result in a lower cost of attendance. The results also signaled that community college boards with elected boards of trustees have a lower cost of attendance and a higher salary after attending.

An assessment of the Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit program at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham, Alabama

Hobbs, Phillip M 03 May 2008 (has links)
This study explores the relationship of student participation in Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit and the need of advanced training beyond secondary levels. It examines the demand and need for high school students to participate in collegiate level work while still attending high school. In addition, the study explores instructional site location and articulation of degree progression, as well as other available concurrent enrollment programs. It focuses on administrative support along with the interest of involved stakeholders. This study uses descriptive and inferential statistics for each hypothesis and research question to analysis the Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit program at Jefferson State Community College. Means, standard deviations, ANOVA’s, contingency tables, and chi-squared goodness of fit test are used to measure the effects of taking courses while still attending high school. Research question and null hypothesis one examination of data is to query if a difference exists in race, gender, and estimated family income based on choice of program participation. The results show that there are significant differences in the dependant variables, participation in the two programs, based on two of the independent variables race and estimated family income. Research questions and null hypotheses two and three were designed to investigate if instructor assignment bias and instructional location had a relation to grade distribution. The main purpose of this study was to statistically analyze the different group’s means. Statistically, the dependant variables, grade point averages were found to be comparable between instructional locations but not comparable as a result to instructor assignment. Research questions four and five analyze student and faculty perceptions of experiences in the Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit program over a four year period. Student’s overall perceptions of their experiences in Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit for this specific study were very positive. This study shows that most inquiries have more than an eighty percent strongly agree/agree satisfaction rating from students and faculty who participated over the four-year studied co-hort Educational Institutions can benefit from this study by examining the end result of a collaborative partnership and have additional tools to make the appropriate decision to create, continue or suspend these types of programs.

Self-Determination Towards Regular Exercise Relates to Quality of Life in Female College Students With at Least One Child

Roylance, Toby Khung ChiLai 12 June 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Inspired by one of my daughters, Rachel Tam, and her journeys through motherhood while pursuing an MBA at Brigham Young University, this study was conceived from observing her struggle to balance academic responsibilities, motherhood, being a wife, and prenatal care. Her experience highlighted the significance of self-directed physical activity (PA) for young mothers pursuing higher education in a religious institution. This study explores the dynamics of PA, motivation, and well-being among 264 college-attending mothers from Brigham Young University Provo and BYU-Pathway Worldwide. These participants were selected from an online survey pool of over 1,500 female student respondents. All mothers in the study have at least one biological child living with them at least half of the time and provided insights through 36 tailored questions. The research is grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT). It utilized the Godin Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire (GSLTPAQ) to assess activity levels, the Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire-2 (BREQ-2) for motivational regulation, and the World Health Organization Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5) to measure well-being. The vast majority of participants--over 98% affiliated with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (The Church), predominantly married freshmen or graduate students, about 75% in their twenties and thirties with young children under 6--demonstrate a notable dedication to physical activity (PA). This dedication surpasses both the average engagement levels of general college female students nationwide and the U.S. PA guidelines. This robust commitment is largely driven by a modest level of intrinsic motivation, potentially correlated with adherence to BYU's health code, the Word of Wisdom, and personal beliefs. Despite facing challenges in balancing academic responsibilities and parenting duties, over 61% of these mothers maintain moderate overall well-being. The motivation analysis reveals an SDT simplex pattern, indicating a significant, positive, but low correlation between intrinsic motivation and enhanced life quality through active PA participation. This suggests that various unique group factors may be associated with the expected SDT relationship between PA, intrinsic motivation, and well-being.

Descrição e compreensão dos processos de perdas e luta vivenciados por uma pessoa com Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica / Describing and understanding the losses and mourning processes experienced by a person with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Salgueiro, Juliana Peixoto 13 November 2008 (has links)
The general objective from this work is to describe and analyze the mourning and progressive losses processes experienced by an elder person with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), provided that such person was aware of these losses. Starting from a case study, a qualitative research has been conducted focused on phenomenological aspects. Data from home psychotherapy sessions reports were used, and the participant has consented this usage in a free and informed way. Through this material, a selection process has separated the reports in which the loss theme has been mentioned as a consequence of the disease. These reports have formed four meaning units: Movements, Speech, Safety and Independence, characterized by the most significant losses experienced by the participant during the diseases evolutionary process. The first two units are directly related to the disease, as they are listed as ALS characteristics. Safety and independence issues are experienced by most of the people affected by the disease. Regarding the experience described in this work, its possible to list the family support, the main caretaker, the religion and the home attention as the main factors which may help the person to ease the sufferings caused by ALS. Regarding the psychologist aid, the most important aspect is to seek alternative resources for the patient to help him/her to deal with successive losses, considering the specific idiosyncrasies and needs. The approximation and the emotional connection between the professional and the patient, as well as the respect to the patients values and life story, are vital factors to obtain these resources. Besides, the psychologist shall offer help and support to the family members who are also subject to getting sick. They may also need professional care. Besides the personal psychotherapy, for this attention experience to be successful regarding the student, the professional and specially the patients and their families, the following aspects are vital: studies about death and losses, the supervisions on specific cases, the sharing of experiences and the knowledge about the physical and emotional aspects connected to the disease.

Carla Sousa Braga 10 August 2012 (has links)
This study aimed to investigate how hypermedia features used in semi attending distance education may be related to the learning process of the students of the graduation in Letras InglÃs of the Universidade Aberta do Brasil. For this, it was done a bibliographic study that understood the elements that characterize the hypermedia resources and a new theoretical proposal for learning in the digital age, developed by George Siemens, which is called Connectivism. It was concluded by a historical review in the instructional materials and resources used for teaching of a second language. Concerning to the methodology, it was taken with the qualitative study of ethnographic feature and it was counted with the voluntary participation of thirteen students of both sexes enrolled in the course selected and tied to the poles. During the fieldwork, semi-structured interviews were conducted and navigations in the didactic materials of the specific disciplines of the course, as the focus was to observe how the hypermedia resources were available and used by the students. The results showed that the students visualize the strong and the weak points of the didactic materials that they used during the course. Moreover, they also realized what are the purposes and functions of the hypermedia resources available and made suggestions to improve them. However, factors such as skill level, time and necessity may be decisive during their study practices. Finally, it is possible to reach the following conclusions concerning to the hypermedia didactic materials: first, the reason for them to be constructed from the combination of different languages and media and they also foment a non-linear navigation, which enable the students through their needs and style to assume a role of co-author of his or her material and to define which paths will be included / excluded during the study. Second, the hypermedia resources that were analyzed help to the learning when it brings real life contexts to the content which allows associations between prior knowledge and new information and providing practical applications of topics. And third, by incorporating elements that are available in cyberspace, which benefit in the development of the networks of the students learning and adding new nodes. For the education, this can be useful for making known the views of the students about resources and how this relates to the ways of use of the didactic materials during the study and learning.

Mokinių nenoro lankyti mokyklą priežastys ir jų šalinimas / Reluctance of students to attend school and removal

Grikštaitė, Aušra 27 August 2009 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / General education programs of Lithuania state, that all general education is oriented to children, young people, their needs and abilities. Therefore, the goal of modern school is to help a person to develop the maximum power of individual creativity and capacity to meet the needs of his or her innate needs such as self - expression, freedom, love, respect, creativity, trim and harmony. However, in modern society, the standing of schools is decreasing, school attendance is falling and the learning motivation has a negative tendency as well. To answer these questions, the author examines one of the most urgent problems - students' reluctance to attend school. Reluctance of students to attend school is the loss not only in the education system, but also in general context of Lithuania as a state. The accounting and the return of the education system of students under the age of 16 who do not attend school in Lithuania has already been in solving process for some time. The school attendance problem s well as the attitude of students towards school and learning has always been under consideration. The reasons why students avoid going to school have been relevant since the origination of science. Nowadays it has become a social problem in Lithuania and abroad because the family as an essential institution for ensuring the safety weakened morally and economically. Parents became indifferent to children‘s success and progress at school. Lack of motivation, stiff school curriculum... [to full text]

Perspective from Two Professions: Two professionals Making Meaning of the Clinical Educator Role

Payor, Tara 24 August 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe how professional educators make sense of their role in helping novice practitioners make meaning from authentic clinical practice. Simultaneously studying a clinical educator from teacher and graduate medical education, and subsequently setting their stories side by side, speaks to the interest both professions have in learning from the other. Both clinical educators were Board certified in their respective area of practice. In-depth phenomenological interviewing was used as the study’s methodology, and the professional formation construct served as the study’s conceptual framework. Data corroborate findings in the literature that there is a lack of consensus about what the clinical educator role entails. Participants showed alignment with the professional formation conceptual framework and demonstrated that the clinical educator role is multifaceted, complex, and made up of more than discrete functions. Their capacity to support professional formation comes from their ownership of a special mix of cognitive and behavioral processes, professional knowledge, and personal attributes. Given both professions’ interest in and ongoing efforts to improve clinical education, the study can help both continue their work toward understanding the clinical educator role and ensuring that people selected for the role are chosen through thoughtful methods and provided with clinical-educator-specific professional development throughout the professional lifespan.
