Globalisering, makt och kön

This study focuses on expats, professionals and specialists from English-speaking countries who were sent by their employers to work abroad in Switzerland. They together with their families, were asked to move to a foreign country and start new lives. Although the relocation does bring a change in career and in most cases, a better personal economic situation, it also brings with it, big life changes. The most obvious changes are associated with separation from their ancestral homes and families, and the need for the establishment of new ones. The central point of this study is the question of what helps to create these new homes and what is involved in this sphere. The fieldwork, which was defined by cohabitation with the families, consisted of observation and analysis to determine the social and material practices through which expatriate families relate to their homes - and how it was narratively reflected. Some major points of observation included the universal need for the families to have with them, objects of a material nature that linked their new home to the original and contemporary home, and a tendency to establish social ties with other expats as a substitution of the family support network. Au-pair Aufenthalte haben in Europa schon eine lange Tradition und werden nach wie vor gern als Möglichkeit genutzt, um eine längere Zeit im Ausland zu verbringen und im engen Kontakt mit der Gastfamilie Sprache und Kultur des Gastlandes kennen zu lernen. Die Autorin geht davon aus, dass solche nicht zuletzt auch interkulturellen Erfahrungen Spuren im Leben und in den Lebensentwürfen der jungen Erwachsenen hinterlassen. Über die subjektive Bedeutung dieser Erfahrung sowie deren Auswirkung ist bisher nur wenig bekannt, daher widmet sich die vorliegende Untersuchung von autobiographischen Erzählungen und Weblogs der Rekonstruktion eben solcher subjektiven Erfahrungen, Deutungen sowie den Lebens­ent­würfen ehemaliger Au-pairs. Der qualitative Charakter der Arbeit zeigt sich unter anderem darin, dass die Analyse eng an dem subjektiven Selbst- und Weltverständnis der Befragten anknüpft. Ausgehend von den Motiven und Intentionen und damit der Ergründung des Entscheidungsprozesses für den Au-pair Aufenthalt werden das Leben im Ausland, die Rückkehr und Wiedereingliederung sowie die Bedeutung des Auslandsaufenthaltes betrachtet. Der Auslandsaufenthalt wird als ein ‚Leben in einer anderen Welt’ konstruiert, in der insbesondere soziale Beziehungen und die Lebensführung der Gastfamilie maßgeblich zur Erfahrung und Konstruktion von (kultureller) Differenz beitragen. Dabei erweist sich die räumliche Trennung zum Heimatort in wesentlich stärkerem Maße bedeutsam als der Aufenthaltsort selbst. Der Au-pair Aufenthalt eröffnet den Au-pairs eine Erfahrungswelt, die im Zuge der Entwicklung neuer sozialer Rollen das Selbst- und Weltverhältnis verändert und mit Gefühlen von Freiheit und Selbstbestimmung, aber auch Angst und Heimweh verbunden wird. Zudem handelt es sich um ein Lern- und Entwicklungsfeld, welches nicht zuletzt auch an spezifische Entwicklungs­aufgaben des Jugend- und frühen Erwachsenenalters anknüpft. Interessant erscheinen insbesondere die Übergänge vom Heimatland ins Gastland und zurück. Diese Übergänge stellen sich als Bruchstellen dar, die als eine gefühlte Grenze zwischen den zwei erlebten ‚Welten’ Reflexionsprozesse auslösen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung zeigt schließlich auch, dass die Lebensentwürfe der befragten jungen Frauen, nicht wie in der soziologischen Frauenforschung vielfach thematisiert im Dilemma der doppelten Lebensführung aufgehen. Vielmehr sind die Lebensentwürfe durch eine Auslandsorientierung gekennzeichnet, die eine komplexe Lebensplanung nur kurz- bis mittelfristig möglich macht.

The topic of the following diploma thesis is the explanation of the concept of job satisfaction while holding an au-pair position. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the job satisfaction young women (or men), who go abroad to work as au-pair, can feel. The first part of the analysis consists in a theoretical assessment of the mentioned topic, that is to say provide the reader with basic terminology and information about this area of domestic work; we will also sketch out the main factors influencing the most the feeling of satisfaction of au-pair workers. The second and more practical part will feature a description of different types of au-pair workers, including their rights and obligations. The research has been based on in-depth interviews and its aim was to provide detailed and insightful answers to the problematic mentioned above; thanks to the analysis and its gathered results, we have been able to point out the main issues and to suggest adequate and concrete solutions that could boost and increase job satisfaction in this profession.
