Browning's voices: a study of the speaker-environment relationship as a primary means of control in the dramatic monologues of The Ring and The Book

Sullivan, Mary Rose January 1964 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / This dissertation examines the monologues of The Ring and the Book to describe and evaluate the role of the speaker-environment relationship in structuring the poem. Although this relationship has been studied in the shorter works of Browning, little critical attention has been devoted to its role in his major work, despite the poet's extensive comments in Book I on his dramatic method of "resuscitating" dead voices [TRUNCATED]. / 2031-01-01

The twelfth player : – a qualitative study of cheerleading journalism in the Swedish sports journalism

Malmkvist, Alexander, Pettersson, Pontus January 2013 (has links)
This study aims to gain greater knowledge about the phenomenon cheerleading journalism and its existence in the Swedish sports journalism. We did this by making an impact in the media debate, to thereby identify key aspects of cheerleading journalism. These elements are then used to reach a preliminary definition of the phenomenon. This was followed by qualitative interviews with six Swedish sports journalists from newspapers Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter, with the aim to find out how they behaved the phenomenon. The results of the earlier debate and the answers from the respondents show that cheerleading journalism is nationalistic, biased and seeks an inclusive effect on its audience. This phenomenon is considered to be an inferior form of journalism and progress especially in reporting on the Swedish national teams and / or individual representatives of Sweden. The results have also been related to selected theories, agenda-setting, gatekeeping and framing.

Latent Newspaper Functions During the Impact Phase of Hurricane Katrina

Brown, Christina A 10 November 2009 (has links)
Media is used by audiences for more than its simple role as information provider. Audiences have been found to use news providers output in a multitude of ways. It has been found that some audience members have used such output as a way to gain social capital that aids in the generation of feelings of social cohesion with their community. This has been found to be especially true during the impact phase of a natural disaster, such as a hurricane (Perez-Lugo, 2004). Unfortunately what news providers specifically articulate that might have this latent use by audiences has not been studied as much as would be necessary for a concrete understanding of the topic that would aid other news providers in designing output during future disasters. As such, here this paper will explore what the content of the New Orleans Times-Picayune newspaper articulated during the impact phase of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans that had the potential to serve this latent function for its readers.

With the autonomy gained by the composer, its function is separated from the figures performer and the listener, which established a new configuration under the musical season. However, despite the legacy of nineteenth-century tradition in the twentieth century, the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould pointed out new aspects in the unfolding of this relationship. His intense relationship with the studio recording, radio and television, has proposed a different positioning in respect to the figure of the interpreter in relation to his own art and the public. This research is focused on addressing these new designs proposed by Gould, in order to rethink the artistic practice of contemporary pianist. The work is divided into three parts. Chapter 1 is a plot of the historical tradition of concerts, from the end of the eighteenth century to its emergence during the nineteenth century. It also parallels Gould with public concerts and his preference for media (recording studio, radio and television). In chapter 2, is presented in depth about the prospect of Gould presentations in public and also the relationship of the spectator with his interpreter. The last chapter is reflecting about the interpretive process of Gould as an aid to a rethinking of the interpreter today.

Rinaldi, Camila Ladeira Scudeler 27 October 2011 (has links)
This research lies on my acting creative process in the play called Os filhos da Dita, of Arlequins (Theatre group that belongs to the Cooperativa Paulista de Teatro), having as main theoretical/practical basis the psycho physical training proposed by pedagogue-director Vsévolod Meyerhold, aiming at underling the demands and possibilities of a consequent political posture on stage. Based on the relationships established with various artists involved in a creative process from choosing the play theme, dramaturgy development and following scenic creation, I describe the stimulus and motives that led me in the scenic creation. The procedures are developed in open dialogue with the esthetics held by the group in the last 25 years, and subsequent contact established with the audience.
