This diploma thesis deals with competencies of people who participate on a company running. The determination of these competencies and their dividing according to their types and roles that occur in the company are analyzed at the theoretical level. The work examines and studies strategy being the basic reference point for the formulation of the company’s targets and tasks related to them, accomplishment of which is the foundation of the assigned competencies. The practical part of the thesis deals with analysis of an actual company’s environment with the main purpose of determining the particular area of the enterprise which creates a narrowed place and tries to solve this problem by establishing the appropriate competencies.

The curious Bagatelle of Care and Authority

How do care and authority relate to each other, and why is the relation between them important to understand for architects and designers? By experimental modelling and experimental thinking this project tries to understand how the caring for different matters in the design process affect the results and consequences of care. The text draws parallells to early aviation pioneers and how a shifted focus from sheer power to manoeuvrability served them their success.  Through the development of a curious wood treatment technique, and through it’s imagined applications to homes, mainly in large scale housing projects, this project searches eagerly for answers on matters related to care, authority, responsibility, a reasonable degree of rationality, standardisation, the role of the architect and the role of the designer.

' To Bring Them under Control': Vaccination and Medical Authority in England, India, and Jamaica, c. 1800-1910

Thesis advisor: Penelope Ismay / This dissertation explores medical professionalization, public health, and vaccination in England, India, and Jamaica in the nineteenth century. England was the site of the most sustained anti-vaccination agitation of any British possession in the second half of the nineteenth century. Yet by the early twentieth century, the medical profession was a trusted authority and vaccination enjoyed wide public support. In India and Jamaica, we find the opposite. India and Jamaica did not have organized resistance to vaccination on the scale of England, yet vaccination and public health floundered in both areas. In England and the Empire, doctors had a trust problem. New technology and expanding health legislation sparked backlash against the medical community. How doctors responded to that backlash shaped public health and influenced medical authority into the twentieth century. By analyzing the role of trust in the process of medical professionalization in a comparative framework, my dissertation allows us to analyze how medical authority is created and functions in society. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College. Submitted in fulfilment of the requirement for the degree MASTER OF EDUCATION in the Department of Educational Psychology of the Faculty of Education at the University of Zululand, 1997. / The aim of this investigation was to establish the parental authority perspectives of grade one parents by means of a literature and empirical study. As introduction the life-world of the grade one child was reviewed. Life-world is the world in which people conduct both a way of life and mode of being and can be represented as a network of relationships with himself, others, objects and ideas and God. This Gestalt of meaningful relationships makes up the individual's life-world. The grade one child's self-image, the outcome of the relationships with himself, is formed mainly through his relations with people and objects and strongly influences the quality of these relationships. The relationship with parents is qualified by love which implies mutual knowledge, care, trust and authority. Parents who educate their children according to strict, but fair authority, give them security and diroinish doubt and anxiety. The different authority styles of parents were discussed. Some parents adopt an authoritarian parenting style whereby they are the ones in control and decide on all activities and procedures for the children. On the other extreme, parents exert a permissive style of exercising authority which allows the child total freedom to do what he pleases with very little or no discipline and punishment. The most accountable parenting style seems to be exercised by democratic parents. These parents set broad limits, give advice, encourage their children, allow for open communication between parent and child and exercise authority positively. For the purpose of the empirical investigation a self-structured questionnaire was utilized. An analysis was done of 80 questionnaires completed by the parents of grade one children attending schools in Umkomaas. The data thus obtained was processed and interpreted by means of descriptive statistics. In conclusion, a summary and findings emanating from the literature study and the descriptive statistics were presented. Based on these findings, the following recommendations were made: The re-assertion of parents as authoritative figures. Guidance and involvement programmes for parents. That further research must be done regarding the parental authority perspectives of grade one parents.

Exploring the Advancement and Authority Experiences of Lesbian and Gay Corporate Leaders

Research has shown lesbian and gay (LG) corporate leaders are likely to experience issues in advancement and authority in the workplace. However, little is known about how LG leaders experience these issues, and how their experiences influence their careers and organizations. This qualitative multiple-case study explored the advancement and authority experiences of 12 gay male corporate leaders using a constructivist paradigm. The theoretical foundation used Tajfel and Turner's social identity theory and Fassinger, Shullman, and Stevenson's affirmative lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender leadership model. The conceptual framework included stereotypes, discrimination, sexual identity disclosure, corporate culture, and sociopolitical culture. Research questions included how LG corporate leaders experienced advancement and authority and how their experiences influenced their careers. A qualitative research design and a holistic multiple-case study approach were employed. Data analysis included descriptive, in vivo, and concept coding. Codes were grouped into categories and categories into overarching themes. Findings indicated gay corporate leaders experienced challenges, although they can be overcome through ability, dedication, and informed decisions. Additional research should be conducted in lesbian, bisexual, and transgender populations and in younger populations. Creating a positive corporate culture where everyone has a voice, acceptance is communicated, and different viewpoints are appreciated is critical for LG employee achievement, and both LG individuals and organizations are likely to benefit through improved employee commitment and corporate productivity.

The Legal Authority of Local School Boards in the State of Utah With Respect to Teaching Personnel

Problem: The problem of this study was to: (1) identify those laws, court decisions, legal opinions of the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Utah, the legal opinions and policies of the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction of the State of Utah, trends and extra legal practices of local school boards in the State of Utah with respect to teaching personnel, (2) organize such data into topical categories in terms of subject matter , and (3) develop some suggested guidelines and recommendations for local school board policies and legislative enactments in the State of Utah. Summary: A portion of the summary was as follow s: (l) The Office of the State Board of Education in Utah has the sole power to issue teaching certificates and may revoke them for immoral or unprofessional conduct. (2) Local school boards may require additional qualifications of certificated teachers such as areas of training, experience, and health. (3) Written contracts may be entered into with teachers for terms not to exceed five years, providing that they may be terminated for cause at any time. (4) It is not unlawful to employ a certificated teacher who is closely related to a school board member. (S) Utah has no teacher tenure laws, but local school boards may provide for tenure, continuing contracts, and orderly dismissal procedures for teachers through district policy. (6) Local school boards are financially liable for the full term of a teacher' s salary. (7) Local school boards may either insure in the state insurance fund or pay compensation directly to a teacher injured on the job. (8) Immunity from legal suit of local school boards has been waived for certain of their own acts and negligent acts of teachers when performing in their official capacity. (9) Local school boards may insure teachers against individual liability if they are judged negligent in the performance of their duties. Major recommendations: The Utah Legislature should: (1) delete outdated and obsolete statutes pertaining to teaching personnel from the Utah Code Annotated, (2) pass a Professional Negotiation and Tenure Law for teachers, and (3) make it mandatory that local school boards purchase liability insurance for the protection of teachers. The Utah State Board of Education should: (l) withhold State Uniform School Funds from local school boards who continue to employ non-authorized, non -certificated teachers, (2) require a financial penalty of teachers who break their contracts illegally with local school boards, and (3) prohibit local school board members from originally appointing their close relatives as teachers. The Utah School Boards Association should increase its leader ship role with local school boards in such areas as legislation, negotiations, general school operation, and inservice training for newly elected school board members. Additional areas of study suggested by this research were: (1) District court cases in Utah with respect to teaching personnel which have not been taken to the Appellate Courts, (2) Updating of the Utah Code Annotated in all respects in those statutes involving schools, and (3) Reasons why some local school boards in Utah operate extra legally.
