Synthesis of an activated difluorotetraketone monomer via Reissert chemistry

Brumfield, Kimberly K. 11 May 2010 (has links)
The chemistry of Reissert compounds has been utilized to synthesize an activated difluorotetraketone monomer, 1 A-bis { 1-[ 4-(p-fluorobenzoyl)isoquinoly ] carbonyl } benzene (18). Two synthetic routes were explored in an attempt to find an efficient means of preparation. These routes entail preparation via a dibenzylic bis(isoquinoline) and a diketone bis(isoquinoline) system. These compounds were converted to their corresponding Reissert compounds. Reaction of the anion of the dibenzylic Reissert compound with p-fluorobenzaldehyde, followed by oxidation of both benzylic sites has produced the novel difluorotetraketone monomer. In addition, rearrangement of the dike tone Reissert compound has produced the novel difluorotetraketone monomer. This monomer offers a route to a novel family of poly(heteroarylene ethers). / Master of Science

Study of the oxidative degradation of 2,2,3,4,5-pentaphenyl-3- cyclopentenone by various oxidants ; and, [1,5]-sigmatropic phenyl rearrangements in 2- and/or 5-(p- or m-substituted phenyl)-1,3,4-triphenyl-2,4- cyclopentadien-1-ols: electronic effects at the migration terminus

Brubaker, William Frederick January 1982 (has links)
A Harmnett series comprised of seven 2- and/or 5-(p- or m-substituted phenyl)-1,3,4-triphenyl-2,4-cyclopentadien-l-ols was prepared and the ratio of the two-product mixture resulting from their thermal [1,5]- sigmatropic phenyl rearrangements was determined. In this system phenyl could migrate toward either of two positions, and the effect of the substituents upon the direction of migration was investigated to determine the extent of electronic effects in this neutral sigmatropic rearrangement. The results of these rearrangements are used to discuss the proposed transition state for phenyl rearrangements in the pentaphenylcyclopentadienol system. A strictly neutral transition state is proposed. In addition, the oxidative degradation of 2,2,3,4,5-pentaphenyl-3-cyclopenten-l-one by various oxidants was investigated. This substrate was found to be inert to all the reagents examined, with the exception of diacetyl chromate. The action of this oxidant upon the substrate produced an equimolar mixture of benzil, benzophenone, and benzoic acid in an overall yield of 40 to 42 percent. / Ph. D.

DISC, FSC, and the cost of capital in the export sector

Brumbaugh, David January 1985 (has links)
DISC and FSC are two trade policy instruments of the United States that proV'ide a tax incentive for exporting. The two measures provide a stimulus for investment in the export sector by reduci.ng the cost of capital for exporting firms. According to a model based on the neoclassical theory of optimum capital accumulation, the minimum effect either DISC or FSC can have is surprisingly small, reducing the cost of capital by less than percent in either case. The maximum effect is large, reducing the cost of capital in the export sector by around 20 percent. However, the maximum effect of DISC and FSC is accompanied by side-effects that reduce economic efficiency significantly. These results therefore call into question the effectiveness of DISC and FSC as instruments of trade policy. / Master of Arts

The relationship between self esteem, self perceived clothing construction skill level, and the prices charged for sewing services in home based businesses

Bruck, Karen Sue 27 April 2010 (has links)
The number of home based businesses (HBB) utilizing home economic skills and entrepreneurial skills has increased in the 1980's. This has brought about an awareness of the numerous problems being faced by the owners of these businesses. This study was designed to investigate the problem of pricing sewing services in HBB's. The objective of this study was to analyze the relationships between self esteem, self perceived clothing construction skill level, and the prices charged for the sewing services. Data were collected using Rosenberg's self esteem 10 item questionnaire and three garment case studies in which the participants quoted prices and times for constructing each garment. A 51 item skills list, in which each participant rated her own clothing construction skills, was also completed. Demographic data was also collected. The instruments were field tested with seven seamstresses in the Blacksburg area. The pricing results from the case study field tests were used as standards for comparison in the study. The sample was made up of 46 seamstresses whose names were obtained from Virginia Cooperative Extension home economists. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlations, and Multiple Linear Regressions. Self esteem was found to be significantly correlated to self perceived clothing construction skill level. Broad price ranges were quoted for each garment. Urban price quotes were slightly higher than rural prices. / Master of Science

Bouvier, Luc. 10 May 2024 (has links)

Predicting strength of consensus in small groups

Brubaker, Dale M. 22 August 2009 (has links)
This study was conducted to determine if the strength of consensus in small groups could be predicted from group members' perceptions of information usefulness and shared understanding. Eight groups of five and two groups of four subjects participated in a group consensus exercise designed to allow mathematical measurement of the consensus achieved. The subjects also completed questionnaires designed to measure their perceptions of information usefulness, shared understanding, and strength of consensus. The findings of this study suggest that shared understanding is a strong predictor of the strength of consensus while information usefulness is only slightly predictive. This study is the first step toward development of management tools to measure consensus in small groups when no mathematical algorithm is possible. The goal of this and further research is to provide managers with a way to know how strongly workers support actions they have agreed· to take in order to make participatory management more effective. Tools such as these can also be used in the public policy arena. When groups of concerned citizens are brought together, these toolS can be used to see if the consensus achieved is really representative of everyone's views. / Master of Science

Development of rate related exercise-induced myocardial ischemia and risk of selected coronary diesease endpoints

Bruce, Sharon Diane 10 November 2009 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to determine whether serial graded exercise test (GXT) responses, known to have prognostic importance, in the coronary artery disease population generally, can differentiate certain cardiovascular morbidity and mortality endpoints among physically active patients. Data were obtained in 1989 at three community-based cardiac rehabilitation programs from three serial GXT results in 23 paired cardiac event (CE) and non-event (NE) patients. A cardiac event was defined as having an myocardial infarction (MI), percutaneous translumial angioplasty (PTCA), coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), and cardiac death. Comparisons were made just prior to each CE patients event. Statistical analyses were done on four exercise test variables: ST-segment depression (ST80) at peak exercise, heart rate adjusted 5Tsegment depression (ST/HR slope), exercise induced ventricular dysrhythmias (PVC), and exercise induced chest pain. Chi-square analyses showed no significant changes across the serial tests for any of the variables examined in either the CE or NE groups (P)0.05). Nevertheless, the CE group had significantly more 8Tsegment depression, ST/HR slope, and exercise chest pain in all GXT intervals in comparison to the NE group. These findings do not support the use of serial exercise GXTs for prognostic information for the physically active cardiac rehabilitation maintenance patients. / Master of Science
