The Meaning, Value, and Possibility of Being at Home in the Social World

Sciaraffa, Stefan Carlo January 2007 (has links)
Consider the following Hegelian idea: It is important that we be at home in the social world, and it is deeply problematic if we are not. In this dissertation, I employ concepts of contemporary vintage to specify the meaning of the Hegelian notions of the social world, being at home in the social world, and being alienated from it. I also explicate the value of being at home in one's world and the conditions under which being at home in this manner is possible. This dissertation proceeds in six chapters. In the first chapter, I describe the social world as comprising social institutions and social roles. I argue that being at home in the social world entails identifying with one's roles and institutions. In the second chapter, I argue that an agent realizes the values of meaning and self-determination through pursuing her social roles. Thus, the value of being at home in the social world is that when the world is a home and one perceives it to be such, one can realize the values of meaning and self-determination through participating in its institutions. Moreover, I argue that when one identifies with one's role one thereby has a further weighty reason to conform to the duties that constitute the role--namely, by so doing one achieves the goods of meaning and self-determination. In chapters three through five, I consider whether it is possible to identify with and experience roles characterized by authority structures as homes. Chapters three and four specify the notion of an authority structure. In chapter five, I enumerate the conditions under which an agent can be at home in an authority-claiming institution. In short, I argue that the key conditions are that the institution's authority is justified and that the agent identifies with the institution and her role within it. Finally, in chapter six I develop an implication of chapter four's discussion of authority for the debate in analytic jurisprudence between the proponents of exclusive and inclusive legal positivism. In short, this discussion supports inclusive legal positivism and weighs against exclusive legal positivism.

Att komma hem : Coming home

Ringeborn, Ulrika January 2011 (has links)
In this essay I analyze the meaning of the concepts home and at home and the feeling of coming home. What is a home and what different interpretations are there regarding the concepts of home and being at home? What kinds of feelings are aroused by coming home? The world we live in offers great opportunities to travel, which in itself creates a perspective on the meanings of the concepts. The world we live in also forces people to move from their homes, families and countries due to various reasons, which creates various problems and a certain urgency concerning the concepts. I describe basic terms concerning the concepts, both regarding concrete definitions and more abstract notions, and then compare them with my own reflections.          Based on my writing project Coming home I discuss these questions in various ways. I also describe the considerations I have made regarding these issues and the impact they have made in the text collection. I present my own description of home as a result of and defined by the emotions this term creates and where the moods are decisive.          The intention with Coming home is to offer different perspectives on and reflections upon the various feelings of coming home expressed by my own voice in the literary texts under study.

Gasto Catastrófico en Salud y Pobreza Multidimensional / Out-of-pocket expenditure on health and its effect on poverty

Torres Carpio, Nicole Katherine 13 November 2020 (has links)
Health coverage for the entire Peruvian population is the main objective of the national health system. Their mismanagement of investments destined to achieve this objective, show little effectiveness. Due to this, the multidimensionally poor population is vulnerable to any eventuality that affects their health and is more prone to incur out-of-pocket expenses that will ultimately end up being catastrophic, to access the corresponding medical services. In this context, these expenses are worrying, since in the long term they worsen the well-being of the household. For a more comprehensive analysis, the Multidimensional Poverty Index will first be developed. Followed by a binary variable model that will help estimate the final regression and define the relationship between multidimensional poverty and catastrophic health spending. Other variables used to explain this expense are: gender, occupation, affiliation to some insurance, marital status, educational level, and presence of members vulnerable to becoming ill. The results obtained show that this catastrophic expenditure is more likely to occur in multidimensionally poor households than in multidimensionally nonpoor ones. This highlights the importance of the State to develop policies and / or manage programs that protect the health of the population, especially the most vulnerable, in order to improve the growth and development of the country. / Trabajo de investigación
