CRAFTING THE FEVER

Harlin, Andrea Nikki 01 June 2016 (has links)
The Hibiscus Snake is a collection of poetry investigating the female experience encountering danger. She explores psychic landscapes descended in the unconscious uncanny, the feminine body within the context of horror, and lyrical poems about living in working class communities in San Bernardino. The collection attempts to subvert the presentation of the female body in Horror genres, moving it from a position of victimization to empowerment. In other poems, the speaker ventures into horror-like psychic landscapes filled with images representing the anxiety experienced growing up in a city where danger is quite real. The protagonist risks these journeys to overcome her fear and achieve a transformation. The collection also contains elegies written in lyrical, free-verse form. I also explicate how I employ line breaks to exaggerate the multiplicity of lines, words and connotations. This collection works toward understanding and redefining the female experience and identity within a range of male dominated contexts and dangerous environments.

Cal State San Bernardino Social Work Students' Attitudes Toward Domestic Minor Sex-Trafficked (DMST) Youth

Marinelli, Crystal Lorraine, Hunt, Andrea Sara 01 June 2017 (has links)
Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST) affects hundreds of thousands of youth every year. In the past, DMST youth were often viewed by law enforcement and the criminal justice system as "offenders" and were usually arrested for solicitation even though they were minors. While new laws have begun to identify youth as victims, it has not yet been ensured that social workers have adopted this perspective. This quantitative study's purpose was to examine Cal State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) Bachelor of Social Work (BASW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) students' attitudes toward DMST youth. Participants completed an online questionnaire using Qualtrics software. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21, using statistical tests including frequencies, Pearson's R, and ANOVA. The hypothesis that knowledge, exposure to curriculum, and past experiences impacted students' stigmatization of DMST youth was not supported by the data. Instead, results indicated that CSUSB social work students did not stigmatize the DMST population. Because these findings cannot be generalized to social workers in the field, future research should explore whether social workers currently working with DMST youth stigmatize this population. These findings also have implications for the CSUSB School of Social Work as they revealed that some students lacked education about this population and, consequently, felt unprepared to work with this population.

Missionaries' Beasts in New Spain: The Utilization of the European Bestiary Tradition in Sahagún's Florentine Codex / Utilization of the European Bestiary Tradition in Sahagún's Florentine Codex

Kilian, Laura Elizabeth 09 1900 (has links)
ix, 115 p. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Friar Bernardino de Sahagún's Historia general de las cosas de la Nueva Espana, more commonly known as the Florentine Codex, begun in 1558, is arguably the most comprehensive source of information concerning the pre-colonial and colonial indigenous cultures of New Spain. This compilation, produced both by Sahagún and indigenous aides, documents the convergence of Aztec and European cultures. As such it represents the hybrid nature of colonial culture and is best approached from an understanding of both its European and Aztec influences. It is the aim of this thesis to consider the Florentine Codex, and Book Eleven ("Earthly Things") specifically, in the context of the European bestiary tradition. This thesis will illuminate Sahagún's role as a Franciscan missionary and the ways in which he utilized Aztec animal imagery syncretically, for the purpose of evangelization. Analysis takes the form of case studies concerning the jaguar, birds, and serpents. / Committee in Charge: Dr. James Harper, Chair; Dr. Lauren Kilroy; Dr. Robert Haskett

Bernardino de Sahagún a předkolumbovské pojetí fungování světa / Bernardino de Sahagún and Pre-Columbian Understanding of the World

Trčková, Helena January 2016 (has links)
(in English) The aim of this thesis is to document the Pre-Columbian understanding of the world based on the early colonial text Historia general de las cosas de Nueva España. The author of this book is a Franciscan Friar Bernardino de Sahagún, for that reason I also focus in the introductory chapters of this thesis on the Franciscan activity in the area of the former "Aztec Empire" straight after the conquest. To provide a complete introduction into the context I also include basic information about the Aztec civilization before the arrival of the Spaniards and about the dramatic encounter of these two cultures. The core of my work is a summary and an analysis of Historia general. In this thesis the Pre-Columbian culture is presented throught its two aspects - the spiritual and the "mundane". The content of the thesis provides information about the singificance of the gods in the life of the Aztecs, the rituals dedicated to them, political administration of the "empire" but as well for example the education of the young girls and boys in the Aztec society. Based on the analysis of the Sahagún's text I also mention the distortion of some parts of the text and I point out the necessity for critical reading of his work.
