A Comparison Of Marriage Education And Brief Couples Counseling

Livingston, Tina 01 January 2006 (has links)
This study investigated marital adjustment for couples participating in one of two treatment groups; the Brief Integrative Couples Counseling model(Young & Long, 1998, 2007); and the PREPARE/ENRICH Empowering Couples marriage education weekend workshop (Olson & Olson,2000). This study examined the following research questions: Do couples show a different level of marital adjustment following Brief Integrative Couples Counseling compared to those who receive a marriage education treatment?; Do couples show greater marital adjustment following Brief Integrative Couples Counseling compared to those who participated in a Marriage Education weekend workshop treatment over time? This article presents an exploration of mean marital adjustment scores following participation in a Brief Integrative Couples Counseling treatment or a marriage education weekend workshop protocol. This study was a quasi-experimental design because participants were placed in pre-existing groups by self-selection. Following statistical analyses using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), the data suggest there is no difference in the level of change in marital adjustment scores between the two treatment groups. In addition, follow up analysis of covariance (ANCOVA's) was conducted on marital adjustment, using demographics as covariates.

Perceptions of Elementary School Counselors Regarding the Utility of Solution-Focused Brief Counseling in the School Setting

Kegley, Janet Brockington 25 September 2000 (has links)
This study examined the perceptions of elementary school counselors regarding their experience in using solution-focused brief counseling for meeting the demanding responsibilities of their job and the particular needs of the students they serve. Specifically, the four research questions addressed the school counselors' perceptions regarding: (1) use and importance of particular solution-focused techniques; (2) effectiveness of solution-focused strategies in addressing specific student issues; (3) training in solution-focused brief counseling; and (4) use of this approach in settings other than the counseling office. The data for this study were collected from elementary school counselors in Virginia who had previously received training in solution-focused brief counseling. This training was provided by their school systems as inservice and was conducted by the same workshop leader in all instances. The school counselors were sent a questionnaire that was developed by the researcher. The survey contained a selection of Likert-style scale questions, yes/no items, rank-order items, and open-ended questions. The final section contained questions designed to obtain demographic information about the respondent and the school and students they served. The researcher conducted a follow-up interview with several school counselors to supplement the survey data. The data analysis was descriptive and relational in nature. The findings of the study indicate that elementary school counselors who have received training in solution-focused brief counseling philosophies and techniques find it important and useful for working with children. The majority of the school counselors indicated that they use all of the solution-focused techniques listed in the survey to at least some degree. Their responses to the survey indicated the perception that this approach is effective with various student issues. The school counselors reported the perception that they have some proficiency with solution focused brief counseling and that they have interest in pursuing more training. The school counselors also indicated that they were able to use solution-focused brief counseling philosophies in school settings other than the counseling office. In summary, school counselors appear to have a relatively positive perception of solution-focused brief counseling as an approach for working with elementary age school students. Recommendations for practice and future research are presented. / Ph. D.

The Role Of Design Brief In Urban Design Competitions

Kabal, Emre 01 May 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Design brief is the descriptive and connective medium of design competitions. The main aim (design problem) of the design competition is explained by means of design brief which is setting up all needs and requirements or design program (specification) which is explaining the requirement list. The definition of design problem should be formulated to make clear statements in order to avoid misapprehensions by forming creative environment to enable creation of new ideas. The communication processes are composed between the participants of the competition, which are the client, competitors, jury and the public, by means of the formulation of design problem by the design brief. This thesis aims to understand the role of design brief as different from design program (specification) in the process and result of the urban design competitions by studying the nature and effects of design brief as the main communication tool in the design and evaluation processes in design competitions. Three urban design competitions are chosen as the main study areas of the thesis because of their different processes and results.

The objective of this study is to perform an exploratory investigation of the psychotherapeutic potential. The Playful Box for Seniors instrument (CLI) offering possibilities of use in different contexts, thus covering a large number of elderly in various health conditions. For both a theoretical foundation was organized in order to cover the main elements related to the elderly, then it conducted a survey of the techniques used with the elderly in Brazil and other countries to know the other existing instruments, with special emphasis on the differences of Playful Box for Seniors . We used the qualitative methodology of psychoanalytic approach, the stage of data collection involved fifteen elderly of each institution: University Hospital of USP (HUUSP), Long Term Care Institutions for the elderly (LTCF), and the Open University of the Third Age USP. After signing the consent form, the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used, it has been two preventive clinical interviews with the use of Adaptive Operational Diagnostic Scale (EDAO) and six meetings using the Brief Psychotherapy Operationalized (PBO) and Playful Box for the Elderly (CLI) with each of the elderly, once a week, The Playful Box for Seniors facilitated the emotional bond, allowing significant amount of clinical material emerged, facilitating the management of basic anxieties, unconscious desires, conflicts and major defense mechanisms due to the playful and projective character of the instrument. Use of this clinical procedure allowed the demonstration of the multiple expressions of the inner world, a decisive factor for understanding the elderly, providing insights into new directions for the story of life, new meanings and the free expression of unconscious fantasies, thus raise understanding the old psychodynamic as well as allowing access to preventive aspects, and as a result, enabling effective action is to conquer, maintenance or improvement of health, well-being and quality of life of the elderly population

What do we know about brief interventions for physical activity that could be delivered in primary care consultations? A systematic review of reviews

Lamming, Laura, Pears, S., Mason, Dan, Morton, K., Bijker, M., Sutton, S., Hardeman, W. 21 February 2017 (has links)
yes / This systematic review of reviews aims to investigate how brief interventions (BIs) are defined, whether they increase physical activity, which factors influence their effectiveness, who they are effective for, and whether they are feasible and acceptable. We searched CINAHL, Cochrane database of systematic reviews, DARE, HTA database, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network from their inception until May 2015 to identify systematic reviews of the effectiveness of BIs aimed at promoting physical activity in adults, reporting a physical activity outcome and at least one BI that could be delivered in a primary care setting. A narrative synthesis was conducted. We identified three specific BI reviews and thirteen general reviews of physical activity interventions that met the inclusion criteria. The BI reviews reported varying definitions of BIs, only one of which specified a maximum duration of 30 min. BIs can increase self-reported physical activity in the short term, but there is insufficient evidence about their long-term impact, their impact on objectively measured physical activity, and about the factors that influence their effectiveness, feasibility and acceptability. Current definitions include BIs that are too long for primary care consultations. Practitioners, commissioners and policy makers should be aware of this when interpreting evidence about BIs, and future research should develop and evaluate very brief interventions (of 5 min or less) that could be delivered in a primary care consultation. / Citation sent on from Donna. The language and rhetoric of affirmative action: a structural topic model analysis of supreme court amicus briefs

Young, Ryan Lewis 01 August 2019 (has links)
Using a structural topic model text analysis approach in a mixed methods framework, these studies seek to better understand the language, rhetoric, and rationales amici curiae employ to defend or deride affirmative action in cases before the Supreme Court. Through a better understanding of the content and framing of these briefs, the next time an affirmative action case is before the court a larger, more articulate, and more united network of advocates from the higher education sector and beyond will be better position to have their voices heard.
