The occurrence and consequences of conspecific brood parasitism in the Prothonotary Warbler (Protonotaria citrea)

Brood parasites avoid costs associated with raising young by adding eggs to another individual’s clutch and providing no parental care. When conspecific brood parasitism occurs in species with high parental investment, we expect hosts to suffer costs for raising an enlarged brood. Here I describe conspecific brood parasitism (CBP) in the prothonotary warbler using maternal exclusion analyses of 333 family groups. I found that 23.4% of clutches contained at least one offspring that was not matched to the social mother and determined that parasitism seems to be an opportunistic tactic. Hosts had lower average annual reproductive success than non-hosts, but CBP did not affect adult survival or nestling body condition and likelihood of recruitment. Clutches with CBP received less provisioning from the male, but not female, parent. Future research is needed to understand the effects of density and competition on the breeding behaviors of this and other similar species.

Reproductive decisions in the lesser black-backed gull Larus fuscus and their effects on reproductive success

The effect of several fundamental reproductive 'decisions' upon reproductive success were examined over a three year period at a large, inland gullery in the Pennines. Variations in reproductive parameters in relation to timing of breeding and reproductive success were compared among years. Determinants of the degree of hatching asynchrony were identified. Eggs from two years were taken for yolk lipid analysis, using gas chromatography. Variation in micronutrient content of eggs within clutches and between years was assessed in relation to egg size and yolk size, in order to examine resource allocation decisions of individuals. Timing of breeding of individuals was experimentally manipulated through the exchange of whole clutches of eggs between early and late laying birds, whilst controlling for variation in clutch size and egg-size, in order to assess whether the seasonal decrease in reproductive success was best explained by a decrease in food supply or differences in quality among parents. I experimentally manipulated the within-brood mass hierarchy of gulls, whilst controlling for variation in both chick quality and parental quality, in order to assess the effect of hatching asynchrony per se on chick growth and survival, and whether parents optimized the degree of hatching asynchrony with respect to the prevailing food supply. Brood size was experimentally reduced in order to assess the costs and benefits of the production of supernumary young. This was acheived by comparison of chick growth, feather development and chick survival of unmanipulated three-chick broods with broods where either the a-chick or the c- chick had been removed. I present a general discussion of the results within the context of life-history theory and a model for the evolution of hatching asynchrony in the lesser black-backed gull.

The expression of thermoTRP channels in the brood patch of jungle fowl (<em>Gallus gallus</em>) during egg incubation

<p> </p><p>The regulation of egg temperature requires the transfer of heat from the brood patch. Thus, the brood patch needs the presence of thermo receptors as well as an appropriate vasomotor response. During the incubation an exact detection of the egg’s temperature is essential. So, in this study we attempted to detect the presence and regulation of the expressionof  thermoTRP channels (thermo Transient Receptor Potential channels) (TRPV1, TRPV3, TRPV4, TRPM8 and TRPA1) during egg incubation. Six incubating Jungle fowl hens, and five non incubating jungle fowl hens and one jungle fowl cock were used as main samples and controls. Total RNA was extracted from liver, kidney, heart, blood, White Blood Cell, Dorsal Root Ganglion and skin. The samples from the skin were taken from the brood patch and inter scapular region. PCR investigation showed that different thermo TRP channels were expressed in different tissues. TRPV1, V3, V4 and M8 mRNA were detected in the skin of brood patch. However, V1 and V3 expression in the brood patch skin did not differ between broody and non broody hens. In conclusion, although considerable morphological changes in the skin of brood patch could be seen, the expression of TRPV1 and V3 channels did not change significantly, but this cannot exclude the alteration in the expression of TRP channels in different stages of broodiness or specific parts of skin like AVAs (Arteriovenous anastomosis) which will be the subject for more studies.</p>

Evaluation of physiological and pheromonal factors regulating honey bee, apis mellifera l. (hymenoptera: apidae) foraging and colony growth

This dissertation examines some important physiological and pheromonal factors regulating foraging and colony growth in honey bee colonies. The first study analyzed effects of soybean trypsin inhibitor (SBTI) on the development of hypopharyngeal gland, midgut enzyme activity and survival of the honey bee. In this study newly emerged caged bees were fed pollen diets containing three different concentrations of SBTI. Bees fed 1% SBTI had significantly reduced hypopharyngeal gland protein content. This study indicated that nurse bees fed a pollen diet containing at least 1% SBTI would be poor producers of larval food. In the second study nurse bee biosynthesis of brood food was manipulated using SBTI, and the resulting effects on pollen foraging were measured. Experimental colonies were given equal amounts of SBTI treated and untreated pollen. SBTI treatments had significantly lower hypopharyngeal gland protein content than controls. There was no significant difference in the ratio of pollen to non-pollen foragers and pollen load weights collected between the treatments. These results supported the pollen foraging effort predictions generated from the direct independent effects hypothesis. In the third study we tested whether brood pheromone (BP) regulated queen egg laying via modulation of worker-queen interactions and nurse bee rearing behaviors. This experiment had BP and control treatments. Queens in the BP treatment laid greater number of eggs, were fed for a greater amount of time and were less idle. Significantly more time was spent in cell cleaning by the bees in BP treatments. The results suggest that brood pheromone regulated queen egg-laying rate by modulating worker-queen interactions and nurse bee rearing behavior. The final study of this dissertation focused on how dose-dependent BP-mediated division of labor affected the partitioning of non-foraging and foraging work forces and the amount of brood reared. Triple cohort colonies were used and there were three treatments, Low BP, High BP and Control. Low BP treatments had significantly higher ratio of pollen to non-pollen foragers and greater pollen load weights. Low BP treatment bees foraged at a significantly younger age. This study has shown that BP elicits dose-dependent modulation of foraging and brood rearing behaviors.

Brood ecology and population dynamics of King Eiders

Birth and death processes and the extent of dispersal directly affect population dynamics. Knowledge of ecological factors that influence these processes provides insight into natural selection and understanding about changes in population size. King eiders (Somateria spectabilis) breed across the arctic region of North America and winter in polar oceanic waters of the western and eastern regions of the continent. Here I studied a local population of King Eiders at Karrak Lake, Nunavut, where I used analysis of naturally-occurring stable isotopes (13C, 15N) from feathers, in conjunction with banding data, to investigate the extent of dispersal among winter areas and the influence of winter area on subsequent breeding. In addition, I used capture-mark-recapture methods to (1) investigate the relative contributions of survival and recruitment probabilities to local population dynamics, and (2) to test hypotheses about the influence of specific ecological factors on those probabilities or their components, e.g., nest success, duckling survival. Isotopic data suggested that female King Eiders were not strongly philopatric to wintering areas between years. Individuals that wintered in western seas initiated nests earlier and had slightly larger clutch sizes during early nest initiation relative to females that wintered in the east. Female condition during incubation did not vary by winter area. Female King Eiders of known breeding age were at least 3-years-old before their first breeding attempt. Age of first successful breeding attempt did not appear to be influenced by body size. However, after reaching breeding age, larger females apparently experienced greater breeding propensity. Adult survival rate (1996-2002) was estimated as 0.87 and recapture probabilities varied with time and ranged from 0.31 to 0.67. There is no evidence of survival advantages related to larger size. Population growth for this local study area was high, estimated at 20%/year with larger females contributing more to the population growth than smaller females. With continued population growth, density-dependent effects on components of recruitment appeared to emerge; the proportion of the female population that nested successfully declined with increasing population size. The probability of breeding successfully did not correlate with Mayfield estimates of nest success. To gain insight into King Eider brood ecology I, respectively, monitored 111 and 46 individually-marked ducklings from broods of 23 and 11 radio-marked King Eiders during 2000 and 2001. Total brood loss accounted for 84% of all duckling mortality with most brood loss (77%) less than 2 days after hatch. Estimated apparent survival rates of ducklings to 22 days of age were 0.10 for those that remained with radio-marked females, 0.16 for all ducklings, including those that had joined other broods, and 0.31 for broods. Ducklings brooded by larger females experienced higher survival than those brooded by smaller females, and ducklings that hatched earlier in the breeding season survived at higher rates. Overland brood movements of 1 km or more occurred in both years, and survival was greatest for ducklings that dispersed from Karrak Lake to smaller ponds than on Karrak Lake itself, the central nesting area. Estimates of duckling survival, combined with relative contributions to the population by adults, suggest that ecological factors such as body size can influence population growth. Furthermore, low duckling survival and delayed maturity, emphasize the need of high adult survival for population growth to occur. These data, in combination with evidence of dispersal among wintering areas have helped contribute to a broader understanding of North American King Eider demographics.

Variation in and Responses to Brood Pheromone of the Honey Bee (Apis mellifera)

Brood pheromone of the honey bee, (Apis mellifera) has been shown to elicit a wide array of primer and releaser effects on non‐foragers and foragers leading to the regulation of nursing, pollen foraging, and behavioral development such that the behavior of the colony may be regulated by the amount and condition of the larvae. To date, all studies into the effects of brood pheromone have either used uncharacterized whole extracts or a single blend of brood pheromone characterized from a population of honey bees in France. The variation in the relative proportions of the ten fatty‐acid ester components that characterize brood pheromone and some effects of this variation on pollen foraging and sucrose response thresholds were therefore observed. The objectives met in this dissertation were to determine whether changes in brood pheromone component proportions (blend) or amount communicates larval nutritional status and reports the results of observations of nurses and foragers in response to blends of brood pheromone from deprived and‐non deprived larvae, to measure how changes in brood pheromone blend changed pollen foraging behavior and if such changes could account for the pollen foraging differences between Africanized and European bees, and finally to observe the effects of exposure time on brood pheromone blend and to observe whether non‐foragers made contact with the pheromone. Brood pheromone was found to vary by larval rearing environment, but did not elicit the expected behaviors that would support a cue of nutritional status. Brood pheromone also varied significantly by mitochondrial lineage/population source and responses to brood pheromone appeared to be coadapted to blend, suggesting that brood pheromone may be important in race recognition. Finally, brood pheromone varied significantly over time and was found to be removed from sources by bees, suggesting possible mechanisms for loss of effect. Combined the results of this research indicate that brood pheromone blend differences lead to profound changes in colony behavior related to pollen foraging and food provisioning, providing novel tools for colony manipulation and mechanisms for understanding brood rearing division of labor and chemical communication.

Nest parasitism in red-breasted mergansers (Mergus serrator) in New Brunswick

Intraspecific nest parasitism was studied in a group of colonial Red-breasted Mergansers (Mergus serrator) nesting on the Tern Islands of Kouchibouguac National Park in New Brunswick in 1992. Nest parasitism is very common in this colony, and may influence the high rate of nest abandonment observed. Emphasis was placed on determining rates of successful parasitism (i.e. eggs added during the laying period of the hen at that nest), which are evolutionarily significant, and can easily go undetected. Three methods were used to determine if a nest contained egg(s) from another hen: abnormally large clutch size: more than one egg laid per day: and comparisons of DNA fingerprints of the hen versus putative chicks. When eggs were added to a nest during incubation, the nest was also labelled parasitized, but such eggs were not fully incubated (non-term) and thus were not successful. A new method of blood sampling ducklings in pipped eggs was tested and found to have negative effects on survival. As many as 14.8% (13/88) of the ducklings sampled subsequently died. Researchers wishing to use this method should proceed with caution. DNA fingerprinting determined that 50.0% of nests tested (6/12) were successfully parasitized. Two of six parasitized nests would have gone undetected using the other criteria to detect parasitism, thus proving the value of DNA fingerprinting. Of hatched young genetically analyzed, 30.9% (17/55) were parasitic. Nest parasitism appears to be an alternative breeding strategy in this population. Extra-pair copulation, previously unrecorded in this species, was discovered through DNA fingerprinting in two of four nests analyzed.
