A Study of Different Switched Mode Power Amplifiers for the Burst Mode Operation

<p>Power-amplifier efficiency is a significant issue for the overall efficiency of most wireless system. Therefore, currently there are different kind of Switched mode power amplifiers are developed which are showing very high efficiency also at higher frequencies but all of these amplifiers are subjected to drive with the constant envelope signals. Whereas, for the increasing demand of high data rate transmissions in wireless communication there are some new modulation schemes are introduced and which are generating no more a constant envelope signal but a high peak to average power signal. Therefore, recently a new technique is proposed called the burst mode operation for operating the switched mode power amplifiers efficiently while driven by a high peak to average power signal.</p><p> </p><p>The purpose of this master thesis work was to review the theory of this burst mode operation and some basic investigations of this theory on switched mode power amplifiers were performed in simulation environments. The amplifiers of class D, inverse D, DE and J are studied. The thesis work was mainly carried out by ADS and partly in MATLAB SIMULINK environment. Since this burst mode operation is a completely new technique therefore a new Harmonic balance simulation setups in ADS and Microwave Office are developed to generate the RF burst signals.</p><p> </p><p>A Class J amplifier based on LDMOS technique is measured by a 16 carrier multi-tone signal having peak to average power ratio of 7 dB and achieved the drain efficiency of 50% with -30 dBc linearity at 946 MHz.</p><p> </p><p> </p>

Pre-B Cell Colony-enhancing Factor (PBEF) Promotes Neutrophil Inflammatory Function through Enzymatic and Non-enzymatic Mechanisms

Pre-B Cell Colony-Enhancing Factor (PBEF) is a cytokine-like molecule that functions as a nicotinamide phosphoribosyl transferase (Nampt) in a salvage pathway of NAD biosynthesis. PBEF has well-characterized activity as an extracellular inflammatory mediator and has been proposed to signal through the insulin receptor (IR). As neutrophils are key effectors of the innate immune response to infection and injury, we hypothesized that PBEF promotes pro-inflammatory function in neutrophils and that these pro-inflammatory effects may occur through interactions with the neutrophil IR or through PBEF���s enzymatic Nampt activity. Our studies focused on two important facets of neutrophil inflammatory function: their ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and undergo constitutive apoptosis. We found that, although PBEF does not activate oxidative burst on its own, it primes for ROS generation through the NADPH oxidase. PBEF promotes membrane translocation of cytosolic NADPH oxidase subunits p40phox and p47phox, but not p67phox, induces p40phox phosphorylation and activates Rac. Priming, translocation and phosphorylation are dependent on activation of p38 and ERK mitogen activated protein kinases. PBEF priming of neutrophils occurs independent of its Nampt capacity or of interactions with IR. We next investigated the effects of PBEF on neutrophil constitutive apoptosis. Our lab previously established that extracellular PBEF delays neutrophil apoptosis. Accordingly, we next investigated the mechanism through which this delay was occurring. PBEF-induced delayed apoptosis was enhanced in the presence of Nampt substrates, and NAD alone could delay apoptosis to an extent comparable to PBEF. Delayed apoptosis was blocked by a Nampt inhibitor and was lacking when a mutated PBEF deficient in Nampt activity was utilized. The cell-surface NAD glycohydrolase, CD38, can convert NAD to cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR). Blocking CD38 activity with a blocking antibody partially reversed the delay of apoptosis induced by PBEF in conjunction with its substrates, and delayed apoptosis could be achieved by addition of the CD38 product cADPR. Finally, we found that delayed apoptosis induced by PBEF did not involve IR. These results indicate that PBEF can prime for enhanced oxidative burst and delay apoptosis in neutrophils, and that these phenomena occur through distinct mechanisms.

Modeling Future All-Optical Networks without Buffering Capabilities

In this thesis we provide a model for a bufferless optical burst switching (OBS) and an optical packet switching (OPS) network. The thesis is divided in three parts. In the first part we introduce the basic functionality and structure of OBS and OPS networks. We identify the blocking probability as the main performance parameter of interest. In the second part we study the statistical properties of the traffic that will likely run through these networks. We use for this purpose a set of traffic traces obtained from the Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya. Our conclusion is that traffic entering the optical domain in future OBS/OPS networks will be long-range dependent (LRD). In the third part we present the model for bufferless OBS/OPS networks. This model takes into account the results from the second part of the thesis concerning the LRD nature of traffic. It also takes into account specific issues concerning the functionality of a typical bufferless packet-switching network. The resulting model presents scalability problems, so we propose an approximative method to compute the blocking probability from it. We empirically evaluate the accuracy of this method, as well as its scalability.

Glucose and insulin modulate phagocytosis and production of reactive oxygen metabolites in human neutrophil granulocytes

Neutrophil granulocytes play an important role in the host defence against invading microorganisms and constitute the frontline of defence within the innate immune system and are among the first cells to arrive at the site of inflammation. Effective phagocytosis and killing of invading pathogens by neutrophils is of significant importance for successful resistance to infectious diseases. An important complication in diabetes mellitus is an increased sensitivity to infections and increased tissue damage, leading to many secondary diseases. This may in part be explained by an impaired function of neutrophil granulocytes. Since the exact mechanisms underlying defective neutrophil function in diabetes mellitus are not fully understood, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of elevated glucose and insulin concentrations on phagocytosis of opsonized yeast and on production of reactive oxygen metabolites (ROS) in normal human neutrophils. Elevated D-glucose concentrations (15-25 mM) inhibited the phagocytosis of C3bi- or IgG-opsonized yeast particles, which was neither an osmotic effect nor an effect due to reduced binding of opsonized yeast particles to the neutrophils. Inhibition of protein kinase C (PKC) by GF109203X or Go6976 could completely reverse the inhibitory effect of 25 mM D-glucose on phagocytosis. Diacylglycerol (DAG) dose-dependently inhibited phagocytosis and suboptimal inhibitory concentrations of DAG and glucose showed an additive inhibitory effect. Elevated concentrations of insulin (80-160 μU/ml) also inhibited neutrophil phagocytosis, an effect shown in part to be due to a delayed phagocytosis process. Insulin was found to increase the accumulation of cortical F-actin, without affecting the total cellular F-actin content. The PKCalpha/beta inhibitor, Go6976, abolished the insulin-mediated increase in cortical F-actin content and both Go6976 and the PKCalpha/beta/delta/epsilon-specific inhibitor GF109203X reversed the inhibitory effects of insulin on phagocytosis. The inhibition of phagocytosis by either glucose or insulin resulted in an expected reduction of intracellular respiratory burst. However, the extracellular release of ROS during phagocytosis was increased by insulin, but inhibited by glucose. The ability of insulin to enhance ROS production was found to be F-actin dependent. Data suggests that glucose inhibited intracellular respiratory burst activation by interfering with intracellular signaling downstream of PKC activation, whereas extracellular release of ROS was inhibited by glucose upstream of PKC signaling. Taken together these results suggest that both hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia inhibit complement receptor and Fc receptor-mediated phagocytosis in human neutrophils. Insulin, but not glucose, also induced an enhanced extracellular release of ROS during phagocytosis. The combination of reduced phagocytosis and alterations in ROS production may possibly explain both the increased sensitivity to infections and tissue damage seen in type 2 diabetes.

Energy Calibration of Different Modes of a pn-CCD-camera on board the X-Ray Observatory XMM-Newton

The X-ray Multi-mirror Mission, XMM-Newton was launched by the European Space Agency, ESA, in 1999. XMM-Newton carries six cameras, including a silicon pn-junction Charge Coupled Device, or pn-CCD camera. This camera has six operating modes, spatially as well as time resolved. The main objective of this project is to refine the Burst mode energy correction in order to align the measured energy spectra observed in the Burst mode with the spectra taken in the Full Frame mode. An observation of the line-rich supernova remnant called Cassiopeia A is used to evaluate the line positions in each mode such that the energy correction function used for the alignment can be modified accordingly. The analysis further treats the application of the correction on a source with a continuous spectrum, the Crab nebula. Discussion shows how to reduce eventual residuals in the Crab spectrum by modifying the correction function while keeping the alignment of the Cas-A spectra. The final product is an update of the corresponding published calibration file.

Carrier Recovery in burst-mode 16-QAM

Wireless communication systems such as multipoint communication systems (MCS) are becoming attractive as cost-effective means for providing network access in sparsely populated, rugged, or developing areas of the world. Since the radio spectrum is limited, it is desirable to use spectrally efficient modulation methods such as quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) for high data rate channels. Many MCS employ time division multiple access (TDMA) and/or time division duplexing (TDD) techniques, in which transmissions operate in bursts. In many cases, a preamble of known symbols is appended to the beginning of each burst for carrier and symbol timing recovery (symbol timing is assumed known in this thesis). Preamble symbols consume bandwidth and power and are not used to convey information. In order for burst-mode communications to provide efficient data throughput, the synchronization time must be short compared to the user data portion of the burst. <p> Traditional methods of communication system synchronization such as phase-locked loops (PLLs) have demonstrated reduced performance when operated in burst-mode systems. In this thesis, a feedforward (FF) digital carrier recovery technique to achieve rapid carrier synchronization is proposed. The estimation algorithms for determining carrier offsets in carrier acquisition and tracking in a linear channel environment corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) are described. The estimation algorithms are derived based on the theory of maximum likelihood (ML) parameter estimation. The estimations include data-aided (DA) carrier frequency and phase estimations in acquisition and non-data-aided (NDA) carrier phase estimation in tracking. The DA carrier frequency and phase estimation algorithms are based on oversampling of a known preamble. The NDA carrier phase estimation makes use of symbol timing knowledge and estimates are extracted from the random data portion of the burst. The algorithms have been simulated and tested using Matlab® to verify their functionalities. The performance of these estimators is also evaluated in the burst-mode operations for 16-QAM and compared in the presence of non-ideal conditions (frequency offset, phase offset, and AWGN). The simulation results show that the carrier recovery techniques presented in this thesis proved to be applicable to the modulation schemes of 16-QAM. The simulations demonstrate that the techniques provide a fast carrier acquisition using a short preamble (about 111 symbols) and are suitable for burst-mode communication systems.

Offset time-emulated architecture for optical burst switching-modelling and performance evaluation

L'evolució de les xarxes publiques de transport de dades destaca per el continu augment de la demanda de tràfic a la que estan sotmeses. La causa és la imparable popularització d'Internet i del seu ús per a tot tipus d'aplicacions. Les xarxes de commutació de ràfegues òptiques (OBS: Optical Bursts Switching) són una solució extraordinàriament prometedora per la pròxima generació de xarxes, tant per la flexibilitat que ofereixen com per el seu alt rendiment fruit de l'explotació de la multiplexació estadística en el domini òptic.Aquesta tesi presenta l'anàlisi, modelització i avaluació de les xarxes de commutació de ràfegues òptiques basades en l'emulació del temps de compensació (emulated offset time: E-OBS). El concepte d'E-OBS defineix una arquitectura de xarxa OBS per al transportar i commutar ràfegues òptiques en una xarxa troncal en la que, al contrari de l'arquitectura convencional (C-OBS) en la que el temps de compensació s'introdueix des dels nodes d'accés, el temps de compensació s'introdueix en cadascun dels nodes de la xarxa per mitjà d'un retardador de fibra addicional. L'arquitectura E-OBS permet superar algunes de les desavantatges inherents a arquitectures C-OBS, però la seva gran virtut és la compatibilitat amb les xarxes de commutació de circuits òptics (OCS: Optical Circuit Switching) actuals i les futures xarxes de commutació de paquets òptics (OPS: Optical Packet Switching), de manera que les xarxes OBS basades en una arquitectura E-OBS) poden facilitat enormement la transició de unes a les altres.A ala vista dels principals requeriments de disseny de les xarxes OBS, que són la resolució de contencions en el domini òptic, la provisió de qualitat de servei (QoS) i l'òptim encaminament de les ràfegues per tal de minimitzar la congestió de la xarxa, . en aquesta tesi es proposa un disseny de l'arquitectura E-OBS basada en (i) un mètode viable per a la provisió del temps de compensació, (ii) una qualitat alta global de servei, i (iii) un mecanisme d'encaminament que minimitzi congestió de xarxa.- La primera part d'aquesta tesi proporciona la informació documental necessària per al disseny d'E-OBS.- La segona part se centra en l'estudi de la funcionalitat i viabilitat de l'arquitectura E-OBS. S'introdueixen els principis d'operació d'E-OBS i s'identifiquen els principals esculls que presenten les arquitectures C-OBS i que deixen de ser-ho en una arquitectura E-OBS. Alguns d'aquests esculls són la dificultat d'utilitzar un algorisme d'encaminament amb rutes alternatives, la complexitat dels algoritmes de reserva de recursos i la seva falta d'equitat, la complexitat en la provisió de la QoS, etc. En aquesta segona part es constata que l'arquitectura E-OBS redueix la complexitat dels de reserva de recursos i es verifica la viabilitat d'operació i de funcionament de la provisió del tremps de compensació en aquesta arquitectura a partir de figures de comportament obtingudes amb retardadors de fibra comercialment disponibles.- La tercera part encara el problema de la provisió de la QoS. Primer s'hi revisen els conceptes bàsics de QoS així com els mecanismes de tractament de la QoS per a xarxes OBS fent-ne una comparació qualitativa i de rendiment de tots ells. Com a resultat s'obté que el mecanisme que presenta un millor comportament és el d'avortament de la transmissió de les ràfegues de més baixa prioritat quan aquestes col·lisionen amb una de prioritat més alta (es l'anomenat Burst Preemption mechanism), el qual en alguns casos presenta un problema de senyalització innecessària. Aquesta tercera part es conclou amb la proposta d'un mecanisme de finestra a afegir al esquema de Burst Preemption que només funciona sobre una arquitectura E-OBS i que soluciona aquest problema.- En la quarta part s'afronta el problema de l'encaminament en xarxes OBS. S'estudia el comportament dels algoritmes d'encaminament adaptatius, els aïllats amb rutes alternatives i els multicamí distribuïts, sobre xarxes E-OBS. A la vista dels resultats no massa satisfactoris que s'obtenen, es planteja una solució alternativa que es basa en model d'optimització no lineal. Es formulen i resolen dos models d'optimització per als algoritmes encaminament de font multicamí que redueixen notablement la congestió en les xarxes OBS.Finalment, aquesta tesi conclou que l'arquitectura E-OBS és factible, que és més eficient que la C-OBS, que proveeix eficaçment QoS, i que és capaç d'operar amb diverses estratègies d'encaminament i de reduir eficaçment la congestió de xarxa. / The fact that the Internet is a packet-based connection-less network is the main driver to develop a data-centric transport network. In this context, the optical burst switching (OBS) technology is considered as a promising solution for reducing the gap between transmission and switching speeds in future networks.This thesis presents the analysis, modelling, and evaluation of the OBS network with Emulated offset-time provisioning (E-OBS). E-OBS defines an OBS network architecture to transport and switch optical data bursts in a core network. On the contrary to a conventional offset-time provisioning OBS (C-OBS) architecture, where a transmission offset time is introduced in the edge node, in an E-OBS network the offset time is provided in the core node by means of an additional fibre delay element. The architecture is motivated by several drawbacks inherent to C-OBS architectures. It should be pointed out that the E-OBS has not been studied intensively in the literature and this concept has been considered rather occasionally.Due to the limitations in optical processing and queuing, OBS networks need a special treatment so that they could solve problems typical of data-centric networks. Contention resolution in optical domain together with quality of service (QoS) provisioning for quality demanding services are, among other things, the main designing issues when developing OBS networks. Another important aspect is routing problem, which concerns effective balancing of traffic load so that to reduce burst congestion at overloaded links. Accounting for these requirements, the design objectives for the E-OBS architecture are (i) feasibility of offset-time provisioning, (ii) an overall high quality of service, and (iii) reduction of network congestion. These objectives are achieved by combining selected concepts and strategies, together with appropriate system design as well as network traffic engineering.The contributions in this thesis can be summarized as follows.- At the beginning, we introduce the principles of E-OBS operation and we demonstrate that C-OBS possesses many drawbacks that can be easily avoided in E-OBS. Some of the discussed issues are the problem of unfairness in resources reservation, difficulty with alternative routing, complexity of resources reservation algorithms, efficiency of burst scheduling, and complexity in QoS provisioning. The feasibility of E-OBS operation is investigated as well; in this context, the impact of congestion in control plane on OBS operation is studied. As a result, we confirm the feasibility of E-OBS operation with commercially available fibre delay elements.- Then, we provide both qualitative and quantitative comparison of the selected, most addressed in the literature, QoS mechanisms. As an outcome a burst preemption mechanism, which is characterized by the highest overall performance, is qualified for operating in E-OBS. Since the preemptive mechanism may produce the overbooking of resources in an OBS network we address this issue as well. We propose the preemption window mechanism to solve the problem. An analytical model of the mechanism legitimates correctness of our solution.- Finally, we concern with a routing problem - our routing objective is to help the contention resolution algorithms in the reduction of burst losses. We propose and evaluate two isolated alternative routing algorithms designed for labelled E-OBS networks. Then we study multi-path source routing and we use network optimization theory to improve it. The presented formulae for partial derivatives, to be used in a non-linear optimization problem, are straightforward and very fast to compute. It makes the proposed non-linear optimization method a viable alternative for linear programming formulations based on piecewise linear approximations.Concluding, E-OBS is shown to be a feasible OBS network architecture of profitable functionality, to support efficiently the QoS provisioning, and to be able to operate with different routing strategies and effectively reduce the network congestion.

Transport Control Protocol (TCP) over Optical Burst Switched Networks

Transport Control Protocol (TCP) is the dominant protocol in modern communication networks, in which the issues of reliability, flow, and congestion control must be handled efficiently. This thesis studies the impact of the next-generation bufferless optical burst-switched (OBS) networks on the performance of TCP congestion-control implementations (i.e., dropping-based, explicit-notification-based, and delay-based). The burst contention phenomenon caused by the buffer-less nature of OBS occurs randomly and has a negative impact on dropping-based TCP since it causes a false indication of network congestion that leads to improper reaction on a burst drop event. In this thesis we study the impact of these random burst losses on dropping-based TCP throughput. We introduce a novel congestion control scheme for TCP over OBS networks, called Statistical Additive Increase Multiplicative Decrease (SAIMD). SAIMD maintains and analyzes a number of previous round trip times (RTTs) at the TCP senders in order to identify the confidence with which a packet-loss event is due to network congestion. The confidence is derived by positioning short-term RTT in the spectrum of long-term historical RTTs. The derived confidence corresponding to the packet loss is then taken in to account by the policy developed for TCP congestion-window adjustment. For explicit-notification TCP, we propose a new TCP implementation over OBS networks, called TCP with Explicit Burst Loss Contention Notification (TCP-BCL). We examine the throughput performance of a number of representative TCP implementations over OBS networks, and analyze the TCP performance degradation due to the misinterpretation of timeout and packet-loss events. We also demonstrate that the proposed TCP-BCL scheme can counter the negative effect of OBS burst losses and is superior to conventional TCP architectures in OBS networks. For delay-based TCP, we observe that this type of TCP implementation cannot detect network congestion when deployed over typical OBS networks since RTT fluctuations are minor. Also, delay-based TCP can suffer from falsely detecting network congestion when the underlying OBS network provides burst retransmission and/or deflection. Due to the fact that burst retransmission and deflection schemes introduce additional delays for bursts that are retransmitted or deflected, TCP cannot determine whether this sudden delay is due to network congestion or simply to burst recovery at the OBS layer. In this thesis we study the behaviour of delay-based TCP Vegas over OBS networks, and propose a version of threshold-based TCP Vegas that is suitable for the characteristics of OBS networks. The threshold-based TCP Vegas is able to distinguish increases in packet delay due to network congestion from burst contention at low traffic loads. The evolution of OBS technology is highly coupled with its ability to support upper-layer applications. Without fully understanding the burst transmission behaviour and the associated impact on the TCP congestion-control mechanism, it will be difficult to exploit the advantages of OBS networks fully.
