Unexpected Turbulence: An Event Study of President Obama's June 29, 2011 Press Conference and Its Effect on Aircraft Manufacturers

On June 29, 2011, President Barack Obama held a press conference regarding the nation's budget deficit. During the conference, President Obama mentioned corporate jet owners six times, criticizing their desire to maintain an accelerated depreciation tax break. The President's comments were met with strong criticism from aircraft manufacturers and members of the aviation community. Based on the underlying assumption that new information is rapidly incorporated into stock prices, the press conference likely had a negative impact on the stock returns of aircraft and aircraft parts manufacturers. This paper uses a financial events study to determine whether or not the press conference significantly hurt the stock prices of aircraft manufacturers.

Estudo do mercado de jatos executivos no Brasil / Study of business jetsmarket in Brazil

A primeira opção de viagem por avião se dá por meio dos voos oferecidos pela aviação comercial. Nos últimos anos, o crescimento do número de passageiros no Brasil superou o crescimento do número de aeronaves disponíveis para voos comerciais, gerando efeitos inconvenientes aos usuários desse segmento de transporte. De outro lado, a aviação executiva surge como opção para diminuir estes inconvenientes. Este segmento oferece vantagens como a diminuição dos tempos de embarque e desembarque e o acesso a um maior número de destinos, resultando numa melhor utilização do tempo dos executivos das empresas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o mercado de jatos executivos no Brasil quanto à sua caracterização e a relação entre o índice do valor da frota e o PIB brasileiro entre os anos 2000 e 2013.Como método, foram estudados os aspectos qualitativos e quantitativos referentes a este mercado, utilizando-se de pesquisa a fontes primárias e entrevistas com profissionais atuantes nesse mercado. Foi realizado um estudo quantitativo para estudar uma relação entre o índice do valor da frota de jatos executivos e o índice da variação do PIB brasileiro. Conclui-se que os empresários são os maiores usuários dos jatos executivos, e adquirem este tipo de produto para se locomoverem a um número maior de regiões do território nacional com a finalidade de ampliar seus negócios. O crescimento da frota foi impulsionado por jatos leves, categoria que apresentou uma maior aceitação pelos clientes brasileiros. O estudo econométrico revelou que há correlação positiva entre o valor da frota de jatos executivos com o PIB brasileiro. / The first option to travel by airplane is through commercial aviation. In the last few years, the growth in the number of passengers in Brazil has overcome the number of available airplanes for commercial flights, resulting in inconvenient effects to users of this segment of transport. On the other hand, business aviation arises as an option to diminish their convenient. This transports segment offers some advantages, as the reduction of boarding and landing times and the access to a larger number of destinations, resulting in a better use of the time of companies executives. To study the characteristics of the Brazilian market of executive jets, the objective of this research was to study the business jets market in Brazil regarding its characterization and the relation between the fleet value index and the Brazilian GDP between the years 2000 and 2013. In the method, qualitative and quantitative aspects were studied related to the business jets markets in Brazil, using primary sources research and interviews with professionals actuating in this market. A quantitative test was conducted to study a possible relation between the variation of business jets fleet in operation in Brazil and the variation of Brazilian gross domestic product. Conclusions showed that businesspersons are the main users of business jets, and they acquire this type of product to be able to access more regions in the national territory with the aim to spread their business. Light jets drove the fleet growth, category that showed the best acceptance by Brazilian customers. The econometric study revealed that there is a positive correlation between the jet fleet values with Brazilian GDP.

When Flying is Inevitable : How international companies and business travelers can contribute to the transformation towards a future of sustainable aviation / När det är oundvikligt att flyga : Hur internationella företag och affärsresande kan bidra till transformationen av en framtid inom hållbar flygindustri

This thesis emerged from a question that had been repeating itself in my head for a long period of time: If myself and the rest of the world face the fact that we are likely to keep flying for years to come for reasons somehow considered valid, how can we at the same time still contribute efficiently to achieving a more sustainable future of aviation? Based on this dilemma and focusing on the factor of impact, an actor with the power of creating a larger impact than a single individual was firstly identified. This actor also provides the perspective used in this thesis. Meaning, the perspective of international companies that rely on flying for business for the purpose of surviving and thriving. The report’s purpose is to explore the opportunities and barriers for these companies with a will to contribute to the transformation to a future of sustainable aviation. The criteria of this company category are being both “international” and also “dependent” on business aviation. The term "international" in this context will later be defined and clarified, just as the definition of "dependent". Furthermore, this thesis is written based on an abductive literature study combined with a case study of an anonymous company located in Zürich, Switzerland. The Companyis included in the above category and could validate the hypothesis that companies like these exist through a series of interviews with employees.The validation of this hypothesis also paved the way to further explore the research questions on how these companies as customers can work both internally and externally with other stakeholders to enhance a Demand-Pull effect towards a more sustainable direction. It also discusses the Technology-Push effect from other stakeholders and its role in driving sustainable innovation development and implementation in technologies such as SAF, hydrogen and electric aviation. How to contribute to this large shift of an entire industry as a company that neither has expertise in sustainability nor aviation is exactly what is presented in the result, discussion and conclusion. Also, the possible consequences for a business and its employees that can follow by being involved and contribute to aviation sustainability. In addition, a mapping of awareness, knowledge gaps, motivation, and incentives has been done in order to identify the barriers and opportunities of the issue. / Detta arbete härstammar från en fråga som upprepat sig i mitt huvud under en längre tid: Om jag och resten av världen står inför det faktum att vi sannolikt kommer att fortsätta flyga i flera år framöver av skäl som på något sätt anses giltiga, hur kan vi samtidigt fortfarande bidra effektivt till att uppnå en mer hållbar framtid för flygindustrin? Utifrån detta dilemma och med fokus på hur man kan påverka som mest, identifierades först en aktör med kraften att skapa ett större genomslag än en enskild individ. Denna aktör bidrar också med det perspektiv som används i denna rapport. Det vill säga, perspektivet av internationella företag som är beroende av att flyga i affärssyfte för att överleva och växa. Syftet med rapporten är att utforska möjligheter och hinder för dessa företag med en vilja att bidra till omvandlingen till en framtid för hållbart flyg. Kriterierna för denna företagskategori är att vara både "internationell" och även "beroende" av affärsflyg. Termen "internationell" i detta sammanhang kommer senare att definieras och förtydligas, precis som definitionen av "beroende". Vidare är denna uppsats skriven baserat på en abduktiv litteraturstudie kombinerad med en fallstudie av ett anonymt företag beläget i Zürich, Schweiz. Företaget ingår i ovan nämnda kategori och kan därmed validera hypotesen att företag som dessa existerar genom en serie intervjuer utförda med anställda. Valideringen av denna hypotes banade också vägen för att ytterligare utforska frågeställningen om hur dessa företag som kunder kan arbeta både internt och externt med andra intressenter för att förstärka en Demand-Pull-effekt mot en mer hållbar riktning. Rapporten diskuterar också Technology-Push-effekten från andra intressenter och dess roll i att driva hållbar innovationsutveckling och implementering inom teknologier som SAF, vätgas och elflyg. Hur ett företag kan bidra till detta stora skifte av en hel bransch utan kompetens inom hållbarhet eller flyg är precis vad som presenteras i resultat, diskussion och slutsats. Även de möjliga konsekvenserna för ett företag och dess anställda som kan följa genom att vara delaktiga och bidra till flygindustrins hållbarhet. Slutligen, har en kartläggning av medvetenhet, kunskapsluckor, motivation och incitament gjorts i syfte att identifiera var möjliga hinder och möjligheter finns.

Zavedení a provoz supersonického business jetu / Launching and Operating Issues of Supersonic Business Jet

Tato práce se zabývá problematikou zavedení a provozu nadzvukových business jetů. V dnešní době se v civilní letecké přepravě, po ukončení provozu Concordu, žádná nadzvuková letadla nevyskytují. V dnešní době existuje mnoho projektů a organizací, které se zabývají znovuzavedením nadzvukových letounů do civilního letectví a soustředí se převážně na business jety. Hlavní otázkou je, zda je vůbec vhodné, či rozumné se k tomu typu dopravy znovu vracet. Existuje hodně problémů, které toto komplikují. Tyto letouny způsobují příliš velký hluk, mají obrovskou spotřebu paliva a musí řešit nadměrné emise, létají ve vysokých výškách ve kterých může docházet k problémům s přetlakováním kabiny, navigací, radioaktivním zářením apod. Navíc zákaz supersonických letů nad pevninou letové cesty omezuje a prodlužuje. Současně vznikající projekty navíc nedosahují tak velkého doletu jako klasické moderní bussjety, což způsobuje, že se nadzvukové business jety se na delších tratích stávají neefektivní. I přes tyto problémy, je víceméně jisté, že k zavedení nadzvukových business jetů dojde během následujících 10 - 15 let, i kdyby to měla být jen otázka jisté prestiže velmi bohatých lidí.
