Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are mucopolisacarides usually eliminated in urine. The altered excretion of these substances is related to occurrence of systemic or urinary diseases. Among them, interstitial cystitis, which physiopatogenesis has not been elucidated yet, is observed mainly in humans, and felines, that present similar signs, have been considered the best model for study of this illness. Considering that GAGs may be involved with disease mechanisms, the standardization of methods to measure mucopolissacarides in feline urine, as the establishment of reference values for the species, are very important. Twelve healthy kittens were studied, from 30 to 114 days old, and specimens of urine were collected every 28 days for quantification of GAGs. Four colorimetric methods were analyzed, in order to find the most sensible, cheap and reproducible for dosage. The selected method, that employs dimethylmethylene blue (DMB) with sodium acetate buffer and standard with chondroitin C sulfate, was modified with regard to the volume of urine employed, reading time of the tests, and dispense of urine centrifugation. Values were significantly higher at ages 30 and 58 days old when compared to those observed at subsequent ages (86 and 114 days), revealing decline of these substance quantities in feline urine on this age interval.

Fearful to Friendly (F2F): a Constructional Fear Treatment for Domestic Cats Using a Negative Reinforcement Shaping Procedure in a Home SettingRentfro, Angela Drake 08 1900 (has links)
Feral and fearful cats and kittens in animal shelters are not likely to be adopted as companion animals because they emit fearful or aggressive behaviors in the presence of humans. The purpose of the fearful to friendly (F2F) research was to investigate a shaping procedure to increase friendly behaviors of feral and fearful domestic cats and kittens with the goal of achieving animal shelters’ adoptability criteria. The results showed the F2F procedure was a safe and very effective procedure to quickly tame feral kittens deemed unadoptable. The day after implementing F2F, three out of four kittens approached me and accepted petting and holding without any additional training.

The existence of metrics of nonpositive curvature on the Brady-Krammer complexes for finite-type Artin groupsChoi, Woonjung 29 August 2005 (has links)
My dissertation focuses on the existence of metrics of non-positive curvature for the simplicial complexes constructed recently by Tom Brady and Daan Krammer for the braid groups and other Artin groups of finite type. In particular, for each Artin group of finite type, there is a recently constructed finite simplicial Eilenberg-Mac Lane space known as its Brady-Krammer complex. The Brady-Krammer complexes are highly symmetric objects. Prior work on the relationship between the Brady-Krammer complexes and the theory of CAT(0)spaces has produced some positive results in low-dimensions. More specifically, the Brady-Krammer complexes of dimension at most 3 have been shown to support piecewise Euclidean metrics of non-positive curvature. Similarly, the 4dimensional Brady-Krammer complexes of type A4 and type B4 also support such metrics. In every instance, the metrics assigned respect all of the symmetries alluded to above. The main results of my dissertation show that this pattern does not extend to the Brady-Krammer complexes of type F4 and D4. These are the first negative results known about the curvature of these Brady-Krammer complexes. The proofs of my main theorems involve a combination of combinatorial results and computer calculations. These negative results are particularly striking since Ruth Charney, John Meier and Kim Whittlesey have shown that a particular complex closely related to each Brady-Krammer complex admits an asymmetric metric satisfying a weak version of non-positive curvature. Thus, one corollary of my results is that the weak asymmetric version of a CAT(0) metric (initially defined by Mladen Bestvina) is strictly weaker than the traditional version.

Kattifiering : Anpassa ditt hem för kattenLööv, Ofelia January 2018 (has links)
The cat is among the most popular pets in Sweden and having an indoor cat has become more common. A cat has many needs. For example, they need to be activated through play and allowed to sharpen their claws by scratching since these are major aspects in their nature. Activating your cat is an important part of their everyday life and to prevent them from obtaining unwanted behaviours, such as scratching their owner. However, satisfying the needs of a cat can become a di cult task and problematic for cat owners living more cramped home accommodations. Therefore, my focus has been to develop an alternate concept of a scratching post that also suits cat owners living in smaller homes. Larger scratching posts on today’s market often require considerable space on the oor, which can be a problem if you have a small home. It has become common for cat owners to construct their own scratching posts today, but that can be rather time consuming and thus often not desirable. During the course of my project, I have interviewed multiple cat owners and found a need for a larger scratching post that blends into the ordinary household. A survey was submitted onto various cat forums where the response clearly showed that cat owners found value in the concepts where they themselves could utilise the scratching post. Thus, I combined a scratching post with a typical type of furniture you often see in the ordinary household, one that can be used by both cat and cat owner.
