No. of bitstreams: 1 Leandro Nhoncance.pdf: 1122912 bytes, checksum: 1f1ae715e54b357ac747e3a2fecf691b (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-10-05 / The theme of this research arose during observations made in the classroom, and also after attending classes in TIC ( Information and Communication Technology) in the course for Professional Master s Degree at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica if São Paulo. The aim of the work is to relate mathematics classes with the technology presente in the daily lives of our students. It proposes a sequence of activities which would help and lead tothe pupils obtaining the natural rest of an inexact division with the calculator. The euclidian division is a procedure that makes it easier for pupils to find the natural rest working with the calculator of their mobile phones. In this research we performed a study with a group of fifteen pupils in the senior high school of a state school. We worked with diagnosis an intervention. The data collected were analyzed in the light of some presppositions of Didactic Engineering, and while the activities were being carried out, we realized that the difficulties of some students in regard to the operation of division, especially and to obtain the natural rest, appeared when they had to work with the calculator with natural numbers. However, these difficulties were decreased with the sequence of activities proposed. This work contributed to the students learning and showed that the calculator is a worthy ally in the educational process in addition to recovering some concepts about division of natural numbers. It taught the pupils to work with the calculator in the universe of natural numbers and to obtain the rest in an operation of inexact division / A proposta desta pesquisa surgiu durante várias observações feitas em sala de aula e; também, após cursar a disciplina de TIC (Tecnologia da Informação e Comunicação) no curso de Mestrado Profissional da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo.

The entrepreneurial capital of SMEs and business compliance in New Zealand : a study of the relationship : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Public Policy at Massey University, Albany, New Zealand

de Bruin-Judge, Robyn Leigh Unknown Date (has links)
Despite New Zealand receiving the number one ranking for ease of doing business in a major international comparative survey of compliance requirements, SME owners continue to rate compliance as a significant concern. This research project set out to investigate why this was so. The qualitative research undertaken for this thesis involved case study interviews with six SME owners. A resource-based approach was taken, looking at the resources SME owners needed to address the compliance task, and how they sourced and applied these. The scope of the study extended beyond the confines of the workplace to encompass the impact of compliance on the personal lives of SME owners and their families. Firkin’s model of entrepreneurial capital was applied and extended. Accordingly, the study encompassed an examination of economic, human, social, cultural and personal capital. An original concept, temporal capital, was developed to address the application of ‘potentially productive time’ as a resource. The findings are applied to a discussion of the Quality Regulation Review currently underway in New Zealand. It is recommended that SME issues could be more comprehensively addressed by incorporating screens within the Business Cost Calculator that estimate the relative psychic and opportunity costs associated with proposed regulations. A gender analysis of the compliance task was also undertaken. This revealed that the impact of compliance measures may be disproportionately borne by those whose business and personal lives are intertwined, primarily women. The invisibility of these workers has contributed to their needs being inadequately addressed by traditional processes of consultation and data analysis. The thesis concludes that it is not the regulatory regime alone that determines ease of doing business. It is the match between the requirements of the regime and the compliance-related entrepreneurial capital accessible to those subject to it. Recommendations relate therefore, to improving both the institutional capital of the regulator and the compliance-related entrepreneurial capital accessible to the SME.

Modeling as a Tool to Support Self-Management of Type 1 Diabetes

Bergenholm, Linnéa January 2013 (has links)
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an auto-immune disease characterized by insulin-deficiency. Insulin is a metabolic hormone that is involved in lowering blood glucose (BG) levels in order to control BG level to a tight range. In T1D this glycemic control is lost, causing chronic hyperglycemia (excess glucose in blood stream). Chronic hyperglycemia damages vital tissues. Therefore, glycemic control must be restored. A common therapy for restoring glycemic control is intensive insulin therapy, where the missing insulin is replaced with regular insulin injections. When dosing this compensatory insulin many factors that affect glucose metabolism must be considered. Linkura is a company that has developed tools for monitoring the most important factors, which are meals and exercise. In the Linkura meal and exercise tools, the nutrition content in meals and the calorie consumption during exercise are estimated. Another tool designed to aid control of BG is the bolus calculator. Bolus calculators use input of BG level, carbohydrate intake, and insulin history to estimate insulin need. The accuracy of these insulin bolus calculations suffer from two problems. First, errors occur when users inaccurately estimate the carbohydrate content in meals. Second, exercise is not included in bolus calculations. To reduce these problems, it was suggested that the Linkura web tools could be utilized in combination with a bolus calculator. For this purpose, a bolus calculator was developed. The bolus calculator was based on existing models that utilize clinical parameters to relate changes in BG levels to meals, insulin, and exercise stimulations. The bolus calculator was evaluated using data collected from Linkura's web tools. The collected data showed some inconsistencies which cannot be explained by any model.  The performance of the bolus calculator in predicting BG levels using general equations to derive the clinical parameters was inadequate. Performance was increased by adopting an update-algorithm where the clinical parameters were updated daily using previous data. Still, better model performance is prefered for use in a bolus calculator.   The results show potential in developing bolus calculator tools combined with the Linkura tools. For such bolus calculator, further evaluation on modeling long-term exercise and additional safety features minimizing risk of hypoglycemia are required.

Made available in DSpace on 2016-06-02T20:02:51Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 4860.pdf: 5242866 bytes, checksum: 5e92d592a327abbd0f89da2dbf416582 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-03-26 / The difficulty of students in learning concepts of mathematics especially at high schools is current problem in Brazilian schools. This difficulty is a challenge even bigger as the different high school systems are considered, for example, the technical professional high schools. Such challenge for two classrooms of first grade (10th grade in K-12) of a technical course in environmental studies motivated the proposal of this dissertation. The research work explored a teaching methodology of the concept of function that would show to the student the importance of this concept in a technical course, while offering an opportunity to know about the mathematics modeling that uses functions, especially those from school curriculum. The final results of this dissertation consisted of working sheets that were planned, executed and evaluated in two classrooms. The worksheets are formatted so that they can be used by teachers who share the same challenge and interest in developing research to improve the teaching/learning mathematics at high - school level. The proposed activities are based on mathematics modeling of problems in the context of the students course, and on the educational use of a graphic calculator to construct tables, graphs and regression curves. The official documents from Ministry of Education (MEC) about curriculum standards and some theoretical references have been used for our reflections about the differences between traditional teaching style and new educational trends, and about the potential of technology to improve the learning. The work presents also a study of the concept of function that supported the planning of the proposed classroom activities.

Interactive tools supporting agriculture in the wine industry

Claassen, Hester January 2012 (has links)
Thesis (MTech(Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2012 / To design from a human perspective rather than from existing technological opportunities, and involving multiple stakeholders with their different perspectives, is an important aspect of participatory design and user-centered design. This thesis project was an explorative study done on a wine estate, in the Western Cape, South Africa, to find novel ICT solutions, for supporting co-operation and planning between multiple and individual work tasks in the work practice. This research explored potentials to manage multiple stakeholders and use their different perspectives to inform design research. The thesis project shows the ethnographic research gathered through video shadowing, workshop results involving the users to contribute to the development of the design by acting with a projection, leading up to a design opening and further focused on the concept development with the stakeholders. The thesis proposes a simulated concept namely the Visual Calculator (VC). This system is designed to involve several participators within a work practice. It supports calculation activities for spraying and buying chemicals. It saves the user time by incorporating standard calculations to output needed information faster. It supports planning, management and record keeping aspects of the farm manager’s work practice in the vineyard spraying process. Although the concept was more fully developed for the farm manager, the VC involves two other work roles including the owner and foreman. The concept focuses on a human centered perspective, instead of making the system fully automated, giving users control and not controlling the users. For this to be successful work should be divided and have equal responsibilities, each stakeholder can contribute and value their part of the work, knowing where it fits in, why it is important and how it influences other aspects of the work practice. The research outcome involves, envisioning the future potentials of the design (VC), design for participation, a way to identify design openings, problem solving and conceptualizing by utilizing user’s strengths.

Lima, Ivana Silva Santos 15 April 2013 (has links)
This paper shows the results of a research whose objective was to investigate how the mathematic teachers of the Statewide Network in Aracaju use the computer and calculator to approach mathematical contents. Thus initially, fourteen public schools of the state were selected, located in five geographic areas of Aracaju which have computer labs installed by ProInfo National Program of Educational Technology. From each of these schools were selected two mathematic teachers, one from elementary school and another from high school to be interviewed. Theoretical contributions of authors were adopted like Fedalto (2006), Carneiro (2008), Borba and Hairstyle (2010) and Canavarro (1993) to analyze the types of uses that teachers make of the calculator and the computer, D´Ambrosio (1989) to identify possibilities on "how" to teach Mathematics, and Lorenzato and Fiorentini (2006) for the understanding about Mathematic Education. Based on twenty-seven semistructured interviews and on the readings made it is possible to say that most teachers use the computer and calculator to teach mathematical contents, and these instruments are predominantly used as resources. Since computer use occurs in two forms, only by the teacher to expose some content or, by him and by students when after approaching the contents softwares are used to prove the theory. The main reason for this usage is due to the understanding that the computer is a tool for motivation. While the calculator is used mostly as a tool to perform calculations in order to expedite the resolution of accounts, check results, perform complex calculations accurately and less frequently it is used as a research tool.
