An Education Index for the California Education Code of 1949

Ray, Herndon Carroll 01 January 1951 (has links) (PDF)
Some knowledge of the California School Law is presumed to be a part of the professional training of every teacher. A specific course in State School Administration and School Law in a prerequisite to the securing of an Administration Credential. The courses offered and the resultant use of the Education Code are not enough to make members of the teaching profession conversant with the many and varied aspects of legal restrictions and permissions concerning the California School System. The ordinary layman who has not had even the basis training in legal knowledge is even more inept at finding the law. Those who use the Code, therefore, find it necessary to search the Index of the Education Code in hope of finding the answer to the question confront- ing them. Few people who use the Education Code are so well versed in the law that they can find the information they seek without the help of and regular use of an Index. The Index, then, becomes a necessary tool for teachers and others in the field of Education.

Tannin Content of Certain California Eucalyptus Trees

Stringari, Lawrence 01 January 1953 (has links) (PDF)
Taken from Discussion and Summary: This investigation explores the potentialities of the bark, wood, leaves, and capsules of the Eucalyptus, Tasmanian Blue (Globulus), Longbeak (Teritocornis), Red-Ironbark (Sideroxylon), and Longbeak (Rostrata), as a domestic source of tannin. The trees were identified by Dr. Ernest E. Stanford, Professor of Botany, College of the Pacific. Results are based on hot plate dried weights and are recorded in the following Tables and Figures. Trees were chosen from the local area, Stockton, California, and from Tracy, California, to determine significant variations between localities. Analysis of the extracts followed the official methods of the American Chemists Association (1946) with no exceptions.

A semester course in motor safety for California high schools

Barron, Beverly Crocker 01 January 1941 (has links) (PDF)
The need for developing proper habits, attitudes, and skills on the part of motorists is being continually and convincingly impressed on the public mind by the tremendous daily accident toll. Great strides have been made in engineering, both with respect to the construction of motor vehicles and the construction of highways. Traffic law enforcement agencies have become increasingly effective in recent years. Both good engineering and proper law enforcement are necessary, but to secure a very appreciable reduction in traffic accidents authorities are agreed that there must be an effective driver-education program. There have been many analysis of the causes of traffic accidents and all of them clearly indicate that human factors--wrong attitudes, bad habits, lack of skill, and ignorance--account for the majority of accidents. Certainly education must play the major role in any program which aims to eradicate these causes. Good driving is far from an instinctive accomplishment. It must be learned through close application, constant practice, and perhaps most important, a sincere desire to be a good driver A systematic plan of driver education should not only prepare students to drive safely, but should imbue them with a sense of their responsibilities as pedestrians and, by giving them an understanding of the purpose behind traffic laws, develop into a willingness to observe traffic rules and regulations. Driving training schools and traffic courses are being given in many of our secondary schools today as a vital answer to the growing need "teaching by experience those who are about to take their place on the 'open highway'." Driver education and driver training do not rest entirely upon the need for better mechanical operation of motor cars. It is not enough to each a student merely how to manipulate a vehicle. Other habits, are just as important. Courtesy on the highway is of the same nature as courtesy anywhere, and, cultivated in one sphere of activity, tends to carry over into other spheres. The same can be said for respect for law and order, good sportsmanship, and all the other desirable attitudes which these courses foster. The main purpose of safety education is to teach people what knowledge is necessary to prevent accidents, to develop the skills and habits necessary to make this knowledge of safety function automatically in emergencies, and equally important to develop attitudes and appreciations of importance in safe driving.

A study of the Chinese language immersion program in San Francisco: The first two years

Tang, Winifred Sin Ling 01 January 1988 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine the factors important to the establishment of a Chinese language immersion program in San Francisco, parent motivations and attitudes toward the program, and the impact of the program on student achievement. Descriptive data collected on the 1st and 2nd year of program implementation included summaries of interviews with school personnel, information from documents of the San Francisco Unified School District, tabulations of parent questionnaire responses, and scores from a kindergarten skills inventory and Cantonese Language Skills Test. The comparative portion of the study included an analysis of CTBS-S scores of the program participants and a comparable group of students. The District implemented the Chinese immersion program because of the prior success of a Spanish immersion program, and the influence of a group of parents who were highly interested, organized and motivated. The Chinese immersion program is basically patterned after the Canadian early total immersion model. Both programs were initiated by parents. The major differences from the Canadian model were the ethnic and linguistic composition of students and the timing of introduction of English instruction. Parents enrolled their children in the Chinese immersion program because of a desire for their children to better understand and respect their own and others' cultural and linguistic heritages. Parents were highly satisfied with all aspects of the program. Program participants acquired Cantonese proficiency and literacy skills while developing and maintaining English academic skills. Further research is necessary to address the long term effects of the Chinese immersion program on participants' English academic skills, English language development, Chinese fluency and literacy, and their appreciation of multiculturalism and multilingualism.
