This thesis examines the role of “the frolic” in Frances Burney’s Camilla. Frolics take the form of light-hearted pranks centered on ritualized public humiliation; they are comically framed and particularly painful, encouraging a discussion about the ethics of laughter and the dynamics of power operating in both Camilla and Burney’s world. The purpose of this study is twofold: firstly, this project seeks to qualify current emphasis on politeness in the eighteenth century by tracing a history of violent comedy, engaging with jestbook humour, print culture, conduct literature and theorists such as Fielding, Hobbes, Smith and Locke. This study suggests that Camilla responds to popular debates about laughter and propriety, pushing the boundaries of comic acceptability with violent pranks and the use of animal and deformity humour. Secondly, this study explores the structure of the frolic itself, its function as a system of domination and control. The prankster, a socially transgressive figure able to displace the rules governing propriety through a prank, is also a social tyrant – seizing complete control over others, causing humiliation and shame. The frolic is based on plotting, secrecy, deception and public exposure, and Burney aligns the prankster with other transgressive figures in the novel, such as guardians and mentors, who exert the same type of power over the vulnerable and the weak. Burney’s pranks bring as much pain as they do laughter, becoming an important satiric device that explores both the politics of laughter and the social forces at work in her novel. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

This essay investigates how silence is used as a way to speak about, and give presence to what cannot be named; the female homosexuality and the lesbian. The analysis consists of three texts that are reoccurring in Swedish literature research about Karin Boye, Swedish modernist, her person and writings. By using close reading as a method, I investigate how the three texts corresponds with words connected to female homosexuality, focusing on lesbianism. By placing the lesbian as the first, and not the Other, I investigate how lesbianism is present in the three texts, and how they read and use silence as a frame for talking about what cannot be named. I use queer theory as a springboard for claiming this lesbian presence. My aim with this essay is to show how lesbianism can be read even without the explicit use of certain words, and by doing so, showing how it is not just a well of loneliness.

<p>Bakgrund</p><p>Under de senaste åren har en rad bolagsskandaler uppdagats, vilket har intensifierat diskussionerna kring corporate governance- och revisionsrelaterade frågor. I Sverige ska revisorn granska såväl bolagets årsredovisning och bokföring som styrelsens och verkställande direktörens förvaltning. Det lagstadgade kravet att granska förvaltningen av bolaget återfinns inte i något annat land, med undantag av Finland. Vilken innebörd förvaltningsrevisionen har är dock inte tydligt definierad i lagen och frågan är även huruvida den svenska förvaltningsrevisionen har någon framtid i den alltmer internationaliserade värld som revisorn arbetar i.</p><p>Syfte</p><p>Uppsatsens syfte är att beskriva och analysera den svenska</p><p>förvaltningsrevisionens innebörd, de historiska orsakerna till varför</p><p>förvaltningsrevisionen ser ut som den gör idag samt utreda vilken framtid den går till mötes. Inom ramen för syftet kommer följande frågor att besvaras:</p><p>· Vilka är de historiska orsakerna inom revisionsområdet till varför det idag hör till den svenska revisorns uppgifter att granska företagets förvaltning och vilken innebörd har förvaltningsrevisionen?</p><p>· Hur kan EU:s harmoniseringsarbete inom såväl revisions- som corporate governance-området komma att påverka den svenska förvaltningsrevisionens framtid?</p><p>Genomförande</p><p>Studien har genomförts med hjälp av 10 stycken expertintervjuer med såväl svenska som utländska respondenter, samt en enkätundersökning utskickad till 73 stycken godkända eller auktoriserade revisorer i Linköping och Stockholm.</p><p>Resultat</p><p>Den svenska förvaltningsrevisionen har en stark tradition och har formats genom ett antal tydliga ställningstaganden, där Sverige exempelvis har tagit avstånd från införandet av ytterligare ett kontrollorgan i corporate governance-strukturen. Vad gäller förvaltningsrevisionens innebörd råder det inget tvivel om dess mål; ett till- eller avstyrkande av ansvarsfrihet. Vägen dit är dock något oklar. EU:s harmoniseringsarbetet kan komma att få följande konsekvenser för den svenska förvaltningsrevisionen: (1) Att den måste tas bort till följd av en fullständig harmonisering, (2) att den genom möjlighet till särregler kan behållas i sin nuvarande form samt (3) att den kan behållas, men med en något annorlunda utformning.</p>

This thesis seeks to portray how an objectifying intra-diegetic gaze influences and constructs the plot devices Frances Burney uses in her four novels: Evelina, Cecilia, Camilla, and The Wanderer. Burney creates a literary reality within her four novels’ narratives and breaks that reality down with the influence of the gazes and judgments of her novels’ characters upon each of her heroines. The gaze is an almost microscopic examination that objectifies and depersonalizes all of Burney’s heroines. Burney shows how the gaze shifts perspectives and manipulates that which it objectifies. Burney places her audience and her heroines into unfamiliar situations and then she shows the costs and benefits of reasserting one’s gaze. This thesis will show how Burney portrays the power of objectification in her novels upon her heroines, and the consequences that arise from the tensions of bombarding social gazes in all their duplicitous forms.

This essay will explain some of the key concepts of my theoretical interests in my artistic practice and point out how these are adapted in my recent work, the Satumaa triology. The trilogy consists of films concerning my own status as a Swedish speaking Finn and the history of processes of exclusion in a national community, in this particular case Finland. These processes are in my home country working both outside and within the national borders and are parallel to the French structuralist Michel Foucault’s investigations of a discourse.

En genusteoretisk stickprovskontroll. Uppsatsen genomlyser Camilla Grebes Älskaren från huvudkontoret ur ett genusteoretiskt perspektiv med focus på Luce Irigaray teorier. Inledningsvis presenteras Luce Irigaray övergripande och hennes arbete ställs i relation till Simone de Beauvoirs. Irigarays teorier om maskulint och feminint subjekt gås igenom och teoridelen avslutas med ett destillat av teorierna här kallat; typiska drag. Utifrån dessa typiska drag analyseras delar, utvalda med heuristisk metod, av Camilla Grebes roman Älskaren från huvudkontoret från 2015. I analysen diskuteras utöver undersökningen och de presenterade teorierna även paralleller till Janice Radways Kvinnor läser romantik: om samspelet mellan text och kontext. Resultaten av undersökningen och slutsatsen diskuteras och ifrågasätts. / <p>--</p>
