Engendering the rock art archaeology of the north Eastern Cape, South Africa Ritual specialists, novices, and social conditioningGreen, Dawn 01 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Zulu and Xhosa / Rock art affords unique opportunities for engendered research because it provides emic views of how specific people re-presented themselves. My feminist study investigates under-researched ‘San/Bushman’ gendered identities to understand more about area-specific constructions of personhood through analysing 2852 rock paintings from two adjacent areas of the northern Eastern Cape, South Africa. Using quantitative and qualitative methods and evidence from excavation archaeology, ethnography, ethology, and neurocognitive research, I identify three categories of ritual specialists: experienced and preeminent; ordinary; and novice. These paintings show that wo/men ritual specialists could transcend the identity norms of ordinary people, but men ritual specialists may have had more status and power. I suggest the paintings acted as a controlling mechanism for the potency of women, indoctrination of novices, and present an ideal for the practice of ritual specialists and ordinary people. The personal and embodied experiences of people living with a spinal cord injury in the or Tambo district municipality in the Eastern CapeMagenuka, Nkosazana Selina 11 1900 (has links)
The study was undertaken to deepen understanding of living with a spinal cord injury (SCI) in the rural communities of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa (RSA). The OR Tambo District Municipality, which was selected for its accessibility to the researcher, is virtually rural, the infrastructure is poorly developed and there is low socio-economic activity in the rural areas of the old Transkei.
In the RSA services for management and rehabilitation of SCIs varies from province to province.
A Heideggerian phenomenological approach was used to interpret the meaning of living with SCI persons in a rural community. The purpose was to describe and interpret what being-in the-world as a spinal cord injured person meant to the particpants. A key assumption in phenomenology is that understanding human beings and their actions is best achieved through examination of human experiences. Experience, including experience with living with SCI, offers itself as a record of human encounters, the interface between persons and their world, and experience can only be understood in terms of background and the social context of the experience (Pateman & Johnson 2000: 51).
Phenomenological interviews with ten people living with SCI explored their experience. The overall goal was to increase awareness of their experiences of living with SCI, and to encourage incorporation of knowledge gained into nursing practice. The central question in the study was `What is it like to live with a spinal cord injury in a rural community? Data were analysed according to Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology.
Two main themes were identified, namely reconceptualising being-in-the-world as a person with a disability; and being-with-each-other: experiencing being excluded, objectified and marginalized. The participants engaged in a process of reconstructing their identities following the traumatic loss of sensory and motor functioning. Data reflect the social and economic context in which living with SCI is experienced. The respondents' life experiences were influenced by socio-political, economic and historical factors, namely geographic location, poor infrastructure, poverty, low educational status, and unemployment and the community at large. It was noted that participants experienced difficulties in several areas in their daily life realm; naming, coping with health and disability problems, family interactions and relationships, and non-accessibility of amenities, including their own dwellings. In addition, being a person living with an SCI in the rural communities of the OR Tambo District Municipality carries a high physical and social risk due to lack of resources. The inability to live up to generally expected social roles led to role dissatisfaction. There is an urgent need for social support to overcome the negative societal attitudes experienced. They are forced into isolation with a limited social life and are poorly integrated into the communities in which they live. Most of what the participants raised pointed towards inadequate preparation for the outside world. Therefore, a holistic approach to rehabilitation is recommended, as holism means addressing the physical, social, emotional and cognitive needs. Accordingly, the researcher developed guidelines for facilitating community integration.
In conclusion, understanding how people experience living with SCI in a rural community is an essential prerequisite to the development of appropriate strategies to facilitate community integration. / Health Studies / D. Litt et Phil (Health Studies)

The perceptions and experience of male farm workers of the effects of a transpersonal social work intervention in addressing domestic violenceBrophy, Fiona C. 03 1900 (has links)

This study is an attempt to gain a deeper understanding, from the perspective
and experience of male farm workers, of the effects of a transpersonal social
work counselling intervention, on a wine farm in the Western Cape, in
promoting more socially functional behaviour and reducing violent behaviour,
particularly towards their intimate partners.
Domestic violence was found by Parenzee and Smythe (2003:47) of the
Institute of Criminality to be “pervasive within farming communities” and that
responses are less than adequate, no preventative services were being
offered and the only structured interventions that were in place, were aimed at
improving the livelihoods of women. There is a growing awareness that
addressing the high and increasing levels of violence against women in South
Africa needs to incorporate working directly with men as recommended, after
local studies, by Sonke Gender Justice Network (2009), Boonzaier (2005),
Londt (2004) and Abrahams, Jewkes and Laubsher (1999). A recent study concerning the legacy of dependency and powerlessness
experienced by farm workers on wine farms in the Western Cape by Falletisch
(2008:v) found there to be a need for “further research into accessible,
appropriate and sustainable intervention strategies on farms that empower
labourers and break the cycles of habitual excessive drinking, social violence
and hopelessness on farms.”
Transpersonal intervention enables human beings to attain a sense of Self and
the consequent accessing of their own inner power, and with that the
dissipation of the compulsion to hurt, control or abuse others and themselves
says Hollis (1994) and France (2008).
Circumstances that are oppressive, disempowering and poverty inducing, as
experienced by a large majority of farm labour in South Africa, may be
inhibiting to, but should not preclude, self realisation. The researcher, a social work practitioner in private practice on a wine farm in
the Western Cape, applied this approach in a counselling intervention with
male farm workers, to enable them to, not only reach their own self-defined
goals, but also to reduce abusive behaviour such as alcohol abuse and
domestic violence.
The effects of the intervention from the perspectives of the men as well as their
female partners, was explored in order to determine the effectiveness of the
intervention, particularly, in reducing intimate partner violence. The goal of the
study was thus to gain a deeper understanding, from the perspective and
experience of male farm workers, of the effects of a transpersonal social work
intervention in promoting more socially functional behaviour and reducing
violent behaviour, particularly towards their intimate partners.
There is a dearth of services, particularly addressing male workers on farms
says Shabodien (2005) and it is hoped that this study may evaluate the
effectiveness and potential for further application in practice amongst farm
worker communities in South Africa. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING:
Hierdie studie poog om, vanuit die perspektief van manlike plaaswerkers op ‘n
Wes-Kaapse wynplaas, ‘n duideliker begrip te verkry van die invloed van ‘n

navorsing na toeganklike, toepaslike en volhoubare intervensiestrategieë op
plase wat arbeiders bemagtig om die kringloop van gebruiklike oormatige

Interpersoonlike intervensies stel die mens in staat om ‘n beeld van die eie self
te verkry en die gevolglike bewuswording van hul eie innerlike krag, en met dit
die afname van die drang om ander en hulself seer te maak, te oorheers en te
mishandel volgens Hollis (1994) en France (2008).
Omstandighede wat onderdruk, ontmagtig en armoede tot gevolg het, soos
ondervind deur die groter meerderheid van plaasarbeid in Suid-Afrika, mag
selfverwesenliking inhibeer, maar nie uitsluit.
Die navorser, ‘n maatskaplike praktisyn in private praktyk op ‘n wynplaas in die
Wes-Kaap, het hierdie benadering toegepas in ‘n beradingsintervensie met
manlike plaaswerkers, om hulle in staat te stel om nie alleen hul eie doelwitte
te bereik nie, maar ook onaanvaarbare gedrag soos alkoholmisbruik en
huishoudelike geweld te verminder.
Die effek van die intervensie, vanuit die perspektief van die mans sowel as dié
van hul vroulike lewensmaats, is nagevors ten einde die effektiwiteit van die
intervensie te bepaal - veral die vermindering van geweld teenoor die
lewensmaats. Die doel van die studie was dus om ‘n dieper begrip te verkry,
vanuit die perspektief en ondervinding van manlike plaaswerkers, van die
positiewe uitwerking van ‘n interpersoonlike maatskaplike intervensie gemik op
die bevordering van meer sosiaal funksionele gedrag en die vermindering van
geweldadige gedrag, veral teenoor hul intieme lewensmaats.
Daar is ‘n gebrek aan dienste, veral wat manlike werkers op plase aanspreek
volgens Shabodien (2005), en word gehoop dat hierdie studie die effektiewiteit
en potensiaal vir verdere toepassing in die praktyk onder plaasgemeenskappe
in Suid-Afrika mag evalueer.

The contribution of social work to the prevention of crime by the criminal justice system in the Western CapeMagobotiti, Chris Derby 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (M.A.)--Stellenbosch University, 2001. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study deals with crime prevention within the criminal justice system in response
to the current crime situation in the Western Cape. It describes the structure and
function of the criminal justice system and assesses crime prevention processes with
specific reference to the role of social work within the criminal justice system. It
further examines the criminal justice system as practised in the Western Cape,
paying specific attention to the role of the police, criminal courts and prisons in the
prevention of crime.
In line with the nature of the study an exploratory approach was used. The data was
collected from both primary and secondary sources. Interviews and observations
were the main research techniques used for gathering primary data. Secondary data

was gathered by means of a study of the literature. Structured and unstructured
interviews were conducted with social workers, magistrates, police officers,
prosecutors, victims, offenders, community workers and other officials of the criminal
justice system. These interviews were mainly conducted at Wynberg magistrates'
court, Drakenstein Prison (formerly known as Victor Verster Prison) and
organisations based in the metro areas and on the Cape Flats. The study was
conducted over a period of three years with the interview schedule administered
between May and August 2000.
A sample of 21 respondents was selected on the basis of a purposive approach and
procedure. The comprehensive interview schedule consisted of mainly open-ended
and a few closed questions, generating information on the profiles of respondents,
crime dynamics in the Western Cape, the sentencing process and prevention
strategies, matters related to the criminal justice system and corrections, and the role
of community justice in the prevention of crime. The generated qualitative data was
analysed and interpreted. The findings suggested the necessity for social work to
make a contribution to the prevention of crime in a sensitive and proactive way. The
analysis has shown that criminal justice approaches can significantly enhance the
process of crime prevention, but that the criminal justice system requires combined strategies and approaches for crime prevention to be effective. It is in this context
that the contribution of social work can be much more effective.
The recommendations of the study have demonstrated a need for social workers to
promote approaches that are premised on a broader understanding of the role of the
criminal justice system in the prevention of crime. It is important to state that the
study's recommendations for the prevention of .crirne can also be implemented by
other role-players, particularly within the criminal justice system. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie ondersoek handeloor misdaadvoorkoming deur die strafregstelsel in reaksie

Black in-migration from the Eastern Cape into the Cape Metropolitan area : profile of the migrant and reasons for movingBritz, Andre Alfrieda January 2002 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Migration is the (usually free) movement of individuals from one place to
another. Migration is formally conceptualized as the movement of households
from relatively poorer regions - the sending areas -- to relatively better-off
regions -- the receiving areas -- thereby enhancing the households' chances of
improved access to resources. The migrant can be defined as a person that has
gone out of his/her own free will from one place to another. In this sample and
study, a distinction will be made between household heads born in the CMA,
household heads that arrived before 1994, and household heads that arrived in
the CMA in 1994 and thereafter. These migrants will be called "Household Head
Born CMA", "Household Head older migrants", and "Household Head recent
migrants" respectively.
Informal squatter settlements are mushrooming at the outskirts of the CMA and
very little is known about the motivation of migrants to leave their rural areas. In
explaining the occurrence of migration and of why people migrate, one has to
consider the push-pull theory. In the sending areas there are certain push
factors, pushing the migrant out of the area. In the receiving area, there are pull
factors, pulling the migrant towards the area. Migrants are also not a random
selection of people. They have specific traits and differ from non-migrants in
certain respects (age, life-cycle stage, marital status, education, occupation and
status, cultural attributes and traditionalist vs. innovator). It was found in this
study that the CMA as opposed to the Eastern Cape has certain differences,
thereby pulling and pushing the migrant into and out of the areas respectively.

Thesis (MEdPsych (Educational Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to gain a contextual understanding of the dropout phenomenon in a specific school in a high-risk community. An applied, interpretive, qualitative research design was used. This involved an investigation of the subjective experiences of learners at risk of dropping out of school during the post-compulsory phase of their education at a specific school. Informants were purposively selected according to specific criteria. Data were collected through eight semi-structured interviews with learners at risk of dropping out of school; a semi-structured interview with a member of the community; a focus-group interview and collages. The data was transcribed and analysed using a qualitative thematic analysis, and compared to previous research gleaned from an extensive literature review. Results that emerged from this study indicated that the participants experienced several barriers to learning embedded in the interconnected systems, which could cause them to drop out of school. This included issues such as single-parent families, family conflict, lack of parental support, emotional difficulties due to home circumstances, substance abuse and socio-economic issues. Although results showed that the school of study had seemingly adopted an inclusive policy and had made some adaptations to accommodate learners, it became evident that the existing support structures within the school and the community were experienced as insufficient. Due to the nature of unsupportive and conflicting family systems reported by some learners, teachers are expected to perform additional nurturing roles that add pressure to an already overburdened educational system. The practical implications of the results are that, in order to support adolescents in a high-risk environment and to prevent them from dropping out of school, the focus should be on protective factors. This could be achieved through, for example, early identification and targeting of learners at risk of dropping out of school, the implementation of strategies aimed to increase engagement of all learners in the school, the implementation of an ongoing supportive drug-free programme in the school and the community in conjunction with supportive organisations, professional development workshops and in-service training for teachers, altered school schedules, and career guidance and work internships for interested learners that could be arranged in union with the local university. The results from this study therefore highlighted areas that could receive attention in the specific school to address the problem for learners at risk of dropping out of school. Further qualitative research is recommended to investigate this phenomenon in a broader spectrum of South African learners. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van hierdie studie was om ’n kontekstuele begrip te kry van die uitsak-verskynsel in ’n spesifieke skool wat in ’n hoërisiko-gemeenskap geleë is. ’n Toegepaste, vertolkende, kwalitatiewe navorsingsmodel is gebruik. Die gevolg was ’n ondersoek van die subjektiewe ondervindinge van leerders wat die risiko geloop het om op skoolvlak uit te sak gedurende die naverpligte fase van hulle opvoeding aan ’n spesifieke skool. Informante is doelbewus volgens spesifieke kriteria gekies. Data is versamel deur middel van agt semi-gestruktureerde onderhoude met leerders wat ’n risiko geloop het om op skoolvlak uit te sak; ’n semi-gestruktureerde onderhoud met ’n lid van die gemeenskap; ’n fokusgroeponderhoud en plakskilderye. Die data is getranskribeer en geanaliseer deur gebruik te maak van ’n kwalitatiewe tematiese analise en is vergelyk met vorige navorsing wat versamel is uit ’n uitgebreide literatuuroorsig. Resultate wat uit hierdie studie geblyk het, het daarop gedui dat die deelnemers verskeie leerhindernisse ondervind het wat veranker is in die onderling-verbonde stelsels wat kon veroorsaak het dat hulle op skoolvlak uitsak. Hierby was ingesluit kwessies soos enkelouer-gesinne, gesinskonflik, ’n gebrek aan ouerlike ondersteuning, emosionele probleme as gevolg van huislike omstandighede, dwelmmisbruik en sosio-ekonomiese kwessies. Alhoewel resultate gewys het dat die studieskool skynbaar ’n inklusiewe beleid volg en ’n paar aanpassings gemaak het om leerders te akkommodeer, het dit duidelik geword dat die bestaande ondersteuning-strukture binne die skool en gemeenskap as onvoldoende ervaar is. As gevolg van die aard van nie-ondersteunende en teenstrydige gesinstelsels soos meegedeel deur sommige leerders, word daar van onderwysers verwag om bykomende opvoedingsrolle te vervul wat spanning veroorsaak in ’n reeds oorlaaide opvoedingstelsel. Die praktiese implikasies van die resultate is, dat die fokus op beskermende faktore moet wees, om adolessente in ’n hoërisiko-omgewing te ondersteun en te verhoed dat hulle op skoolvlak uitsak. Dit sou bereik kon word deur byvoorbeeld, vroeë identifisering en teikengroepvorming van leerders wat die risiko loop om op skoolvlak uit te sak, die implementering van strategieë wat daarop gemik is om die betrokkenheid van alle leerders in die skool te verhoog, die implementering van ’n deurlopende ondersteunende dwelmvrye program in die skool en gemeenskap in samewerking met ondersteuningsorganisasies, professionele-ontwikkelingswerkswinkels en indiensopleiding vir onderwysers, veranderde skoolskedules en beroepsvoorligting en werk-internskappe vir belangstellende leerders wat gereël kan word in samewerking met die plaaslike universiteit. Die resultate van hierdie studie het areas in die spesifieke skool uitgewys wat kan aandag kry om die probleem van leerders wat die risiko loop om op skoolvlak uit te sak, aan te spreek. Dit word
aanbeveel dat verdere kwalitatiewe navorsing gedoen word om hierdie verskynsel in ’n breër spektrum van Suid-Afrikaanse leerders te ondersoek.

Text in Afrikaans with abstracts in Afrikaans and English / In hierdie proefskrif word die agtergrond van die pre-koloniale stand van die destydse Kaapkolonie geskets en die historiese ontstaan van een gemeenskap word as tersaaklike voorbeeld behandel. Die verhouding wat met verloop van tyd tussen hierdie gemeenskap en die indringende koloniste ontwikkel het, is grotendeels gebaseer op persepsies en houdinge wat reeds sedert die 17e, 18e en veral die 19e eeu weens die ontmoeting tussen die uiteenlopende bevolkingsgroepe ontstaan het.
Die verhoudinge wat inherent as gevolg van hierdie koloniale inmenging vertroebel is, was die oorsaak dat sekere inheemse bevolkingsgroepe radikale verandering ondergaan het. Die inheemse bevolking se rol het al hoe meer ondergeskik geword en die landskap het vir goed verander. Waar die inheemse bevolkingsgroepe se grondgebied van hulle ontneem is, moes hulle hul oorlewingstrategieë drasties verander.
Die sogenaamde bruinmense, wat ontstaan het uit die ondertrou van die koloniale inkommers met die plaaslike bevolking en ingevoerde slawe, is gou tot die rol van arbeiders gereduseer en hul status het bly verlaag soos die tyd verbygegaan het. Aangesien min van hulle grondbesitters kon wees, wys hierdie proefskrif dat daar wel uitsonderings was. Daar is ’n gemeenskap wat die eienaars van erfgrond aan die Gouritzrivier is en dit steeds na 155 jaar besit. Hierdie gemeenskap is Buisplaas.
‘n Blanke voorvader, Frederick du Buis het aan sy twee seuns wat van gemengde bloed was, Simson en Saul ’n stuk grond langs die Gouritzrivier in die suidooste van die Wes-Kaap nagelaat. Op hierdie 94 hektaar het ’n Buis-gemeenskap ontstaan wat deur al die jare van politieke veranderinge in Suid-Afrika bly voortbestaan en gegroei het. Die onsimpatieke geografie en klimaat van Buisplaas het sy beperkings ingehou en tog het hierdie gemeenskap oorleef en die skamele voordele soos die nabyheid van die rivier en die aalwyne tot hulle voordeel gebruik. Al het die ekonomiese realiteit die meeste van die inwoners genoop om elders te gaan vir verdere opleiding en werksgeleenthede het die Buis-afstammelinge dikwels na hul aftrede uit hul beroepe teruggekeer na hul heimat.
Ontwikkeling en die daaropvolgende verbetering van hul omstandighede het eers 127 jaar na die oordrag van Buisplaas aan Simson en Saul Buis begin en ’n groot verbetering in hul lewensomstandighede gemaak. Die rol van die Buisplaas Bewonersvereniging wat in 1986 gestig is en die belangrike proses van ontwikkeling wat deur hierdie vereniging begin is, vorm ’n kernaspek van die studie. Oor die jare het die twee kerke, die Lutherse en Anglikaanse kerke ’n deurslaggewende invloed op die inwoners gehad en veral omdat die Lutherse kerk ook verantwoordelik was dat daar ’n laerskool op Buisplaas opgerig is.
Die navorsingsproses het die toepassing van ’n multi-dissiplinêre benadering behels, maar is daar hoofsaaklik van historiese metodologie gebruik gemaak. Die aktiewe bydrae van verskeie inwoners en oud-inwoners van Buisplaas het die gebruik van ander primêre en sekondêre bronne aangevul. Die fokus van die studie was derhalwe op die Buisplaas-gemeenskap wat vir so lank reeds bruin grondeienaars is, te midde van die problematiek van grondeienaarskap in Suid-Afrika.
Alhoewel die konkrete realiteite van hierdie gemeenskap behandel word, gaan dit meer oor die ontasbare emosionele verbintenis van die mense met hulle plek, hulle eiendom. Dit gaan oor ‘n landskap wat uit kulturele tradisies en herinneringe bestaan. Dit kry die mistiek deur die krag van onthou, deur die nooit-vergeet-nie van mense se plekbewussyn. Plek word die verlenging van die self want plek is dan ook ‘n oord van tussenmenslike verbondenheid. Dit maak dit nie ‘n volmaakte plek nie maar ten minste ‘n plek waar mense van mekaar geweet het en steeds weet. Die veranderende ekonomiese en politieke streeksdinamika het ‘n invloed op die betekenis wat die inwoners aan hulle plek heg. Die fisiese en ruimtelike omgewing beïnvloed ook die interaksie en verhoudings van hierdie mense. / This thesis describes the background of the pre-colonial situation in the Cape Colony of the time. It uses the historical origin and development of one specific community as an example. The relationship which developed between this community and the intrusive colonialists is based to a large extent on perceptions and attitudes which were observed in the seventeenth and eighteenth but especially during the nineteenth century between the diverse population groups. The interference of the colonialists caused great harm to these relationships and consequently some of the indigenous population groups underwent radical changes. The indigenous population’s role in the area became more and more submersed and the landscape changed forever. As the territories of the indigenous groups were taken from them, they had to change their survival strategies drastically.
The group which in former times was called ‘coloured’ because of inter marriages between the colonialists and the local population or the imported slaves, was soon reduced to labourers and their status diminished as time went by. In spite of very few being able to remain as landowners this thesis shows that there were exceptions. There is a community which inherited land next to the Gouritz River and after 155 years they are still the rightful owners. This community is known as Buisplaas.
A white ancestor, Frederick du Buis left his two sons, Simson and Saul who were of mixed blood, 94 hectares of land next to the Gouritz River, in the south eastern part of the Western Cape. This is where the Buis community came into being and through the many years of political change in South Africa they continued to remain and develop there. The harsh geography and climate of Buisplaas had its limitations and yet the community survived. They used the meagre possibilities of the area like their proximity to the Gouritz River and the aloes growing there to their benefit. Although the economic realities forced many of the inhabitants to move elsewhere to further their studies or to find work opportunities, the Buisplaas descendants often returned to their community after retirement.
It was only 127 years after Simson and Saul Buis inherited Buisplaas that development and consequently improvement started happening on a bigger scale. It changed their quality of life immensely. In 1986 the Residents’ Association of Buisplaas was formed and its role in the development of the community forms the major part of this study. Over the years both the Lutheran and the Anglican churches had a very strong influence on the inhabitants, especially since the Lutheran church was responsible for the establishment of a primary school at Buisplaas.
The research entailed a multi-faceted approach, but mostly historical methodology was used. The active participation of different members of the Buisplaas community as well as some of the former inhabitants and neighbours in this thesis, supplemented the use of various other sources. The focus of the study was on the Buisplaas community who had been land owners as so-called ‘coloured’ people long before the issues and problems of owning land in South Africa were addressed.
Although the basic realities of survival of this community will be addressed, the main focus is on the emotional bonds of the people with their place, with their property. It deals with their memories and with the cultural traditions that form the backbone of the area. This study has a charm which is revealed because of the memories of the people and the omnipresent consciousness of the ownership of their special place. Place becomes an extension of the self because place and space are also where human ties exist. It doesn’t make the place perfect but it remains a place where the people have always been aware of one another. The changing political and economic dynamics of the area have an influence on the importance and meaning of this place for its inhabitants. Contested rights : the impact of game farming on farm workers in the Bushmen's River areaLuck, Kelly January 2004 (has links)
This thesis is an investigation of the impact of commercial game farming on former farm workers in the Bushman's River area of the Eastern Cape. In its examination of the broader economic and political changes that have facilitated a move from agriculture to game farming, it analyses how these changes affect farm workers. The main concern of the thesis is the ways in which farm workers (at the local level) respond to changes at the national and global level (legal and political changes, the advent of tourism, and the injection of foreign capital and businessmen into the area). Lack of knowledge about their rights under the current political dispensation, as well as the perceived need for mediation between themselves and foreign landowners, points to a general sense of powerlessness. Feelings of alienation from local government structures aimed at fulfilling this function indicate a significant gap between the statute at the national level and the local reality. Local reality is informed by a strong conservatism which is generated by African Independent Church structures and local Xhosa perceptions of manhood and respectability. This conservative discourse leads to a frame of reference which is largely informed by pre-1994 interactions with farmers and government. This results in a situation in which farm workers, largely unaware of their rights in the new dispensation, operate as they did in the past; waiting for landowners to decide their fate for them. What ensues is a lack of meaningful interaction with government and landowners, perpetuating their subjugation and cynicism as to whether government structures are in fact working in their interests. The thesis comes to three main conclusions. The first is that game farming has been negatively received by farm workers due to the associated threats of unemployment and eviction. The second is that despite high levels of subjugation, even the very poor are agents to some degree. The creation of a masculine identity which is internally articulated, as opposed to outwardly expressed, and the grounding of reputation in the family suggest that farm workers have developed mechanisms to deal with their disempowered position. Lastly, farm workers are in possession of social capital which has made it possible for them to deal with their low status in the societal hierarchy. This includes the Church, family and fellow community members. These coping strategies have however proved a disadvantage in the current era because they prevent direct communication with landowners, government and NGOs.

Investigating aspects of corporate citizenship on private game farms: the case of Mtshelezi Game Reserve in Makana Municipality, Eastern Cape ProvinceNyama, Cynthia January 2008 (has links)
Research show that post 1996 period has experienced an unprecedented increase in game based operations. The corporate citizenship or corporate social responsibility of the game reserves is of much interest to this study with a focus on the rights of previous and current occupants of farms, workers’ well-being, job creation, quality of life and poverty alleviation within the game/tourism industry. The research was conducted as a qualitative case study and the tools employed for data gathering include: a review of the relevant literature, interviews (face-to-face), the administering of a questionnaire survey and document analysis from diversity of resources which include the Department of Labour, East Cape Agricultural Research Project, and through use of multiple data sources. The approach taken in this dissertation is to examine to what extent the private game reserves in the Makana Municipality can be labelled as “corporate citizens” and this was done by means of a case study of one private game reserve. The areas that are deemed to be most important in this regard are (i) employment history (ii) educational opportunities (iii) wages (iv) housing (v) land tenure. The study established that younger, better educated people are likely to secure better paying employment on PGR. The nature and conditions of sale of the farm to the PGR can impact on the employment secured by workers in the new dispensation. Workers are tied to these jobs because of the very long hours that prevent them from doing anything else to earn money. Some of the workers had opportunities to learn new skills but the question remains; which people are these and how long will growing differentials in earnings reproduce the poorly educated worker in the next generation. The study also high lightened the need for academics and researchers to come with a common set of corporate citizenship measures such as to measure corporate social impacts.
