The object of study is framed by an understanding of analogic bibliographic record conversion to the Bibliograhpic MARC21 format, based on a syntactic and semantic analysis of records described according to descriptive metadata structure standards and content standards. The thesis in this research is that the syntactic and semantic principles of bibliographic records, defined by description and visualization cataloguing schemes, present in the descriptive metadata structure standards and content standards, determine the bibliographic record conversion process to the MARC21 Bibliographic Format. In the light of this, the purpose of this research is to develop a theoretical study of the syntax and semantics of bibliographic records, grounded in Linguistic theories of Saussure and Hjelmslev, which can underlie analogic bibliographic record conversion to the MARC21 Bibliographic Format using a computational interpreter. To this end, the general aim was to develop a theoretical-conceptual model of the syntax and semantics of bibliographic records, based on saussurean and hjelmslevian linguistic studies of human language manifestations, which can be applicable to a computational interpreter designed for the conversion of bibliographic records to the MARC21 Bibliographic Format. To attain this goal, the following specific objectives were identified, in two groups and related to the theoretical-conceptual model of bibliographic record syntax and semantics and to the conversion process of the records, respectively: to make explicit the relationship between the syntax and semantics of bibliographic records...

Paradigmatic Change and Its Effect on the Collection and Cataloging of LGBTQAI+ Literature in the Elementary School Library

Garrison, Linda 01 January 2021 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to determine if elementary school libraries in west central Florida provide diverse, inclusive collections of LGBTQAI+ material in a safe space, and, if they do, to ascertain the librarians' understanding of, and satisfaction with, how that material is cataloged and classified. I wanted to know whether the literature was easily located, or, conversely, if the library classification tools and practices either misrepresented non-normative students or failed to represent them at all, given the potential impacts on students' self-acceptance. To answer these questions, I surveyed 41 private, independent, and public librarians, 10 of whom volunteered for in-depth, semi-structured interviews. During the interviews, I explored how the librarians used lists, thesauri, tagging, ratings, and spine labels to supplement their catalog searches. As none of this work happens in a vacuum, I also examined the paradigm in which the librarians do their work. I approached this study as a humanist, through a feminist lens, using Queer Theory and Whiteness studies. I was not seeking a unitary truth but rather a thick description of each librarian's perspectives and decisions concerning their collection management and cataloging procedures, contextualized within their daily demands as school librarians and, in the case of the public school librarians, technology specialists. My research found a group of librarians dedicated to their work, each of whom approached the management of LGBTQAI+ literature from their own positionality, ranging from those who denied that elementary students needed this literature at all, to those who wanted to provide it but were restricted by time, budget, and parental and administration censorship, to those who boldly proclaimed "I'm not afraid."

Handskriftskatalogisering inpå livet : En undersökning av de kategorier som används vid stambokskatalogisering / Cataloging of manuscripts up close : A study of the categories used when cataloguing alba amicorum

Solling, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate if three scientific articles concerning the cataloguing of alba amicorum written in the 1980’s and early 1990’s had any influence on the cataloguing of alba amicorum. Another purpose is to investigate the similarities and differences between the catalogues from the late 1980’s and onward. The focus lies on the categories used when cataloguing the alba. Alba amicorum are catalogued on two levels: on a general level, i.e. the album as a whole is catalogued and in addition all the inscriptions in the album are cata-logued separately, the so-called leaf cataloguing. The study uses a comparative method. First the three scientific articles are compared with each other, then nine catalogues of alba amicorum from 1988 and onward, five printed and four online ones, are investigated regarding which categories are used respectively not used in the different catalogues. Then the categories pro-posed in the scientific articles are compared with the ones used in the catalogues. One result of the study is that the differences in the cataloguing on the general level between the printed catalogues are small but that the variation is larger amongst the online ones. The same patterns cannot be seen regarding the leaf cataloguing; here the variation between the catalogues is generally somewhat larger but the most central categories can be found in all catalogues. Another result is that some of the categories in the cata-logues reflect the printed or online form of the catalogue. The study shows that it is hard to define exactly which influence the scientific articles had on the catalogues but that it probably hasn’t been that large. Many of the categories occurring in the catalogues have been used when cataloguing alba amicorum since the early 1900’s. Maybe one could say that the alba themselves are con-stituted in such a way that it is more or less natural which categories should be used when cataloguing them. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.
