Catherine the Great and Her Empire in British and American Newspapers

Cordero, Arlen B 01 January 2021 (has links)
This paper explores portrayals of Catherinian Russia in British and American periodicals during her reign, between 1762 and 1796. Catherine II had an incredibly eventful reign as she enacted important domestic reforms, engaged in two major wars with the Ottoman Empire, executed three partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and created the League of Armed Neutrality, among other accomplishments. Britain and America equally experienced momentous change during this period, most notably with the American War for Independence. This paper examines how British and American periodicals reacted to the significant events of Catherine's reign using published materials such as news reports, opinion essays, book reviews, poems, Parliament proceedings, and letters to the editor. This paper first discusses the image of Catherine II as a monarch and a woman in British newspapers. I analyze the transformation in the British perspective from a favorable view of the empress to a condemnatory one beginning in 1780 and juxtapose it to Catherine's portrayal in American periodicals in which the empress suffered from a negative reputation for a majority of her reign. I then shift focus from Catherine as an individual to Russia as a whole. I explore the derogatory views of the Russian nation and people largely expressed in British and American newspapers and identify how this prejudice, in turn, affected the image of Catherine II. The major themes of this analysis are foreign policy between Russia, Britain, and America, during Catherine's reign in the 18th century, gender constructs, and ethnocentrism.

Une reine épistolaire. Les usages de la lettre et leurs effets dans l’action diplomatique de Catherine de Médicis, 1559 1589 / A Writing Queen. Uses And Effects of Letter in Diplomacy in the Age of Catherine de Medici, 1559-1589

Gellard, Matthieu 27 November 2010 (has links)
Historians have always been interested by Catherine de Medici but no research has even been produced on a central aspect of her action: diplomacy. Yet, she has written an enormous amount of letters from the accession to the throne of her son François II in 1559 to her own death in 1589 and we still have 5 958 letters from a correspondence that has never weakened during three decades. Among them, we can find 2 454 foreign letters, that forms a central object to understand the foreign policy decided by the Queen Mother. Yet, during this work, the letters written by Catherine de Medici to the French ambassadors and the replies she received from them has mainly been considered as an historical object more than a testimony of diplomatic negotiations. Therefore, the interest has been focused on epistolarity as a means of government in a time when distance between actors makes the letter to be the only link between them.

En Strid För Lättnad : En narratologisk läsning av Edith Södergrans ”Undret” med diskussion ur feministteologisk synvinkel

Aspersand, Anna-Karin January 2020 (has links)
This thesis is a narratological analysis of the poem “The Miracle” by Edith Södergran. The thesis uses narratological tools from Mieke Bal in order to investigate different themes mainly connected to Christological sacrificial mythology. The thesis furtermore offers a discussion that highlights the poem from a feminist theological point of view, mainly with the help of ideas developed by Catherine Keller and Anne-Sofie Eriksson. ”The Miracle” is a dialogue between a girl and a nun about a troublesome dream that the girl has. It is a dream, which the girl finds strange and it concerns the need for revenge to reach relief. The dialogue also shows the risk of a kind of oppressive forgiveness by covering unfairness, and how the girl finds her way with help from the nun. With the altar in the poem as a kind of stage, “The Miracle” offers a challenge for the church and the whole world about attitudes, and about how to be constructive and liberating. This includes questions about the need to be careful and realistic when it comes to danger as well. How can you aim for fairness and at the same time handle unfairness, at several levels? Both the girl and the nun keep progressing in their different situations, from a horizon including escatological expressions. It is not easy, but they are not tied to oppressive traditions in their way of thinking either. What makes “The Miracle” such an interesting poem is the way it directs the reader to pose several constructive questions, without offering preformed answers.
