Fiber-laser-based noise-immune cavity-enhanced optical heterodyne molecular spectrometry

Foltynowicz, Aleksandra January 2009 (has links)
Noise-immune cavity-enhanced optical heterodyne molecular spectro-metry (NICE-OHMS) is one of the most sensitive laser-based absorption techniques. The high sensitivity of NICE-OHMS is obtained by a unique combination of cavity enhancement (for increased interaction length with a sample) with frequency modulation spectrometry (for reduction of noise). Moreover, sub-Doppler detection is possible due to the presence of high intensity counter-propagating waves inside an external resonator, which provides an excellent spectral selectivity. The high sensitivity and selectivity make NICE-OHMS particularly suitable for trace gas detection. Despite this, the technique has so far not been often used for practical applications due to its technical complexity, originating primarily from the requirement of an active stabilization of the laser frequency to a cavity mode. The main aim of the work presented in this thesis has been to develop a simpler and more robust NICE-OHMS instrumentation without compro-mising the high sensitivity and selectivity of the technique. A compact NICE-OHMS setup based on a fiber laser and a fiber-coupled electro-optic modulator has been constructed. The main advantage of the fiber laser is its narrow free-running linewidth, which significantly simplifies the frequency stabilization procedure. It has been demonstrated, using acetylene and carbon dioxide as pilot species, that the system is capable of detecting relative absorption down to 3 × 10-9 on a Doppler-broadened transition, and sub-Doppler optical phase shift down to 1.6 × 10-10, the latter corresponding to a detection limit of 1 × 10-12 atm of C2H2. Moreover, the potential of dual frequency modulation dispersion spectrometry (DFM-DS), an integral part of NICE-OHMS, for concentration measurements has been assessed. This thesis contributes also to the theoretical description of Doppler-broadened and sub-Doppler NICE-OHMS signals, as well as DFM-DS signals. It has been shown that the concentration of an analyte can be deduced from a Doppler-broadened NICE-OHMS signal detected at an arbitrary and unknown detection phase, provided that a fit of the theoretical lineshape to the experimental data is performed. The influence of optical saturation on Doppler-broadened NICE-OHMS signals has been described theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. In particular, it has been shown that the Doppler-broadened dispersion signal is unaffected by optical saturation in the Doppler limit. An expression for the sub-Doppler optical phase shift, valid for high degrees of saturation, has been derived and verified experimentally up to degrees of saturation of 100.

Collage direct sur surfaces structurées / Direct bonding of patterned surfaces

Radisson, Damien 17 December 2014 (has links)
Direct bonding is a process by which two sufficiently flat and clean surfaces can bond to each other without any added adhesive layer. Direct bonding of patterned surfaces is often used for the fabrication of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), where a silicon wafer with cavities is bonded to a plain wafer. The fabrication of these devices is expensive and it would be useful to have guidelines when designing knew devices to know in advance if direct bonding will be possible.A 2D simulation model of the direct bonding of two substrates is developed and usedto study the influence of the cavities on the bonding wave velocity. The prediction of the simulation run with Comsol® are in good coherence with the experimental measures and a 2D law of the bonding velocity is obtained. The bonding of perfectly flat wafers with cavities should always be possible. Limitations to the bonding of real wafers are due to the elastic energy cost of deforming the non perfectly flat wafers. This limit is reached easily when the bonding wave must cross a trench, so a design with a small bonding guide to help cross the cavity will work best. The width of this wave guide should be chosen by considering the bow of the wafer. Indeed the second important design rule is to keep a bonding area big enough to have more adhesion energy than the elastic energy cost due to non flat wafers deformation. The adhesion energy is an important parameter of the direct bonding, as it is theenergy that drives the adhesion. This adhesion energy is different from the more widely known bonding energy which is the energy needed to separate two previously bonded wafers. In this work a simple method to measure the adhesion is proposed. Long time measurement of the evolution of the adhesion energy lead us to propose a mechanism for its evolution linked to the formation of capillary bridges between rough surfaces.

Estudo do fenômeno de formação e colapso de macro cavidades em líquidos / Study of the phenomenon of formation and collapse of macro cavities in liquids

Pedro Augusto Fernandes Pereira 02 April 2014 (has links)
Cavitation and bubble dynamics are fairly recurring topics in literature, mostly due to their effects in various types of phenomena such as heat transfer and flow in pipes. Considering liquid phases, it is known that these cavity structures are normally associated with the metastable equilibrium, reached due to local pressure drop or overheating of a pure substance (or nearly so). In these cases, the phase change require a startup via some appropriate mechanism, which generates a fast sequence of phenomena. Although commonly associated with damage, recently several studies shown practical applications of these topics, and a still little explored field emerged, which is the field of macro cavities. These cavities can be generated by heating water at a low pressure, under specific conditions, creating an explosive sequences and forming piston like movements for the water inside a properly scaled casing. This phenomenon appears to be similar in many aspects to micro cavities, more specifically for cavities near free surfaces, although, without doubt, on a much larger scale. The mentioned aspects were filmed with high-speed cameras and the main features were compared with those observed in micro scale. Several tests have been developed to better understand the dynamics of the formation and collapse of these structures, especially taking into account a more one-dimensional behavior to the evolution of the bubble. Through various approximations, and analysis of different assumptions for the variation of pressure and the resistance force, analytical and numerical solutions were obtained for the force exerted on the bottom of the container and the expansion and collapse of bubbles over time. The proposed solutions in comparison with experimental data showed good agreement between each other suggesting that the fundamental aspects of the dynamics of the cavity were properly considered and quantified.

Estudo clínico randomizado de restaurações classe II de ART com e sem retenções proximais em dentes decíduos / Randomized clinical trial of multiple surface ART restorations with and without proximal retentions in primary teeth

Priscilla Santana Pinto Gonçalves 14 June 2017 (has links)
The atraumatic restorative treatment is an approach of minimally invasive care that aims to prevent and interrupt the progression of dental caries. There is no randomized clinical trial in primary teeth with multiple surface ART restorations, with and without additional retentions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of proximal retention grooves on the survival rates of occlusoproximal ART restorations in primary teeth using high viscosity glass ionomer cement with high flexural strength. A total of 183 children aged 4 to 7 years, with good general health, 1 to 4 occlusoproximal cavities in primary molars without pulp involvement or tooth pain were included. Of these children, three hundred teeth were randomized and alocated into two groups, according to the child\'s caries index and the size of the cavity to be restored. The groups were: control - conventional occlusoproximal ART restorations (Group 1, n=150) and test - occlusoproximal ART restorations containing proximal retention grooves (Group 2, n=150). The procedures of both groups followed standardized steps. In the test group the retentions were performed with a modified dentin spoon at the gingival-vestibular / lingual angle up to 0.5 mm from the amelodentin junction of the occlusal margin. After 6 and 12 months 130 restorations in Group 1 and 110 restorations in Group 2 were examined (blind) using the modified ART Frencken criteria and the modified USPHS criteria. The Kaplan-Meier test was performed for the survival rate of the restorations (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between groups (p=0.70) using the ART criteria, and the survival rates found for both groups were greater than 90%. The same results was observed for all USPHS criteria (color, marginal discoloration, secondary decay, anatomical form, marginal integrity and surface texture) (p>0.05). The main reasons for restorations failure were total or partial loss of restoration (84%), followed by pulpal inflammation (16%). It was concluded that multiple surface ART restorations with proximal retention grooves presented similar survival rates to non-grooves restorations after 6 and 12 months.

Analyse numérique discrète de l'aléa fontis et du foisonnement associés aux cavités souterraines / Discrete numerical analysis of the sinkhole hazard and the bulking associated to underground cavities

Ikezouhene, Yaghkob 15 September 2017 (has links)
Over time, the underground cavities are subjected to aging and several types of degradation can occur. The old underground cavities have probably not been designed to be stable over the long term. They have sometimes been totally or partially backfilled, but not in a systematic way. The collapse of a mine causes deconsolidation of the upper levels of the overburden. These mechanisms can cause two types of disorders on the surface: subsidence or sinkhole. Subsidence and sinkhole can cause severe damage to structures and infrastructures in surface, but also jeopardize the safety of the population. The work of this thesis revolves around the study of rock's bulking, sinkhole and its spread in the overburden. The aims of this thesis are twofold: firstly, to study the bulking of rock during the roofs mine collapse; Secondly, modeling the spread of the sinkhole in the overburden and thus to prioritize the parameters associated with this phenomenon. The first part of this thesis is a bibliographical study which summarizes the methods of exploitation, methods of analysis of stability of underground quarries, methods of prediction of the height of collapse and estimation of the bulking factor. At the end of this bibliographic synthesis, the study focused on shallow underground quarries operated by rooms and pillars. Thus, numerical modeling using the discrete element method (MED) was chosen to analyze the instability of roofs of underground quarries. The second part focuses on the development of a numerical model with the following objectives: on the one hand, the development of a Rock Mass Discretization Program (RMDP) which constitutes the preprocessor of the STTAR3D software and the development of a Code allowing calculation of the bulking factor of the rubble of collapse. On the other hand, implementation of the behavior laws on STTAR3D.The third part consists of determining, on the one hand, the physicals and mechanicals characteristics of samples taken from the quarry of the Brasserie (Paris-France), which was chosen to test the model developed. On the other hand, determining of parameters of the behavior law used for modeling the contacts, namely “” and “μ”.Finally, the last part of this work is made of numerical simulations for which the parameters of the behavior law measured experimentally have been introduced in STTAR3D. In the first numerical study, we investigate the effect of fall height, the radius of the initial opening of the sinkhole and the fracturing degree on the bulking of the rubble, as well as the effect of variation of the bulking on the collapse height and on the subsidence. In a second step, a model of the Brasserie’s mine is realized, the behavior of which is studied by numerical simulation in order to obtain the subsidence on the surface and the collapse height, which are compared with the in-situ observations

Analyse et optimisation des chambres réverbérantes à l'aide du concept de cavité chaotique ouverte / Analysis and optimization of reverberation chambers using the concept of losses chaotic cavity

Selemani, Kamardine 06 February 2014 (has links)
This work deals with the optimization of the geometry of a reverberation chamber, drawing inspiration from the concept of chaotic cavity. Reverberation chambers, widely used for electromagnetic compatibility tests, are used above a minimal frequency from which the fields are statistically isotropic and uniform; however to respect these properties, a mode stirring process is necessary, that can be mechanical or electronic. As, in chaotic cavities, most modes are isotropic and uniform without the help of any stirring process, we take advantage of the knowledge gained from the studies of chaotic cavities to optimize reverberation chamber behavior. We firstly consider 2D chaotic cavities obtained by modifying a rectangular cavity. Measurements besed on a perturbative approch, and validated by simulations, show uniformly distributed electric fields. Similar geometrical modifications are then proposed in 3D.Three 3D different geometries of cavities obtained from a 3D rectangular cavity are then studied, and their properties are compared with those of a classical reverberation chamber equipped witdh a mode stirrer. Eigenmodes and resonant frequencies are determined numerically using Ansoft HFSS software, first by considering fixed cavity geometries, then by moving the stirrer.Electric field uniformity and isotropy are studied using several criteria; all of them clearly show that the best performances are attained within one of the proposed chaotic cavities. Moreover, a strong energy localization effect appears for numerous modes in the classical reverberation chamber, whereas it is not observed in the proposed 3D chaotic cavity. This effect, never reported in reverberation chamber studies, affects the field uniformity and isotropy within the working volume. The cavities properties are also compared width respect to their eigenfrequency spacing distributions. As predicted by the Random matrix Theory, the best agrement width the asymptotic law associated to chaotic cavities corresponds to the best field properties in terms of uniformity and isotropy. It leads to the proposal of reverberation chamber characterization criteria based on resonant frequencies instead of field distributions

In this research, propagation phenomena of acoustic waves in one-dimensional and two-dimensional cavities is investigated and a methodology, based on energy methods, is proposed to predict acoustic response of these structures, at mid and high frequencies. These methods, originated from Energy Flow Analysis, use as primary variables the energy density and the energy flow. Two methodologies are used to solve approximated energy differential equations derived from EFA: Energy Finite Element Method (EFEM) and Energy Spectral Element Method (ESEM). The Spectral Element Method (SEM), is used to solve the wave propagation differential equations of acoustic in one-dimensional cavities, moreover this method is applied to validate the proposed methodology. Different acoustics cavities were investigated, such as simple waveguide, waveguide with geometric discontinuity and waveguide with discontinuity of the average properties. To this purpose, coupling relationships that represent those discontinuities are developed. A simulated example involving a closed rectangular acoustic cavity is analyzed with ESEM and the results are compared with those obtained by EFA, the Energy Finite Element Method (EFEM) and the acoustic analytical solution (SAA) of forced Helmholtz equation for rectangular two-dimensional closed cavities. An experimental investigation of acoustic response of a closed two-dimensional acoustic cavity was performed to verify the results of ESEM. The simulated models results, calculated in terms of energy variables, to analyze cavity, showed a good agreement with the experimental result / Doutorado / Mecanica dos Sólidos e Projeto Mecanico / Doutor em Engenharia Mecânica
