Performance and safety of centrifugal chillers using hydrocarbons.

Tadros, Amir, The University of New South Wales. School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
The high ozone depletion and global warming potentials of fluorocarbon refrigerants have resulted in prohibitions and restrictions in many markets. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have low environmental impacts and are successfully used in domestic refrigerators and car air conditioners but replacing fluorocarbons in centrifugal chillers for air conditioning applications is unknown. Hydrocarbon replacements need a heat transfer correlation for refrigerant in flooded evaporators and predictions for operating conditions, capacity and performance. Safety precautions for large quantities of hydrocarbon refrigerants are needed and control of overpressure in plantrooms requires accurate prediction. Reliable correlations exist for forced convection in a single phase flow, condensation outside tubes and evaporation off sprayed tubes. For flooded evaporators this thesis proposes a new correlation for forced convection boiling of any refrigerant. An enhancement factor is combined with a modified Chen coefficient using recent pool boiling and forced convection correlations outside tubes. This correlates within typically a factor of two to known boiling literature measurements for CFC-113, CFC-11, HCFC-123, HFC-134a and HC-601. The operating conditions, capacity and performance of replacement hydrocarbons in centrifugal chillers were predicted using fluorocarbon performance as a model. With the new heat transfer correlation hydrocarbon predictions for flooded evaporators were made. For any fluorocarbon refrigerant there exists a replacement mixture of hydrocarbons which with a rotor speed increase about 40% gives the same cooling capacity in the same centrifugal chiller under the same operating conditions. For example replacing HCFC-123 in a flooded evaporator with HC-601/602 [90.4/9.6] and increasing the rotor speed by 43% will increase the coefficient of performance by 4.5% at the same cooling capacity. The maximum plantroom overpressure considered was from leakage and ignition of a uniform air/refrigerant mixture with maximum laminar burning velocity. Flow was modelled using a turbulence viscosity due to Launder and Spalding and turbulent deflagration using a reaction progress variable after Zimont. These partial differential equations were solved approximately for two and three dimensional geometries using finite volume methods from the Fluent program suite. Simple overpressure predictions from maximum flame area approximations agreed with Fluent results within 13.7% promising safe plantroom design without months of computer calculation.

An Experimental Study On Off Design Performance And Noise In Small Pumps

Sahin, Fatma Ceyhun 01 June 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis study is focused on experimentally investigating pump noise at design and off-design operations and its relations with pressure fluctuations. Small size pumps are placed in a semi-anechoic chamber and operated at various system conditions and various rotational pump speeds. Pump operational data, noise data and time dependent pressure data are recorded. Fast Fourier Transform spectra of noise and pressure data are compared. Coherence spectrum between sound pressure level and hydraulic pressures are obtained. Data processing, Fast Fourier Transform and cross correlation are conducted with specific software Soundbook SAMURAI. The experiments have indicated that system characteristics or pump size do not have any influence on the noise of pump. On the other hand, pump characteristics are found to be distinguishable by means of peak frequencies on the sound spectra which are proportional to blade passing frequency. Results of cross correlations also show that, pump outlet pressure is a more significant source of noise than pump inlet pressure.

Design And Qualification Of A Semi-anechoic Chamber And Investigation Into Noise Characteristics Of A Vacuum Vleaner

Kayhan, Cihan 01 May 2008 (has links) (PDF)
In this study a centrifugal fan is studied for noise characteristics and measurements in a semi- anechoic room. A semi-anechoic room is constructed inside Fluid Mechanics Laboratory of Mechanical Engineering Department has been qualified with respect to ISO 3745 standard. The fan characteristic is obtained as proposed in AMCA standards 210-75, by simply measuring the voltage and current of the motor during operation and calculating the power consumption of the assembly. Noise measurements are taken using two microphones attached to a multi-channel data acquisition and processing system in the semi anechoic room. Several different configurations of the vacuum cleaner with some parts removed or replaced systematically are considered during the noise measurements. Some of the results showed that the damping material placed inside the motor cover is proved to be very effective in noise reduction. Two different damping materials are examined for comparative evaluation.

Evaluation of time varying stresses in a Howden fan

van Mierlo, Tim, Żywalewski, Rafal January 2015 (has links)
In this work, the time varying stresses in a Howden axial flow fan are obtained by finite element analyses. Dynamic substructuring is used to obtain accurate values of the stresses in the threads of the blade shaft, the component which connects the blade with the hub. Three different global models are used to compare the influence of neglecting the fan shaft and the stiffness influence of the centrifugal force. The relative displacements, which are obtained from the global models, have been used as boundary condition in the detailed models. The detailed models are used to obtain the Von Mises stresses in the root of the threads of the blade shaft. Finally the results of the three global models are compared with experimental measured data provided by Howden. The experimental data results in the highest Von Mises stresses. The model with the fan shaft and the stiffness influence of the centrifugal force gives values for the Von Mises stresses which are approximately twenty percent lower. The model without the fan shaft results in the lowest stresses which are approximately forty percent lower than the stresses obtained using the measured data.

Test bed system for investigating the energy usage of variable speed drive systems.

Walker, Myles Larcome. January 2001 (has links)
As South Africa's electricity consumption increases, Eskom is promoting Demand Side Management (DSM) to aid control of both the electricity consumption and its more effective usage, thereby delaying the need to construct new power stations, which pose large economic and environmental problems. Eskom has investigated various DSM strategies, such as load shifting, co-generation, alternative fuels and energy efficient processes, and has targeted the areas of load shifting and energy efficiency as prime areas for energy savings as they are relatively inexpensive and easy to implement. Pumps and fans form a large part of the industrial load. By improving the power usage of these devices with the use of variable speed drives, large energy savings may be achieved. To enable the energy usage of industrial loads to be evaluated, a test bed system which enables a variable speed drive to be loaded with a configurable load, was constructed. The test bed system forms a tool for evaluating and demonstrating the energy savings that are possible, by replacing fixed speed drives with variable speed drives when controlling the flow rate of pumps and fans. Results from the test bed system show that by using variable speed operation of pumps and fans, some energy savings are achievable when compared to existing methods of flow control. The achievable energy savings are dependent on the system properties and the duty cycle of the pump or fan system. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2001.

Įcentrinių ir išcentrinių žmogaus akies sakadų tyrimas / Research of the Human Centripetal and Centrifugal Eye Saccades

Pocius, Edgaras 16 July 2014 (has links)
Bakalauro baigiamajame darbe tiriamas įcentrinių ir išcentrinių žmogaus akies sakadų tikslumas. Eksperimento metu, kompiuterio ekrane, horizontalia kryptimi per penkias fiksuotas padėtis, šuoline trajektorija judėjo žalias (0,25 laipsnio diametro) taškas. Tiriamųjų paprašyta žvilgsniu sekti šį tašką. Apdorojus gautus tyrimo duomenis pastebėta, kad tos pačios amplitudės įcentrinės sakados yra tikslesnės, nei išcentrinės. / In this Bachelor thesis accuracy of the centripetal and centrifugal human eye saccades was studied. During the experiment, on the computer screen, in horizontal direction within five fixed positions, the hopping green spot (diameter of 0,25 degrees) was moving. Subjects were instructed to follow this green spot with gaze. Processing the research data reported that the centripetal saccades is more accurate than the centrifugal of the same amplitude.
