Synthesis, Structure And Redox Catalytic Properties Of Pt And Pd Ion Substituted Ce1-xMxO2(M= Ti, Zr & Hf) Oxygen Storage Capacity Nano-materials

Baidya, Tinku 11 1900 (has links)
Three-way catalysis (TWC) involves simultaneous removal of the three pollutants (i.e., CO, NOx, and HCs) which led to the branch of auto-exhaust catalysis. CeO2 has become the main component of TWC catalyst because of its oxygen storage storage (OSC) property to supply oxygen under excess fuel condition and store oxygen under lean condition. Substitution of smaller isovalent cations like Ti4+, Zr4+ and Hf4+ ions in CeO2 forming Ce1-xMxO2 (M = Ti, Zr &Hf) solid solution enhance the OSC property. XRD along with EXAFS study showed that cations arrange in FCC lattice but oxygen coordination around metal ions is split into 4 + 4 coordination in Ce1-xMxO2 instead of ideal 8 coordination in CeO2. The longer Ce/Ti/Zr – O bonds are weakly bound and can be easily removed by H2 giving high OSC value than pure CeO2. Among the three OSC systems studied here, Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 showed exceptionally high OSC which lead to formation of a new a pyrochlore, Ce2Zr2O6.3. This compound is nearly metallic. Ce0.85-xTi0.15PtxO2- (x = 0.01 & 0.02) crystallizes in fluorite structure and Pt is ionically substituted with 2+ and 4+ oxidation states. H/Pt atomic ratio at 30 oC over Ce0.84Ti0.15Pt0.01O2- is 5 and over Ce0.99Pt0.01O2-δ is 4 against just 0.078 for 8 nm Pt metal particles. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon oxidation activity are much higher over Ce1-x-yTixPtyO2 (x= 0.15, y= 0.01, 0.02) compared to Ce1-xPtxO2 (x= 0.01, 0.02). Synergistic involvement of Pt2+/Pt0 and Ti4+/Ti3+ redox couples in addition to Ce4+/Ce3+ due to the overlap of Pt(5d), Ti(3d), and Ce(4f) bands near EF is shown to be responsible for enhanced redox property and higher catalytic activity. On substitution of Pd ion in Ce1-xTixO2, more lattice oxygen is found to be more labile than Pd in CeO2. The easy removal of oxygen from the more reducible Ti4+ containing support plays a major role in showing higher catalytic activity of this material for CO oxidation, N2O and NO reduction by CO. The catalyst shows 100% N2 selectivity  240 oC in NO+CO reaction. It has been shown that oxide ion vacancy creation created by removal of lattice oxygen by CO is responsible for dissociation of NO or N2O at a lower temperature. Ionicity of Pd2+ ion in different support could be varied by varying the ionicity of the oxide support itself. Rates of CO oxidation increases or activation energy decreases over Ce1-xPdxO2-δ, Ti1-xPdxO2-δ and Ce1-x-yMxPdyO2-δ (M = Ti, Zr, Hf ; x = 0.25, 0.4 ; y = 0.02) is increased with ionicity of Pd2+ ion. The substitution of Sn in CeO2 forming Ce1-xSnxO2 (x = 0.1-0.5) solid solution was prepared using tin oxalate precursor by solution combustion method. These oxides can be promising support for noble metals because of the Sn4+  Sn2+ redox couple in addition to Ce3+/Ce4+. The two electron process involved in the redox reaction of Sn as well as easy reducibility of Sn4+ to Sn2+ offers a far better redox catalytic system hitherto not reported. Ce1-xSnxO2 solid solutions as well as Pd ion substituted Ce1-xSnxO2 was prepared for the first time.

Characterisation of the ceria and yttria co-doped scandia zirconia, produced by an innovative sol-gel and combustion process

de Carvalho Tomás, Eduarda M. S. January 2010 (has links)
In the last decade new materials appeared that are candidates to be used as an electrolyte in a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell, SOFC. Some materials show high ionic conductivity but lack in important properties, such as mechanical stability or chemical compatibility with other materials in the fuel cell. Scandia Stabilised Zirconia, SSZ, became a possibility when the scandia price dropped with the opening of the Chinese and Russian markets. In the starting system Ce[subscript(x)]Y[subscript(0.2-x)]Sc₀.₆Zr₃.₂O[subscript(8-δ)], (0≤x≤0.2), scandia is introduced to improve conductivity and stabilise the cubic phase; yttria is introduced to fully stabilise the cubic phase and ceria to enhance conductivity lost with the introduction of yttria. The aim of this project is to develop a reliable new method to produce quality ceramics that are not strongly composition dependent, then to prepare a range of compositions and compare intrinsic properties without having to be concerned that poor sintering dominates conduction properties. This project can be divided in two sections, the first section the powder production method, the characteristics of the powders and its final products are in focus. In the second section the relation between electric characteristics and microstructure of the material is reported. In the first section, the effect of different compositions of the system Ce[subscript(x)]Y[subscript(0.2-x)]Sc₀.₆Zr₃.₂O[subscript(8-δ)], (0≤x≤0.2) is studied, in terms of structure, phase and microstructure. The nature, size and shape of the powders are discussed, and their effect on the final product. The sol-gel and combustion method gives the formation of hard agglomerates (shells), during the combustion, a wide range of grain sizes, between less than 1µm and 200 µm, and the formation of grains with non spherical shape. In this project, the sol-gel and combustion process and solid state method are also compared. In the second section of this project, AC Impedance measurements, as a function of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and time are discussed. The Arrhenius plot for all compositions shows two regions (high and low temperature) and the change of region occurs at 580 °C. At low temperatures there is a slight difference between compositions but this difference is less at high temperatures. The obtained ionic conductivity, at 350 °C, varies from 3.84×10⁻⁶ to 5.53×10⁻⁵ S/cm; at 700 °C, ionic conductivity from 0.013 to 0.044 S/cm. At low temperatures, the activation energy associated with bulk process is generally lower than grain boundary process; for example, the composition Ce₀.₁Y₀.₁Sc₀.₆Zr₃.₂O₇.₆₅ has an activation energy, for the bulk process, of 1.05 eV and an activation energy, for the grain boundary process, of 1.17 eV. For compositions with higher ceria content, activation energy, for bulk and grain boundary, have similar values. The AC impedance as function of oxygen partial pressure show that the amount of ceria introduced as an effect on the conductivity at low oxygen partial pressure. For the sample with no ceria in its composition, Y₀.₂Sc₀.₆Zr₃.₂O₇.₆₀, the conductivity does not vary significantly as the oxygen partial pressure is decreased; for oxygen partial of 0.21 atm, conductivity is 0.018 S/cm and when oxygen partial pressure is approximately 10⁻²⁴ atm conductivity is 0.018 S/cm. For the sample with a higher content of ceria, Ce₀.₁₂Y₀.₀₈Sc₀.₆Zr₃.₂O₇.₆₆, there is a decrease in conductivity while oxygen partial pressure decreases; and there is also the appearance of a semi-circle for lower oxygen partial pressures. For oxygen partial pressure approximately 0.21 atm, conductivity is 0.019 S/cm, but when oxygen partial pressure is decreased to 10⁻²⁴ atm conductivity decreases to 0.011 S/cm. AC impedance measurements as a function of annealing time at 600 °C were performed. Total conductivity is fairly stable, for all compositions, until 1800 hours but after this time, conductivity slowly decreases. Some compositions show a second semi-circle in the AC impedance spectra, either from the beginning, time equals 0 hours, or after some working hours. Here, the changes in conduction and conduction processes with time are discussed.

Electrochemical synthesis of CeO2 and CeO2/montmorillonite nanocomposites.

Wang, Qi 12 1900 (has links)
Nanocrystalline cerium oxide thin films on metal and semiconductor substrates have been fabricated with a novel electrodeposition approach - anodic oxidation. X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that as-produced cerium oxide films are characteristic face-centered cubic fluorite structure with 5 ~ 20 nm crystal sizes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study probes the non-stoichiometry property of as-produced films. Raman spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy have been applied to analyze the films as well. Deposition mode, current density, reaction temperature and pH have also been investigated and the deposition condition has been optimized for preferred oriented film formation: galvanostatic deposition with current density of -0.06 mA/cm2, T > 50oC and 7 < pH < 10. Generally, potentiostatic deposition results in random structured cerium oxide films. Sintering of potentiostatic deposited cerium oxide films leads to crystal growth and reach nearly full density at 1100oC. It is demonstrated that in-air heating favors the 1:2 stoichiometry of CeO2. Nanocrystalline cerium oxide powders (4 ~ 10 nm) have been produced with anodic electrochemical synthesis. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were employed to investigate lattice expansion phenomenon related to the nanoscale cerium oxide particles. The pH of reaction solution plays an important role in electrochemical synthesis of cerium oxide films and powder. Cyclic voltammetry and rotation disk electrode voltammetry have been used to study the reaction mechanisms. The results indicate that the film deposition and powder formation follow different reaction schemes. Ce(III)-L complexation is a reversible process, Ce3+ at medium basic pH region (7~10) is electrochemically oxidized to and then CeO2 film is deposited on the substrate. CE mechanism is suggested to be involved in the formation of films, free Ce3+ species is coordinated with OH- at high basic pH region (>10) to Ce2O3 immediately prior to electrochemically oxidation Ce2O3 to CeO2. CeO2 / montmorillonite nanocomposites were electrochemically produced. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy illustrate the retaining of FCC structure for cerium oxide. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry of composites indicate the insertion of montmorillonite platelets into the structural matrix of cerium oxide. Sintering study of the nanocomposites demonstrates that low concentration of montmorillonite platelet coordination into cerium oxide matrix increases crystal growth rate whereas high concentration of montmoillonite in nanocomposites retards the increase of crystallite size during the densification process.
