Change or be changed : understanding resilience in socio-technical systems

Taysom, Eloise January 2017 (has links)
The world we live in is increasingly complex, interconnected and unpredictable. We face social and technological challenges, which must be overcome through the maintenance and redesign of existing systems, as well as the design and integration of new systems. Each of these systems has stakeholders at different levels and across domains, from those governing societies, to technical experts working on well-defined tasks. These stakeholders generally want their system to survive, or even thrive, in the face of uncertainty and unexpected influences. To describe this desire, people, from politicians to CEOs, use the word resilience. Resilience is a term that is referred to across domains in academic and public discourse. However, the exact definition of resilience is elusive, and it is not clear how to apply resilience in the context of socio-technical systems. To design resilient systems, we must first be able to answer questions including: Does a resilient system change to accommodate influences or stay the same? If the system changes, where should this change take place? How do we decide which system, or sub-system, to make resilient and at what level of abstraction? In this research I show how we can answer these questions by eliciting, combining and contrasting the perspectives of multiple stakeholders of socio-technical systems. In order to talk to these stakeholders, in interviews and workshops, I had to overcome communication barriers. Communicating about resilience is challenging because the term means different things to different people, both within and across domains. In this research I use diagrams to develop our understanding of resilience as a concept, prompt discussions with stakeholders, represent examples of resilience, and compare stakeholder perspectives across domains. Using these diagrams, I present three characteristics of resilience that have emerged from the literature and empirical studies: resisting, recovering and changing in response to influences. I also show how resilience is framed by stakeholders’ perspectives and depends on how a system’s boundary, purpose and timescale is defined. The characteristics of resilience are related to system dimensions, structure and function, with a focus on the similarities and differences between social and technical sub-systems. This research contributes a new understanding of resilience in the context of design practice, which moves us closer towards being able to design resilient socio-technical systems.

Performing Knits

Heinesen, Sofie Frederikke Sølvhøj January 2022 (has links)
The broader intention of this work is to investigate knitted textiles as interactive pieces, where changeable qualities embedded in the knit design are activated through movement. The main objective is to provide a novel perspective of the role and perception of knitted materials in a performative context. Presenting a shift from previously seen static knitted material to incorporating knit design to create knitted pieces that have the opportunity to enhance and take part. Due to the moving body being an activator of the changeability embedded in the knitted textile design, the work has a strong connection to related fields such as contemporary dance and performance. The work is carried out through practice-based research, where experimentation both in terms of technical development of knit design and their performative possibilities are used to obtain knowledge. The interrelation between knit, changeability, performativity and movement are researched through a series of experiments. The result of this work provides a variety of knitted pieces, each with their unique properties in regards to changeability and performativity, as well as a film of a performance where one can experience the knitted pieces and their properties during movement.

Layered Illumination : Changeable expressions in woven textile using optic fibers.

Haapalainen, Norea January 2022 (has links)
This work sets out to explore changeability in woven expressions using optic fibers in an interior context for home environment. The primary motive is to investigate how optic fibers can change the expression of a woven textile through its color and placement in the structure. The work was conducted with a trial and error-method by sketching, weaving samples, etching the optic fibers, and exploring how the fibers changed the expression and properties of the woven textile. Experiments with displaying the textiles in the intended environment were conducted in order to experience the effect of color and expression changeability. With the optic fibers the expressions repurpose weave structures and patterns, connecting them to the craft of weaving. The result is three double woven textiles with two stages each, activated and unactivated. In the activated state, the optic fibers brings new expressions through color and pattern from a white textile, which is the unactivated stage.

Changeable and Privacy Preserving Face Recognition

Wang, Yongjin 23 February 2011 (has links)
Traditional methods of identity recognition are based on the knowledge of a password or a PIN, or possession factors such as tokens and ID cards. Such strategies usually afford low level of security, and can not meet the requirements of applications with high security demands. Biometrics refer to the technology of recognizing or validating the identity of an individual based on his/her physiological and/or behavioral characteristics. It is superior to conventional methods in both security and convenience since biometric traits can not be lost, forgotten, or stolen as easily, and it is relatively difficult to circumvent. However, although biometrics based solutions provide various advantages, there exist some inherent concerns of the technology. In the first place, biometrics can not be easily changed or reissued if compromised due to the limited number of biometric traits that humans possess. Secondly, since biometric data reflect the user's physiological or behavioral characteristics, privacy issues arise if the stored biometric templates are obtained by an adversary. To that end, changeability and privacy protection of biometric templates are two important issues that need to be addressed for widespread deployment of biometric technology. This dissertation systematically investigates random transformation based methods for addressing the challenging problems of changeability and privacy protection in biometrics enabled recognition systems. A random projection based approach is first introduced. We present a detailed mathematical analysis on the similarity and privacy preserving properties of random projection, and introduce a vector translation technique to achieve strong changeability. To further enhance privacy protection as well as to improve the recognition accuracy, a sorted index number (SIN) approach is proposed such that only the index numbers of the sorted feature vectors are stored as templates. The SIN framework is then evaluated in conjunction with random additive transform, random multiplicative transform, and random projection, for producing reissuable and privacy preserving biometric templates. The feasibility of the introduced solutions is well supported by detailed theoretical analyses. Extensive experimentation on a face based biometric recognition problem demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

WOVEN LIGHT INTERFERENCE : Exploring the design possibilities and potentials of dichroic filters using textile weaving techniques.

Jönsson, Elvira January 2021 (has links)
Woven Light Interference looks into the light and colour phenomenon interference in a textile design context. This is done by introducing dichroic filters to design structures and patterns when weaving. The experimental design research methodology was used to explore dichroic filters’ design possibility and potential, using a textile weaving technique for a spatial context. The final result is visually presented in a collection consisting of six woven textiles that have multiple expressions with internal and external effects. Together, they propose new methods of working with light and colour in the textile design, without incorporating electronics or being connected to wires, but rather change depending on the existing ambient light of a space.

External Force : exploring changeable expressions in woven structures when activated by wind and light

Andersson Wallbom, Selma January 2022 (has links)
This work places itself in the field of textile design, weaving and exploring the design of changeable expressions in textiles. The intention of this work is to design three textiles that interact with the environment in outdoor spaces to achieve changeable expressions. Weaving is chosen as a technique because of the possibility to achieve different qualities in the same piece of fabric. The material, structure and density in the weave determine the interaction between the textile and the external factors, such as wind and light. The parameters make the various parts of the textile react in different ways, for example, the looser the threads are attached in the weave, the more they move in the wind. The interaction between the surroundings and the material causes the textile to change expression in terms of color, pattern, and transparency. The textiles provide an interactive element to an outside space, where it can be used as either a decorative piece of with a functional purpose as room dividers. The project opens up to utilize the textile responsiveness to external forces in design, to create dynamic textiles which change in appearence.
