Essas são pinturas diferenciadas na arte colonial paulista, não encontram pares no território ao qual estão circunscritas e, por isso mesmo, devem ser preservadas e destacadas na história da arte nacional / This dissertation analyzes and compares the colonial paintings from the region of Diamantina and Serro in mid-north of Minas Gerais with paintings on the ceiling of the Church of the Third Order of Mogi das Cruzes’ Carmo in Sao Paulo. The studies carried out look to evaluate the possibilities of influence, even if only visual, of these paintings from Minas Gerais with the paintings in São Paulo. The paintings from Rota do Serro (MG) are classified as belonging to the cycles of the Baroque and Rococo painting from Minas Gerais. They are paintings that stands out in the art scene, where the architecture and the paintings integrate with the buildings ceiling, creating fanciful architectures toward the sky or showing us a heavenly vision, which grabs the viewers attention. The paintings from the Carmelites of Mogi das Cruzes have, visually, an intense relationship with the paintings of Minas Gerais, which indicates the artistic exchanges that took place among the painters. Documents collected from Minas Gerais’ archives helped to identify various data regarding the paintings that were used for analysis, information regarding the construction of paintings and especially the identification of the artists who worked on the mogianas paintings. From the artists who worked on the paintings in Sao Paulo, there is not, in Diamantina nor in the Serro any document that reveals its passage through the region, but this does not rule out the influence when comparing the formal and constituent elements of these works. These unique paintings of the colonial art in São Paulo, and wich there are no matching pairs in the territory to which they are confined, should be preserved and highlighted in the history of national art

Passionate transformation in vernicle images.

Hoffman, J. Starr 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis will examine the iconography of late-thirteenth- through fifteenth-century images of St. Veronica's veil, also known as vernicles. In the late Middle Ages, vernicle iconography changed from iconic representations of Christ's face toward graphic imagery of Christ's suffering during his Passion. These passionate transformations, as I have called them, were affected by the Roman Sudarium relic, popular devotion to Christ's suffering and humanity during his Passion, and the Catholic ritual of Mass. This thesis will consider how the function of vernicle images during Mass was reflected in their iconography throughout Europe between 1250 and 1500.

Spirituality and German Romanticism: the influence of Jakob Böhme on Novalis and Caspar David Friedrich

Busch, Mikhail 21 May 2020 (has links)
This Master’s thesis shall attempt to reconcile the notion of the spiritual with that of the aesthetic by focusing on the influence of 16th century German mystic Jakob Böhme, with the 19th century cultural movement of German Romanticism. Böhme’s mysticism outlined a spiritual paradigm that fused alchemy with Christianity wherein the properties of nature are inherently led by a spiritual desire towards unity with God. It is through the process of spiritual desire that unity unveils itself. Consequently, Böhme’s mysticism influenced later generations of spiritual thought, including German Romanticism. Within Romanticism, Friedrich von Hardenberg, know by his pen name Novalis, developed a philosophy and aesthetic theory that expanded away from the philosophical ideas of the Enlightenment. This new philosophy focused on the subjective experience and how revelation of the self was to be experienced through creative introspection, as a consequence of encountering and interacting with the other. Novalis‘ philosophy incorpterated religious motifs and spirituality to assert that it was through creative striving that spiritual revelation was to be achieved from within oneself. Caspar David Friedrich was a Romantic landscape painter whose work focused on the notion of humanity in the face of nature. Friedrich often painted landscapes as an allegory for Christian values and religious inquiry that becomes an existential introspection through nature. Through comparative analysis I shall demonstrate how the ideas and works of Novalis and Caspar David Friedrich correlate with the spiritual mysticism of Böhme that represent the greater discourse that is spirituality itself. / Graduate / 2021-04-24

Sun-symbolism and cosmology in Michelangelo's Last Judgment

Shrimplin-Evangelidis, Valerie January 1991 (has links)
A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1991 / Although the perception of the design of Michelangelo's Last Judgment as dependent upon a basically circular composition around the figure of Christ has generally been observed in the literature, no sailsfactory explanation of this has been presented. In the following hypothesis, a cosmological interpretation of Michelangelo's Last Judgment proposes new sources for the circular design of the fresco around a central Apollonian Sun-Christ. After. an outline of the basic nature of the problem, an examination of earlier examples of the Last Judgment demonstrates the cosmological associations of the traditional iconography of the subject, primarily related to the hierarchical implications! of the 'flat-earth theory,' which places Heaven above and Hell beneath the earth's surface. Close formal analysis of Michelangelo's own version of the Last Judgment, which emphasizes the innovative aspects of its organisation, is then followed by an assessment of various existing interpretations of the work. In then examining the type of Sources which appear likely to have contributed to the final programme of the work, different areas of religious, literary and philosophical material are brought under consideration. In order to resolve the meaning of the fresco's iconography and composition, the influences upon Michelangelo of the Catholic religion and Reform thought, of the writings of Dante, and of Florentine Neoplatonism have been examined in an entirely new way, from a cosmologicalpoint of view, which brings to light their common emphasis on the Sun as a eymbol of the Deity. A new area of potential source material, that of contemporary scientific cosmology, has also been considered. Prevailing knowledge of Copernicus' theory of the Sun-centred universe, hitherto dismissed as a possible direct influence by renowned writers like Charles de Tolnay, on the grounds of chronology, is specifically discussed and found to be securely documented in Vatican circles at the time of the commission. Thus the sources finally proposed for the overall theme of Sun-symbolism and Cosmologyin the fresco are found to 'be dependent upon the common. ground shared between the Catholic Reformation revival of the traditional Christian analogy between the Deity and the Sun, the Neoplatonic cult of Sun-symholism, literary sources in Dante and the scientific theory of heliocentricity, as developed by Copernicus. Against this background of the History of Ideas in the Renaissance period, consideration of art historical methods leads to the suggestion of a newly proposed Biblical source for the fresco and, finally)l discussion of the deductive method of art historical intterpretation suggests the broader implications of the hypothesls, Ii both for the life and work at Michelangelo himself as well as for the/! sixteenth-century 'context of the fresco's creation. / MT2017

Minerva Teichert's Murals: The Motivation for her Large-Scale Production

Wardle, Marian Eastwood 01 January 1988 (has links) (PDF)
It is my thesis that the impetus for Minerva Teichert's prolific mural production came from the lofty ideals of the Beaux Art mural tradition which she encountered and embraced during her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1909 to 1912. Furthermore, it was the great interest in mural decoration during the 1930s, spurred by government patronage, that provided Teichert with the opportunity to apply these ideals to large-scale works. Research into the Beaux Art mural tradition has been difficult, as recent scholarship on the subject is negligible. An understanding of this early mural movement however, yields a greater understanding of later mural production in America. I am convinced that not only Teichert, but other muralists of the 1930s, were motivated by Beaux Art ideals.
