no / City Park opened in early 2012 and despite some on-going criticism, during the summer the site drew thousands of people to the heart of Bradford and was the scene of much relaxed and good natured conviviality amongst socially diverse groups. As a new and unique public space in Bradford and a focal point for the city, a number of staff from the Centre for Applied Social Research believed researching City Park to be a fruitful endeavour to help promote a dialogue with the public and other sectors about living together in Bradford.

Kdo má právo na Petřín: veřejný park v perspektivě symetrické antropologie / Who has the right to Petřín: public park in the perspective of symmetrical anthropologyStulíková, Vlasta January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis, which is based on one-year participant observation in Petřín (a public park in the centre of Prague), is to approach key processes for creating and maintenance of this space in symmetrical-anthropological way. The park is not consider to be mere static background for human interaction, but, reversely, hybrid dynamical process created through a wide actor-web of both material and immaterial matter. The park is not just a public, thus human, space but a space shared by a great variety of actors. Among this hybrid actors human is the one who holds the power over park management, who can include, or reversely, exclude chosen actors from participation and maintenance of this space. The author of this thesis tries to answer the question: What is the basis for this kind of decisions? Who shall be given the "right to Petřín"? From which power position? The author argues that these decisions are politicised in all cases because there is no possibility to describe the complicated reality of Petřín in exhaustive scientific way and make ever-lasting claims about it. For this reason, all those decisions originate in historically particular context. As a consequence of some actors exclusion there is a threat of dissolution of both cultural and biological diversity of this space. Key words:...

Exploring youth’s nature values and desirable future visions of the Royal National City Park in Stockholm / Exploring youth’s nature values and desirable future visions of the Royal National City Park in StockholmThiel, Hannah January 2023 (has links)
As human activity continues to cause significant global issues, such as the decline of biodiversity, there is an increasing demand to engage with desirable visions of the future. Sustainability research emphasizes the significance of participatory approaches prioritizing nature and incorporating diverse human-nature relationships to promote more inclusive and sustainable paths to a positive future. However, the involvement of youth in current future studies is limited. Urban national parks provide valuable opportunities to investigate people-nature relations and their future. This study conducted a participatory futures workshop that combined the Natures Futures Framework and the Three Horizons Framework with fifteen young individuals living in Stockholm to capture their diverse nature relationships and positive future visions of the Royal National City Park in Stockholm. The workshop identified several aspects of nature in the park appreciated by the group, such as biodiversity, calmness, and the opportunity for recreation and connection to nature. If those values are projected onto a desirable future, this group of youth envisions the park to include reduced pollution, increased biodiversity, stronger protection and regulation, and prioritization of nature, with societal involvement and better accessibility. To support value-inclusive decision-making for the sustainable future of the Royal National City Park, collected values and visions were shared with park stakeholders. By collecting diverse nature value perspectives on a local scale using the Nature Futures Framework, this work contributes to the generation of a global perspective of desirable nature futures. While the Natures Futures Framework proved effective in generating rich value perspectives, a reflection survey revealed that not all participants found the framework easy to understand, particularly the difference between the different value perspectives presented in the framework. In conclusion, this study provides insights into possible futures and inspires actions toward a sustainable future where humans and nature coexist in harmony.

Beyond the Park at the Horse Farm : exploring best practices in public-private partnerships to improve Lafayette's growing park systemBrooks, Elizabeth Tarleton 17 February 2015 (has links)
Municipalities throughout the country are increasingly seeking out innovative partnerships with the private sector to acquire, operate, and/or maintain public parks. An example of this is found in Lafayette, Louisiana, where Lafayette Consolidated Government recently purchased a 100-acre farm from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and collaborated with community leaders to form a public-private partnership with a new non-profit, Lafayette Central Park, Inc. This entity is currently undertaking the necessary steps to lease, plan, design, fund, build, operate, and maintain a new community park on the property. This report explores the history of public-private partnerships found within park administration, as well as the myriad legal, organizational, and financial structures in place within those partnerships. The research also highlights potential benefits and drawbacks to these partnerships, found within four case studies in the Southeast, as well as through precedents found in previous research. The four case studies are Audubon Park and City Park in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Memorial Park and Discovery Green in Houston, Texas. The insights, challenges, and best practices found through the examination in this report are used to create a series of recommendations for the fledgling non-profit organization, Lafayette Central Park, for both short-term and long-term success. / text

The observation of environmental degradation, especially by human action, provokes reflections regarding the finitude of resources available on the planet and their conservation, and points to the need for an understanding among peoples that surpasses the discourse of scarcity and brings the debate to itself Society-nature relationship; After all, understanding the environmental issue means thinking about a world differentiated by distinct social practices and diverse historical and cultural values given to the environment, generating often conflicting uses. In this context, the objective of this study is to evaluate the recent municipal redevelopment project of the City Park of Salvador, in terms of compliance with environmental legislation and propose a way of minimizing possible environmental damages. The method used was exploratory juridical-sociological research, whose object is the analysis of the legal norm in the context of the social reality in which it is manifested and using the deductive reasoning, covering the collection and analysis of documents, laws and jurisprudence. The work covered the history and definition of public space, with the formation of Joventino Silva Park, as well as the legal issues involved, through the analysis of Brazilian environmental legislation, legal theory, guiding principles of the Federal Constitution and the history of the evolution of Preservation and conservation on the world stage, as well as examples of environmental damage. Based on hypothetical proof of non-attendance of the municipal project to requalify the Park to the prerogatives of environmental legislation, which would be obtained through a civil inquiry, the work presents an indicative for a future Public Civil Action, with the effect of Term of Adjustment of Conduct, Which may be proposed by the Public Prosecutor's Office in detriment of the Municipal Government of Salvador, in order to compensate for environmental damages. This proposal for an action letter is adequate to the profile of the Environmental Professional Master. In this sense, we sought to offer the citizen legal procedures available, regarding the minimization of environmental damage, especially when caused by agents or public agencies, which has the duty to watch over the natural and artificial environment, ensuring a healthy environment for future generations.
