GUITAR ARRANGEMENTS OF SELECTED DANZAS OF JUAN F. ACOSTA, WITH NEW CONSIDERATIONS OF HIS MUSIC AND MUSICAL LIFE

Ruiz Mestre, Hermelindo 01 January 2018 (has links)
Juan Francisco Acosta (1890-1968) was a prolific composer, band conductor, and educator from Puerto Rico who created 1,256 original compositions. Even though his activities and influence were integral to the musical life of Puerto Rico in the twentieth century, many details of his life and works remain unknown. This project centers on Acosta’s contribution to the Puerto Rican tradition of the danza—a dance-based genre originating in the nineteenth century—through the study and arrangement of five of Acosta's danzas. Although Acosta composed most danzas for piano, he adapted them for performances by the municipal bands that he led in various towns. This practice of modifying his works for different instruments, as well as the importance of the guitar in Latin America, underpins the author’s choice to arrange his piano music for varied types of guitar combinations, including solo, duo, trio, and quartet. The five works are Bajo la sombra de un pino, Mercedes, Eres una santa, Dulce María, and In memoriam. The guitar arrangements of these five danzas are preceded by important information on the composer within the Puerto Rican music world, with emphasis on the intersections of the band and danza traditions. To enhance the study of these works, this document discusses basic stylistic features, including a comparison of forms, rhythms, and dance characters, and relates Acosta's treatment of the danza puertorriqueña to approaches of his Puerto Rican contemporaries. This document also includes performance guidelines to introduce Acosta's danza style to student and professional players. Based on primary biographical and musical sources, this study presents a foundation for a clearer understanding of the life and works of Acosta upon which further research, analysis, and criticism can be conducted. The arrangements offer a fresh look at new guitar repertoire using the peculiarities of rhythms and traditions of Puerto Rican and Carribean heritage. The arrangements also serve a pedagogical purpose by adding to the existing repertoire of ensemble music for the classical guitar.

This dissertation deals with musical interpretation and discussses the practical application of theorical principles in Francisco Mignone's Twelve Studies for Guitar. The body of this paper is sstrucstured in two sections. The first focuses on the theoretical foundations of the musical interpretarion, in main trends, Luigi Pareyson's theory of formativity, as well as some complementary concepts by Umberto Eco on the limits of interpretarion. The second section contains a bibliographic revision about researches on the Mignone's guitar output, an overview of this compositions for guitar on the seventies, and commemtaries about de genesis of his Twelve Studies, philological aspacts and general considerations about the different versions of this work. There is also apractical application of the concepts discussed in the first chapter, presenting the didactic contribuitions of Mignone's Studies, including some solutions fo difficult passages and some interpretative suggestions for this work. The final considerations are an attempt to answer the questions presented in the introduction, but nor in a conclusive way, since we consider that the model of interpretation presented here inonlu one amongst many others. The annexes contain a Double Edition of Mignone's Twelve Studies (the original version and our Urtext), complete interviews, and a CD with our interpretation of this work, a a practical result of a research which was guided by the theoretical reflection.

Solo lyra viol music of Tobias Hume (c. 1579-1645): Historical context and transcription for modern guitar.

Amelkina-Vera, Olga 08 1900 (has links)
The seventeenth century in England produced a large and historically significant body of music for the viola da gamba played "lyra-way." Broadly defined, playing "lyra-way" on the viol meant playing from tablature notation in a polyphonic style. Most players of plucked strings such as lute and guitar are familiar with tablature and, as a result, have a decisive advantage when attempting to explore this music. Other factors that make lyra viol repertory potentially attractive to the modern guitarist are its chordal textures, similarities in physical properties of the instruments, and many points of connection regarding the principles of left hand technique. The purpose of this study is two-fold: 1) to illuminate the historical and cultural context of the seventeenth-century English lyra viol music in general and that of Tobias Hume (c. 1579-1645) in particular; and 2) to present an idiomatic transcription for the modern guitar of four representative pieces from Hume's 1605 collection Musicall Humours. Musicall Humours, published in London in 1605, is one of the first and most significant collections of music for the lyra viol. The collection is both ambitious and groundbreaking, being the largest repertory of solo music for the lyra viol by a single composer in the early seventeenth century. Since the modern guitar, although not as contrapuntally facile as the keyboard, is nevertheless capable of executing two- or three-voice polyphony, reconstruction of the polyphonic implications of solo lyra viol music becomes the first step in creating an idiomatic arrangement. The differences in acoustical properties and technical capabilities between the viol and the modern guitar have to be taken into consideration when deciding on the degree to which harmony must be filled in. Generally, thinner textures of the lyra viol music, when transferred directly to the guitar, tend to sound incomplete. The arranger's musical sensitivity and intimate familiarity with both instruments must guide the final stages of the transcription process.

Kreativitets-fontänen : Gitarr som kompositionsverktyg/Att kunna "tala" toner

Marcimain Klintberg, Loella January 2001 (has links)
Musikhögskolan i Stockholm. / The purpose of my artistic degree project is to develop my music making as a classical guitarist. It has been implemented in the study by immersing myself in composer and guitarist Roland Dyens’ (1955-2016) work Libra Sonatine with a particular focus on the first movement I. India (1986). In doing so, I have researched and evaluated methods for applying the guitar as a compositional tool. I have based my own composition on the story of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), a short novel written by the british author Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894). The piece I’ve written is for guitar and violin and is being performed at my graduation concert on the 1st of June 2023 in the Nathan Milstein-hall at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. I consider Roland Dyens a great source of inspiration for guitarists as well composers. His sound-philosophy and ability to paint a musical piece with only his fantasy as a limit becomes clear in his piece Libra Sonatine, where rhythm, harmony and melody share equal importance. / <p>Due Canzoni Lidie, 1. Johann Sebastian Bach's Partita for Solo Flute, BWV 1013 Transcribed and Arranged for Guitar: A Musico-Rhetorical Performance Guide

Burns, Bryan Keith 08 1900 (has links)
The main purpose of this dissertation is to offer classical guitarists an additional analytical technique for interpreting and performing the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. While this mode of analysis can be successfully applied to any of the instrumental works by Bach frequently transcribed and performed by guitarists, I have chosen for this study my recent transcription of the Partita in A minor for solo flute traverso, BWV 1013. With a continuo-based, harmonic realization of the Partita, I contribute to the existing guitar repertoire by offering a new transcription of this work, while demonstrating how historical concepts of rhetorical structure and aesthetics found in relevant primary source material can inspire a new approach to analysis, transcription, and performance practice. In this way, my investigations create additional perspectives for classical guitarists regarding the analysis and performance of this work, while complementing traditional harmonic analysis and subject labeling. Although it is my hope that this new transcription of the Partita will serve as an important contribution to the existing literature, the main purpose of this dissertation resides in the musico-rhetorical analytical technique and its implications on performance practice for classical guitarists.

Lavoie, Maryse 06 1900 (has links)
This thesis is about the lexicon of timbre descriptors, its definitions, and teaching strategies regarding sound production of the classical guitar. Our methodology is based on mixed methods research, in that it combines both qualitative and quantitative data, while our methods are derived from different disciplines. This research is grounded in musicology of performance and focuses more specifically on the conceptualization of classical guitar timbral nuances by classical guitar players. The design of this research is based on three separate studies. The first study focuses on the analysis of adjectives used to describe timbral nuances and their definitions from classical guitarists. The results demonstrate that the construction of the lexicon of timbre descriptors relates primarily to matter, thus reinforcing the concept of timbre as sound matter. Regarding the interaction between timbre and other sound parameters, a discourse and emergent themes analysis has revealed the importance of register, intensity and duration in the definition of timbre. The implementation of a second questionnaire helped to define further the characteristics of the timbre descriptor vocabulary of the classical guitar. The distribution of lexical categories showed that adjectives often refer to a metaphorical timbre description while nouns essentially give an account of the instrumental technique. To define timbral nuances, classical guitarists commonly use sound parameters, production modes and other descriptors of timbre. Following those results, a terminological dictionary of 8 timbral nuances (metallic, round, bright, thin, dry, velvety, dark and dull) was also proposed. Finally, the development of a semantic space of timbre from the evaluation of semantic proximity between those 8 timbre descriptors reveals two main axis, the first is defined by the presence of the attack and the plucking position, while the second refers to the resonance, the projection and the value judgment. The third and final study examines the communication strategies used in the context of two master classes. The results of our analysis highlight the use of three main ways to explain the sound production and to characterize the musical performance. The participating professors have recourse to verbal explanation, instrumental demonstration as well as vocalization or imitation. Our research has demonstrated that the conceptualization of timbre nuances refers to matter, sound parameters, metaphorical descriptions, as well as production modes. Such an inclusive conceptualization allows access to all the subtleties of the production and perception of classical guitar. In regards to communication, timbral nuances are expressed by verbalization, performance as well as vocalization or imitation.

Rego, Eusiel Silva do 05 October 2012 (has links)
This paper aims at addressing the aesthetic, musical and historical concepts (related to the Enlightenment) that involve the guitar transcriptions \"Six Airs Choisis de l\'Opéra de Mozart: \"Il flauto magico, arrangés pour guitare\" Op. 19 by Spanish composer and guitarist Fernando Sor (1778-1839), published between the years 1823 to 1825, in London, and based in Mozart\'s Die Zauberflöte k620 (The Magic Flute). The transcription\'s process undertaken by Fernando Sor required, even for historical purposes (the compositions were created 35 years apart), a change in the concept of instrumental writing. For Sor, it was a question of translating the essence of the musical thought conceived in an operatic way and presenting it under a sonorous concept of an emerging, solo instrument as had been the case of the guitar in the late 18th century and in the first decades of the 19th century. From the instrumental perspective, therefore, elements such as texture, style of accompaniment and the voice leading concept, to name but a few, have undergone conceptual changes, often resulting almost in a new composition and even a different perception of the musical form since, above all, the elements of drama and literature are absent.

Alípio, Alisson Cardoso Monteiro January 2014 (has links)
This work deals with the investigation of the methodological principles necessary to the process of elaborating guitar fingerings. To this end, fingering parameters are converted into a protocol of instances (exposure of the cases, application of the commands, assessment of the circumstances, management of the consequences and judgment of the conditions), which are mediated by principles and surrounded by perspectives, thus forming a fingering scenario. Through a process of inference, we conclude that the sound fluency, independently of aesthetic positioning, is a basic condition for a satisfactory performance on guitar; by deduction, we have seen that the ability to play legato is the main element of this ideal. We also verified that fingering is, in terms, a matter of personal choice because all its instances are dialectical interaction between subject and object; but not completely so, because each instance is governed by principles which do not concern exclusively the individual. We note, finally, that the construction of a fingering scenario is not a way to find the best fingering, but, to seek it, because the basic principle on which it operates is the organization of acknowledgments that the performer mobilizes in his process.
