Collins

Βαγενάς, Γεώργιος 09 October 2014 (has links)
The current thesis discusses the construction and calibration of Meek and Collins probe for electric field measurements.

Likhetsteorin : En teoretisk utveckling av Collins interaktionsritualer / Similarity Theory : A Theoretical Development of Collins’ Interaction Rituals

Aronson, Olov January 2014 (has links)
The subject of the thesis originates in the discovery of a pattern in Collins’ theory of interaction rituals. The pattern indicates that several important ideas and concepts in Collins’ theory can be conceived as individuals’ experiences of similarity. Based upon the discovery of this pattern, the aim of the thesis is to develop the basic features of a new theory that explains interaction rituals by centering upon individuals’ experiences of similarity. In order to accomplish the aim, the essay discusses four aspects of interaction rituals. In connection to the first aspect, an explanation is presented that reveals why individuals who experience similarity give each other support in their interaction rituals. Discussing the second aspect, the concept of effervescence of similarity is presented, which explains why experiences of similarity are crucial for generating emotional energy in interaction rituals. When developing the third aspect, a complete description of similarity theory is presented. Similarity theory explains interaction rituals by referring to individuals’ experiences of similarity. Finally, in the discussion of the fourth aspect, similarity theory is tested against empirical research. The concluding sections argue for ways in which similarity theory may contribute considerably to the understanding of interaction rituals. Also, suggestions for further research are presented.

The world is hard on women : women and marriage in the novels of Wilkie Collins

Beaton, R. January 1987 (has links)
'The World is Hard on Women'; Women and Marriage in the Novels of Wilkie Collins" examines the ways in which Collins sympathetically explores the situations of women in relation to marriage and to society in general. Each of the first five chapters deals with a particular topic relating to women and marriage, showing how these topical themes recur and develop through Collins's novels. Chapter One, "Marriage, Money and Power", looks at mercenary marriages in which husbands exploit there wives, or in which wives attempt to exploit their husbands. Chapter Two, "The Magdalen Theme", examines Collins's treatment of the question of "fallen" women, and his different attempts to plead for the reintegration of such women back into the fabric of conventional society. Chapter Three, "Marriage Breakdowns", discusses the situation of women who find themselves deserted by their husbands, and facing a hostile and Judgemental reaction from their social peers. Chapter Four, "Unmarried Women", shows Collins's sympathetic portrayal of diminution of power and importance of those women who either choose not to, or who are unable to marry. Chapter Five, "Widows" discusses the role played by widows as trustees of male power, and guardians to the younger generation. Chapter Six, "The Fallen Leaves", draws on the material discussed in the first five chapters in order to make a detailed examination of Collins's extensive treatment of topics related to women and marriage in The Fallen Leaves. The thesis concludes that Collins was very aware of, and radically sympathetic to the problems faced by women in Victorian society, and that this sympathy and knowledge form an important feature of his writing.

A study of certain factors which should be considered in the development of the school program in Collins, Georgia

Unknown Date (has links)
The writer of this study served as assistant principal and classroom teacher in the public schools for white children in Collins, Georgia, during the school tern of 1950-51. Occupying the dual position of carrying out certain delegated administrative responsibilities and teaching four classes daily afforded opportunity not only for recognizing the school's problems, but to get the viewpoints of the pupils toward the school. A study of the school records revealed that large numbers of pupils leave school before graduation, but there the record ends. There is no information as to what became of the pupil in later life. / Typescript. / "Submitted to the Graduate Council of Florida State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Education."

Φραγκούλης, Βασίλειος 09 October 2014 (has links)
The present diploma thesis is devoted to the acquisition of voltage, current, electric field, and emitted light waveforms during the application of impulse voltages to a non-uniform rod-to-plane gap. The main claim of this work is the study of the prebreakdown effects in a rod-to-plane gap by means of an electric field measuring probe (Meek-Collins), and the simultaneous acquisition of current and light signals for confirming the probe functionality. In the first chapter, the appropriate theoretical background related to the breakdown mechanisms of gas gaps (both uniform and non-uniform) is provided. The statistical analysis of experimental results for gap characterization is also mentioned. In the second chapter, the experimental setup and the equipment used are presented. The fundamental principle and the construction details of the Meek-Collins probe are emphasized. In the third chapter, the process followed and the experimental results are analyzed. Eventually, in the fourth chapter, the conclusions of this work are briefly presented. The present diploma thesis is inter-related to the one of Mr George Vagenas, whose work was realized in the High Voltage Laboratory on the construction and calibration of the Meek-Collins probe used herein. In practice, both theses were carried out in parallel.

Illegitimacy in the Mid-Victorian Novels of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins

Hansen, Tessa Louise January 2006 (has links)
The fiction of Dickens and Collins abounds with references to the illegitimate. In the mid-Victorian period there is an increase in illegitimate characters and circumstances which relates both to the topicality of the issue and to events in the authors individual and collaborative private lives. Illegitimacy addresses personal and social anxieties in four major novels of the 1850s and 1860s: Bleak House (1852-53), Little Dorrit (1855-57) by Dickens and The Woman in White (1860) and No Name (1862) by Collins. Dickens analyses illegitimacy in Bleak House psychologically and socially through Esther Summerson, but her narrative reveals contradictions between Dickens challenge of contemporary attitudes towards the illegitimate and his subscription to the moral code behind the views. In Little Dorrit Dickens confines his study of illegitimacy to character in order to examine the psychological consequences of illegitimacy on the individual. The novel suggests that illegitimacy is another form of social and legal imprisonment. In contrast in The Woman in White Collins exploits the sensationalism surrounding illegitimacy by using it to create an exciting plot at the inception of the sensation genre. His suggestion in this novel that bastards are legally blank and able to reconstruct their identity is continued in No Name; this later novel directly challenges the laws defining and controlling illegitimacy. While Collins never matches Dickens integration of social and moral issues into the novel s structure, the older author appreciated Collins strength in creating detective narratives. Illegitimacy was relevant to the private lives of both Dickens and Collins in the period. While the authors always tried to keep their public and private lives separate, their romantic relationships reveal a personal motive for discussing the plight of the illegitimate in their novels. There is a distinct possibility that Dickens had an illegitimate child with his mistress Ellen Ternan while Collins had three illegitimate children with Martha Rudd. The novels articulate the tension between what Dickens and Collins the authors were trying to achieve and what the novels themselves disclose.
