A study of the contribution of variables related to companion animals on positivityDieker Larson, Erica Dawn January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Special Education, Counseling and Student Affairs / Fred O. Bradley / The broaden-and-build theory posits that frequently experiencing positive emotions leads to broadened awareness and functioning, and over time, built resources. These resources function as reserves during difficult times. Considering recommendations for increasing positive emotions and findings regarding human-animal interactions, it is reasonable to expect that companion animals might function in a manner to increase positive emotions. Many people have companion animals, and they are a preventative, natural intervention without associated stigmas. Therefore, knowing more about how companion animals impact their humans has practical implications for mental health professionals. The current study investigated various aspects of human-animal interactions that are conceivably related to positive emotions (human-animal bond and amount of time spent with animal) in different configurations (people with and without companion animals; people with dogs, cats, and horses), while considering potential confounds (time spent with humans in connected interactions and time spent outside). Time spent in connected interactions with other humans is the only variable that predicted positivity, and this was only in people without companion animals. This is consistent with previous findings that interacting with other people is related to positive emotions.

Factors Influencing the Performance of Bromoxynil 4(2,4-DB), or a Companion Crop for Weed Control in Seedling AlfalfaLeavitt, Ferrin D. 01 May 1970 (has links)
Some of the factors influencing the performance of bromoxynil, 4(2,4-DB), or a companion crop for weed control in seedling alfalfa were studied in the greenhouse and at field locations in Farmington and Logan , Utah. The effect of application rate , stage of growth, temperature, and soil moisture on the phytotoxicity of bromoxynil and 4(2,4-DB) to alfalfa and weeds were studied.
Alfalfa yields were increased by 4(2,4-DB) at all rates and stages of application. All rates and stages of bromoxynil treatment except the one-fourth pound per acre three to four trifoliate application resulted in alfalfa yields below that of the control.
The use of a companion crop was not conducive to the growth and development of alfalfa although it did control the weeds . Bromoxynil at all rates and at both stages of application resulted in effective mustard control. Mustard control in the 4(2,4- DB) plots was excellent at the early stage of application but required three- fourths pound per acre for control at the later stage of weed growth . Pigweed control was rather ineffective in bromoxynil plots at Logan where moisture was optimum, but effective in plots at farmington where moisture was limited for 18-20 days following application. The density of the pigweed stand in bromoxynil treatments at Logan was attributed to an influx of weed growth following initial control of weeds . Control of pigweed by 4(2 , 4- DB) was in excess of 90 percent at the four to five leaf stage of weed growth.

Gendered Trends in Piano Performance: A Study of Women PianistsEdwards, Emiko Janice January 2022 (has links)
This paper addresses gendered trends in piano performance. It covers the New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania region between 1950 and 2019. There are numerous sources from throughout this region that are thoroughly archived (the New York Times, New York Philharmonic programs, The Etude, Clavier Companion/Piano Magazine, WNCN-FM broadcasts) that make this district an excellent candidate for case study. The second chapter explores gender representation in New York Philharmonic Subscription Season Concerts. It measures and compares the rates at which women and men pianists play different composers. The third chapter analyzes the New York Times reviews of women pianists who have performed in the New York Philharmonic Subscription Season Concerts. It focuses on how often reviewers utilize gendered language in relation to the composer being performed.
Though the fourth chapter also covers repertoire and gender representation in The Etude and Clavier Companion/Piano Magazine CD/record releases, it centers primarily on the existence of gendered narratives within pedagogical resources. Similarly, the fifth chapter, explores trends in interview topics (clothing choices, sound production, children: to have or not to have?) that are specific to the woman pianist’s experience.
Though limited in focus, this paper serves as a window into the impact that gendered thinking has had on the twentieth and twenty-first century woman pianist. / Music Performance

Family Communication About Companion Animal Death and Dying: A Systems ApproachSara Kaufman (13171914) 29 July 2022 (has links)
<p>Humans and domesticated animals have lived alongside one another for thousands of years, yet scholars have only recently begun to examine how companion animals, or pets, influence human lives (Knight, 2005). Today, 67 percent of United States households contain companion animals (APPA, 2019-2020) and many people consider their pets as family (Irvine & Cilia, 2017; McConnell et al., 2019). Given this, the death and dying period for pets can bring about distinctive concerns and difficulties within the family system, yet little is known about how individuals navigate the pet end-of-life period within the family, and how family communication manifests in this context. This study aimed to understand the interactional challenges for families communicating about the end-of-life period for their pets. Guided by family systems theory (FST) as an analytic framework, the goal was to better understand these dynamics using qualitative methods to address two main research questions. First, what are the challenges families face during the companion animal death and dying period? And second, how do families respond communicatively to these challenges? This qualitative study used a grounded theory approach to analyze 27 in-depth interviews with individuals who had experienced a death of their pet in the prior year and centered on how families described the place of their pets within the system. Of those participants, 14 individuals consisted of family dyads (51%) in various subgroups of partners, parent-child and siblings. Analysis affirmed some of what is known from the literature (such as feelings of guilt and financial worries associated with pet end-of-life) but also extended what is known by documenting family decision-making dilemmas, such as the dialectic tension between holding on and letting go, as well as noting the reverberations through the family of avoiding talk about death and disruptions to family communication after death. This manifested in primarily a decrease in talk about the pet or talk with family members (both in-person and mediated channels) or an increase in talk following the death. These findings suggest that pet death has the potential to disrupt a family's regular communication patterns.</p>
<p>These findings affirmed that supportive communication after a death loss is important to individuals and particularly helpful from others with prior pet loss experience. Along with social support, participants indicated that the artifacts left behind after the death of their pet provided comfort and were also elements of tension and cohesion within the system. As scholars suggest, companion animals are liminal creatures, existing as kin and "other" within the family (Irvine & Cilia, 2017; Sayers et al. 2022). Indeed, participants described their pets as existing in a space at the edge of true family member whose fate was exclusively in the hands of the family, particularly in the context of euthanasia, which contributed to some of the communicative challenges identified. </p>
<p>Given limitations of a mostly regional and homogenous sample and the conceptual limitation of extrapolating from two individuals in a family to the whole system, this study was still able to take the next step needed for understanding the communicative challenges faced by families in confronting pet death. Findings extend the concept of pet-as-family, in that pets were found to be an element of the "family tapestry" serving the role of both emotional support and kin for some family members. In that manner, they were also discovered as integral to the family timeline, a catalyst for connection between family members, and thus worthy of further study from a communication and family system perspective.</p>

Comparison of abdominal computed tomography to ultrasound in the diagnosis of canine biliary disease manifesting as acute abdominal signsMarroquin, Shanna Christine 13 May 2022 (has links)
Biliary diseases are uncommon, potentially fatal causes of acute abdomen in dogs. Little information is present comparing the performance of computed tomography (CT) to ultrasound in identifying canine biliary pathology. Thirty-five client-owned dogs presenting for acute abdomen signs received an abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced abdominal CT. Two authors reviewed the randomized, anonymized CT and ultrasound studies. Twenty-eight dogs had biliary pathology and seven dogs serving as controls had no evidence of biliary disease. The final diagnoses of patients with biliary pathology included cholelithiasis, gallbladder mucoceles, cholangiohepatitis/cholangitis, extrahepatic biliary obstruction, gallbladder wall edema, gallbladder wall mass, and cystic mucosal hyperplasia. Computed tomography was more accurate in identifying cholelithiasis than ultrasound. No statistical difference in the odds to identify other biliary pathology was identified between ultrasound and CT. Findings from this study suggest CT may be used in place of ultrasound in canine patients presenting for acute abdominal signs of biliary origin.
