SOC solutions of male survivors of childhood sexual abuse: an exploratory collective case study

Doctor of Philosophy / School of Family Studies and Human Services / Rick Scheidt / This exploratory collective case study utilized structured interviews to investigate retrospective reports of potential losses in resources resulting from childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and whether Selection, Optimization, and Compensation (SOC) “Solutions” were used by six adult male survivors to help offset these losses. Within- and between-case analyses of thematic reports are offered. Specifically, a description of each case is presented with an overview of the analysis of both unique and shared SOC Solution responses. SOC is presented in developmental research literature as a model of self-regulation across the life span. Retrospective reports of the participants suggest they did not engage in self-regulation in response to this childhood trauma. Rather, their reports evidenced the use of reactive “holding strategies” as opposed to deliberate use of selection strategies. This suggestive discovery supports previous research indicating that child survivors of trauma may have reduced self-regulation capacities. Childhood self-regulation may occur through the support of an adult (“dyadic regulation”). Findings further illustrate that the abuse may increase isolation in childhood. However, isolation, as an immediate childhood response to the abuse, may have reduced their potential for dyadic regulation as they dealt with the abuse on their own. Participants reports indicated the use” holding strategies” in childhood that were typically maladaptive. This may have led to the use of maladaptive optimization solutions in childhood that supported these holding strategies. Participants’ reports indicate that they were unable to deliberately access and implement adaptive compensation solutions until they reached adulthood, where these solutions seemed to contribute to more effective loss-directed responses. Baseline reserve capacity and developmental reserve capacity related to adaptive responding in the SOC model are discussed in the present context of trauma. The contributions of this case study to theory building in both the SOC developmental literature and clinical practice with male survivors of CSA are cautiously offered. Results may inform the theoretical reach of the SOC model, showing the limits of the self-regulation model when applied to childhood trauma. The study may inform clinical practice with this population by highlighting the importance of helping children self-regulate through dyadic regulation. Through this process, children may be guided by supportive adults to intentionally select adaptive goals to focus on following sexual abuse. Resources that male survivors may access and/or develop to adjust to the losses caused by childhood sexual abuse are offered.

'Of The People, By The People, For The People' Workers' Compensation in Queensland: The Rise and Fall of a Policy Community

The central question posed in this thesis is why has the Queensland model of workers' compensation been so enduring? The legislation remained largely intact from 1916 until 2001, with the exception of the years from 1996 to 1998. This was so despite the fact the central feature of a state-controlled monopoly that underpinned this model was always potentially divisive in line with the variances between liberal-conservative traditions and social-democratic ideals that subsisted in broader political culture. In addressing this question of longevity, this thesis explores the capacity of an initially contentious piece of legislation to draw strong support from former opponents, and the argument is put forward that it is best explained through the development and operation of a policy community that fostered a shared set of core values relative to broad workers' compensation policy preferences. These core values were compulsory state monopoly, no fault insurance and full access to common law. Thus, the longevity of the legislation is attributed to the continued support by key stakeholders of these core values. The thesis also demonstrates that policy community relations deteriorated during the 1990s as governments responded to broader political pressures precipitated by reform agendas. Inconsistencies in core values and policy outcomes for each stakeholder emerged as governments attempted to assert unprecedented control over the direction of workers' compensation in order to meet broader political goals. The legislation was threatened as relations within the policy community proved unsustainable when existing core values were contested.

Evaluation and optimization of PolyCor - a single-use Coriolis flowmeter / Evaluering och optimering av PolyCor- en Coriolisflödesmätare för engångsbruk

In the pharmaceutical industry it has become common to use single-use components in the production line to save time and money. Therefore, a team at General Electric started to develop a single-use Coriolis flowmeter, PolyCor M13, targeted at liquid chromatography systems. A Coriolis flowmeter in this embodiment is simply a tube put into vibration at its natural frequency. When there is a flow through the vibrating tube the Coriolis force arises, causing a phase shift of the pickup signals on each side of the actuator. This phase shift is linearly proportional to the mass flow through the tube.  The approach of PolyCor M13 is a separate oscillator and flow path. The oscillator is a metal skeleton holding the flow path, a silicone tube. The initial requirement flow range was 0.16-7.8 kg/min with an error less than 2%. Initial tests indicated that the prototype fulfilled these requirements at ambient temperature. This thesis is a further evaluation of the performance of M13. The main goal was to establish the pressure and temperature dependence and find an model to compensate for these. Investigation if M13 can manage flows up to 10 kg/min was also a part of this scope.  Control measurements showed that flows less than 2 kg/min could give large errors, over 5%. Flows higher than 2 kg/min up to 10 kg/min had errors less than 5%. The error was determined using a reference mass flow. By increasing the pressure in the system, from 0 to 4 bar, the error increased substantially. For the two lowest flows tested, 0.5 and 1 kg/min, the computed mass flows gave errors over 100%. The error for 2 kg/min was around 70% and the error successively decreased for higher flows and at 6-10 kg/min the error was around 20%. A compensation model was established by fitting a polynomial to the data. The best compensation model managed to reduce the error on new test data to 5-10% for flows between 2-10 kg/min. For smaller flows the error was still high but less than 100%.  Significant deviation from the temperature at which the proportionality was determined caused large errors. Errors for low flows, 0.5 and 1 kg/min, gave errors mainly up to around 50% but some errors were over 100%. For higher flows, 2-10 kg/min the error is up to 30% with some occasional errors up to 60%. The procedure to establish a compensation model for temperature was similar to that for the pressure compensation model. The best model for temperature compensation managed to reduce the error to 5-10% for flows between 2-10 kg/min. For lower flows the error was still high but slightly better, some error was still over 100%.  In conclusion, M13 is not as reliable as initial tests showed. The error limit is exceeded, especially for flows less than 2 kg/min. A more suitable range would be 2-10 kg/min. The pressure and temperature effects have an enormous impact but can be compensated to some extent. Since the accuracy of M13 is not perfect, errors less than 5% can be difficult to obtain in the current state of M13.
