Rubber-polymer blends: a thesis in polymer engineering

This study examines composite materials prepared from ground recycled tires (tire crumb) and post-consumer recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE). An initial set of composites was prepared from as-received tire crumb and HDPE recyclate containing 040% tire crumb in 10% increments, using injection moulding. The elastic modulus and tensile strength were found to decrease linearly with increasing tire crumb content. Addition of tire crumb to recycled HDPE caused produced an immediate reduction in the strain to failure with a progressively more modest decrease as the tire crumb content was increased. The impact toughness decreased more linearly with increasing tire crumb fraction. Cross sections of the composites showed that the tire crumb particles were in intimate contact with the matrix but post mortem examination of the fracture surface of the impact test specimens indicated that the level of bonding had been poor. A second set of composites was a prepared from 10% tire crumb. The tire crumb was first given an oxidative treatment in hot aqueous copper chloride at concentrations from 0-5 wt% Cu Ch at 50 or 100??C for 6 or 12 hours. The composites were injection moulded with an addition of 0.5 wt% dicumyl peroxide (DCP). These composites showed good bonding between the tire crumb and the recycled HDPE even at concentrations of 0% of the Cu 2+ oxidation catalyst. The addition of DCP was found to substantially reduce the modulus of neat HDPE and this reduction was reflected in the modulus of the composites. It was found that the DCP concentration could be reduced to 0.02% without adversely affecting the composites.

EVALUATING THE COMPOUNDING EFFECTS OF WEIGHT LOSS AND WEIGHT GAIN IN CHOOSING TO EXERCISE

The present study used healthy questionnaires to evaluate the compounding effects of weight loss and weight gain in choosing to exercise. The questionnaire was distributed to 31 participants via social media outlets. Demographic information was also recorded such as height, weight, ethnicity, and income. The height and weight recorded was used to correlate the BMI with the AUC values. This data did not show a strong correlation between body mass index with high or low AUC values, these values were evenly distributed between underweight, normal/average weight, and overweight participants. . The questionnaires designed to assess how people view exercise and to determine if there is a pattern with sequencing delays with the calculated switch point and AUC. Statistical and visual analyses were conducted at the group and participant level. The switch points, were documented from each delay and was calculated to determine the compounding sequence that was preferred from each participant. The results from the study indicated that participants chose to exercise immediately within the first day, when the consequence was to lose weight. The results for the gain condition indicated that participants would gain weight instead of exercise, to a certain limit (100 days), when they chose to then engage in exercise behavior regularly. The conclusion of this study shows that the longer the delay the less valued the outcome is. This is important when understanding the obesity epidemic within the United States.

Efficient sensor array subsampling for plane-wave ultrasound imaging

Ultrafast plane-wave ultrasound imaging offers very high frame rates (exceeding thousands of frames per second) but entails large volumes of backscattered data collected by a sensor array over multiple plane-wave emissions at different angles. We propose a simple method for reducing the total amount of sampled data. First, we acquire the zero-angle data in full, and then we perform deterministic subsampling of the remaining nonzero-angle data. Our subsampling patterns are angle-specific and derived based on the zero-angle data using a Fourier-domain migration technique. We use two experimental datasets to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of our proposed method in terms of spatial resolution and contrast-to-noise ratio, observed in the resulting B-mode images. / Graduate

Cellulose fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites: Processing and Product Charateristics

Steam exploded fibers from Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) wood were assessed in terms of (a) their impact on torque during melt processing of a thermoplastic cellulose ester (plasticized CAB); (b) their fiber incorporation and dispersion characteristics in a CAB-based composite by SEM and image analysis, respectively; and (c) their impact on the mechanical properties (under tension) of CAB-based composites having fiber contents of between 10 and 40% by weight. The fibers included water-washed steam exploded fibers (WEF), alkali-extracted fibers (AEF), acetylated fibers (AAEF), all from Yellow poplar (log Ro = 4.23), and oat fillers (COF) as control. The stepwise increase in cellulose content by extraction, and especially the (surface) modification by acetylation, contributed to increased torque during melt processing, and to improved interfacial adhesion as well as fiber dispersion. As compared to pure CAB, AAEF generated the highest increase in torque (+ 421%) followed by AEF (+ 260%) and WEF (+ 190%) at 40% fiber content by weight. AAEF was also found to enhance the tensile properties of the resulting composites. SEM studies of the tensile fracture surfaces indicated significant interfacial delamination and also pull - out of fibers when WEF, AEF, and COF were used to reinforce the CAB matrix. Composites with AAEF, by contrast, revealed fracture surfaces with reduced interfacial delamination and with significant fiber fracturing during failure. Image analysis was used to determine fiber dispersion within the resulting composites quantitatively. Significant improvement in fiber dispersion was achieved when the matrix was reinforced with acetylated fibers (AAEF). Fiber addition to the matrix resulted in loss of strain at break (- 80 to - 93%) and slight or significant increases in modulus (+ 47 to + 103%) depending on fiber type at 40% fiber content. Maximum stress declined for all fibers except AAEF at all fiber contents. AAEF-based composites revealed a decline in maximum stress when fiber content rose to 10%, and this reversed when fiber content increased beyond 10%. This increase in strength is consistent with the rule of mixtures that stipulates reinforcement of the matrix by fibers that are capable of transferring stresses across the fiber-matrix interface. Στόχος της παρούσας μεταπτυχιακής εργασίας είναι η περιγραφή και η σύγκριση της μορφολογικής διαδικασίας της σύνθεσης στις νεοελληνικές διαλέκτους όπως προκύπτει από την ανάλυση 2500 συνθέτων από τρεις διαφορετικές διαλέκτους, την Κρητική, την Ποντιακή και την Επτανησιακή. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο γίνεται μία σύντομη επισκόπηση των ορισμών που έχουν προταθεί για τη σύνθεση αναδεικνύοντας τους λόγους που καθιστούν δύσκολη τη διατύπωση ενός ορισμού που να ανταποκρίνεται διαγλωσσικά. Επίσης, παρουσιάζονται οι βασικές ιδιότητες που διέπουν τη σύνθεση της ελληνικής γλώσσας και τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά που διαχωρίζουν τη σύνθεση από τις υπόλοιπες μορφολογικές διαδικασίες (π.χ. παραγωγή) αλλά και από τη σύνταξη κυρίως με βάση τις μελέτες της Ράλλη (2007) και Ralli (2013). Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο εξετάζονται τα κατηγοριακά σχήματα πάνω στα οποία δομούνται τα σύνθετα στις τρεις υπό εξέταση διαλέκτους και στη συνέχεια συγκρίνεται η παραγωγικότητά τους. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο τα σύνθετα ταξινομούνται με βάση τις γραμματικές σχέσεις των συστατικών τους. Στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο μελετάται η σχέση μορφής και σημασίας και προτείνεται η διαίρεση των συνθέτων σε τρεις μεγάλες τάξεις: α) διαφανή, β) ημιδιαφανή και γ) αδιαφανή σύνθετα. Στο πέμπτο και έκτο κεφάλαιο εξετάζεται η σχέση της σύνθεσης με την παραγωγή και την κλίση αντίστοιχα μέσα από τα δεδομένα των τριών διαλέκτων. Τέλος, στο έβδομο κεφάλαιο μελετάται η συχνότητα εμφάνισης θεμάτων ξενικής προέλευσης ως συστατικά των συνθέτων στις τρεις αυτές διαλέκτους. / The aim of this master thesis is to describe and compare the morphological process of compounding in Modern Greek dialects based on the analysis of 2500 compounds. Data comes from three dialects, namely, Cretan, Pontic, and Heptanesian. The first chapter briefly presents some of the definitions which have been proposed for compounding highlighting the reasons that make the formulation of a definition that applies cross-linguistically a difficult task. It also presents the basic properties that govern the formation of Greek compounds and the main characteristics that distinguish compounding from the other morphological processes (e.g. derivation) and from syntactic operations based on the studies of Ralli (2007) and Ralli (2013). The second chapter presents the main patterns which are involved in the compounding process and compares their productivity cross-dialectally. In chapter three compounds are classified according to the grammatical relations between their components. The fourth chapter examines the relation between form and meaning and it suggests a division of compounds in three large classes: a) transparent, b) semi-transparent and c)opaque. The next two chapters examine the relation between compounding andderivation and inflection respectively. Finally, chapter seven examines whether stems of foreign origin appear frequently as components of compounds in these dialects.

The topic of this thesis covers the field of word-formation processes and describes the word-formation creativity of second revival generation authors, in particular compound adjectives. The poetry collections of selected second revival generation authors (F. L. Čelakovský, J. K. Chmelenský, J. V. Kamarýt and M. M. Z. Polák) are the source for compound adjectives research. The monograph of Dušan Šlosar Česká kompozita diachronně/Czech Compounds in Diachronic aspect (1999) is the source of methodology for this research. We have worked with terms: compound adjectives, compounding, derivative compounding, linking word, first and second part of a compound. The research target of this thesis is to classify the compound adjectives, to assess the meaning and use of compounds in text, to consider their communicative significance and to observe the frequency of compounds in the text of the authors.
