Questions related to the evolution of creative decision-making are discussed, in relation
to technology that is becoming more and more involved.
An overview of generative techniques, from its origins in music to contemporary
digital arts, is then presented.
Then, three works produced as part of this research-creation project are analyzed. The
different tools and techniques I used in making these works are explained and commented.
Verklärter Rohr is the subject of a more in-depth analysis. The comprovisational angle
of my work, as well as the development of my audiovisual language as it relates to the concept
of synchresis will be discussed.
An analysis of Machine In The Shell explain the strategies of spatialization and writing
techniques I used.
The analysis of Gu(I)t(A)rs expands on the use of various technologies including Leap
Motion, physical modeling synthesis and artificial intelligence.

Towards a comprovisation practice : a portfolio of compositions and notations for improvisationsPapageorgiou, Dimitris January 2017 (has links)
This thesis explores the interplay between repeatability and contingency in a series of instrumental and electro-instrumental compositions, through a practice that involves the devising and development of unique notational strategies and the use of bespoke real-time digital signal processing software. In particular, this study examines the praxis of comprovisation, i.e. practices situated between the poles of composition and improvisation, and it is framed by three main research topics: 1. An exploration of musical time and form as components of a dynamic system between events and musical gestures, involving structures of variable and/or indeterminate temporal durations. 2. An investigation of the ways in which the temporal organization and the in-time trópos (τρόπος - ”way, mode, modality, manner”) of an improvisational performance-practice for solo violin can be transduced into the symbolic level so as to be explored as compositional material. 3. An examination of the conditions in which Middle Eastern makam music composition and improvisation traditions can inform the development of contemporary notational devices for a comprovisation practice involving other performers. In addition to the scores, software, and recordings of the compositions, a relevant portfolio of recorded solo-violin improvisations and two published papers examining the above topics are included to further illustrate the discussion.

This thesis looks at improvised music and its relationship to the stage through my
experience and that of thirteen personalities from the arts world with whom I have had privileged
interviews. The essence of this approach is to observe how creators use improvisation in concert
situations or simply as a research method using digital or analog tools. This panorama allows me
to put my composition and research work in perspective at a time when, as a creator, I have turned
towards digital music after many years of writing and stage performance in the field of jazz and
improvisational music. In passing, the causality of the gesture during performance with digital
tools is problematic.
The thesis first retraces a brief journey through improvised music - more particularly what
is called musique actuelle or free improvisation. Through this overview, a few questions of
nomenclature and aesthetics will be raised in order to better understand the issues specific to this
music. The reflection continues with interviews through which I explore comprovisation, DJing,
digital musical instruments, dance and composition. The reflection culminates around five of my
works written in collaboration with the improvised music and dance communities.
