A qualitative investigation on the sexual practices of adolescents in relation to sexually transmitted diseases and acquired immuno- deficiency syndrome

Razak, Amana K January 2003 (has links)
Submitted in partial fullfillment of the requirements of a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology University of Zululand, 2003. / Research shows that prevention campaigns have been successful in raising awareness about AIDS and even in teaching people how to protect themselves, i.e. "Abstain, Be Faithful, Condomise" where they have failed dismally is in convincing people especially the youth of today as to how to apply it. The aim of the study was to investigate qualitatively the sexual practices of adolescents in relation to sexually transmitted diseases and acquired immuno-deficiency syndrome. The study investigated the determinants of condom using behaviour amongst school going adolescents, in the Durban and Verulam metropolitan region of Kwa-Zulu Natal. The motivation for the study was contexualised within the preventative health model which views the consistent and correct use of condoms as a primary strategy in preventing the spread of STD's and HIV/AIDS. In South Africa the health promotion campaigns focusing on safe sex practices and condom use have met with limited success as evidenced in this study. The sexual behaviour of adolescents is a key factor in influencing HIV transmission and sexually transmitted diseases. The reason for this behaviour is that most youths are inconsistent condom users and those who become sexually active at an early stage, run a greater risk to being exposed to HIV and STD's, both because of multiple partners and increased episodes of unprotected sex. The results indicate that on a very superficial level, South African adolescents possess good knowledge about transmission and prevention. The reason for this is that in order to produce behavioural changes, education programmes on sex and AIDS should include cognitive and behavioural skills training, addressing interpersonal problem solving, planning and assertive communication. Furthermore the under-resourced health sector, inaccessible health facilities, poor education and preventative measures do not empower the youth to make health choices responsibly It is envisaged that the recommendations from the research would ensure that existing health facilities are accessible to the youth today. Family planning clinics which are decentralised and offer a youth day programme in respect of sexuality education and proper use of contraceptives and condoms, ensuring full confidentiality. It is further hoped that this research would show that prevention and education messages are more effectively conveyed to the youth in South Africa, emphasising cognitive and behavioural skills training, with the co-operation and co-ordinated efforts of all departments and non governmental organisation, as well as by those infected themselves.

Using Population Survey Data to Model Determinants of HIV Status and Sexual Risk Behaviours

Patocs, Audrey E. 04 1900 (has links)

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continues to be disproportionately burdened by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In 2011, the region saw 1.8 million new infections, contributing to a prevalence of 4.9% among adults, or 23.5 million people living with HIV/AIDS. This thesis uses data collected by the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) to answer questions about risk factors and behaviours associated with HIV acquisition. I use logistic regression models to assess the impact of purported risk factors on sexual behaviours and HIV status. In Chapter One, I evaluate the association between respondents' condom use and their awareness of their own \local" epidemic. In Chapter Two, the association between hormonal contraceptives and risk of HIV infection is examined. The purpose of these analyses is to contribute to the body of literature that identifes factors that mitigate or contribute to risk for HIV infection, and help to inform public health policy.
/ Master of Science (MSc)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Joao_Carlos_Farber.pdf: 1293283 bytes, checksum: 52c6a4a68e497ea380669a62bd2588bc (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-08-15 / The discussions about the joint ownership are not recent, thus the conflicts concerning the ownership right have been well-known since the beginning of mankind. With the passing of time, an amazing growing in the construction of buildings has been noticed, and consequently it has required the proper legal and administrative treatment. The incredible growing of the organizations engaged in the construction of buildings has demanded some transformations which have gone beyond the necessity of creating legal systems, but they have also motivated the reformulation of the condominium association administrative models and what was considered an easy task for the condominium association management has become a planned and organized administrative process, requiring more and more highly qualified professional workers to manage those associations. As a result, the accounting system has become an important tool for managing the condominium associations and it was also noticed that it can surely contribute for the soundness of the financial controls, the reliability of the data presented and the patrimonial protection of the unit owners. The main objective of this work is to closely study the quality of the economic-financial data presented by the condominium associations, emphasizing one of the segments of the Accounting Sciences that needs to be better investigated and disclosed in Brazil, that is, the Accounting System for the Condominium Associations. For this reason. this work investigates the methods adopted by the residential condominium associations in order to disclose their economic-financial data, taking into account an empiric research which was aimed at the condominium associations managers and its objective was to appraise the quality and satisfaction level of those managers regarding the economic-financial data presented and disclosed to the condominium association community. The purpose is to demonstrate the main aspects connected with the disclosure of those data, emphasizing the importance of adopting the Accounting principles and patterns as a tool for improving the financial-administrative controls and the management of those associations. Another goal of this work is to demonstrate to the managers of the residential condominium associations, the importance of the Accounting Sciences as a tool for increasing the quality of the financial-administrative controls of those organizations.
