Effects of Dissolution-Precipitation Creep on the Crystallographic Preferred Orientation of Quartz Within the Purgatory Conglomerate, RI

McPherren, Eric January 2010 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Yvette D. Kuiper / Crystallographic Preferred Orientations (CPO) are common in deformed rocks, and usually result from crystal plastic deformation by dislocation creep. Whether deformation mechanisms that occur at lower differential stress and lower temperature than dislocation creep, such as Dissolution-Precipitation Creep (DPC), may result in the development of a CPO is less certain. DPC, a process also known as pressure-solution creep or dissolution creep, has caused substantial removal and reprecipitation of quartz within the Purgatory Conglomerate of Rhode Island. The conglomerate is exposed within the southeastern region of the Pennsylvanian Narragansett basin and experienced folding during the Alleghanian orogeny. Strain within the southeastern portion of the Narragansett basin increases from west to east and is associated with a metamorphic gradient from very low grade greenschist facies in the west to the lower biotite zone in the east. Within the Pugatory Conglomerate DPC has led to the dissolution of quartz along cobble surfaces perpendicular to the shortening direction, and to be precipitated as overgrowths at the ends of the cobbles (strain shadows), parallel to the maximum extension direction. This offers a unique opportunity to study the effects of dissolution and precipitation separately, because the quartz grains within the cobbles experienced dissolution only, while precipitation occurred in the strain shadows. Cathodoluminescence (CL) analysis was conducted on regions within the strain shadow in order to determine what amount of the quartz was formed authigenically. The results suggest that quartz-rich areas of the strain shadow were comprised primarily of authigenic quartz and formed channels or wedges. Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) analysis was used to test whether quartz dissolution processes within the cobbles and/or quartz precipitation within the strain shadows resulted in CPO development. Quartz grain c-axis orientations of various domains within the cobbles and strain shadows indicate that CPO patterns are absent in both domains of dissolution and of precipitation irrespective of the degree of strain or metamorphic grade. The existence of discrete mica selvages along the cobble margins suggests that quartz dissolution only occurred along the cobble surface and did not affect the grains, or result in a CPO, within the cobble's interior. Quartz precipitation within the strain shadows did not result in a CPO, probably because the strain shadows are truly localized regions of low strain with little to no differential stress, allowing quartz grain growth in random orientations. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College. The indrease in competitiveness makes companies seek ways to stay in the market. This goal is often achieved by forming industrial clusters that provide competitive advantages, improvements in the flow of information, cooperation, learning, and more. This work aims to create and validate a proposition for the development of Quality Control Circles in clusters for industrial processes to be improved. Thus, we carried out a literatura search to understand the concepts and formulate the proposition that is composed of two focuses, first, on the cluster and second, on companies. This research is composed of the following sections: introdution, theoretical framework, proposition before validation, validation of the proposition, the proposition for the development of quality control circles in industrial clusters, conclusion, references, and appendix. After completion of all stages of this research, is was noted that the proposition is applicable and with subsequence modifications based on the experience of respondents it became adequate to the reality of an indutrial cluster / Mestre

Petrology of the Late Proterozoic(?) - Early Cambrian Arumbera Sandstone and the Late Proterozoic Quandong Conglomerate, East-central Amadeus Basin, Central Australia

Phillips, Johnnie O. 01 May 1986 (has links)
Throughout the James Ranges and Gardiner Range the Arumbera Sandstone forms prominent strike ridges with distinctive dark reddish slopes and pale red to orange-white cliffs. Because of their lithologic and stratigraphic similarities, the names Eninta and ''Quandong" for these units should be suppressed in favor of the name of Arumbera Sandstone, which has precedence. The stratigraphic and lithologic differences observed between the Quandong Conglomerate in the type locality and the Arumbera Sandstone in the study area suggest that these units are not equivalent. Similarites with the Areyonga Formation suggest the Quandong Conglomerate could be part of the Areyonga Formation. Lithofacies la, ld, and 2b, and Unit 3 of the Arumbera and its equivalents are typically recessive arkoses, subarkose, and mudrocks. They are interpreted as nearshore-marine to coastal deltaic deposits which include intertonguing tidal-flat, tidal-channel, and beach sediments. Lithofacies 1b and 2a consist of cliff-forming arkoses, subarkoses, and lithic arkoses. Lithofacies 2c is also resistant, and consists of orthoconglomerates and conglomeratic sandstones. Lithofacies 1e is moderately resistant, and consists of paraconglomerates, conglomeratic sandstones, and mudrocks. It and lithofacies 2c contain pebbles and small cobbles of chert, quartzite, vein quartz, silicified ooids, and limestone, dolostone, shale, and sandstone. These four lithofacies are interpreted as braidplain and fluvial sheet sands. In the east-central part of the Amadeus Basin the Arumbera Sandstone probably was deposited in a coastal environment as a sequence of deltaic sediments that was dominated by fluvial processes. The Arumbera Sandstone appears to be the molasse derived from the Late Proterozoic and Early Cambrian Petermann Ranges orogeny. Source rocks include sedimentary, low- to middle-rank metamorphic, and plutonic granites. Grain mineralogy and weathering characteristics suggest a hot, semiarid climate during deposition of the Arumbera. The Arumbera Sandstone and Quandong Conglomerate contain fair to good porosity and permeability, and petrographic evidence shows mesogenetic generation of secondary porosity. Previous and present burial depths are adequate for the generation of petroleum. The presence of suitable underlying .source rocks, overlying salt of the Chandler for a seal, and stratigraphic and structural traps suggest a good potential for petroleum. Production of dry gas from the lower part of the Arumbera at Dingo field, north of Deep Well Homestead, confirms the petroleum potential of this formation.

Wang Chun Yuan Unknown Date (has links)

The new era of knowledge economic arrived. Knowledge has become the most important strategic asset of the firms. Utilize effective knowledge management to enhance the knowledge in the organization is a key issue for firms to compete in the 21st century. How to share the knowledge among the business units in conglomerate is also the main factor of enterprise¡¦s synergy. To establish a measuring tool for performance of knowledge transfer promotes the competence of the conglomerate richly. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between the conglomerate¡¦s diversification strategies , control management system and performance of knowledge transfer. The index of the measuring tool also be established for performance of knowledge transfer in this study. The empirical results are as follows : 1. There is obviously influence between knowledge transfer performance and types of diversification strategy. 2. There is not influence between control management system and types of diversification strategy.

Forging Citigroup: The Making of the Global Financial Services Supermarket and the Remaking of Postwar Capitalism

Schneider, Garrett Andrew January 2013 (has links)
This dissertation explores the transformation of American financial organization and governance over the postwar period. Through a case study of Citigroup, it seeks to explain how and why the global financial services supermarket became the dominant form of business organization in American finance and society. My core claim is that generational change in the late 1950s and 1960s swept into power a group of Interwar generation elites bearing with them a concept for the large financial firm and a vision of market order whose roots traced back to the Gilded Age. The timing and pattern of organizational and institutional change was, however, contingent on battles won and lost over particular features of their institutional environment.
