Journeys of Our Ancestors: Conservation Science Approaches to the Analysis of Cultural Material

O'Grady, Caitlin Rose January 2009 (has links)
The application and use of non-destructive portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis is a critical tool in the preservation and interpretation of cultural material. Portable XRF instrumentation produce elemental compositional data that is used to reconstruct current artifact composition, which can be related to materials and methods of manufacture, technological practice, as well as object condition and presence of corrosion surfaces. Portable XRF analysis is used to assess a variety of material classes utilized in artifact manufacture. The dissertation research is based on a series of three case studies that represent typical groups of material culture commonly encountered in conservation and conservation science research.Conservators and conservation scientists frequently undertake analysis and interpretation of disparate groups of materials. Often, these objects are tied together by research questions or themes directed by outside influences including preservation issues requiring action; curatorial research interests; museum exhibition programs; as well as many other cultural heritage stakeholders. To this end, both non-destructive and destructive tools that provide measurements of interest play critical roles in analysis. The case studies have been designed to answer common compositional questions relating to (a) bulk analysis of Chinese coins, (b) characterization of Southwestern ceramic colorants, and, (c) chemical examination of post-depositional manganese dioxide accretions occurring on archaeological ceramic materials. They evaluate the value of data produced using effectiveness of non-destructive portable XRF analysis for the interpretation of archaeological materials. The case studies provide a template for the development of conservation science research, predicated on object preservation, which produce meaningful data for the interpretation and conservation of the analyzed archaeological artifacts. Portable XRF provides useful data that is used to successfully interpret archaeological materials through (a) classification of metal alloys that can be related to published coin data, (b) identification of ceramic colorants and production technologies, and, (c) characterization of post-depositional product composition when used with established visual typologies.

Investigation and Optimization of Electrochemical Treatment for Daguerreotypes

Canosa, Elyse Mary, Canosa, Elyse Mary January 2016 (has links)
Daguerreotypes, nineteenth century photographs made entirely of metal, tarnish easily when exposed to atmosphere or other corrosive environments. The removal of such corrosion products has always been a controversial issue due to the irreversibility and potential damage inflicted by the treatment process. When performed using the proper technique and tools, electrochemical cleaning has been shown to remediate daguerreotype corrosion without causing damage to the object. This investigation explores in detail the effects of electrochemically treating daguerreotypes to better comprehend the physical, chemical, and aesthetic changes which occur during tarnish remediation. Such analysis includes understanding the extent to which tarnish is removed from the object, whether the microstructure and surface roughness are altered, and whether deposits are formed on the surface as the result of cleaning. Before characterizing the effects of treatment, a reliable and consistent electrochemical cleaning method was optimized on modern, custom-made daguerreotype coupons. These coupons were tarnished in controlled settings to create silver sulfide or silver oxide, two commonly found daguerreotype corrosion products. They were then treated by the optimized electrochemical cleaning process, which involved immersing the object in a 0.1 M NaNO3 electrolyte and connecting it to a platinum counter electrode, an Hg/Hg2SO4 reference electrode, and a potentiostat. Tests were executed to determine the most effective voltage for removing each corrosion product. Full characterization of the modern coupons was performed prior to corrosion, after corrosion, and after electrochemical remediation to provide full understanding of the treatment effects. Characterization techniques include scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The optimized process was also tested on three nineteenth century daguerreotypes, and the changes fully characterized and compared to those of modern samples. Both silver sulfide and silver oxide were noticeably reduced as the result of electrochemical cleaning, while the treatment process did not alter the physical and chemical features of the daguerreotype image particles or silver base layer. The results provide a much better understanding of the electrochemical cleaning process on a chemical and microscopic level, allowing conservators to make informed, scientifically-supported treatment decisions for their clients and institutions.

Case Studies in Conservation Science

Bisulca, Christina January 2014 (has links)
The research presented in this dissertation covers three separate topics of conservation as defined by the National Science Foundation: 1) Materials Stabilization, Strengthening, Monitoring, and Repair; 2. Understanding Material Degradation and Aging; and 3) Materials and Structural Characterization of Cultural Heritage Objects (the `technical study'). The first topic is addressed through a study to assess the consolidant tetraethoxysilane for the stabilization of alum treated wood. Falling under materials degradation studies is a study published in American Museum Novitates to understand how environmental conditions affect the aging of fossil resins from five different deposits. Two separate studies are included in technical study of cultural heritage objects which comprises the third research area of materials characterization. The first is a survey of red dyes used in Chinese paintings from the Ming Dynasty to the Early Republic (1364-1911). The second is a study of the pigments, dyes and binders used in Hawaiian barkcloth (kapa) from the 19th century.

A CHEMICAL COMPARISON OF TWO DIFFERENT OXIDIZING BLEACHES AND THE HISTORY OF EARLY EUROPEAN PAPER AND PAPERMAKING

DAVIES, MICHAEL CHRISTOPHER 02 February 2012 (has links)
Background: The bleaching of paper is an important and controversial treatment employed in the conservation of art. The use of a bleach may greatly enhance the quality of an image but at a cost of lost structural integrity. In order to fully consider the ramifications of bleaching a paper artifact, a historical study of early European paper and its manufacture was conducted. The structure of paper was also studied in order to understand the finer points of early European paper manufacture and to draw conclusions from the bleaching comparison. Results: A comparison of the commonly used ClO2 bleaching with a previously proposed chlorous acid treatment was conducted. The two different bleaching techniques were evaluated on their impact on the colour of artificially aged and unaged Whatman chromatography 1 paper. The results of the bleaching were analyzed with a colourimeter and it was determined that there was a significant change in colour as a result of the bleaching. The ClO2 and chlorous acid bleaching treatments did not produce results that were significantly different from one another, visually and statistically. The bleaching treatments were also tested with the viscometry of the paper in cadoxen and it was determined that ClO2 is a more degradative bleach than chlorous acid. The research also demonstrated that bleaching has a greater degradative impact on previously degraded samples. The quantitative results of the viscometry were accompanied by a qualitative look at the paper samples with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the SEM images there were slight visible differences in the samples that could correlate to aging. Conclusions: Chlorous acid is a gentle effective bleaching technique that was as effective as ClO2 and less degrading to the paper samples. Bleaching has an increased impact on previously degraded samples, and conservators should be wary of this. Further research involving this bleaching technique is suggested. The use of an SEM in imaging damage to paper is a viable option but more work is needed with this technique to ensure conclusive results. / Thesis (Master, Art History) -- Queen's University, 2012-01-31 22:51:58.027

The science-practice interface in Ecology and Conservation: a conceptual framework and shared ways of thinking among scientists and decision-makers / A interface ciência-prática em Ecologia e Conservação: um esquema conceitual e modos de pensar compartilhados entre cientistas e tomadores de decisão

Garcia, Diana Bertuol 04 August 2017 (has links)
Many current debates in Ecology and Conservation Science center on how to navigate the interface between science, policy and practice with the aim of using science to support viable, effective solutions to environmental problems. This dissertation has the general aim of contributing to devise ways to navigate the science-practice interface by taking an interdisciplinary approach to identify (1) how the academic debate on this subject has been framed, and (2) how scientists and decision-makers have been thinking about the relationship between science and practice. In chapter 1, I present a literature review, based on 1563 sentences describing causes of the science-practice gap extracted from 122 articles published in Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation journals. I use text analysis techniques to organize these causes into a process-based conceptual framework that describes three perspectives on the important processes, knowledges and actors in the science-practice interface. I then evaluate the predominance of these perspectives over time and across journals, and assess them in light of disciplines studying the role of science in decision-making, such as Political Science. The unchanged predominance over time of the perspective centered on a linear, unidirectional flow of scientific knowledge from science to practice suggests debates in Ecology and Conservation lag behind trends in other disciplines towards perspectives focusing on a bidirectional, integrative flow of knowledges between science and practice. In Ecology and Conservation, the integrative perspective seems primarily restricted to research traditions historically isolated from mainstream Conservation Biology, which in turn has been dominated by \"evidence-based conservation\" approaches. All identified perspectives represent superficial views of decision-making by not accounting for limits to human rationality, complexity of decision-making contexts, fuzzy science-practice boundaries, ambiguity brought about by science, and different types of knowledge use. Nonetheless, the integrative perspective emphasizing collaborative work between scientists and decision-makers may potentially allow for more democratic decision-making processes and explicit discussions of values. In chapter 2, I focus on scientists and decision-makers from Brazil, a tropical developing nation with a growing science and rich biodiversity, but currently facing several drawbacks in environmental policies. I used the three perspectives of the conceptual framework of chapter 1 to create a list of 48 statements describing how the science-practice interface should ideally be. Using Q-methodology from psychology, I asked 22 ecologists and environmental federal analysts to rank their agreement with these statements. Principal component analysis revealed three groups of participants with similar rankings of statements, thus holding shared ways of thinking about the science-practice interface. All ways of thinking assigned great importance to actors and knowledges from both science and practice, but differed on the roles assigned to science, scientists or decision-makers, indicating the need to openly debate expected roles for each actor in science-practice partnerships. Moreover, such partnerships seem to be hindered by a lack of organizational incentive rather than by cultural differences between scientists and decision-makers. In the final session of the dissertation, I integrate the conclusions from both chapters, highlighting the most important implications for a better understanding of the science-practice interface and for fostering productive science-practice linkages in Ecology and Conservation / A interface ciência-prática em Ecologia e Conservação: um esquema conceitual e modos de pensaDiversos debates atuais em Ecologia e Ciência da Conservação estão centrados em como navegar na interface entre ciência e prática com o objetivo de usar a ciência para apoiar soluções efetivas e viáveis para os problemas ambientais.

Rizzo, Marcia de Mathias 11 June 2015 (has links)
The acrylic varnish Paraloid B72TM is a thermoplastic, which acts as an adhesive forming clear films. By presenting Tg near 40°C, some substances can become adsorbed on the surface of varnished paintng layers, for example in Brazil. In this case, the traditional cleaning (stick with cotton and solvents) can cause damage (penetration of the solvent, abrasion,...) to the artwork. The cleaning of aqueous methods (gels and emulsions) can leave residues that interact with the original materials. Already, the use of magnetic nano-gels is restricted and difficult to access. This paper aims at developing cellulose/SBA-15 adsorbent films for withdrawal of Paraloid B72TM varnish, where it becomes necessary. These films were employed on mimetic (original paintings of different techniques and works made for study varnished with Paraloid B72TM) to verify its effectiveness. The raw materials, adsorbents and mimetic films before and after application were characterized by physico-chemical and analytical techniques [thermal analysis (TG/DTG and DTA); infrared spectroscopy (FTIR); scanning electron microscopy (SEM); transmited electron microscopy (TEM); fluorescent X-ray spectroscopy (XRF), digital microscopy and surface stereoscopic]. The digital microscopy and surface stereoscopy were used to inspect the surface micro morphology and it was possible to identify the presence of particles adsorbed on the surface of the artwork. The SEM, the TEM showed the micro morphology of the surfaces and FTIR characterized the raw materials and adsorbents films. The thermal behavior of materials and adsorbents films before and after application was evaluated by TG/DTG and DTA. Assessment of adsorption and mimetics films before and after application by XRF showed that there was no damage to the mimetic. The cellulose/SBA-15 film as adsorbent in the acrylic resin in polychrome surface cleaning artwork by means of a solvent, is effective. This method is alternative and not intended to replace any existing one. Since, in restoration of works of art each case is specific and nothing replaces the knowledge, insight and conservator dexterity.
