Difusão da construção em madeira no Brasil: agentes, ações e produtos / Diffusion of timber construction in Brazil: stakeholders, actions and products.

Na última década em diversos países do mundo vem crescendo o debate para o aumento do uso da madeira, em especial para o setor da construção civil, incentivado por dois motivos principais: pela capacidade de absorção de CO2 e consequente contribuição para a economia de baixo carbono e o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias industrializadas, predominantemente aquelas conhecidas como mass timber. Apesar de 60% do território brasileiro ser coberto por florestas e do potencial madeireiro do país, o uso da madeira como material construtivo é pouco expressivo. No entanto, em consonância com o debate mundial, o Brasil também dá indícios de desenvolvimento do setor da construção civil em madeira. Este trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar a tendência de aumento do uso da madeira através do levantamento dos agentes envolvidos nesse processo; das ações para a promoção do uso do material e dos produtos disponíveis no mercado. Também foram identificados os obstáculos enfrentados, as motivações e as perspectivas futuras. Cabe ressaltar que a pesquisa foi realizada com foco no setor privado e com o uso da madeira predominantemente em edificações na forma de estrutura e/ou vedação. Foram utilizadas duas abordagens metodológicas: mapeamento sistêmico e estudo de caso. O mapeamento sistêmico foi composto pelo levantamento bibliográfico e pesquisa documental, que num primeiro momento identificou quem são os principais agentes envolvidos e posteriormente, levantou dados sobre sua atuação e produção. Como resultado, foram identificadas 42 instituições e 66 empresas, além de 24 produtos entre sistemas, subsistemas e componentes construtivos e 20 ações de promoção da madeira, entre eventos, programas e mídia. Posteriormente foram selecionados 22 agentes, com base na expressividade em sua área de atuação, entre empresas e instituições, para a aplicação de entrevistas semi-estruturadas visando levantar as motivações e entraves do setor. Com isso foi possível verificar o aumento do número de empresas atuantes com tecnologias construtivas em madeira, e da variedade de produtos disponíveis no mercado, com destaque para as tecnologias industrializadas, assim como de ações para a promoção da madeira, particularmente no ano de 2017. Constatou-se ainda que o fenômeno trata-se não do aumento do uso da madeira em si, mas das tecnologias em produtos industrializados e que existe uma aproximação entre o setor florestal e da construção civil, o que é fundamental para o pleno desenvolvimento da cadeia produtiva. E por fim, apesar de haverem diversos entraves a serem sobrepostos, a expectativa é de que os produtos industrializados em madeira tenham uma participação cada vez maior na construção civil brasileira nos próximos anos. / Over the last decade the debate about the rise of use of wood, specially in the construction sector, is growing because of two main reasons: the potential to stock CO2 and consequently to contribute to a low carbon economy and the development of industrialized technologies, predominantly those known as mass timber. Even though roughly 60% of the Brazilian territory is covered by forests and the potential of the forestry sector the use of wood as a construction material is incipient. Nevertheless in consonance with a global trend, there are evidences indicating the development of the timber construction industry in Brazil. This research aimed to characterise this trend through the identification of the main stakeholders, the initiatives to promote wood and the available products on the market. Also, matters related to obstacles, motivations and future perspectives were also analysed. It is important to highlight that the research focused on the private sector with the use of wood predominantly on buildings as structure and/or sealing. To accomplish it two methods were used: systemic mapping and study case. The systemic mapping consisted on both the research through the scientific literature and documents (i. e. catalogs, data available on websites) which identified 42 institutions, 66 companies, 24 different products among construction systems and components, and also 20 wood promotion actions (i. e. conferences, programs, media). Afterwards 22 stakeholders among companies and institutions were selected based on the relevance of their activities. Then semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data about the difficulties, motivations and perspectives of the timber construction sector. As a result it was identified a rise on the quantity of companies, variety of products available on the market (specially engineered wood products) and wood promotions initiatives, particularly on the year of 2017. The study revealed that the development is not about the use of wood itself, but instead highly industrialized products. There is also the approximation between the forest and civil construction sector, which is essential for the full development of the production chain. Besides, despite the many obstacles found, it is expected for the next years a consistent growth of engineered wood products in Brazilian civil construction sector.

Usando fontes históricas primárias e secundárias, materiais e dados de arquitetura, este estudo procura interpretar e definir as relações entre estruturas arqueológicas existentes a partir de uma perspectiva de espaços remodelados dentro de contextos históricos mutáveis. / The present study analyzes architectural structures uncovered during archaeological excavations in the vicinity of the slave quarters at the Monjope Sugar Mill. Considering that the current spatial disposition of the mill does not necessarily reflect the diverse historical contexts of use, it is of interest here to analyze the remains and determine to which period they belong, individually or collectively, and what function or functions they might have served. Using primary and secondary historical sources, material and architectural data, this study seeks to interpret and define the relations between archaeological and existing structures from a perspective of remodeled spaces within changing historical contexts.

Construire et habiter à Lugdunum : Organisation, formes et évolution de l’architecture domestique (IIe av. – IIIe siècle apr. J.-C.) / .

Traiter de la construction dans le monde romain, et plus particulièrement dans le cas d’une cité ou d’une colonie, constitue un exercice souvent ardu tant les angles d’approches sont nombreux. Pourtant, Lugdunum constitue une exception dans ce domaine, tant par la richesse de sa documentation archéologique et épigraphique, que par son statut de colonie romaine précocement dévolue en Gaule. Ce travail doctoral s’est donné pour objectif de traiter de l’architecture domestique à Lugdunum, à travers le prisme de la construction, en s’appuyant sur une approche globale, tant par les matériaux étudiés que par les méthodologies mises en place. En suivant les différentes étapes de la construction, l’objectif est de définir les différents approvisionnements des chantiers, l’évolution typologique et chronologique des matériaux et des techniques mises en œuvre, ou encore la diversité des formes de l’habitat, afin de dresser une image la plus précise possible de « l’art de bâtir » à Lyon, et des artisans qui y participent. À ces différentes questions, l’analyse des matériaux, des techniques de construction et des plans, ainsi que d’un corpus d’inscription, apporte des réponses très concrètes et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives de recherche.Dans le cadre d’un Master mené entre 2007 et 2009, l’étude des toitures en tuiles de terre cuite, en Gaule du Centre-est, et plus particulièrement à Lyon, a révélé une évolution typologique des tegulae et imbrices qui se prête à l’établissement d’une typo-chronologie détaillée, permettant de les dater au demi-siècle prés. En m’appuyant sur la méthodologie mise en place au cours de ce master, une analyse exhaustive des fragments de brique, de quart de colonne, de tomette d’opus spicatum ou encore de tubuli a été menée afin, de caractériser une éventuelle évolution de leur morphologie, ou de leur utilisation dans la mise en œuvre des bâtiments. Une attention particulière a également été portée à la nature des moellons (granite, gneiss, calcaire...), aux pierres d’importation (marbres et calcaire), ainsi qu’aux mortiers mis en œuvre dans l’architecture des maisons lyonnaises. Ces études, couplées à une analyse géomorphologique du territoire colonial, permettent de livrer une image complète de l’approvisionnement en matériaux de construction de Lugdunum. Le second axe de recherche concerne les techniques de construction employées pour édifier les domus de la colonie de Lyon. Les maçonneries (fondation et élévation) ont donc été analysées selon des critères techniques et typologiques, en parallèle de l’étude des matériaux (moellons, mortier, TCA). L’architecture en terre crue nous offre un autre angle d’approche. Cette technique de construction est omniprésente à Lyon pour l’architecture domestique et reste cependant peu étudiée. Nous aborderons donc les modalités de sa mise en œuvre, ainsi que sur les différentes formes d’architecture dans laquelle elle intervient (adobe, pans de bois, torchis…), au travers des vestiges découverts en place, ou des restes carbonisés qui nous sont parvenus. Enfin, nous aborderons la question du plan des maisons lyonnaises en reprenant la classification proposée par E. Delaval en 1995. L’apport de l’archéologie préventive et programmée à Lyon a en effet permis de renouveler le corpus des bâtiments à vocation domestique et/ou artisanale, mettant en lumière de nouveaux types d’édifice. Nous élargirons cette réflexion grâce aux comparaisons possibles avec les autres cités et colonies de Gaule et du monde romain. Pour conclure, ce travail doctoral focalisé sur l’évolution des techniques et des matériaux de construction, mais également des plans des édifices domestiques de Lyon, révèle la richesse d’une analyse menée à partir d’une grande variété de matériaux, souvent peu considérés par une partie de la communauté scientifique – à savoir les briques, les tuiles, les moellons, le mortier.... / Deal with the topic of construction in the Roman world, mostly for a civitates or a colonia, become a difficult exercise because of the many perspectives for this subject. However, Lugdunum is an exception in this field, both its rich archeological or epigraphic documentations and its status of early roman colony in Gaul. This doctoral research has set itself the objective of dealing of domestic architecture in Lugdunum. This work is built on a global approach, based on the studies of construction techniques and building materials as well as new methodology. Following the step of a construction site, the purpose of this work is to characterize the different chains of supply, the typological and chronological evolution of building materials or the diversity of the domestic architecture. The analysis of building materials, construction techniques, typology of the domus, as well as group of funeral inscriptions bring very concrete answers and opens new research opportunities.As part of a Master conducted between 2007 and 2009, studying the terracotta tiled roofs in Gaul, particularly in Lyon, allowed the establishment of a typology of tegulae and imbrices, permitting to date this type of artifact to nearly half a century. Based on the methodology developed in this master, a comprehensive analysis of fragments of brick, column quarter, bricks of opus spicatum or tubuli was conducted in order to characterize any changes in their morphology, or for use in the construction of buildings. Particular attention was also paid to the nature of rubble stone (granite, gneiss, limestone…), as well as the mortar used in the roman houses of Lyon. These studies, coupled with geomorphologic analysis of the colonial territory, allow delivering a complete picture of the supply of Lugdunum in building materials.The second research axis concerns the construction techniques used to build the domus of the colony. Masonry (foundation and elevation) were therefore analyzed using technical and typological criteria, in parallel to the study of materials (rubble stone, mortar, terracotta materials). The mud brick architecture and earth structures offering another angle of approach. This construction technique is ubiquitous in Lyon for domestic architecture and remains poorly studied. We will discuss the modalities of its implementation, as well as the various forms of architecture in which it operates (adobe, wood-framed, mud ...), through the remains found in place, or the carbonized artifacts discovered in the colony.Finally, we will discuss the issue of Roman houses plan in Lyon, incorporating the classification proposed by E. Delaval in 1995. The contribution of preventive archeology these past years in Lyon has allowed to renew the corpus of domestic buildings, highlighting new types of building. We will extend this thinking through the possible comparisons with other cities and colonies of Gaul and in the Roman world.In conclusion, this doctoral work focused on the evolution of techniques and building materials, but also plans of domestic buildings in Lyon, reveals the richness of an analysis from a variety of materials, often not considered by a part of the scientific community. At the scale of a colony, these various lines of research provide a better understanding for the concepts of manufacturing and material supply, but also to improve our knowledge of construction techniques. These different aspects, treated in a comprehensive manner and diachronic way, open to historical and sociological reflection concerning the organization of workshops (role of corporations, degree of independence) or evolving status of craftsmen of the Lugdunum colony working in construction site. These conclusions are based on an original corpus of funerary inscriptions of Lyon craftsmen.

Terra e trabalho: o lugar do trabalhador nos canteiros de produção da Arquitetura e construção com terra / Earth and labor: the position of workers in the earthen Architetcture construction sites

No meio da Arquitetura e Construção com Terra, aspectos positivos relacionados à diminuição da degradação ao meio ambiente e à promoção de resultados benéficos ao desempenho das edificações são bastante difundidos entre seus simpatizantes e especialistas. No entanto, um tema que parece ser pouco explorado é o canteiro de produção desta arquitetura e as condições de atuação dos trabalhadores. O trabalho frequentemente é pesado, a quantidade de esforço físico necessária para a execução das diversas tarefas é alta, podendo ser excessiva e até degradante se as condições de operação no canteiro não estiverem devidamente equacionadas. Dada a altíssima frequência das situações de intensa exploração no setor da construção civil no Brasil e considerando o caráter fortemente artesanal da construção com terra, faz-se necessário conhecer como ocorre a produção desta arquitetura e se a mecanização parcial destes canteiros repercute em melhores condições de trabalho aos operários envolvidos. A partir de informações coletadas em entrevistas com trabalhadores, engenheiros e arquitetos envolvidos nos canteiros de produção da arquitetura e construção com terra, visitas a canteiros de produção desta arquitetura, além de informação complementar apresentada sobre estes canteiros na bibliografia especializada, é construída uma avaliação estruturada por uma análise qualitativa e crítica fundamentada na teoria crítica da arquitetura. A evolução do canteiro de obras passa pelo remanejamento e pela eliminação de algumas tarefas. A mecanização parcial permite que operários possam se deslocar, ou ser deslocados, a ocupações menos degradantes. No entanto, a inclusão de máquinas não ocorre primordialmente por este motivo, ela passa a ser considerada pois, ao confrontar o custo da mão de obra com o investimento em maquinário, este último começa a se revelar como financeiramente viável no Brasil. Portanto, a mecanização parcial que ocorre até agora não pretende ir além de um aumento na produtividade. Mesmo com a incorporação de algumas máquinas, parte dos trabalhadores seguem realizando outras tarefas bastante pesadas, muitas delas exaustivamente repetitivas. / Among Earthen Architectures supporters and experts, positive aspects related to low environmental degradation and to the promotion of better results to the building performance are well known. However, a subject that seems to be little explored is the construction site of this architecture and the conditions of operation of workers. The labor is often heavy and a high amount of physical exertion is required. If operating conditions at the construction site are not adequately addressed, the demands may be excessive and even degrading. Given the high frequency of intense exploration in the construction sector in Brazil, also considering the strong artisanal character of earthen construction, it is necessary to know how production takes place in this architecture and if the partial mechanization of these sites improves working conditions. Based on information collected in interviews with workers, engineers and architects involved in earth construction production sites, visits to these architecture building sites, in addition to supplementary information provided by the relevant literature, this paper will present an evaluation structured by a critical and qualitative analysis. This review will be based on the Critical Theory of Architecture. The evolution of the construction site occurs by the relocation and the elimination of some tasks. The partial mechanization allows workers to move, or to be moved, to less degrading jobs. However, in Brazil this is not the reason of the inclusion of machines in the processes, the major purpose is to increase productivity. Even with the incorporation of some machinery, the workers continue performing degrading jobs caused by high physical exertion required or exhaustively repetitive tasks.

<p>Under åren 1977–89 bedrev arkeologiska institutionen vid Umeå universitet en forskningsundersökning av en boplats från äldre järnålder på Genesmon i Själevad socken, norra Ångermanland. Under åren 1991–99 rekonstruerades delar av gården i Gene fornby, ett hundratal meter därifrån. Denna avhandling behandlar uppbyggnad och inredning av ett av gårdens långhus, hus II, samt den treskeppiga byggnadstypens konstruktion och funktion i en större kontext. Syftet med avhandlingen är att beskriva växelverkan mellan teori och praktik i rekonstruktion, att beskriva rekonstruktionsarbete som en föränderlig förklarings- och förståelseprocess samt att undersöka om rekonstruktion kan bidra till ökad förståelse av arkeologiska huslämningar. Efter nära 5000 års dominans i södra och mellersta Skandinavien upphör långhusen att vara det allmänna byggnadsskicket i slutet av yngre järnålder. Varför detta sker blev en viktig fråga för förståelsen av byggnadstypen.</p><p>En hermeneutisk modell används för att beskriva hur tolkningarna under rekonstruktionsarbetet kom att inverka på varandra i en serie av samverkande eller motverkande förklaringar till den arkeologiska lämningen. Utifrån arkeologiska och skriftliga källor beskrivs därefter indelning och inredning av långhuset i sju rumsfunktioner som kan benämnas bur, önd, skåle, fjös, stall, lada och eldhus. Subsequently, during the years 1991-99 parts of the farm were reconstructed at Gene Fornby, a couple of hundred meters away from the site. This thesis deals with the construction and furnishing of one of the farm’s longhouses (House II), and the wider context of the construction and function of the “three-aisled” building type. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the interaction between theory and practice in reconstruction, to describe the reconstruction process as a constantly changing process of explanation and understanding, and to investigate as to whether reconstructions can contribute to an increased understanding of archaeological house remains. At the end of the Late Iron Age, after nearly 5000 years of dominance in Southern and Central Scandinavia, the longhouse ceases to be the dominant form of construction. Understanding why this happened became an important problem in this work. </p><p>During the reconstruction work, different interpretations influenced one another in a series of positive and negative feedbacks into the explanations of the archaeological remains. A hermeneutic model is used to describe this phenomenon. From archaeological and written sources, division and furnishing of the long-houses can be described in terms of seven room functions. These can be classified as storage bur, porch önd, living room skåle, byre fjös, stable stall, barn lada and rough kitchen eldhus. In order to understand the ideological meaning of the buildings the role of the fire, the placement of the seat of honour and the change in the type of building in Iceland became important parts of this study. Numerous heating experiments have been undertaken in order to try to solve the problem of excessive smoke within the building. The experiments finally led to a possible solution that also serves to illustrate just how the model itself came to influence the process of interpretation.</p><p>The reconstruction work led to results of different character: partly data on construction, function and materials – and the time frame for the construction of House II from its archaeological remains; and partly knowledge and new theories which increase our understanding of the three-aisled building form. The elongated form, roof supporting poles, central hearth and a close association with ritual and ideology are suggested as characteristic elements for this type of construction, throughout its chronological and spatial extent. The relationship between the building and Norse ideologies is suggested as one of the explanations for the longhouse’s dissappearance with the introduction of Christianity. At the end of the Viking Age, there is a transition into a new framework based method of construction, and the political and ecclesiastical authorities are discussed as having governed these widespread changes.</p>

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the interaction between theory and practice in reconstruction, to describe the reconstruction process as a constantly changing process of explanation and understanding, and to investigate as to whether reconstructions can contribute to an increased understanding of archaeological house remains. At the end of the Late Iron Age, after nearly 5000 years of dominance in Southern and Central Scandinavia, the longhouse ceases to be the dominant form of construction. Understanding why this happened became an important problem in this work. During the reconstruction work, different interpretations influenced one another in a series of positive and negative feedbacks into the explanations of the archaeological remains. A hermeneutic model is used to describe this phenomenon. From archaeological and written sources, division and furnishing of the long-houses can be described in terms of seven room functions. These can be classified as storage bur, porch önd, living room skåle, byre fjös, stable stall, barn lada and rough kitchen eldhus. In order to understand the ideological meaning of the buildings the role of the fire, the placement of the seat of honour and the change in the type of building in Iceland became important parts of this study. Numerous heating experiments have been undertaken in order to try to solve the problem of excessive smoke within the building. The experiments finally led to a possible solution that also serves to illustrate just how the model itself came to influence the process of interpretation. The reconstruction work led to results of different character: partly data on construction, function and materials – and the time frame for the construction of House II from its archaeological remains; and partly knowledge and new theories which increase our understanding of the three-aisled building form. The elongated form, roof supporting poles, central hearth and a close association with ritual and ideology are suggested as characteristic elements for this type of construction, throughout its chronological and spatial extent. The relationship between the building and Norse ideologies is suggested as one of the explanations for the longhouse’s dissappearance with the introduction of Christianity. At the end of the Viking Age, there is a transition into a new framework based method of construction, and the political and ecclesiastical authorities are discussed as having governed these widespread changes.

Historic towns and historic buildings are important witnesses of the past cultures and civilizations. Their sustainability and transfer to the next generations require continuous maintenance and repair interventions which should be compatible with their original construction techniques, details and materials. In order to define proper interventions to a historic building, it is necessary to understand how and from what it is built. Therefore, traditional construction materials, detailings and techniques should be well understood prior to any kind of intervention to a historic building. The objective of this study is, first of all, to provide a body of knowledge on traditional construction process and techniques / then, to store, structure, process, represent and share this knowledge in a systematic and controlled way by means of a web based GIS portal. In this respect, traditional timber framed houses of Tarakli in Sakarya has been chosen as the case study, on account of being one of the significant historical towns in our country where the tissue together with historical building is still conserved. For this study, among the applications of GIS technology, Web-based GIS has been determined as the most effective and functional tool in order to develop an online information portal for storing, displaying the collected raw data and sharing with other users as utilizable information.

Terra e trabalho: o lugar do trabalhador nos canteiros de produção da Arquitetura e construção com terra / Earth and labor: the position of workers in the earthen Architetcture construction sites

No meio da Arquitetura e Construção com Terra, aspectos positivos relacionados à diminuição da degradação ao meio ambiente e à promoção de resultados benéficos ao desempenho das edificações são bastante difundidos entre seus simpatizantes e especialistas. No entanto, um tema que parece ser pouco explorado é o canteiro de produção desta arquitetura e as condições de atuação dos trabalhadores. O trabalho frequentemente é pesado, a quantidade de esforço físico necessária para a execução das diversas tarefas é alta, podendo ser excessiva e até degradante se as condições de operação no canteiro não estiverem devidamente equacionadas. Dada a altíssima frequência das situações de intensa exploração no setor da construção civil no Brasil e considerando o caráter fortemente artesanal da construção com terra, faz-se necessário conhecer como ocorre a produção desta arquitetura e se a mecanização parcial destes canteiros repercute em melhores condições de trabalho aos operários envolvidos. A partir de informações coletadas em entrevistas com trabalhadores, engenheiros e arquitetos envolvidos nos canteiros de produção da arquitetura e construção com terra, visitas a canteiros de produção desta arquitetura, além de informação complementar apresentada sobre estes canteiros na bibliografia especializada, é construída uma avaliação estruturada por uma análise qualitativa e crítica fundamentada na teoria crítica da arquitetura. A evolução do canteiro de obras passa pelo remanejamento e pela eliminação de algumas tarefas. A mecanização parcial permite que operários possam se deslocar, ou ser deslocados, a ocupações menos degradantes. No entanto, a inclusão de máquinas não ocorre primordialmente por este motivo, ela passa a ser considerada pois, ao confrontar o custo da mão de obra com o investimento em maquinário, este último começa a se revelar como financeiramente viável no Brasil. Portanto, a mecanização parcial que ocorre até agora não pretende ir além de um aumento na produtividade. Mesmo com a incorporação de algumas máquinas, parte dos trabalhadores seguem realizando outras tarefas bastante pesadas, muitas delas exaustivamente repetitivas. / Among Earthen Architectures supporters and experts, positive aspects related to low environmental degradation and to the promotion of better results to the building performance are well known. However, a subject that seems to be little explored is the construction site of this architecture and the conditions of operation of workers. The labor is often heavy and a high amount of physical exertion is required. If operating conditions at the construction site are not adequately addressed, the demands may be excessive and even degrading. Given the high frequency of intense exploration in the construction sector in Brazil, also considering the strong artisanal character of earthen construction, it is necessary to know how production takes place in this architecture and if the partial mechanization of these sites improves working conditions. Based on information collected in interviews with workers, engineers and architects involved in earth construction production sites, visits to these architecture building sites, in addition to supplementary information provided by the relevant literature, this paper will present an evaluation structured by a critical and qualitative analysis. This review will be based on the Critical Theory of Architecture. The evolution of the construction site occurs by the relocation and the elimination of some tasks. The partial mechanization allows workers to move, or to be moved, to less degrading jobs. However, in Brazil this is not the reason of the inclusion of machines in the processes, the major purpose is to increase productivity. Even with the incorporation of some machinery, the workers continue performing degrading jobs caused by high physical exertion required or exhaustively repetitive tasks.

Urban agriculture - a community development project

NDLTD Innovative Learning through ETDs Award 2010. This dissertation attempts to provide a platform where the local residents can be educated, empowered and given the oppertunity to earn an income. This platform develops the community from the bottom up and could be implemented in townships across the country. The program takes form as an urban agricultural centre. The centre is located near Eerste Fabrieke Station in Mamelodi and is used as generator for other business, commercial and recreational activities.
